It is a gathering place for students to study and socialize outdoors or set up a table to distribute information. Many changes have taken place on campus since 1967 and the colonnade, which serves as the entrance to Library West, is in need of being brought up to date to meet the needs of students in the twenty-first century. A modern colonnade designed by Brame Heck Architects, Inc., will complement the upcoming redesigned Plaza of the Americas and provide an enhanced covered outdoor environment for students at Library West. The seating capacity under the colonnade and on adjoining terraces will be 294 at tables, benches and low brick walls. Solar panels will provide electricity for lights, ceiling fans and charging stations at the tables and along the brick walls. The design integrates beautifully into the facade of the library. The colonnade will be privately funded and various levels of naming opportunities are available for sponsorship of a table, bench, the colonnade itself or the colonnade walkway. Your gift will be recognized with a permanent bronze plaque in honor of, in memory of, or in celebration of a loved one or yourself. The name will be associated with the University of Florida for many generations. For more information, please contact Katie Boudreau at 352-273-2505 or [email protected]. Hundreds join the University of Florida to celebrate the Panama Canal’s 100th birthday By Lee Herring Panama Canal Centennial Communications Visitors from Norway, Panama, Australia, Mexico and across the United States traveled to the University of Florida to celebrate the Panama Canal centennial August 15-17. The George A. Smathers Libraries organized the weekend of activities and ongoing exhibits across campus to commemorate the anniversary. The celebratory weekend began August 15 with a presentation by Dr. Richard Cheville, a former Canal Zone physician, on health issues during canal construction. Nearly 80 people attended the lecture and a related exhibit at the Health Science Center Library. Later that evening, 400 people gathered at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for the Summerfest 2014 concert. Maestro James BrooksBruzzese directed the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome and musicians from the Symphony of the Americas. The finale, Rapsodia del Canal de 2 Chapter One FALL 2014 Panama, composed by Juan Castillo to commemorate the centennial, brought the crowd to its feet. The following Panama Canal centennial exhibits are still open across campus: A large crowd turned out for Panama Canal Zone Day August 16 at the Florida Museum of Natural History. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., 1,039 people, including 228 children, visited the museum. From Microscopic to Massive: Worker Health Challenges in the Construction Era Open through February 1, 2015 in the Health Science Center Library Pollera dancers and musicians from the group Sentimiento Panameno delighted the museum crowd throughout the day. Author and artist Al Sprague was on hand to sign copies of his books. A mola-making activity and storytelling entertained children. Panama: Tropical Ecosystem Open through May 31, 2015 in the Florida Museum of Natural History Fossils and butterflies from Panama were on display at the museum as well as the centennial exhibit Panama: Tropical Ecosystem. More than 400 free family photographs were printed with backdrops from Panama and the Canal Zone. Panama Canal Zone Day also included video oral history interviews with 17 people who have connections to the Patterns Past and Present: Arts of Panama Open through June 7, 2015 in the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art The online exhibit: http://exhibits. uflib.ufl.edu/canal100 Hours and directions to the venues: http://cms.uflib.ufl.edu/ PanamaCanalCentennial/Exhibits Canal Zone. The video interviews will be available online, and some of the footage will be assembled for a centennial “time-capsule” video. The festivities continued later that evening with a sellout crowd of 270 people at the Panama Canal Centennial Banquet. Dean of University Libraries Judy Russell welcomed the attendees and thanked all who played a role in bringing the Panama Canal Museum Collection to the University of Florida. “The centennial celebration is the culmination of the work of many people over a long period of time. It is gratifying to have such enthusiastic and dedicated participants to share this celebration with us as we reflect on the monumental achievement of the Panama Canal and honor those who made it possible,” Russell said. Master of Ceremonies and president of the Friends of the Panama Canal Museum Collection Joe Wood introduced Joe Wiegand, who regaled the audience with colorful stories as he portrayed a buoyant Teddy Roosevelt. Curators were on hand August 17 at Smathers Library where about 180 people viewed canal-related exhibits featuring maps, children’s literature, highlights from the Panama Canal Museum Collection, a 38-foot canal model and the second floor gallery exhibit Voices from the Panama Canal. The group also made a visit to Library West to view two small exhibits highlighting Canal Zone life and Theodore Roosevelt political cartoons. Afterward, about 190 people gathered at the Harn Museum of Art for a lecture on molas by author Edith Crouch, followed by a reception and book signing. A related centennial exhibit at the Harn, Patterns Past and Present: Arts of Panama showcased ceramics, stone and metalwork as well as numerous molas from the Panama Canal Museum Collection. “I was thrilled with the amazing turnout and all the great questions and folks who stayed afterwards to talk—an audience of mola lovers. And I’m honored to have had a role in the wonderful centennial events at the University of Florida,” Crouch said. FALL 2014 Chapter One 3 Marston Science Library opens Collaboration Commons The first floor of Marston Science Library – roughly 26,000 square feet – has been transformed into Collaboration Commons and opened on August 27 with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a faculty open house. The state-of-the-art space has a variety of styles of comfortable seating for over 700. President Bernie Machen provided the vision and funding for the space, based on students’ request for additional study space on campus. To make room for the transformation, the government documents collection was moved to an off-campus storage facility and the Map & Imagery Library moved into a renovated and more visible space on the first floor of Smathers Library. “The move to convert library space to study areas mirrors a national trend as more libraries move to digital collections and move low-use print materials off campus,” said Dean of University Libraries Judy Russell. Marston gate counts for the first month of the fall semester were up 24.6% over last year. The count was 88,374 visitors – near the seating capacity of the Ben Hill Griffin football stadium. Amy Buhler, Marston librarian and Associate Chair, said, “We thought it would take a little time for students to start using the space and its services but we were pleasantly surprised to find it was filling up within the first week it was open.” Photo above right: Dean of University Libraries Judy Russell; Library Leadership Board member Wes Marston; Provost/Sr VP Joseph Glover; Faculty Senate Chair & Trustee Pradeep Kumar; VP/Chief CIO Elias Eldayrie; Student Govt President & Trustee Cory Yeffet. Denishawn Dance Collection finding aid By Jim Liversidge Popular Culture Collections The Denishawn Dance Collection, acquired from the (now closed) Eustis, Florida winter home of the Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn dancers, represents the personal and public lives of the Modern Dance pioneers and the founding of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. In its day, Denishawn was synonymous with dance in America. Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman and Jose Limon were just a few of the dancers who began their careers with Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. During the twenties, the two dancers and the Denishawn Company appeared in the famed Ziegfeld Follies, both on Broadway and on national tours. Letters, photographs, programs, posters and other ephemera, from Ted Shawn’s Florida office, will allow the University of Florida students and researchers the opportunity to discover this extraordinary couple and their historic place in the world of dance. The collection is housed in the Popular Culture Collections in the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections, located in Smathers Library (East). http://www.library.ufl.edu/spec/ manuscript/guides/denishawn.htm New members include Maria Huff Edwards, a musicologist and poet living in Gainesville, Florida; Randy Kammer, retired vice president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, living in north Florida; Valrie Minson, chair of the Marston Science Library (Library faculty representative); Lillian Guerra, history professor (University faculty representative); and Donovan Welch, (University student representative). Smathers Libraries appreciate the many supporters who help us in our quest to keep up to date with materials and technologies to better serve students, faculty, staff and researchers. You help make the Libraries the extraordinary places that they are, and we thank you. Gifts like yours enable us to purchase new technologies that students in the 21st century rely on for their studies, such as JSTOR (a digital library of academic journals, books and primary resources), online educational videos and SmartPodiums with touch screen monitors for library instruction In addition, our subject specialists were able to purchase a wide variety of research materials including science books, classic literature, contemporary book arts materials, Judaica books in Latin and Hebrew, rare historical children’s books and transcription of historically valuable oral histories so they can be made available online. The fall 2014 James and Leslie Rutherford Library Student Assistant Scholarship essay competition was won by Arlian Smith, who works at the Marston Science Library. Arlian is a second year nutrition major and hopes to become a physician assistant. She is from Coral Springs, Florida. The $500 scholarship is awarded during the fall and spring semesters to a student assistant employed by the George A. Smathers Libraries, based on an essay competition. Questions and comments should be addressed to the editor, Barbara Hood, (352) 273-2505, or [email protected]. http://cms.uflib.ufl.edu/giving/chap_one DEAN’S MESSAGE As we come to the close of 2014, I would like to share with you some impressive numbers and recap some amazing accomplishments from the last year. For example, 2.65 million patrons visited the six libraries in the George A. Smathers Libraries system. That is enough to fill Ben Hill Griffin football stadium over 29 times. In addition, unique materials in the UF Digital Collections recorded 65,730,875 views and the Libraries’ web pages received 7,679,952 views. In the past year, we repurposed a total of 40,240 sq. ft. to provide students with additional collaborative study areas, enhanced technology and inspiring spaces for all patrons to interact with some of our most valuable collections. The repurposed spaces include the new Judaica suite; the expanded reading room for the Latin American and Caribbean Collection; a more visible location for the Map & Imagery Library; the large, technology-rich Collaboration Commons in Marston Science Library and collaboration stations in the Education Library. In addition, the Libraries Task Force on Services for Students with Disabilities developed the Disability Resources Studio in Library West in partnership with UF Disability Resource Center and other UF campus entities. These spaces and services were made possible through funding from UF President Machen, donors, the student-managed technology fund and through other collaborative relationships. UF has one of the lowest tuition rates in the country, which constrains funding for new initiatives. Consequently, the Libraries augment the budget by securing external funding and local, state, national and international partnerships to acquire, organize and/or create access to significant primary resources. These resources include the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC); the Caribbean Newspaper Digital Library, including recent acquisitions of historical Puerto Rican newspapers; the Florida Digital Newspaper Collection; and a selection of ethnic newspapers, as well as the Panama Canal Museum Collection, author Stetson Kennedy’s papers, the interactive digital collection “Unearthing St. Augustine’s Colonial Heritage” and ARTBOUND, an exhibit and collection of original artist-made books. To address academic library space limitations statewide, we continue to lead an initiative to build a high density storage facility with a capacity of 5.2 million volumes to serve the State University System of Florida. Research and design are completed and we are seeking funding from the Florida legislature to Judith C. Russell construct the facility, at a total Dean of University Libraries cost of $26.7 million. The facility will house the Florida Academic Repository (FLARE), which currently contains 1.9 million volumes contributed by five academic libraries in Florida. FLARE is a statewide asset that is already serving patrons from public and private academic libraries in Florida from a temporary UF facility. The Libraries faculty and staff work diligently to enable access to the large and varied collections and library spaces. I encourage you to visit the Libraries and see the changes and enjoy our new spaces. If you would like to schedule a tour, please contact me at (352) 273-2505 or [email protected]. Judith C. Russell Dean of University Libraries
