Printed 25/05/15 THE PARISH CLERK. This story covers the genealogical history of a number of Fairhead Families. It also gives linking information concerning The Three Brothers branch and the Bricklayers branch, and at the same time carries them back to earlier days, and the Suffolk Weavers branch. The genealogical information contained therein makes this story perhaps the most valuable to date. Doubtless a number of readers will fault some of the statements made and may be able to give a truer account of the happenings. This can be only part of the full story and any additions will be most welcome. A.E.Fairhead Norwich March 1973. 753 The Parish Clerk. Main Branch. 1 Printed 25/05/15 The Parish Clerk. Fairhead, myself and fellowship members in general and added to Albert's work to give a fuller and more informative story. This record is compiled from Albert's original book and the new information collected since that time. It should be noted that the generation numbers do not start at one, but carry on from a previous book, in this case The Suffolk Weavers. For the origins of the Parish Clerk Branch see the Suffolk Weavers. Early in the seventeenth century the job of Parish Clerk was of no mean occupation, in fact this work was possibly the most important of all Parish projects. In those days before the local authorities (as we now know them) came into being, it was the church that undertook the work necessary for the well being of the inhabitants of the Parish concerned. Firstly, there was the Lord of the Manor (the Squire) who inherited the Parish estate (mostly referred to as the Hall Estate) from his forebears, which in a number of cases was handed down from the Manorial Estates. He was 'Lord' accountable only to the King; under him were his Lieutenant, the Incumbent (Rector or Vicar) with his faithful servants the Churchwardens, the Parish Clerk, and possibly two Sidesmen. This small body had to attend to the needs of the Parishioners, spiritually and bodily, including the levying of rates and the sustenance of paupers. Practically the whole Parish was owned and directed by the Lord of the Manor, whose forebears provided adequate church space, which was expected to be used. The Church was a central establishment for the Parish and the people's existence was tied to this establishment. A large section of the inhabitants were employed by the Lord of the Manor and being so employed were subject to the discipline of their master, and others with some independence such as Farmers, Shopkeepers, etc., lived in property owned by the Lord, to whom obedience was desirable. William was the eldest son of Phillip 1669 and Mary (nee Below), one of a family of nine children. *************************************** This branch of the family continues to the present day, but also splits into sub branches, which are covered in subsequent sections, in this document. The links are :- The Hales Branch ( below), the Norwich Branch (below). The Ludham Branch (below), The Mundham Branch (below), The 10th Generation. Phillip 1669 (438) married Mary Below (439) at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedingham, Norfolk, on the 3rd October 1695 and they had the following family:Elizabeth (440) William (441) Mary (442) John (443) Phillip (444) James (445) Mary (446) Grace (447) Elizabeth (448) b b b b b b b b b 30th January 1696 11th December 1697 9th June 1699 8th March 1701 6th June 1704 27th December 1706 30th January 1707 30th October 1708 1710 All born at Bedingham, Norfolk. This was the world of William Fairhead (1697) who became Parish Clerk of Bedingham at a very young age in 1720. In those days the choice for this post was limited to the few fortunate individuals with the necessary educational qualifications and William's parents, Phillip and Mary, equipped him for this task. The wardens were possibly very capable in deciding who should pay and who should receive, but the matter of keeping the books was a job more suited to the young Fairhead. Although there was a large family born, a number died very young. It appears that in adulthood the aforementioned William had possibly no more than one brother and two or three sisters. William 1697 (441) undertook his job with great zeal and accomplishment, mostly known as 'Will' Fairhead, his services were perpetually being sought from one end of the Parish to the other. He grew to become a much loved servant, respected and held in high esteem by all, and the appreciation he received for his work gave him rewarding satisfaction. Elizabeth Rix (449) became his bride, being married, at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedingham, on the 2nd June 1719, shortly before his being appointed Parish Clerk, and the following family resulted :James (450) Sarah (451) William (452) Elizabeth (453) Samuel (454) Mary (455) b b b b b b April 1721 November 1722 April 1725 November 1727 1730 12th December 1733 He continued to give this splendid service to his Parish for nearly 60 years until he was over 80 years of age, surely a record for service to one community. He died, the church register states, "on the 29th May 1785 at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 18 days, an honest, industrious, inoffensive man, a pauper", his whole life and all that he possessed given to the Church and the Parish. There could be some prejudice here, but Albert states that he felt that William Fairhead 'was possibly the greatest humanitarian this parish ever had'. His wife, Elizabeth, died on the 31 st March 1761, so William spent the last 20 years of his life without his companion. During this period his family, who had made their own way, were growing older and had little need, so that the Church and the Parish became richer. Mary 1699 (442) died in infancy. His wife, Frances, died in 1772 and William went to live at Mundham with his son John who had recently taken over a farm there. He confessed and was sentenced to imprisonment in the county goal for 10 days. (537) The report in the local paper was as follows :Norwich Mercury 21.10.1848. "James Fairhead, aged 18 pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with having on the 23rd of July last, at Saxlingham, stolen a coat, the property of Elizabeth Fuller. 10 days imprisonment with hard labour." In 1850 he was in court again, and on the 20 th March he was on trial before Justices of the Peace Henry Dover, Isaac Jermy, Samuel Bignold and Robert Gilbert. The charge was that on the 7 th March he committed 'Larceny after conviction'. He was found guilty and the conviction was to be transported for 7 years. The report in the local paper was :The Parish Clerk. Main Branch. 18 Printed 25/05/15 Norwich Gazette 23.3.1850. "James Fairhead, aged 19, charged with stealing a Gun, the property of Robert Edwards of Saxlingham after a former conviction. Sentenced to 7 years transportation." From these two reports it can be deduced that James's birthday is sometime between March & October, although the year of 1832 would appear to be incorrect, possibly this was the year in which he was baptised. He arrived in Australia in May 1853, having departed from England on the 22 nd December 1852 on a ship called the "Pyrenees". In the time between his trail and leaving England he most likely would have been held on board a prison ship at Portsmouth until it was full. He was listed as Convict No. 1863. John died at Topcroft on the 29th July 1875, having been widowed since the 14th February 1873. At the time of the 1851 Census they were living in Loddon, although James was not registered there at the time, there is, however, a James living with the Fuller family, who were neighbours, stated to be 18 years of age, and born at Topcroft, working as an Ag Lab. It is quite probable that this is John’s son. ************************************** The 15th Generation. The record of burial states that she died on the 30 th November 1854 at 100 years, but according to the census returns of 1841 and 1851 she was 102. The family of James and Susan were :- William 1787 (523) married Ann Hall Smith (732), a local girl of 16 years, on the 5 th July 1814 at Ludham, and from this union the following family came along :Clarissa (733) Clarissa (734) William James (735) Harriet Smith (736) Thomas Shiliot (737) George Silver (738) Susanna Baker (739) James (740) Mary Ann (741) Rosetta (742) James (743) Agnes Simpson (744) Elizabeth Charlotte (745) Henry Wood (746) b b b b b b b b b b b b b b 16th November 1814 4th February 1816 28th June 1819 18th October 1820 15th June 1823 12th April 1825 24th June 1827 6th March 1829 22nd June 1830 31st December 1832 1834 10th November 1835 22nd January 1836 17th January 1838 A large proportion of this family died in infancy. Albert states in his record - "like many Fairhead women, I suggest she inherited business qualities and undertook shop keeping. She was doubtless a very independent individual, again a common characteristic found in the female species of the family, but with all her independent and masculine qualities the female propensity arose", and she became the mother of two boys thus :(734) William Harcourt (758) Walter Bathurst (759) 25th October 1837 1839 b b Ludham She was a very remarkable woman and as the mother of these boys would normally be subject to much gossip, particularly with such contacts as shop keeping would bring, but it appears that she went through life defying it The Ludham Branch of the Parish Clerk. 57 Printed 25/05/15 all. It would appear that both children were brought up outside their mothers care, William possibly by his father and Walter by his uncle William. At the time of the 1851 Census she was living with two of her brothers at Ludham Street, Tunstead, they were George stated to be a Carrier and James, a Wheelwright. Why Clarissa did not marry will never be known , but perhaps it was this peculiar characteristic of the Fairhead women that a number remain unmarried due to partly to an independent streak in their nature. She died at the great age of 91 years on the 19 th November 1907, thus completing a long and successful business career, and was buried at Ludham. A memorial stone marks her grave. Although she has long passed from us the name of Clarissa Fairhead the shopkeeper still lives in this Broadland village. It appears that George Silver was a blacksmith by trade, and also opened up a carriers business. Perhaps this was William James 1818 who gave it up. During the 1851 census he was living with his sister Clarissa at the shop. This would have been before he married in August of that year. Nothing more is known concerning this first son of Clarissa. Walter Bathurst 1839 (759) In the case of Walter the second name was much used and as no entry can be found in the Register of Births at Somerset House in the name Fairhead, it is possible that both children were registered as William Harcourt and Walter Bathurst, and it is very much in question whether William and his descendants became Fairheads or Harcourt's. Walter as stated was brought up by his uncle William (Clarissa's brother). Again as in the case of William Harcourt, Walter was mostly recorded as Walter Bathurst and may be seen in the census return of 1841. In the return Albert found the entry of Walter Bathurst, age 3, in the household of William and Ann. Also he found a second Walter Bathurst, age 30, Vicar of Ludham. However, later he found a record of marriage between Walter Fairhead, Coach Proprietor, father unknown, residing at Stalham, and Fulleretta Neslen (780) (of St. Martin of Palace, Norwich, daughter of George Neslen, Farmer, b abt 1836 Burgh Castle, Suffolk) in 1873 at Norwich. Walter's age was given as 35, while Fulleretta was 37. It would appear that Walter, while making his coach trips to Norwich, encountered his bride. In 1901 he was listed as an ‘Omnibus Driver’. For some reason Walter did not share his mother's home and that small town of Stalham became his choice. The second name, Bathurst, is now dropped and does not appear to be used any more.
