Memories that we develop and hold onto construct our life story. The power of choice and the unprecedented fact of change influence our every experience.... some things we can control and others we just have to accept. Knowing the difference is perhaps where accumulated experience turns into wisdom, a gift that can be found in the latter years of life. Life is living ritual. Some rituals are necessarily daily like personal hygiene practices as well as the involvement in activities such as work, house cleaning and food management that ensure our human existence... some are weekly rituals like ‘bin night’, monthly events, seasonal activities and others come annually. Creating InJoy Magazine is a bimonthly ritual for me... and after twenty-six experiences I am beginning to find the rhythm and the flow amongst all the unknowns. Often I have commented that gratitude is a way of being in joy, and in this bipolar reality... where night and day, good and bad, man and woman create the balance for existence... there are always two sides to the story and we ‘re free to choose the brighter side of life, no matter what it is. Time is not only dictated by the clock... it is still dictated by nature and the seasons, by the change of day to night, by the rhythm of your blood if you are a woman, and the rhythm of your moods if you are a human. Time can also be dictated by the ritual you infuse your living experience with. I begin by sending my gratitude to EVERYTHING when my feet first touch the ground, as I rise up again for yet another day.. How do you influence your life with ritual? What are the daily, weekly, cyclic habits that serve your soul and inspire your true being to shine... or have you forgotten and become a human doing in a world controlled by the tick and the tock and technology? I love sipping warm water and lemon juice as the sun shines through the trees still moist from the early morning dew... and when this light catches the reflection of water drops off a spider’s web in my garden, I remember that I am here in heaven on earth... I am a perfect and positive pulse, a conduit of consciousness that serves the natural world... and it is this simple ritual that serves me well. Life is to be lived, with all the ups and the downs, the times when we are turned inside out or when the outside touches our inner landscape so deeply we feel it too much... Life is often described as a school and many do say... the teacher comes when the student is ready. Nature is our greatest teacher and always present, we just need to be aware and willing to take some time to the bathe in the silence that abounds us and immerse our attention in the nature that surrounds us... It responds to the needs of the community and affirms and promotes the right to communication.” Gayle Cue, Founding Member of Bay FM In the 1980s, a group of locals interested in establishing a community radio station for the Byron Shire worked passionately to fine tune their vision into a reality. Opening of Bay FM office at Epicentre September 1990 Bay FM would become a reality only if it received strong community support. In January 1988, a public meeting was attended by many residents to gather support for a station that would represent an independent community voice. The goal of Bay FM was to enable the community to own, operate and control their own broadcasting service that represented a diversity of programming choices, a variety of viewpoints and to generate local content. Paul Le Bars at Bay FM’s first test broadcast Once a committee was formed, Bay FM had to get on with the enormous task of actually setting up a radio station. The first step was to set up a transmitter to enable test broadcasts and to build a station at a price tag of $70,000. In March 1988 during the Australian Pacific Festival, Bay FM ran its first fundraising event called the ‘Mock’ radio station. Over 10 days Bay FM hit the airwaves from a caravan in Railway Park where 30 broadcasters provided entertainment and information for festival goers. Paul Le Bars: president of Bay FM 1991 (took over from Nancy Jo Falcone) Two years later on Sunday April 1st 1990, Bay FM went live with the first test transmissions operating over a week from five different locations. At the same time, the local Brunswick Byron Echo ran a listener survey to 10,000 residents, to ask for feedback on the reception quality which helped in selecting the optimum transmitter site. Mr John Gable, Bay FM Committee Member, remarked in September 1990, “We carried out the first of a series of test transmissions in April and have had great support….the main complaint we received is that people can’t yet find us on the dial.” Fast forward 25 years to Bay FM 99.9 This award winning community radio station has come a long way from transmitting inside a van to broadcasting in a shack at the old Community Centre on Butler Street, Byron Bay. Today Bay FM transmits from a transmitter tower at St. Helena reaching as far as Ballina, Lismore and Murwillimbah. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day from the Community Centre in Johnson Street, Byron Bay - a site built entirely on volunteer power. Bay FM fundraiser with Tjintana (date unknown: Bay FM did a lot of fundraising to get the station on air) 2 120 volunteers and 7 dedicated contractors give their time to deliver an independent local voice in a media landscape that is ruled by profit, commercialism and music charts. 26 april/may 2015 injoy injoy injoy injoy injoy injoy edition • “The reality is that Bay FM is operating on outdated transmission equipment”, says Rudiger Wasser, Bay FM’s Facilities Manager. “In the last 25 years we have seen a technological revolution, yet we still have equipment up at the tower that is as old as the Station. This equipment operates 24 hours a day in salty sea air conditions. There is an urgent need to replace the gear if Bay FM is to continue broadcasting great sound quality to our listeners.” The other reality is that Bay FM does not receive government funding. The station relies entirely on dollars from the community as a non-commercial and not for profit organisation. Bay FM’s future is exciting Bay FM is embracing new developments in digital broadcasting technology enabling listeners to tune in all over the world. However, Bay FM has not lost sight of why it is still here after a quarter century. Serving community first is paramount with local and up to date information covering weather and State Emergency Service updates. Bay FM continues to support the music and arts industry and community groups in the Northern Rivers on air and via outside broadcasts from our own home grown festivals including Bluesfest, Mullum Music Festival, The Writers Festival, and important local events such as Lock the Gate Alliance at Lismore. Last day of Test Transmission at Lighthouse on Saturday 7th April 1990 The Show MUST go on.... Support ‘Watts Up! Fundraiser’... For our local radio station to go on for another 25 years, Bay FM must raise $25,000 to purchase new equipment for the transmitter site at St Helena. During the month of April, the community can “Buy a Watt” from as little as $5. The community can buy as many Watts as they wish to help Bay FM reach its goal of 5,000 Watts. So… if one thousand locals ‘purchase’ a donation of 5 watts each (that’s only $25), Bay FM would quickly reach its target. The community can “Buy a Watt” at bayfm.org or call the Station (02) 6680 7999 or visit the Station, upstairs in the Byron Community Centre. St. Helena Tower & transmitter sign on shed at tower All donations are tax deductible. Supporters of Bay FM can keep up to date with how many Watt’s the community buys and check out or post classic photos of Byron Bay and Bay FM 25 years ago at Bay FM’s Facebook page. injoy 26 april/may 2015injoy injoy injoy injoy injoy edition • 3 Turmeric Golden Milk An Ancient Drink That Will Change Your Life . . . This Ayurvedic recipe uses two wonderful spices - turmeric and black pepper - and combines them into a healthy and delicious drink that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Turmeric originates from India where it’s been used for centuries in cooking, health care and as a beauty product. Its active ingredient is called curcumin. When curcumin is combined with black pepper its bioavailability significantly increases. Health Benefits of Golden Milk... It’s an antiseptic and an analgesic so it helps with pain relief. Detoxes the liver and helps to purify the blood. Great for joint problems, osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis. It offers a general immunity boost and provides you with a good dose of antioxidants. Allow the mixture to cool down and then place it in a (preferably) glass container with an airtight lid. The paste will keep in the fridge for 2 to 3 weeks. After that it develops a metallic taste so you should avoid consuming it. Some people take this paste directly without making it into a milk concoction. It’s good for pain relief. For severe pai, it’s recommended to take half to 1 teaspoon of turmeric paste a day. The pain should subside after 3 to 4 days (also try this anti-inflammatory and pain relief ginger turmeric tea). Golden Milk: 1/4 teaspoon (or a little more if you can tolerate the taste) of turmeric paste 1 cup almond milk (you can also use organic cow’s milk or other milk substitutes such as hemp milk, coconut milk, rice milk or oat milk) The RECIPE is divided into two parts. First, we’ll look at how to make the turmeric paste. Then we’ll use the paste to make the health-promoting golden milk. 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (you can also use sesame oil or sweet almond oil) - get unrefined, cold pressed oil Turmeric Paste: Put milk and turmeric paste in a pot and cook on medium heat. Stir constantly and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. When the drink cools down add honey and oil(s). The oil supplies you with healthy fats and further increases turmeric absorption. It helps with joint lubrication and promotes cellular function. 1/2 cup of clean water 1/4 cup of turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper Put the pan with water in it on a medium heat setting. Add turmeric and pepper and stir well so you create a smooth paste. It takes about 7 to 9 minutes to get the paste properly cooked. If it becomes too dry you can add some more water. Turmeric has a very strong pigment so protect your clothes in case it bubbles out. ESSENTIAL 5 • • • • • 4 Some honey The drink has a nice golden colour, hence its name. Wash with the right suds It’s true that dishwashing detergent can get your car clean and shiny, but leave it for the dishes. Yes, it removes dirt, grease and old wax but it also strips any protective wax coatings, exposing the vehicle to possible nicks, scratches and stains, as well as shortening the life of the paint. Instead use a cleaner made for vehicles. 2. No direct sunlight When washing your car, park it in a shaded area. If the surface is too hot the soap suds will dry too quickly leaving soapy splotches and deposit stains. 3. Hose it off Always pre-soak your car to remove, loosen and soften heavy contaminants first. local. Source of image... fb page - Veterinaria 4. Wash one section at a time Start at the roof of the car and wash the car by sections: hood, rear, upper sections of side, and then lastly the lower areas. After the section is washed, rinse it off with a hose. This prevents the soap drying on the paint and potentially staining it. 5. Start and end with clean sponge and bucket of soap Hose off your sponge or mitt before resoaping in the bucket. You want to keep your cleaning instruments clean but most importantly if there’s any debris stuck on the mitt it could scratch or damage the car. 6. Avoid air drying Air-drying might seem a quick and easy solution but it can leave watermarks or water spots on the exterior. Use a chamois or a soft terry cloth to dry the car. 7. Clean the inside from the top Many people begin by shampooing the carpet but it will just get dirty again when you clean the upper surfaces. Start at the top and work your way down and vacuum the dust and dirt as you go. 8. Protect paint with wax Wax your car to protect the paint job on the car. It will wear off over a few months, but in that time it will also absorb stains and small scratches before they ruin the paint. There are many different type of waxes on the market but all do the same job. Source : www.oversixty.com.au Life’s too short to wake up with regrets. Many have been conditioned by religion and the cultural collective to see the darken world of the night as something to be feared and avoided. Even in the New Age circles there is a distinct pull towards the ‘light practices’ and a need to be more focused on the light than the dark. The dark is the mother, the intuitive feminine. Why have so many people forgotten that? If not embraced this can tend to increase the shadow world from within more and more because it is not being acknowledged as acceptable. Acknowledging the dark is not about turning away from the light at all, it’s about embracing the gifts and insights of both. Archetypically the father is the light (conscious) and the mother is the dark (unconscious). Shamanism embraces the dark and the unseen and navigates it rather than slamming the door shut saying ‘Go back from whence you came’. (Old biblical exorcism quote) Shamanism seeks to see the beauty and the gifts within the unconscious and to actively bring more light (consciousness) to them. Much like how the full sister moon brightens everything at night so you are more able to see where you’re going naturally. When you stand face to face with your inner darkness there is an opportunity for liberation and insight. People who live in the artic survive through days of darkness and days of only light. Many say it is the never ending days of light that tend to send people mad, not the darkness. Darkness is an opportunity to turn within and turning within is very important if we as a global community are going to grow in consciousness. The darkness offers the opportunity to learn how to navigate within the feminine aspects of our soul. The unknown (darkness) can be scary but when we bring the moonlight’s reflection to it, it can offer such profound and powerful teachings beyond judgment and fear. An Exercise . . . Sit in a comfortable position. Put your left hand on your solar plexus and your right hand on your belly. Slow down your breathing; 5 counts in and 10 counts out. Call on all your guardians and guides/totems to be with you or right behind you. Ask for what you fear to come forward. Trust in what you see, feel or experience Ask it what has it come to teach you. Trust in the first thing that pops into your mind... Then write it down (don’t judge it). Thank the energy for its teaching. Thank your kin and burn some sage in a figure eight pattern. Befriend rather than fight. You will learn so much more. Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again……. Praise, flattery, exaggerated manners and fine, high-sounding words were no part of Lakota politeness. Excessive manners were put down as insincere, and the constant talker was considered rude and thoughtless. Conversation was never begun at once, or in a hurried manner. This concept of life and its relations was humanising and gave to the Lakota an abiding love. It filled his being with the joy and mystery of living; it gave him reverence for all life; it made a place for all things in the scheme of existence with equal importance to all. It was good for the skin to touch the earth, and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth… the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of propping himself up and away from its life giving forces. For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly. He can see more clearly into the mysteries of life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him. Children were taught that true politeness was to be defined in actions rather than in words. They were never allowed to pass between the fire and the older person or a visitor, to speak while others were speaking, or to make fun of a crippled or disfigured person. If a child thoughtlessly tried to do so, a parent, in a quiet voice, Everything was possessed of personality, only differing from immediately set him right. us in form. Lahood In a nut shell Relational Spirituality seeks intersubjective communion with Being and Beings ... human or non-human. It is based on the principle that nature or creation is divine immanence ... a purposeful manifestation of indefinable and unknowable spirit. It is the quality of our relationship with the world-as-revelation that reveals the world as a trans-personal one of great depth, beauty and majesty. Sensual experience: sight, hearing, touch, aroma, taste are the figures of a divine ground. Co-inquiry is shorthand for “collaborative transpersonal action research into the realm of the between” ... this is the core tool of relational spirituality. It combines mindfulness-in-action with others, peer and contributory spirituality, respectful dialogue, the principle of therapeutic democracy and the spiritual practice of co-decision making. Co-inquiry enacts a paradigm in which the proper place of enlightenment is deemed to be between people rather than a subjective ‘inner event’. Co-inquiry is the communal skill of co-creating a unique spiritual event with others so-engaged by attending to the wellness of the between. The Path of Beauty—is simply the poetic version of the more theoretical relational spirituality. It is a long-term co-inquiry that walks with care and attention between the following two distressed poles. 1) The repressive, closed, controlling, protecting selfprocess that objectifies the world and treats persons and the world as something to manipulate, have control over and capitalise on. As personhood develops we realise our vulnerability through wounding and socialisation and move to repress this vulnerable self. 8 Here we do not meet the world in authentic encounters rather we move to protect ourselves by controlling the situation. This form of self-enclosure (everyday narcissism) is in no-way truly open to contacting the Other. It is busy slipping out of the immediate present experience by actualising (or advertising) a self-image. But actualising a self-image is not the same as actualising an authentic self-in-open-relation to Being and Beings. 2) We also steer clear of the selfabandonment found in some approaches to spiritual ‘unity’ found in some Christian, Hindu and Buddhist doctrines. It can be an attempt to escape our vulnerability by a triumphant merging with the divine, by denying personhood and human needs and becoming identified with a superior One-withouta-second. We regress to the primordial ‘uncreate’ in an attempt to dodge our embodiment and our erotic relationship with Being and Beings. Driven by the realisation of our vulnerability in the face of death we remove our selves through defensive spirituality. The result of subjectifying the cosmos is that it removes relationship from the world and creates an inflated self divorced from real relating. It is yet another sophisticated narcissistic strategy. The Path of Beauty, practiced over time, can release us from both poles—the repressive/controller and the regressive/unifier. Our humanity is not to be cast aside because the One is not complete without us and our human-divine experience. The human body is recollected as the divine locus of universal consciousness. Dr G.A. Many people are now awakening to the concept that we are not humans having spiritual experiences, but we are in essence spirit beings having a human experience. Various notable people have been quoted as saying “You are not a body that has a soul—you are a soul that has a body”. As a scientist and former skeptic, I didn’t come to this conclusion easily myself, but now the awareness of soul is such an integral part of how I live my life—and how I see the world—how I navigated the world without this awareness is becoming a distant memory. Although our body is temporary—our soul is eternal and immortal. As souls we agree to incarnate as a human for particular lessons and experiences that this physical form offers. By many accounts, Earth is one of the most challenging places to live in the Universe. Earth is a three-dimensional experience, and as such the energy here is incredibly dense or ‘heavy’ relative to our natural state as spirit. Life on Earth is not for the faint-hearted! One of my favourite teachers, channeller Lee Harris refers to Earth as “the crazy planet”. Another much loved teacher of mine, Dolores Cannon found that clients under regression hypnosis often reported that Earth is one of only a few places left in the Universe where the human inhabitants still play out violence and destruction. been happening since March 2012 occurred on the 16/17th of March 2015, and we are being asked to become a living embodiment of what we have awakened to over the last two and a half years. The change you wish to see in the world begins from within but must at some point be reflected outwards in order for us to actually see that change. Many of us who are more sensitive and peace-loving by nature can at times feel overwhelmed by the fear and suffering on the planet. Since increasing sensitivity goes hand-in-hand with awakening to our true nature as loving spirit beings, the process of awakening can create acute feelings of isolation and aloneness. I have become very accustomed to having music inspire me as I cook and I realise when I am working away on retreat after retreat I have very little music to listen to, and I really feel the difference. Sometimes the beauties who work with me put their music on and sometimes it serves and at others it is a bit too frantic while I cook, so I am looking for more music suggestions that will suit my style of cooking. What tunes do you like to put on when you are cooking? Some of the suggestions posted on my blog may also inspire you too... My suggestion is ‘Sweet Surrender’ a CD by a wonderful local musician - Kunda Nettlebeck. I usually choose to put this on when I am making something light and upbeat. Other wonderful suggestions since posting my blog post have included … the top 40 and any nostalgic music from the past … and other ranged from Italian Opera to Pink Floyd. Any type of passionate music including VaPensiero by Nambuco was recommended and my beloved cousin who I haven’t seen for almost three decades informed me she almost chopped her finger off dancing and cooking to Two Tribes Go To War. Others posted Blondie and Frank Sinatra and our home-grown Love Is In The Air by John Paul Young … Tribal music … Rhythm and Blues and anything that makes you feel sultry and sexy (yes please, ooh la la). Much devotional music was also recommended, as was Miles Davies … and who remembers Dr Hook. MC Yogi got a mention and I must say this is a favourite in the Veet’s Cuisine kitchen, especially Elephant Power when we are trying to work our way through a massive pile of dishes. Country Music even got acknowledged, which took me back to my school holidays when I used to put my dad’s Dolly Parton record on and make my lunch singing away to ‘Jolene.’ Go to my blog page to see more… or add your favourite music too… please leave your answers and suggestions in the comments… Here is the link - http://www.veetscuisine.com.au/i-needyour-help-what-music-do-you-listen-to-in-the-kitchen Authentic Indian Cuisine that is Gluten-Free Friendly and Vegan Friendly. For each of us each day this is different depending on where we are at in the moment and what is needed. The yoni needs patience, tenderness, sensitivity and an attitude of openness to what ever arises. I see a lot of women struggle with being present, listening and responding to the body. This is where the coming together regularly offers a lot of support, because you can feel how other women get in touch with themselves and it is inspiring and encouraging just being in the space together. As the reclamation begins, stories of denial, pain, rage, repression societal projections of being dirty, shameful, fearful or even disgust can be deeply identified with, and these energies cause condensing in the cell tissues along with numbness, painful sex, painful menstruation and inflexibility. Yoni yoga is a healing of all of what it is to be a woman... There is no nudity, genital touch or stimulation required. The process is guided through our connection with the breath, our internal awareness and sensitivity to our subtle energy in the body. Orgasmic bliss is our life force energy, they are one and the same. Allowing this energy to move through the body has so many healing benefits and as a result the tension falls away effortlessly, relaxation just happens. This year is a special year as I am offering a 9-month initiation journey for women that will include a Yoni Yoga Teacher Training. Living the Divine Masculine - How to cultivate ability to heal the Feminine? by Shantam Nityama A disciple of Osho since 1980, Shantam Nityama has pioneered his own revolutionary form of bodywork designed to take men and women on a journey from sex to superconsciousness, while healing at the deepest levels. How do you teach men to become distinguished lovers and to be able to assist women in their healing? There are a number of things that I communicate to men when I begin to work with them. The first thing is to encourage them to drop all fantasies. I help them to see that they need to be authentic when they are communing with a woman and that they need to cultivate the ability in themselves to stalk and feel her energy. Meaning anytime a man needs to have a fantasy about some naked woman, a fantasy about some movie star, or a fantasy about some other woman that he would like to be with, in order to be with the current woman, he has totally separated himself from this woman. Whatever he does with this particular woman will actually be injurious to her. It will not be helpful to her as far as her restoring herself back to wholeness. The other thing that is very important is bringing men to understand that when they are touching a woman they are touching her either as a way of promoting her well being or they are adding insult to previous injury. And the way for them to be clear that they are adding something through their touch that is helpful to her is to make sure that whenever they touch a woman with any part of themselves, whether it be their hand, their arm, or whatever, that they become a part of what they are touching and all of their consciousness is in the slightest of touches. For example when touching with the hand, the man must be conscious to use this experience as a means of making sure that he is totally piercing her with his consciousness through the hand, and being totally present in the hand. He wants to feel, sense and intuit the woman’s communication Every Day 10 minute Exercise . . . 1... Lay down with left hand on the heart and the right hand on the womb. 2... Tune into the pulsing sensations in the heart, then the womb, then both simultaneously. Stay completely present with the pulsing sensations and allow everything else to fall away. 3... While doing this exercise it is important to let the breath flow out through the mouth with the jaw relaxed open. This is crucial in allowing the body to free itself from energies that are inhibiting bliss. 16 26 april/may 2015 injoy injoy injoy injoy injoy injoy edition • continued . . . back to the hand so that they know there is a resonance taking place that is moving equally between the two of them. Through these types of conscious interactions the man has the ability to start to follow the woman’s internal energy and be able to register, in his consciousness, the most minute movements and shifts within that woman’s body, within her field, within her consciousness, within her emotions, within all different aspects of her. Once a man has developed this capacity, then he also has the ability when he’s making love to her to know how to detect the slightest tension, a tightening inside of her womb, or whatever. He can detect whenever he touches on a place that is the least bit painful or that she’s apprehensive about opening, and then through that registry, he can in turn communicate with the woman and ask her to breathe her way into these places, see what they are about, and then jointly the two of them, once she has named it, can actively transmute whatever it is in order to start to restore her womb back to innocence. For details about Nityama’s availability in Australia contact: [email protected] or phone : 0409200167 “Heaven is Here -- you just have to know how to live it. And hell too is here, and you know perfectly well how to live it. It is only a question of changing your perspective, your approach towards life. The earth is beautiful. If you start living its beauty, enjoying its joys you are in paradise. If you condemn everything, then the same earth turns into a hell -- only for you. It depends on you where you live, it is a question of your own inner transformation. It is not a change of place, it is a change of inner space. Live joyously, guiltlessly, live totally. And then heaven is no more a metaphysical concept, it is your own experience.” OSHO www.osho.com Shakti Goddesses Some may wonder about the cultural cross-overs between Greco-Roman forms of the sacred feminine with both the Shakti goddesses of India and the asteroid goddesses in our astrology charts, so I thought I’d connect some. Lakshmi, goddess of spiritual and material abundance; Ceres/Demeter and Venus/Aphrodite Saraswati, goddess of learning, language, insight and sound; Pallas Athena, Iris Durga, warrior goddesses of inner strength, protection and power; Black Moon, Black Madonna, Lilith, Medusa Kali, goddess of death, birth and revolution; Black Moon, Persephone, Ereshkigal, Medusa Radha, goddess of romantic longing; Venus/Aphrodite and especially Psyche Sita, goddess of devotion and mystical submission; Moon and Juno/Hera Lalita, yogini goddess of erotic spirituality; Hygeia, Lilith and Medusa Bhuvaneshwari, goddess of infinite space and whose body is the world; Moon, Ceres Dhumavati, crone goddess and of letting go; Hekate, Persephone One of the great gifts of the original tantric traditions of India, the goddess traditions, is that they provide the spiritual technology to get directly in touch with the Shakti, the sacred power of each archetype, whatever her name, in the form of mantras, rituals, meditations and visualisations. Extract from article by Daniel Sowelu : www.sacredlawfirm.com.au facing the shadow In shamanic culture facing the shadow means confronting the issues pushed down and away from the light. Psychospiritual maturity is the ability to stand in the presence of yourself and see what traumas influence your behaviour. Jesso has faced his own shadow, and come out the other side. Join Jesso and experiential journalist Rak Razam as they talk about the use of psilocybin as a healing modality, and the counterpointing McKenna-flavored ‘Cosmic Mushroom’ paradigm. Is the psychological model for psilocybin more useful for global culture in need of spiritual healing? What about the reported ability of psilocybin as a language catalyst? Or for neurogenesis and improving interconnectivity in the brain? How does that affect language, syntax and symbolism and the physiological basis of our consciousness? If language comes from the necessity to convey information, is our language evolving to help map the realms entheogens take us to? Most of us have a preference for certain kinds of books that fall into multiple genres. We also have a style of reading eclectic, focused, serial, exacting, flitting, browsing. Whatever our approach it changes over time, representing healthy evolution. Can these preferences be related to the zodiac? Test it for yourself and see! ARIES : An independent reader. You like to browse for something that spontaneously lights your fire. Who cares what the critics think? This is all about your desires. No need to hold the thrills, chills and spills. Adventure and conflict a must. Action, SciFi, Romantic Thriller, War, Page Turners. TAURUS: A slower pace isn’t an issue as long as there is sensuality and pleasure. Woven into the pages is a true alpha hero and a powerful, high libido female. HEA is probably a must. Finds delight in Romance, Erotica, Memoir, Historical Fiction, Alternate History Fantasy. GEMINI: Must capture interest in the first sentence. No slow starts. Must also be intelligent, sharp and fresh. Bestsellers are excellent for conversations/social gatherings. Loves a good “whodunnit”, Medical or SF Romance, Urban Fantasy, Crimeprocedural, Self-Help, Literary Fiction. CANCER: Loves tales of the past, historical, classical, haute sensibilities - Jane Austin! But not afraid of the darker side of fiction. Must engage the emotions. Will tolerate almost anything as long as there is a non-contrived Cook Books, Vampire, Mystery, Paranormal. Of course Romance! LEO: It does matter what the critics are saying and you may use reviews to guide your choices but you’ll make up your own mind in the end! A focused reader with more traditional preferences... High Fantasy, Classical, Supernatural, Young Adult and Children’s Books, Hero’s Journey and Time Travel. VIRGO: Most likely has a To-Be-Read ist and sticks to it! You’re a serial reader who also makes a great reviewer. Non-Fiction can be as enjoyable as fiction, especially Self-Help or exploring your favorite research topic. SF, Dystopia, YA, Paranormal Romance, Magical Realism, Steam Punk! LIBRA: You love to read what your friends are reading. It’s as fun to discuss as it is to immerse in the pages. Prefer a certain level of refinement and sophistication. Not too hard core. HEA important. Chick Lit, Classical, Memoir, Romantic Suspense, Faery Tale, Space Opera, Trad Fantasy. SCORPIO: Here we have the sign that not only enjoys a trip to the underworld, it is required reading. A focused and eclectic reader, drawn to stories with extreme emotions and experiences. Horror, Gothic, Dark Fantasy, War, Urban Fantasy, Hard SF, SF Thriller, Erotica. SAGITTARIUS : The explorer into the unknown. Does like to keep up with trends and read current bestsellers (so, like Gemini, can discuss in social situations!) Not afraid of avant guarde. All forms of SF including Alt History, Zombies, Comic Fantasy, YA, Short Stories, Philosophy, Adventure. CAPRICORN: One of the most pragmatic and accomplishment oriented signs in the zodiac. Loves academic or business/ finances . . . but, there is a whole imaginative and creative side here too! Drawn to Historical Fantasy/Romance, Hard SF, Drama, History, Religious/Spiritual, Vampire. AQUARIUS : The most quirky and unpredictable of the signs. The read must be fast pace, full of twists and turns. You don’t want to see the end coming! Reads traditionally for knowledge, and non-traditionally for pleasure. New Weird Fiction, Slip Stream, Erotic Romance, SF and Fantasy Thriller. PISCES : This is the “everything, everywhere, all the time” reader who would probably list all genres known to human kind as a preference. Does love a good Magical Mystery Tour! Faery Tales and Classical Murder Mysteries, Romantic Mystery, ShapeShifter, SciFi Fantasy, Poetry, genre blenders. Do any of these ring true for you? I’d love to hear what your favorite genre is, and your sign in the zodiac. For example, I’m a Gemini and love Urban Fantasy!
