Block 4 “Whig Rose”, commemorates Julia Ward Howe. Howe not only is remembered as a women’s activist, she fought for the causes of peace and abolition as well. [What perfect timing—treat yourself for Mother’s Day and sign up for this block of the month!!] Born in New York City on May 27, 1819, Julia’s mother died when she was 5 years old, leaving her to be raised by a strict father. Despite his reservations, Julia was allowed an extensive education. Later, at age 20 she became an accomplished writer. Julia’s father died in 1839 leaving her a wealthy heiress. She married Samuel Howe, an abolitionist, in 1843. Howe was 20 years older than Julia and had strong views about the role of women in a marriage. After a rocky start to their marriage Julia began publishing articles and poems despite her controlling husband’s protests. When Samuel began publishing an anti-slavery newspaper, The Commonwealth, he came to appreciate Julia’s literary skills and she assisted him with writing articles and producing the paper. By 1868, Howe had begun attending and speaking at meetings of local suffrage associations. Then in 1869 she and Lucy Stone organized the American Woman Suffrage Association. This organization welcomed men as members and focused solely on suffrage. She also co-founded the Woman’s Journal and wrote articles on gender, racial and legal equality for all for more than 20 years. Howe died in October, 1910 before seeing the right to vote for women enacted. Martingale Book Program Quilters—Do not discard your Martingale Super Stitcher book program cards.
