Our mission and vision is to promote the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults through a network of community connections and services. Our aim is to help create a just society where aging adults and those who care about them can live their best lives. Activities include exercise programs, computer classes, guitar lessons, card clubs, dance classes, recreational trips, food, fun, laughter and much more. CASC also serves as a neighborhood gathering place for non-profit, civic and PanHellenic organizations. You can find a rich diversity of neighborhood groups and participants who access the center on a daily basis. They participate in community meetings, attend wedding receptions, birthday parties, Green Dolphin Lounge, special events and to hear from the Mayor or a City Council member at a Central District Council, Leschi, Madrona, Junkins Park, Mt. Baker, Links or Tabor 100 gathering. On any given day at the center there is rich diversity of age, race, class, culture, gender and diversity of thought. As a community gathering place, CASC is positioned to engage, serve and bridge the gaps of the historical founders of the center and that of new and emerging communities, while celebrating what each one brings to a changing community landscape. Central Cafe , CASC’s in house-kitchen, serves hot meals, cooked from scratch five days per week except when the center is closed. On Soul Food Tuesdays members and guest delight in an assortment of traditional Soul Food Cuisine. At monthly Birthday Lunches, those celebrating birthdays eat free, select a gift of choice, and can dance to 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s R & B, Jazz and Party Blues by Mr. Cliff Productions. Membership Annual Membership dues are $60.00. Dues include subscription to The Connector and discounts on programs and special events. Lifetime Memberships are available for $500.00. Payments can be made weekly ($10), monthly ($42), quarterly ($125.00) and/or in one payment of $500.00. Cash, Credit/Debit or Checks are welcomed. Hours & Contact Information 2 HOURS OF OPERATION Monday: 8:30AM-5:00PM Tuesday: 8:30AM-5:00PM Wednesday: 8:30AM-9:00PM Thursday: 8:30AM-9:00PM Friday: 8:30AM-5:00PM CONTACT INFORMATION Address: 500 30th Avenue South Seattle, WA 98144 Phone: 206.726.4926 Fax: 206.323.9928 Website: centralareasrcenter.org STAFF A note from the Director… It is common knowledge that Seattle housing is “EXPENSIVE”. If you are buying a home in 2015, the average cost lingers around $538,000. If you have been in your home for many years, you can easily find that your property taxes have escalated to an amount larger than you can afford to pay on your retirement income, pension or the money you have saved. If you are working but earning less than the average annual Seattle income of over $60,000, it is difficult to live, work and play in Seattle. HOUSING AFFORDABILITY IS A BIG ISSUE FOR MANY OF OUR MEMBERS. It is on a daily basis that members come into my office to share their housing concerns with me. As I listen to their stories, I am pained by the stresses that housing affordability, home maintenance of property and renting dis-location brings to the lives of members and its impact on their overall health and well-being. To address housing issues several solutions are being recommended and implemented at the center. 1. Referrals are being made for Legal Consultations to clinics and providers who offer low-cost and free services. For those needing more than this; 2. CASC is establishing a scholarship program for seniors in need of paid professional assistance to help defray some of their legal cost associated with getting retro property tax-exemptions, rental dis-location, estate planning, wills, medical directives and other elder law issues. 3. Our aim will be to raise money to support scholarships through contributions and special targeted events. 4. The first of two special fundraising events will be held in support of the scholarship program on Sunday, May 3rd and on Saturday, May 23rd. On Sunday, May 3rd, A Pampering Day from 3 pm – 6 pm will be offered to members and non-members, $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Hearts for Humanity, a mobile outreach organization that provides therapeutic salon and self-esteem services will partner with CASC to provide….haircuts, manicures, pedicures, beard and moustache grooming, facials, lashes and eyebrow arch, flat iron and curls and some limited braiding. An all-day interactive workshop on Elder Law issues will be provided by attorneys and legal interns on Saturday, May 23rd, 9 am – 3 pm at CASC. Workshops will cover medical directives, estate planning and open forum discussions on items of collective interest. Cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members and includes handouts, refreshments and lunch. Proceeds from both of these two events will support the scholarship program. Feel free to contribute to CASC’s scholarship program by designating a contribution by cash, credit card or check to “Scholarships.” All donations are tax-deductible. Collectively we can help one another to enjoy the aging process by relieving some of the pressures brought on by the high cost of housing affordability in homes that are paid for and/or through dislocation of rental housing owing to Seattle’s rapid development and increased density. Memory Lane: A Seniors Digital Story 1920 – WWII Oral History and Film Project Recruiting Participants, and Steering Committee Members CASC hosted an introductory meeting to acquaint participants and potential Steering Committee Members to Memory Lane: A Seniors Digital Story 1920 – WWII Oral History and Film Project on Monday, March 23rd. Fifteen individuals attended each with a special interest in the project that ranged from being a videographer, researcher or writer to representing a family member and wanting to share the story of his/her parents and their migration or birth in the Central District. Twenty-four individuals are being recruited to tell and share their stories which will be documented in print and film over an eight month period to culminate in a book release, film debut and DVD release party in the fall. Memory Lane will tell the story of arrival, what brought you here, where you worked, and your remembrances of the era. It will share the opportunities you pursued, your fondest memories, joys and disappointments. It will answer what community meant to you, and how it was defined? This will all be juxtaposed to a back drop of the historical changes taking place at the time, music, jazz, roaring twenties, Jim Crow, prohibition, The Great Depression, New Deal and World War II. If you are interested in participating in this project awarded by the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund feel free to join us on Monday, April 20th at 5:30 pm to learn more about the project, and to help define the criteria to be used in the selection of the twenty-four to be showcased and to have their stories told. The first goal is to identify the individuals to be showcased by June 1st. General Membership Meetings Membership meetings are held every 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1pm-2:30pm in the Dining Hall. Volunteer drivers are needed for Senior Services' Volunteer Transportation program. Using their own vehicles, volunteer drivers help older adults maintain their independence by taking them to necessary medical appointments. Clients appreciate their improved access to medical care, meaningful interactions with caring volunteers, and increased peace of mind. Unfortunately, the program does not have enough drivers to meet the demand for transportation from vulnerable King County residents. If you have the “drive” to help others, a clean driving record, and some daytime availability, call (206) 748-7588, email Hilary at [email protected], or visit http:// www.seniorservices.org/transportation to find out more. You can also read stories about the program on its blog: www.volunteertransportation.blogspot.com. Help seniors get “on the road” to fuller, healthier lives! Yes!
