When performing on TV in 1956, host Milton Berle advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, "Let 'em see you, son." Elvis' gyrating hips caused outrage across the U.S. and within days he was nicknamed Elvis the Pelvis. 9. Elvis bought his mansion, Graceland, in Memphis, TN in 1957 for $100,000. It was named by its previous owner after his daughter, Grace. 10. In 1956, he began his film career with a western, Love Me Tender. Women didn’t patronize or even work in diners until after the 1920s. Diners were parked across from factories and filled with laborers. They had a saloon-type atmosphere and women generally didn't feel comfortable in them. It wasn’t until WWII that women were encouraged to work and eat in diners. 2. In 1941 in The Diner magazine, writer Sam Yellin listed the reasons why women should work in diners, he said: A. Women will work for less pay B. Women will work harder than men C. Women are always happy D. Women can talk and work at the same time E. Women are cleaner and more efficient than men F. Women are more honest than men G. Women don’t steal H. Women won’t stay out late drinking and call in sick the next day 3. The stigma that diner waitresses have loose morals may have come from the 1920s when prostitutes lied and told police that they were waitresses (to explain the cash they were holding). 4. The average career waitress makes $20 to $30 an hour with tips. 5. Regular customers are their lifeline. Some regulars come in three times a day. Many career waitresses in Counter Culture have waited on four generations of the same family and if a waitress quits and moves to another restaurant, her regular customers will follow her throughout her entire career. 6. Seniority pays off. Despite the common assumption that waitressing offers no benefits, some diners offer their longstanding waitresses a higher hourly wage, health insurance, retirement benefits, Christmas bonuses and paid vacations. 7. Waitressing is easier for lifers. Being experienced and having regular customers cuts their serving time and labor in half. 8. The physical nature of the work actually helps older waitresses age better. Ina Kapitan, age 83 says, “Waitressing helps my arthritis. If I stayed home and did nothing I would be crippled. My doctor says whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.” 12 Get Together Ina Kapitan Salads/Slaaie & Toasteds Griekse Pasta Slaai Penne pasta topped with a mixture of the following: fresh garlic, salt & freshley ground black pepper, lemon, lemon zest and greek yoghurt with black olives and cocktail tomatoes Hoenderslaai R50 R65 Biltong en groenteslaai Lettuce with cocktail tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, topped with chicken breast fillet, cheese and avo (when in season). The Rhythm & Blues Charts feature AfricanAmerican artists playing to a predominately AfricanAmerican audience in urban centers and the south. Cleveland, Ohio radio Disc Jockey Alan Freed is an exception with his "Moondog Show" where he spins up-tempo rhythm & blues hits, but aims his show beyond the traditional AfricanAmerican audience for R&B and gains a wide audience of both white and black teenagers. Freed eventually names this cross-current of musical styles and influences - electric blues, boogie, jazz, gospel, R&B vocal groups and country - "Rock and Roll". The solid body electric guitar becomes commercially available in the early fifties and is quickly adapted by R&B artists, as well as Pop artists. The 78 RPM record is replaced by the LP (long playing) vinyl album and the 45 RPM single is introduced. In 1953, Bill Haley and His Comets are the first to hit the pop charts with a true rock and roll song, taking their single "Crazy Man Crazy" to #12. Black R&B artists such as Doo Wop group the Orioles achieve crossover success on the Pop Charts in 1953 with their R&B hit "Crying In The Chapel". More cross-over hits from black R&B artists such as Fats Domino and The Platters climb the pop charts. White artists such as Pat Boone, The Crewcuts and Georgia Gibbs find success covering R&B hits and turning them into hits on the pop charts. Independent record labels such as Sun (Memphis), Ace (Jackson, MS), Vee-Jay (Gary, IN), Chess (Chicago), Specialty Records (Los Angeles) and many other labels are quick to pick up on the opportunity and begin to release Rock and Roll records from newly signed artists. In 1955 Rock and Roll has its first nationwide #1 hit when Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" tops the Pop Charts. Although considered a novelty or fad by most, rock proves it's staying power. In 1955 black R&B artists Little Richard and Chuck Berry score significant Pop hits. Scouts from RCA records, looking to sign their own Rock and Roll performer, buy out the contract of Memphis singer Elvis Presley from regional label Sun Records. In April 1956 Elvis Presley tops the Pop Charts with his first RCA single release "Heartbreak Hotel". By the end of the year he would be the first artist ever to have nine singles in the Hot 100 at one time. By 1957 rock and roll artists appear regularly on the popular music charts and by 1959 rock and roll records account for 43% of all records sold. The end of the decade is marked by tragedy as a February 1959 plane crash takes the lives of rock and roll stars Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. 18 Cold Refreshments/ Koue Drinkgoed Ouma Netta se Gemmerbier Borreltjies ini kies - assorted cold drinks Mina Moo - Fresh Milk Dorslesser - Still water Sparkling water Appletiser/Grapetiser Smoothies Non Dairy - Made from real fruit Smoothies Dairy - Made from real fruit Iced Tea Roses cordial - Passion Fruit / Lime / Cola R17 R19 R15 R17 R20 R24 R29 R32 R22 R28 Tonic with lemonade Iced Coffee - a shot of cold espresso mixed with crushed ice and milk Float - soft drink of your choice topped with ice cream Fruit Shake - seasonal fresh fruits blended with ice cream and fruit juice Daisy de Melker (Milkshake) - bubblegum, lime, strawberry, vanilla, horlicks, coffee, chocolate, milo, peanut butter and milkybar Elvis Shake - banana & peanutbutter R24 R29 R32 R30 R35 milkshake Bottled fruit juice - assorted flavours R20 Get Together 19 Alcoholic Drinks/ Alkoholiese Drinkgoed Amstel Black Label Castle/ Light Millers Heineken Savanna Dry/Light Ciders - ask your waitron about our selection Jannie Petrus - (Don Pedro) choose between Whiskey, Kahlua, Amarula R22 R22 R22 R22 R24 R28 R28 R35 Wyne Robertson Dry/Semi Sweet per glass Robertson Rose per glass Robertson Dry Red per glass Robertson Dry/Semi Sweet per bottle Robertson Rose per bottle Robertson Dry Red per bottle R26 R26 R28 R100 R100 R120 Get Together 21 22 Kinderjare Kan jy onthou Ek was gelukkig om groot te word in 'n era waar daar nog nie televisie, rekenaars, videospeletjies, sms’e, facebook, twitter en soortgelyke tydverdrywe uitgedink was nie. 23 Gaan "like" ons op Facebook
