THE EAGLE EYE EAGLE POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Christine de Zayas Principal Willowphine Rosado Assistant Principal May 4, 2015 Vol. 15 No. 10 http://eaglepoint.browardschools.com KRUPIN’S CORNER Summer plans are underway and our students will soon begin to wrap up all the things they have learned this year, all their successes, and all lessons learned. Through this yearʼs journey, our students have grown in all academic areas and socially using the 7 habits as stones to paving the path of success. They now are able to refer to the 7 habits by name and apply the characteristics necessary to the habit in their lives. Before we depart and move on to our summer adventures, I would like to introduce the 8th Habit, Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Theirs. During your summer adventures help your children find their inner voice. Once they do, they will lead others to do the same. HEALTH CORNER Did you know that Diabetes is the single most costly chronic disease? Nearly 24 million Americans have Diabetes and currently there is no cure, but significant progress is being made. That's why Eagle Point Elementary is getting involve to help find a cure. Starting on Monday May 4th - Monday May 11th the Diabetic Fundraiser Event will take place. Packets will be sent home from the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) on May 4th to help raise funds for Type 1 Diabetes. The students will have the opportunity to win prizes as they get donations. Let us work together to make a cure a reality. We have (4) Diabetic students on campus that want to say thank you for your help. WHAT IS DIABETES? Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disorder that is resistance to the action of insulin, insufficient insulin secretion, or both. In a body without diabetes, your pancreas produces insulin, a hormone the body uses to change glucose (sugar) in the blood into energy that allows muscles and organs to function. TYPES OF DIABETES There are two type of Diabetes, Type I & II. Type I Diabetes is also known as Juvenile Diabetes, it usually happens in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood and lasts a lifetime. It is an autoimmune disease in which the juvenile's pancreas stops producing insulin that enables them to get energy from food. Juvenile's with Type I Diabetes must take several doses of insulin daily through a pump or by injection sometimes up to 4x's day. Type II Diabetes the body has insulin but is not working to break down the sugars due to other conditions such as overweight or obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and increased cholesterol, hereditary to name a few. WARNING SIGNS FOR DIABETES I INCLUDE: Extreme thirst, frequent urination, drowsiness or lethargy, increased appetite, sudden weight loss, sudden vision change, sugar in the urine, fruity odor on the breath, heavy or labored breathing, stupor or unconsciousness WARNING SIGNS FOR DIABETES II INCLUDE: Polyuria, Polyphagia, Polydypsia, weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, itching of the skin, wounds that are slow to heal WHAT CAN BE DONE. Although diabetes cannot yet be cured, it can be affectively managed by monitoring blood sugar and balancing insulin injections or oral medications with individual meal planning and exercise. For the children with Juvenile Diabetes I, it is important that communication/cooperation between the parent, children and school personnel or childcare providers help each child have a positive and productive experience. Developing and maintaining a plan of action with a doctor is vitally important. While a student is in school, it is important that personnel be educated to signs of Hyper/Hypoglycemia. Hyperglycemia is to much sugar in the blood showing: frequent urination, hunger, extreme thirst, drowsiness. Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar in the blood showing: shaking, sweating, dizziness, headache, fast heartbeat, hunger, weakness/fatigue. Nurse Thomas - Traveling Healthy
