Leader:
Dr. Matthew Maughan is the Director of Pharmacy Operations at Sidra Medical and Research Center, Qatar. He has held
positions as the Director of Pharmacy at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Manager of the Children's Hospital
Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center as well as Adjunct Assistant Professor
with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy and Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Maughan received his Doctor
of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and completed both a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice
Residency and a PGY-2 Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina
Medical
Center.
For the past 7 years, Dr. Maughan championed efforts to consolidate the paediatric pharmacy services into one 24-hour
pharmacy staffed by pharmacists and technicians that understand the challenges and opportunities of paediatric medicine.
As a part of this effort, Dr. Maughan has established internship programs, pharmacist development programs and assisted
in the department effort to establish a technician career ladder. Dr. Maughan has led efforts to streamline the pharmacy
operations while further showcasing clinical pharmacy practice to nurse and physician colleagues. He has driven the implementation of Barcode
Medication Preparation Software at 3 institutions and has spoken on the appropriate build and implementation of technology in pharmacy practice.

Workshop
Leader:
Dr. Yousef Alomi, Head of General Administration of Pharmaceutical Care, Ministry of Health (MOH), Saudi Arabia, is
responsible for providing best practice in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice at more than 250 MOH Hospital
Pharmacies and 2000+ Primary Care Center Pharmacies in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Alomi worked as Critical Care and TPN
Clinical Pharmacist and Head of Drug Information Center at King Saud Medical City. Dr. Alomi has held various
positions at King Saud Medical City including Pharmacy Practice Residency Programme Coordinator, Pharmacy Board
Member, Head of Accreditation Site Committee, Saudi Pharmaceutical Society Board Member and Assistant Head of
CME and Research Committee. Dr. Alomi graduated from King Saud University with a degree of Bachelor of
Pharmaceutical Sciences in the year 1992. After six years of higher study, he earned his Master of Clinical Pharmacy from
the same university in 1998. He is an affiliated clinical instructor of Purdue University in the USA. Dr. Alomi is an
Assistant Professor at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. In 2005, he obtained Board Certification of Pharmacotherapy
Specialist (BCPS). In the year 2008, he obtained his diploma in Business Administration from American University in
Egypt and in 2009, he obtained a Board Certification of Nutrition Support Pharmacy (BCNSP). He has conducted several
researches in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice and presented in several national and international conferences and symposiums. He became a
member of advisory board of the Arab Pharmaceutical Journal in 2010.

Workshop C: Role of pharmacists in the management of asthma
Overview:
Asthma is on the rise. Around 50 million asthmatic patients in the MENA region cost the healthcare system around USD 2.5 billion each year. Therefore,
there is a strong need to focus more on managing this disease. As a pharmacist, you can play an important role in counselling patients about asthma and
assisting them in managing the disease.
Learning Objectives:








Discussing key challenges facing pharmacists in managing asthma
Explaining the prevalence and practice of managing asthma in UAE
Exploring the gaps in practice and importance of the pharmacist's role in delivering appropriate management of asthma according to recent
literature and guidelines
Examining the role of pharmacist in counselling, patient education and involving patients in their disease management
Reviewing appropriate techniques and devices used to achieve maximum benefits of drugs
Demonstrating techniques of using inhalers and valve holding chambers to better understand the correct usage

for Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) since 2007. Being a pioneer provider of ambulatory care
pharmaceutical services in this region, he developed the pharmacist-based competency program. Dr. Abdul Sukkur Asali
Ahamed has been recognised as an expert in patient counselling, drug information services and quality improvement
