My Fair Lady is Just “Loverly” This Spring
“By George, she’s got it!” That may
be how Professor Henry Higgins exults Eliza’s success with “The Rain
in Spain” in SJCT’s spring musical,
My Fair Lady. But all of us will be
proclaiming “By George, we got it!”
after experiencing this beloved and
unforgettable play produced on the
Whittier stage for the first time.

Notes from the
Executive Director
Boy, do we have some great local and regional shows to crow
about this spring! San Juan Singers’
spring concert and Island Chordsmen’s Barbershop Bonanza get
bigger and better every year. I
love watching the much-deserved
pride that these singers take in
their product.
I’m really excited about My Fair
Lady. The rehearsal room is filled
with talent, teamwork and enthusiasm. Not to mention the great
music! Speaking of great music,
get your tickets now for Tacoma
Youth Symphony’s concert in late
May. It’s a truly inspiring experience.
Bill and Rita Ament are back with
Dance Happy this June after taking a year off for Bill’s surgery. A
year without Dance Happy is like
a year without sunshine! Producer
Patricia Kostek outdoes herself
with each Chamber Music San
Juans concert. You’d better be there
to see what she’ll do next!
Missoula Children’s Theatre is back
at the end of June and this is a
very good thing. Put this together
with Grisha Krivchenia and Robin
Lohrey’s recital for the roof fund
and Chris Carter’s battle of the
bands and we have a lot to look
forward to.

Still relevant. Still funny. More than

Franklin’s words, wit and wisdom

Hosted by Northwest history scholar,

American entertains, educates and motivates. Smith’s lifelong admiration of
Dr. Franklin, combined with a passion
for “hands-on history,” inspired this
illuminating “Chautauqua” (a firstperson live presentation of the life of
a famous person). Smith calls Dr.

frustrating and inspiring, traditional
and revolutionary…some would say
radical and rebellious…he is still our

These islands we call home are sometimes referred to as the “Jewels of the
Northwest.” Indeed, this is a special
and magical place, although too frequently we don’t take time to enjoy
the wonder of it all. In fact, I expect
many of us are guilty of taking it for
granted – the natural beauty, the peace
and tranquility, the dramatic vistas
– that we simply forget what drew us
here, and what keeps us here.
Similarly, I find that people often don’t
take time to enjoy the “jewel of the
islands” that is the San Juan Community Theatre. Perhaps we take it
for granted, too – but this Theatre is
a special and magical place in its own
right. In this regard, the Theatre is well
suited to its beautiful setting.
Within the Community Theatre
another kind of magic takes place
– which, in many ways, can be just
as beautiful, powerful, and unique as
our natural surroundings. Like our
response to an Orca surfacing in the
Straits, a live performance of talented
artists may allow us to find peace in a
tranquil and moving musical moment,
or be awed by a powerful, emotional
dramatic moment.
A tremendous variety of entertainment
opportunities are offered at the Theatre. There is a breadth and depth of
programming that – like the natural
environment around us – would be
a shame to miss. Sharing in a moment as an audience member at the
Theatre can be as memorable and
enjoyable as any experience available
in these Islands.
So become a part of live theater. It’s
here for the asking – take advantage
of it!

Keyboard Masterworks
Two of San Juan Island’s special musical talents join forces
to help raise money for San Juan Community Theatre’s
campaign to repair its 20-year-old roof.
On Friday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m., Grisha Krivchenia and Robin
Lohrey will share the great works of beloved composers,
including Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Schubert and Chopin,
during this special concert on the Whittier stage.
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Grisha Krivchenia
teaches music and philosophy at Spring Street International
School. He completed his training at Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied piano with Sedmara Rutstein and
composition with Lewis Nielson and Jeffrey Mumford.
Robin Lohrey is a junior at Spring Street International
School and has studied violin and piano since he was
sixyears old. In 2007 Robin lived abroad for a year with
his family in southern France studying instruments, improvisation, theory, and chamber music at the Conservatoire
de Musique in Avignon and performing in five concerts
with the Uzes Orchestra. Since 2008 Robin has continued
classical and jazz piano studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Founding singer-songwriters Ruth Moody (guitar, banjo,

Leon Redbone brings his iconic look,

The world was first introduced to
Leon in 1976, when he made his
network debut on Saturday Night Live,
showcasing his indelible version of
“Walkin’ Stick.” Throughout his 30+
year career, he has continued a love
affair with tunes from the turn-of-the[20th]century. Yet, he mixes in later
songs, with a musical repertoire that
can range among Bob Dylan’s “Living the Blues,” Jelly Roll Martin’s “I
Hate a Man Like You,” Eddy Arnold’s
“Bouquet of Roses” and the childhood
folk favorite “Polly Wolly Doodle.”
In addition to his live performances,
Leon was a favorite guest of Johnny
Carson, played a wise animated snowman opposite Will Ferrell in Elf (he
also sang in a duet of “Baby, it’s Cold
Outside” for the picture’s theme song)
and popularized the homespun beer
jingle, “This Bud’s for you.”

It’s not your typical “Battle of the Bands” when three
San Juan Island musical groups come together on Friday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. There’s no competition--it’s

Island native and 2008 Spring Street International grad
Chris Carter came up with the idea for the concert
after playing with his own band,
Saucerful, an alternative blues,
classic rock and folk group featuring Carter, Zach Milkis, Grant
Schwinge and Robin Lohrey. Joining Saucerful on stage will be

“May Day!” “May Day!”
In 2010, May Day means two things
to San Juan Community Theatre:
• May 1 is the day we’re planning to
wrap up our annual investor campaign for 2010 with new spring and
summer incentives…
• and to be frank, like the call of a
“May Day!,” we want to make sure
our budget doesn’t SINK during
these challenging economic times.
It is commitment from investors that
keeps the Theatre thriving, since ticket
sales account for only about 45%
of our operating expenses.
As Theatre Times goes to press, we’re still
quite short of our $125,000 Annual
Campaign goal to cover the Theatre’s
2010 operating expenses, which will
enable us to continue our commitment to providing both entertainment and education for our island
community.
Page As a special incentive to help us close
our campaign and concentrate our efforts more on bringing Friday Harbor
a stellar spring and summer of plays
and music, we’ve planned May and
summer specials, just for investors.
If you become an investor
by May 1, in addition to the annual
benefits listed on
page 9 (including free tickets
to events), we’re
also offering:
• An invitation to Supporting Cast,
Leading Players, Stage Managers and
Directors Circle investors to a reception with the one and only Leon
Redbone.
• A behind-the-scene tour of the set
of SJCT’s spring musical, My Fair
Lady (open to all investors).
• A picnic/barbeque party before the
July 17 return engagement of Abbey
Road Live -- one of last summer’s
most popular shows.

Your Investment . . . Your Theatre
It might seem like a broken record…but we need your
financial support now more than ever! We know these are
tough economic times for so many of us, but the reality is
that tickets sales do not fully support your Theatre’s ongoing operations and we remain committed to keeping our
ticket prices as low as possible so that our performances are
accessible to all our island residents.
We hope you have checked out the set of annual giving
levels we introduced last October and are listed to the right
along with a set of benefits that accrue at each investment
level; these include complimentary tickets to events, in-house

and his own El Rayo X. He pretty
much plays anything remotely that
looks like a guitar and wears anything
that is double knit. Check him out at
http://www.davidlindley.com/ Also, July 30 is the return of Alpha
YaYa Diallo from Guinea, West Africa.
He was here a couple of years ago and
that was the first time I’ve ever seen
the ENTIRE audience get up and
dance. He has garnered three Juno
Awards for World Beat and for his
guitar playing. He is such an exciting
performer and his band is so multitalented, especially the dancer! She
had everyone moving! He’s on Orcas
the next night and you just might see
me there also! You can see and hear
for yourself at http://alphayayadiallo.
com/site/ As always, there is some great, interesting and exciting music that we’re
working on for the fall and next year;
maybe some blues, maybe someone
we’ve had here before, maybe some
aloha? You just don’t know! Also, we are
still keenly working on the sound quality and consistency. We will get that
figured out, sooner than later. Music
is a great way to lift your spirits and
chase away the blues and there is
outstanding music coming right to
your doorstep … Don’t miss it! Mark Hetrick Your San Juan Community Theatre offers those who cannot afford
to attend a performance a way to enjoy the show, free-of-charge.
Islanders Karen and David Kratter have donated money to make
sure that folks who want to see a particular performance won’t be
deterred because they can’t afford the tickets. No proof of financial
need is required; simply specify to the Box Office that you would
like a free ticket via the Kratter Fund. In order to provide as many
families as possible with this benefit, please limit your request to
two per family, per show.
Thank you, David and Karen, for touching lives through SJCT.

The CATS Life
2010 marks the start of CATS’ 21st year. The
past 20 years have been filled with song and
drama, inspiration and camaraderie, and a
steadfast loyalty to helping San Juan Community Theatre not just survive, but thrive!
Over the years islanders have come to look
forward to our special fundraisers. Elegant
Edibles – a wonderful bake sale that shows off
the culinary talents of our members and other
friends of the Theatre – will be held April 3.
This year’s event will feature “The Baker Boys,”
island men who are excellent cooks and happily
donate their time and prowess in the kitchen
to enhance the Theatre’s coffers.
May brings something a little different. We
open the Theatre doors to provide a special gift
to the island’s little ones, the Teddy Bear Picnic
on Sunday, May 16. All island children are
invited to join us at this free event, along with
their moms, dads, and/or grandparents.
Summer finds us going through our closets,
our garages, and our attics--looking for those
special things that we no longer need or want,
and are in need of a new home. This vast
array of treasures is available for sale at our
very popular Attic Treasures event, which will
be held this year on Saturday, July 24. We
hope you will mark your calendars to join us
so you can see just which items are calling
out your name!
We invite anyone interested in joining CATS
and helping us raise money for the Theatre to
call us at 378-3211, ext. 32, leave a message
and we’ll return your call.
Happy Spring!

Volunteer Spotlight
Shelley and Woody Shelton-Wilson:
The Couple that Hosts Together…
A year and a half ago, Shelley and
Woody Shelton-Wilson started to become
“empty-nesters” when their youngest
daughter, Kai, graduated from Spring
Street International School (older daughter, Gaia, is 22).
Woody: I like selling
the wine and beer because it’s just a fun way
to meet people. People
are relaxed and ready
to joke and laugh.
Shelley: When Kai graduated, Woody
and I realized we’d have more to time
to do things together. I really enjoy
being able to see the productions and
can’t afford to see all that I want, so
volunteering as a host--I mostly help in
concessions--gives me the opportunity
to see more plays and live music.
Shelley: I knew for a
long time that there
was this opportunity
to see Theatre events
for free by volunteering…I’m so glad we
can now take advantage
of that and help the
Theatre at the same
time.
Woody: Shelley told me to volunteer
[laughs]. It’s really fun to do and get
out together. I’m self-employed [owner
of Whatzit Machining, Inc.] and kind
of am stuck in my hole a lot, so this
gets us out to see people.
Shelley: It’s fun meeting all of the other
volunteers and it’s a great way to get
involved in the community.
Volunteer and have fun with us!
