Spring Session A: Transitions
This workshop is designed to introduce new teachers to
the concept of various types of transitions in the
preschool environment, as well as to refresh
experienced teachers with new transition strategies and
ideas. Attendees will learn how to use these strategies
to create smooth, seamless transitions during an entire
day in the classroom, and how to help students and
families transition into a new classroom with new
teachers at the start of a new school year.
Presented by Janina Admana, Lead Teacher, George
Mason University Child Development Center, Location:
Johnson Center, Room A, Third Floor
Spring Session C: The Role of Positive
Teacher-Child Relationships in Facilitating
Success in the Preschool Classroom
It is widely understood that successful and engaging
preschool programs begin with a well-organized
classroom where teachers incorporate developmentally
appropriate practices. Equally important for facilitating
learning are preschool classrooms that provide
numerous opportunities for children to engage in
positive social interactions with their peers and to
develop close relationships with teachers. Young
children who develop secure relationships with their
teachers tend to feel more confident and experience
more academic success than other children. Positive
teacher-child interactions and relationships in the
preschool years are also associated with teachers’ use
of appropriate behavioral management strategies and
promote academic gains for children into the elementary
school years and beyond. This workshop will focus on
providing focused feedback and support to encourage
high-quality teacher-child interactions and relationships
in the preschool classroom. Participants will have the
opportunity to analyze and reflect on their own teaching
practices and will leave with specific and individually
focused strategies for improvement.
Presented by Yolanda Kee, MEd, and Pamela W. Garner,
PhD, George Mason University, Location: Johnson
Center, Room C, Third Floor.
Spring Session, Room E: Look, Listen,
Engage: Active Supervision for Infants
and Toddlers
Learn active supervision strategies for creating safe
environments and curbing challenging behaviors for
infants and toddlers.
Presented by Helen Webster and Julie Renne, Virginia
Infant & Toddler Specialist Network, Location: Johnson
Center, Room E, Third Floor
Spring Session F: Counting and Sorting
and Measuring! Oh My!
Early childhood educators need to understand the
position statements on this subject (NAEYC and NCTM)
and incorporate specifics of the statement into their
daily lesson plans. We will look at how math is all
around us and is the one “universal” language in our
world. Attendees will examine how they feel about
math—then experience activities that don’t require
fancy manipulatives!
Presented by LuAnn A. Carrig, Location: Johnson
Center, Room F, Third Floor
