QUARTERLY HIGHLIGHTS
Valentine’s Dinner & Photo Contest
by Sharon Rehling & Karen Sattler
The 2015 Valentine’s dinner was a great success with 56 people
attending. Thank you Bob Wilson for organizing, running and
presenting a beautiful array of photographs of our flora and fauna
taken by our local photographers. Once again Karen Sattler from FL
and Sharon Rehling from Watersmeet produced a creative evening
topped by a wonderful meal served at the Gateway Restaurant. The
tables were set beautifully with a small chocolate heart to match our
feelings for our many friends attending. Thanks to the ladies who
donated their time and effort to make it a joyful evening by handling
the reservations and decorations and to the Gateway for opening
their doors for the private party event. Check out more photos of
the festivites and the contest photos at http://fishandgameclub.org/

UPCOMING OUTINGS CALENDAR
The members of the Outdoor Activity Committee are looking
forward to the arrival of warmer temperatures so that we can
begin to enjoy our beloved outdoor activities. The planned outdoor
activities for this spring and early summer are below. More will
come and will be noted in the July newsletter.
May 13 10AM, Spring Wildflower Hike
June 1710:30AM, Canoe/kayak the Ontonagon
UPCOMING OUTINGS THE INSIDE SCOOP
The winter weather proved to be difficult for our scheduled winter
outdoor activities. While the horse drawn sleigh ride was enjoyed
by over twenty hearty members who braved a cold January
evening, our scheduled cross country ski, snowshoe, and potluck
dinner scheduled for the Pauly’s home and ski trails was cancelled
due to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures. The hosts
were unable to reschedule the event.
Our March ski and snowshoe outing scheduled at the Sylvania
Outfitter trails in Watersmeet was cancelled because of
unseasonably warm temperatures that melted the snow. Here’s
hoping that Mother Nature cooperates with our spring events!
Spring Wildflower Identification Hike
by Will Buergy
We will host a spring ephemeral wild flower hike with noted naturalist
John Bates tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 13. We will
meet John at an area trail at 10:00 AM that morning for a hike
expected to last about 2 hours. This date will be dependent on the
timing of the emergence of the spring flowers, so we will provide
an update on the location and date of this event approximately one
week prior to May 13. There will be a charge of approximately
$7 per person to cover John’s appearance. ($125 divided by the
number of participants.) Mary Thomas will handle the sign up for
this event and she can be reached at [email protected] or
715-547-3556.
Outing on the Ontonagon by canoe/
kayak
Our June outing will be a canoe/kayak outing on the Middle Branch
of the Ontonagon River on Wednesday, June 17 (rain date June
18). We will meet at Sylvania Outfitters, located just west of
Watersmeet on the south side of Highway 2, at 10:30 that morning.
Sylvania Outfitters will provide transportation to and from the river
for all participants and their watercraft. The fee for transporting
you and your kayak or canoe will be $5 per person. For those who
wish to rent a canoe or kayak from Sylvania Outfitters, the cost will
be $25 per kayak or $37 per canoe, including transportation to and
from the river. Please reserve your canoe or kayak ahead of the
event if you will be renting from Sylvania Outfitters. Their phone
number is 906-358-4766.
The outing should last approximately two and a half hours and
everyone is encouraged to bring a sack lunch and beverage for
a picnic along the way. Please register for this event with Will
Buergey at [email protected] or 906-544-2673, even if
you have reserved a watercraft directly with Sylvania Outfitters.

Change Coming. As of May 1, 2015 the Club will no longer be
participating in Trig’s charitable giving program. On May 1st Trig’s
will shift to a program that will offer participating organizations
the ability to buy Trig’s gift cards at a 3 % discount. In turn, the
organizations will sell them to families/individuals at face value.
The Club can continue to benefit from Trig’s existing program until
May 1st. So when you shop at Trig’s, write the Club’s ID number,
44s, on your receipt and deposit the receipt in the designated box
at the Trig’s store in Eagle River. The receipt can be deposited on
the day of purchase or any day thereafter until April 30th. The Club
receives 1 % of the total amount accumulated from the receipts
with ID number 44s noted on them. So far this fiscal year we have
received $97. Since March 31, 2007 the Club has received $982
from this program. These funds have been one of the sources of
revenue for paying for the Club’s operating expenses.

Financial Support from AmazonSmile Foundation
AmazonSmile Foundation informed me that one or more Amazon
customers had elected to financially support the Club when they
shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com).
AmazonSmile
Foundation created a program where Amazon donates 0.5% of
the purchase price of eligible products to charitable organizations
selected by their customers. I have registered and created an
account for the Club so that donations can be received from this
program. If you would like more information on AmazonSmile, refer

NATURE NOTES BY PETER DRING
SPRING FEVER
THE SOIL CYCLE
This is the place and now is the
time to loaf, daydream, sniff some
fresh air and soak up sunshine.
The best cure for spring fever is
to relax and enjoy it.
Hail to the soil beneath!
To you this tree I bequeath.
Take it as part of your own,
Give it your earthy tone.
And by its death and decay
In its place, some future day,
Give us a new plant array.
UNDERGROUND OCEAN
A few feet straight down is the
surface of 8 loosely connected
oceans of underground water.
This is called the water table.
Usually this moisture is held

it is slowed

Treasurer’s Report
by Dale Sharpee
Your membership dues provide the majority of the revenue that is
budgeted to be used to support the Club’s programs and activities
as well as its administrative expenses. As of March 1st the
revenues received from these dues, $2,890, was $10 less than
what had been budgeted for the fiscal year.
Expenses that have been paid during the first eight months of the
fiscal year were in line with what had been budgeted. As of March
1st funds are available to meet the operating expenses that were
budgeted for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.
I did not enroll the Club in Script (Trig’s new gift card program)
because it would be akin to the Treasurer supervising a small retail
business. The members of the Board were made aware of my
decision.
The Club is in the 3rd year of a 5 year cost sharing agreement with
the Ottawa National Forest for the maintenance and grooming of
the hiking and x-country ski trail. The Ottawa National Forest has
budgeted funds to reimburse the Club for a portion of the grooming
and maintenance expenses that are incurred by the Club during
the current federal fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2014 thru Sept. 30, 2015).
So far this fiscal year the amount received from contributions to
the Education Fund is $3,290. (See Education Fund article on the
right.) Thank-you to those of you who have contributed to this
fund.

HOLLOW TREE
in Sylvania Wilderness
Jeff Pytlarz at the HOLLOW TREE in the Fall of
2014 during a trail clearing mission.
Location - At the corner
of the intersection of the
trail coming east from
Clark Lake and the trail
going north which passes
on the east side of Deer
Island Lake and continues
up between Crooked Lake
and Mountain Lake.
This is the infamous HOLLOW TREE in Sylvania.
Jim Floriano skied passed it on 1/13/15.
From Bob Turnquist - The Hollow Tree is an old Yellow Birch.
I first saw the tree over 20 years ago during a spring hike with
friends. They had a daughter about 7 years old who was getting
bored walking through Sylvania with us so I would run ahead
and hide to keep her interested. So one time I ran behind the
hollow tree to hide and “discovered it”, at least for me. It seems
that today it looks pretty much as it did then.
