Our family also has a strong commitment to mission outside the walls of our church community. For sixteen years our family has walked with thousands of other families and friends whose lives been impacted by autism. On Sunday, June 14th, we will be participating in an "outside service" at Schenley Park with Walk Now For Autism Speaks. Our son Peter has always been our source of motivation to help those who struggle with the challenges of autism. He continues to inspire hope and awareness to others in our community. Last November, he was among a number of individuals featured in the "Chef's Create" fundraising event. His personality helped inspire a chef to create a unique dessert in his honor. Recently, a local fitness club he attends wrote a feature article on their blog about his Peter with his dad Tim at a local fitness club participation there. (You can read the article “Success Story: Tim & Peter Gaus” at http:// www.clubjuliantoday.com/training-tips/entry/success-story-tim-peter-gaus) As a St. Anthony's post-secondary student at Duquesne University, he is learning skills from various work sites and experiences in the community environment. Being an active member of the Best Buddies organization, he has the opportunity to socialize with others on and off the school campus. Peter also continues to serve others regularly at Pleasant Valley Shelter. Though his life will continue to have numerous challenges, we have hope that he will receive the help and resources necessary to have a full and productive life. Autism Speaks, gives hope to families who struggle with autism. As an autism science and advocacy organization, their mission is to fund research into the causes, prevention, treatment and a cure. For more information visit www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/pittsburgh. You can be a part of the success by making a tax deductible donation to Autism Speaks or joining our team, "Peter's Platoon". We have a webpage established for our team to accept online donations at http:// www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp? ievent=1128604&team=6343822 or send a check to us at:330 Hillcrest Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15237. We have continually been overwhelmed and grateful for the generous support of family and friends. Your support through the years encourages us to continue our mission. Our sincere thanks, Tim, Judy, Ellen and Peter 3 Hiland World Vision Day Hiland is volunteering at the World Vision Gifts-in-Kind Distribution Center in Sewickley on Saturday, May 16th from 9 AM – Noon. Clearances Needed for Volunteers with Children and Youth PLEASE NOTE: ALL VOLUNTEERS who work with youth and children’s ministries events such as work camps, VBS, afterschool programs, or youth fun days will need to provide updated clearances. Questions can be directed to Chad Johnson, Linda Davis or the CE committee. How do changes to PA’s Child Abuse Laws effect us here at Hiland? As of January 1, 2015, Pennsylvania significantly broadened the scope of several provisions of its child abuse statues in ways that will impact church staff and volunteers who have contact with children. Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse The first important change relevant to churches is the addition of clergy, staff, and volunteers who regularly work with children to those who must report suspected child abuse under penalty of law. Reports must be made directly by the person who suspects that abuse has occurred. Reports may be made electronically at http:// www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home or by calling 1 -800-932-0313. If a report is made by telephone, the reporter must file an electronic or written report within 48 hours of making the oral report. Background Checks and Clearances The statute also broadened mandatory background check and clearance requirements previously applicable only to employees to adult volunteers as well. Adult Volunteers and employees aged 14 and older who are responsible for the welfare of a child or who have “direct contact” with children, defined as “the care, supervision, guidance or control of children or routine interaction with children” are required to submit: 1. PA State Police Criminal History Record Information (online at https://epatch.state.pa.us/ Home.jsp) 2. PA Child Abuse History Clearance (online at https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS) 3. Federal Criminal History Background Check (with submission of fingerprints) FBI checks and fingerprinting are required for employees only—volunteers won’t need to obtain this clearance. Detailed information on how to obtain clearances, including cost and acceptable forms of payment, is available on the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services website at http://www.dhs.state.pa.us/ findaform/childabusehistoryclearanceforms/index.htm. These clearances must be updated every three years. There is a phase-in provision allowing until July 1, 2015 to make volunteer clearances current. 4 ...to serve Christ and share His love.
