The following notes hold some interest (and some may still stand as records: 105 points was most scored in a 1A playoff game, 193 points between Wlash and Arriba is the highest combined score for two teams in the state tournament and the 101 points were the most scored in a state championship game. The Walsh Eagles averaged 100.3 points during the 1971 state tournament. Special Coaching Notes: A Rocky Mountain News article from February 2005 has identified Angie Paccione as the first woman to coach boys’ basketball in Colorado. Since that publication, additional information has been forwarded to the CHSAA office. In 1943-44, Lois Palmquist of Trinidad, CO, coached the Sopris High School boys’ team. She passed away February 11, 2004. And, Sopris High School is now under the site of the Trinidad Lake Dam waters. Several of her players still reside in the Trinidad area. In La Jara (now Centauri), Nora “Ma” Wilson coached the boys’ teams during the World War II years. Several former players reside in the San Luis Valley, Her great grandson, Curt Wilson, is the principal of Centauri High School.
