ELKS ELEVATING AMERICA
APRIL 2015
Exalted Ruler’s Message
A new Elk’s year has started and I am very excited that you have elected me as your Exalted Ruler. We have a great group
of officers and committee members who are very knowledgeable and willing to work hard to bring this lodge to an even higher level
of performance. Anyone who has an idea or an event to improve the lodge, or to move it forward, please let me or one of the officers
or committee members know. We will definitely take it under consideration and if it is at all possible move toward making it a reality.
We have been fortunate to have a new chef in the kitchen, Patsy Lacerenza. Pat’s lunches have been well received and
the dinner he prepared for Initiation was fantastic!! In April he will begin to serve dinners, so plan to make reservations and support
Pat’s efforts and increase revenue for our lodge.
My hope for this year is to have more members involved in volunteering their time. We have a number of members that
seem to constantly volunteer their time and I would love to see more members join them in volunteering their talents. An extra set
of hands, new ideas or an improved way to get events organized and done are always welcome. We have had a lot of good years
and I hope we can make this an even greater one.
The month of April has the annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 4, the 4 bands for C.C.M.C., and the Drug Awareness and
Americanism Youth Banquet to name a few.
And now for April’s Elk of the Month. This person has always done a lot for the lodge, but he went far and above his regular
duties by spending many hours working diligently, cleaning the entire kitchen and making sure that the grills were properly and
professionally cleaned in preparation for the incoming chef. My Elk of the Month is Charlie Simpson. Thanks Charlie you did a great
job!!!

The fraternal year of 2014-2015 year has come to an end, and I would
like to thank several members for their hard work and dedication to the
lodge. A huge thanks goes out to Bill Gannon and his entire house
committee. Without their fundraising efforts it would not have been such a
successful lodge year. Thank you to the Board of Trustees for hanging in
and making some tough decisions on some extremely important issues.
I extend a huge thank you to all of my lodge officers for your support
and efforts, especially Jon Arthur PPD, SVP for his secretarial duties and
Pat Jennings our treasurer. Thank you to all the committee chairs for your
hard work in meeting the goals that were set forth by Grand Lodge. Thank
you Ron Fraser and Angela Halloran for your hard work on putting together
a beautiful Elks Call for all of our members keeping them up to date with
what is going on at the lodge. Thank you to Bob Ranaldo for maintaining
our Elks 265 website, one of the best in the state.
Finally, I would like to thank my parents Mike and Kathy Gannon for their guidance and
wisdom through this journey. They have always picked me up during some of the more difficult times.
They gave me advice when I needed it and always were there with love and support. I have learned
so much in the past 5 years and will cherish the memories of serving the lodge for the rest of my life.
I am very proud to turn the gavel over to Mike Madzek, our new Exalted Ruler, and his
great team of officers. I wish you all well and if you need anything don’t hesitate to ask. I could go
on and on with individual thanks but I wanted to keep it short and sweet. Thank you to everyone who
supported the lodge this year, and I strongly encourage you to continue to do so.
Fraternally yours,
Ryan Gannon, PER

A new year is upon us. With this year, there is a sense of renewed hope that the future of
our Lodge can be strong if we all band together in an effort to revitalize what once was a thriving
enterprise. We have had our share of misfortunes and failed efforts to get the gas station property
back into the profit-maker it once was. Changes in the kitchen through the
last few years have weighed heavily on our cash flow also. We can look
at these situations in two ways: as burdens, or as opportunities. I believe
that we must begin the process of rethinking these as opportunities.
With this in mind, I am asking the Officers, many in new positions, to rally
around the Lodge’s issues and come together as one cohesive unit to
address the issues and meet regularly to brainstorm and to work toward
coming up with ideas and a path to the profitability that we once enjoyed.
I had to drop about 60 members from our rolls last month due to nonpayment of dues, resulting in yet another loss in our membership. This
continues to erode our member base every year. With all the good that
our Lodge does in our community, state and its contributions to the Order
nationally, it is a shame to see that many of our members drop annually.
Many of these members have been members less than 5 years. This is
troublesome, as it means that these members are left alone to fend for
themselves. As members, it is our duty to sponsor people into the Order, but that is just the beginning
of your duty to that prospective member. Once initiated, it is up to you, the sponsor, to make sure that
this new member meets people and is allowed the opportunity to create relationships of their own.
Please keeps this in mind going forward.
Always remember, that if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, you may reach
me at 203-755-1779. I am in the office at least 2 nights during the week. The sign in the lobby informs
you when I am in the Lodge. If I am not in the office, I will return your call the next time I am in. But
the best method to get hold of me is to email me at [email protected] I only ask that you sign your
emails with your name and/or membership number so that I don’t have to try to figure out who you
are from an email “nickname.”
Fraternally,
JON ARTHUR, PPD, SVP

Secretary
LETTER OF THANKS
Dear Brother and Sister Elks,
I would like to thank everyone who came down to the Lodge on Feb. 24 to vote for the five-year Trustee
position. I am grateful that you put your trust in me.
I would also like to thank my gracious opponent, Bill Gannon, for being a gentleman even though either
one of us, in my eyes, would have been a great choice.
I look forward to bringing this Lodge forward into the future. Once again, thank you for entrusting this
position to me.
Yours in Elkdom,
Anthony Cavallo Jr.

After this beautiful snowy winter, it’s time to start thinking of those wonderful races at Saratoga for this coming summer,
so get your seat reserved early!
I wish to send a special “THANK YOU” to all those great volunteers manning the grill and preparing all the condiments
for people to enjoy. I could not do it without your help, and I am very grateful!
Again this year we are having three trips for Saratoga. They are: Saturday August 15, Saturday August 22, and Sunday
August 30 2015. A deposit of $25 dollars will guarantee a seat on the bus.
The deal is still the same, $ 80 dollars per person that includes breakfast at the Lodge at 7:00am. The bus will leave our
parking lot at 7:30, and we should arrive at the Saratoga Springs Park no later than 10:30am, so we can enjoy the cook out. We
then proceed to the race track between 12:00 and 12:30, and will leave at the end of the 8th race.
You are still welcome to stop at the Lodge for dinner after the race and enjoy a great meal. I will be making arrangements
with the new cater to make sure we will be served on the return to the Lodge.
The price of the trip includes breakfast at Lodge, bus transportation, barbeque at Saratoga Springs Park, admission and
grandstand seating at the Racetrack, all the beverages you can handle, including the ones you can fit in your cooler, providing that
you bring one. (Coolers are allowed to be carried into the Racetrack, but absolutely NO glass bottles are allowed inside the Race
Track whatsoever).

How to keep eggs from cracking when you boil them:
1. Place eggs very gently in the bottom of the pot.
2. Pour cold water around (not on) them. By exposing cold eggs to warm or hot water, you are "shocking" them and causing the cracks
to form.
3. Use 1 teaspoon of vinegar for each egg. Just add it to the water before you turn the burner on. Adding vinegar to the water may help
the proteins in the egg white coagulate faster to plug the cracks in the shell

31st Annual Sportsmen’s Holiday
June 4th-7th, 2015 at Wildwood, New Jersey
It’s only two months from kick-off for our 30th trip to New Jersey. John Kunkel and I are once again co-chairmen of this event. Ed Charette, Dick Champagne
and Tony Barzydlo are once again in charge of all things having to do with the golf arrangements. Payments for the golf will again be made in advance through
me, John Carosella
*** Wildwood Commitments and deposits of $100.00 per person are due NOW!***
Here are the rules of the road:
1.
The trip is limited to current Elk members, and those nonmembers who have previously gone on the trip for last. If there is someone who
wishes to go on the trip for the first time this year, he will need to be in process of becoming an Elks 265 member.
*** Wildwood Commitments and deposits of $100.00 per person are due NOW!***
2. I have already reserved the entire Aztec and Safari motels for our trip and eliminate multiple locations and avoid potential confusion over room
assignments. The fee is $320 per person double occupancy and $425 for a single room. We think golf will remain approximately the same at $118.00 for
Friday and Saturday but this could change once Ed Charette finalizes details. Those wanting to play Thursday, June 4th when we arrive will make their own
arrangements at the course. Ed Charette is working on this as we speak. It is of critical important that you advise us at time of your deposit if you are
planning on playing golf Friday and Saturday. We used up all slots last year, and so we need to know up front who expects to play, and who your foursome
will be as soon as possible, so as not to disappoint anybody.
*** Wildwood Commitments and deposits of $100.00 per person are due NOW!***
3. All transportation to Wildwood will be the responsibility of participating members. We would appreciate any members with vans to assist
in transporting luggage, golf clubs, and food and beverage supplies as in the past.
*** Wildwood Commitments and deposits of $100.00 per person are due NOW!***
NO cash will be accepted for accounting purposes, CHECKS ONLY.
Make all checks payable to Elks Lodge #265.

Drug Awareness Poster & Essay Contest
We are very happy to announce that this years’ Drug Awareness Poster and Essay Contest was again a very
successful one with over 300 entries. Although not as many as last year, Mother Nature definitely had a hand in
keeping the numbers down. With many of the local schools being closed at least one day a week since the beginning
of the year, teachers and educators had other prepared lesson plans and requirements that needed
to be accomplished first. We were still able to have 4 winners in each of the 6 age groups to bring to the District judging.
At the District level we had 2 first place winners, 2 second place winners and 3 fourth place winners.
These entries will go on to the Judging for the State Contest; names will be announced after the final judging.
I would like to thank the following volunteers for giving up their time to come to the lodge and spend several
hours judging the entries. The following volunteers were present at Lodge Level: Lynne Gregory, Wendy Hartley,
Eugene LaFauci, Ginny Leary, Michael Madzek, Linda Olson and Ellen Shaw.
At the District judging from our lodge: Kathy Gannon, Wendy Hartley, Ginny Leary, Linda Olson, Michael
Madzek and Margaret Simpson.
From Torrington #372 - Jean Pillarella, Linda Scappini and Breeanna Sullivan
Winsted Lodge #844 - Tom Matthews
New Britain Lodge #957 - Robert Ferone, Sr. PDD and Jack Nixer.
Thank you all for all the time and effort that you put in to making this contest a success. We look forward to
honoring all of the winners at our Youth Banquet at the end of the month.

31st Annual Sportsmen’s Holiday
June 4th- 7th, 2015 at Wildwood, New Jersey
Fellow Sportsmen,
It’s less than five months from kick-off for our 31st trip to New Jersey. John Kunkel and I are
once again being co-chairmen of this event. Ed Charette, Dick Champagne and Tony Barzydlo are again in charge of all things having to do with the golf arrangements. Payments for the
golf will again be made in advance through me.
Here are the rules of the road:
1. Last year we had 106 participants and 72 golfers. The trip will again be limited to current
Elk members and those not members who have previously gone on the trip. If there is someone
who wishes to go on the trip for the first time this year, he will need to be in process of becoming an Elks 265 member.
2. I have already reserved the entire Aztec and Safari motels for our trip and eliminate multiple locations and avoid potential confusion over room assignments. I expect room prices to increase somewhat over last year but not drastically. As a result the fee will be
$320 per person double occupancy and $425 for a single room. We think golf will remain approximately the same at $118.00 for
Friday and Saturday but this could change once Ed Charette finalizes details. Those wanting to play Thursday, June 4th when we
arrive will make their own arrangements at the course. Ed Charette is working on this as we speak. Critically Important is we are
advised at time of your deposit if you are planning on playing golf Friday and Saturday. We used up all slots last year so we need to
know whom up front expects to play and your foursome if available early on so as not to disappoint anybody.
3. All transportation to Wildwood will be the responsibility of participating members. We would appreciate any members with vans
to assist in transporting luggage, golf clubs, and food and beverage supplies as in the past.
A deposit of $100 per person will be expected by Tuesday March 17, 2015, coincidentally, St. Patrick’s Day; not easy to forget.
Here’s comes the standard speech. I had to chase around after a few of you last year. Please don’t make me alter my usual charming
personality. Now that I’m retired I have even less inclination to track down those missing in action. I would prefer NO cash be exchanged for accounting purposes and to not challenge my memory. Make all checks payable to Elks Lodge #265. Checks can be left
at the bar to my attention- NO Cash. Payment in full for rooms AND golf will be expected by Friday, May 22nd, 2015.
4. Last year 35 or so participants elected to go down on Wednesday taking advantage of a generous offer from Adamo to charge
only $50 per room for the extra day. That offer is extended again this year. The payment for the additional day is not in the trip package but will be settled individually by those who choose to go on Wednesday and Adamo. I will need to know well in advance who
wants to go Wednesday so I can make arrangements with Adamo. One monetary change this year: if you plan on going down on
Wednesday for the additional day, a fee of $25 will
be expected to cover additional food and beverage
costs for the extra day. It’s not fair for others who
come down on Thursday for the weekend to pay the
same price but not pay for the extra day.
