Fortnight for Freedom June 21st—July 4th The U.S. bishops have called for a two-week period of prayer and action to address many current challenges to religious liberty. This year, the theme is Fortnight for freedom: Freedom to bear witness, stemming from the Gospel message that Jesus came to the world to bear witness to the truth. Educational materials and a series of examples of current threats to religious liberty are available at www.fortnight4freedom.org. WHAT FREEDOMS ARE WE PRAYING TO PROTECT? The freedom to love, believe, hope, worship, serve in charity, care for the suffering, comfort the sick, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, proclaim the Gospel, walk in chastity, live in peace, work in good conscience, stand in solidarity seek justice, reject sin, reject coercion, reject falsehood reject evil temptations and to reject injustice. (Taken from the Litany for Liberty for use during the Fortnight for Freedom, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.) Copies of the Litany for Liberty are available in the Gathering Area by the statue of Mary and the American Flag. Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel after the 11:00am Sunday Mass Holy Hour from 3:00pm–4:00pm. Mindy Pfaff Full-time Staff Member for Youth and Parish Volunteers After consultation with the Parish Council and the Finance Committee we will be bringing Mindy Pfaff on full-time to our staff. Mindy will be responsible for Youth & Volunteer Ministries. Mindy has been a part-time employee of Immaculate Conception as a Youth Minister for six years and will begin her full-time responsibilities on August 1, 2015. Along with Youth Ministries she will help to invite and coordinate volunteers who are so vital to our parish ministries. THE WOUNDED HEALERS With all its imperfections, sins, blemishes, and warts, the Church of Jesus Christ is the intended healer of the world’s wounds. Christians are called to be compassionate, wounded healers. Perhaps, Henri Nouwen, the Roman Catholic theologian, has said this better than anyone else. The author of many books, Nouwen speaks of Christians as "wounded healers" who have compassion. Compassion is not pity. Pity lets us stay at a distance. It is condescending. Compassion is not sympathy. Sympathy is for superiors over inferiors. Compassion is not charity. Charity is for the rich to continue in their status over the poor. Compassion is born of God. It means entering into the other person’s problems. It means taking on the burdens of the other. It means standing in the other person’s shoes. It is the opposite of professionalism. It is the humanizing way to deal with people. "Just as bread without love can bring war instead of peace, professionalism without compassion will turn forgiveness into a gimmick." Anyone going into their sophomore year of high school and later, we will have a Parents and Confirmation Candidate meeting on Sunday, June 28th at noon (after the 11:00am Mass). If, however, you can't make it to this meeting, we will also have one on Monday evening, June 29th, 6:30pm, in Community Room A. You will need to attend ONE of these meetings, not BOTH. It is VERY IMPORTANT to attend one of these meetings if you are interested in being Confirmed. We will be discussing our Confirmation Program and the requirements for next year. These will be new requirements, since we will be using a new program for Confirmation this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mindy Pfaff, at (417) 496-0769 (call or text) OR by email: [email protected] A NOTE OF THANKS FROM BISHOP JOHNSTON Dear Friends in Christ, I am truly grateful for the many expressions of love and kindness surrounding the recent celebration of my 25th anniversary as a priest. The thoughtful support and congratulations through cards, prayer, spiritual bouquets, among other things, are true gifts which I will always cherish. Thank you for joining me in thanking God for the gift of priesthood to the Church. Continue to pray for me, our priests and seminarians, and for an abundance of priestly vocations from our diocese-"ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38). May God continue to bless you!
