Little by Little 5 D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S The first rule of the musical is: if you can’t say it, sing it. That means emotional states that are too intense to be conveyed by words alone, have to use music to elevate the dramatic action. So when I learned that Little by Little contained no dialog at all, I thought to myself “Boy, this must be a fun ride.” And it is. The places that these three friends go to and through as they learn about life, love, honesty and responsibility are all very familiar, and the cleverness of this piece is that we can all identify with at least one of the characters and their situation. What speaks to me most about this show, though, is the music itself; because to me, all of life is played out as one never ending song, and our hearts beat to the rhythms of joy and pain, gain and loss. What this musical story says loud and clear, and what the characters discover, is that songs sound better sung together rather than solo.
