A self-serve table is set up in the lobby at the TPCC rehearsal site with a good supply of bottled water, plus a collection box for donations. Recommended donation is $1/ bottle. So get hydrated early and often with some high-quality H2O. The fund will be administered by Russ Powell and Dave Roberts and will be based on financial need. In order for this fund to make a major impact, we are going to have to drink a lot of water. So drink up as you "Thirst for Pittsburgh" and don't forget to donate $$'s. BE AN ANGEL! e j n q s w Want to get involved with the Angels’ activities? Contact Dianne Roberts at [email protected] to see what’s coming up next. The Heralds encourage involvement from the entire family, not just the singers on the risers. All family and friends of the Heralds are invited and encouraged to join us! The Tampa HERALD Page 13 April 2015 From the Groupanizer by Dave Roberts, President, Tenor Guy As Chapter and Chorus members, we benefit from the hard work of the Music Team – Tony, Drew and Chris, plus our talented section leaders and choreographers. We depend on them to continuously improve our performance. They depend on us, the members, to keep them aware of our availability and our progress on music. We owe them. Nothing is worse to see a ‘No Response’ for a calendar event. How can a ‘riser chart’ be prepared? Will Joe Kane have to sing on the left side or the right? Having a riser position is an honor with the Heralds which brings the responsibility for each member to keep his position current in the calendar. Another member responsibility is to keep his song status current. When new music is introduced, our website records when a member downloads the music Please read email sent by the chorus- it’s your lifeline to know what is going on! and that event is followed by the leadership. Why not keep the musical leadership aware of where you are with the song? Leaving the status as ‘Not Started’ tells the leadership nothing. Are you really ‘Not Started?’ Please take the time to keep your plans current. Get Your HoH Gear Here! April 2015 The Tampa HERALD Page 16 April 2015 Rehearsal Note Summary HoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes sent out by section leaders. Rehearsal Notes, March 16, 2015 by Russ Powell Outstanding Rehearsal with Several Guests: “We have Shane!” plus he brought a guest. Even our newest member, Joseph Hopkin, brought a different guest for the second week in a row. We need more new members like that who want to share the fun that we are having. Something is going around and it caught up with our Director. We are so very fortunate to have talented assistant directors who can pick up the reins and continue our uphill climb of achievement. Herald excellence was not abandoned once Drew injected the rehearsal, right from the beginning, with his challenge to always give 100%, to always get better, to produce the sound we know how to produce, to focus and be attentive to the guys up front so that we can continue to make more progress and move forward. After Drew’s admonishment, it became a night to remember as our sound production noticeably improved with rapid-fire show prep and choreo run-throughs. Thanks to Drew, Chris and Ralph for being the guys up front as we all wish Tony a quick recovery and return to the helm. Assistant Directors: Assistant directors are bound to be different and not wave their arms the same way as Tony. That is all the more reason to be attentive, show respect and discipline as you watch for cut-offs, pick-ups, starts and stops and the special cues that are given to perform the song. Getting used to other directors is a skill set that we all need to develop so that we can adapt quickly to these differences for a successful response to the give and take of artistic expression. The Look of the Sound: “Eyes Medley” visual enhancement the choreo is not so much choreo as the look of the sound or a visual representation of the song. Drew reviewed Saturday’s presentation of the “Eyes Medley” visual package and worked several run-throughs. You will remember this visual representation of the song if you go over it immediately in the next day or two. Review the video of last night, plus the Saturday combined-rehearsal video which is now available thanks to Brian Wunderlin’s efforts. Show Opener: Need a lot of home reps on the choreo to beef up our confidence. This is critical. Home review on “I’m on my way.” Don’t let the sun go down without a couple choreo runthroughs each day. We will be performing the show opener complete with choreo on Tuesday, March 24 (next week). Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club, Hernando County: Tuesday March 24 with chorus call, 5:30 p.m. Uniform is purple vest, tie, no jacket first half. Second half, add jacket with purple pocket square. Special guests: “Humdingers” and “Song Daddy.” Home Review: Entire show package (same as Dunedin show); quartets for “God Bless The USA;” many choreo run-throughs of show opener. Learn visual for “Eyes Medley.” ___________________________ Rehearsal Notes, April 6, 2015 by Russ Powell Excellent rehearsal with lots of enthusiasm as we ramp up for competition weekend. Several guests in attendance. Congratulations to David DeSorcy, our newest member, and great addition to the Tenor Section. Thanks to Ralph and Drew for choreo run-throughs. Our individual choreo mirror-time is definitely paying off. Weekend schedule begins with quartet competition at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Be there to cheer on and support our quartets: “Kickstart” (Chris Kline and Christian Espinosa), “Living Fossils” (Joe Kane), “4 Sharps” (Rich Casanzio), “Equinox” and “Main Street.” Don’t forget to cheer loud and long and don’t forget to ... have FUN!!!! Music set -- lists for this weekend: Competition set: “First Hello, Last Goodbye” - “Eyes Medley” Bow-out set: “Strike Up the Band” - “Believe” - “I’m On My Way” If we win set: “Tonight,Tonight” - “Slow Boat to China” “Smile” Afterglow set: All the above; plus, “ Lord Bless You and Keep You” Assemble in Capri Room after the call-off for the quarter finals (Continued on next page) The Tampa HERALD Page 17 April 2015 (Continued from previous page) Rehearsal Note Summary on Friday night. Reassemble at 8:30 a.m. -10 a.m. Saturday in Capri Room. Casual dress. Reassemble in formal dress with purple tie at 11:20 a.m. in Capri Room for beginning of rotation. Bring gold tie also. Artistic expression in ‘First Hello’: The stage is a “conversation room” with colloquial expressions making emotional connection to the audience. “Good ‘n true,” not “good and true.” Connect with that person in the audience. The front end sets the tone. Set the emotional level at the beginning. “Pal” is a loving friend, a buddy, a loved one, a darling companion. “Pal” needs more body, more emotional warmth. Release more emotion, more confidence. Singing too safe, too timid. Need to release ourselves with more emotional strength. More air will help sustain the note and provide emotional confidence. Need more confident emotion that is full of life. Be more in command. “Eyes Medley”: Accelerate the tag on eyes for bottom three parts on tenor post. Overall ownership of the delivery. Try less and BE more. We have what we have for now. Dynamics: Don’t let taking a breath affect the dynamic level. Let the music and lyrical ebb and flow determine dynamic level. “Eyes Medley:” Tony usually doesn’t change the dynamic level after a breath as in the passage, “great big beautiful eyes, (breath) baby you never ever....”. Keep “baby” full with a physical acknowledgement, then bring back the level. Next week: Work on Annual Show material: “Drunken Sailor,” “I’m On My Way,” “Twilight Time.” New song on the docket: “If There’s Anybody Here From Out of Town “ -- with a twist (VLQ on patter). The Tampa HERALD Page 18 April 2015 ODD TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2015 Submitted by Joe McCarthy, Lead I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, but I don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there. © Alphaspirit | Dreamstime.com - A Beautiful World Photo Submitted by Larry Clapp, Lead I hated being in Tense. Everyone there was wound pretty tightly; there were a lot of arguments. Trouble! Oh! Don’t get me started. Yes, I’ve been in Trouble before, and it’s an awful, awful place. Everyone yells at you there. My favorite place to be has kind of a funny name: Myo Nlytel. There’s a permanent amusement park there, with a teacup ride, which I really enjoy, ‘cause of the privacy and solitude. Yes, in Myo Nlytel Whirled no one and nothing can bother me. The Tampa HERALD Page 21 FRIENDS OF THE HERALDS The "Friends of the Heralds" program was instituted to provide financial support to the Heralds to sustain the significant growth we have experienced in the last three years. With the return of Tony De Rosa as our director, we have more than doubled our numbers on the risers; and more significantly, we are producing a better musical and entertainment experience for our audiences. Our shows are routinely sold , and for the first time in a long while, we will be competing on the International Chorus Competition stage, and, we are having fun. Several years ago, it became apparent that the customary sources of revenue from ticket sales, performance fees, dues, and grants would not sufficiently cover our financial needs. Accordingly, we created an opportunity for those of us on the risers as well as our friends, families, audience members and other fans of barbershop to reach in their pockets to assist us on our musical journey. Thus, the "Friends of the Heralds" was born. Not only has it helped us pay our bills, but recently FOH raised the money to purchase a new set of risers.
