LESSONS IN FAITH
(FROM A CHILD ENTREPRENEUR)
By: Damian Hanley
As adults, we all know what it’s like to be “realistic” about our dreams. Maybe, as children, we wanted to be ¿remen or
nurses or trapeze artists, but alas, the labor market and our formative years taught us to be practical and think about the
likelihood of our knees/back holding up and that we’d probably need health insurance, etc. But as children, we dreamt
wildly. We shot for the stars because we didn’t know the emotional tax of failing at something. We tried stuff. We lived
life, and loved it. Our ideas were exciting and the stakes were low.
M
ost of you reading this never had a class in
entrepreneurship as children - maybe in
college, but it’s likely that you grew up not
knowing a single person that identi¿ed as
an entrepreneur. You knew a few small business owners
for sure, and corporate types that worked for mega
multinationals. But if you had to conjure an image of one,
maybe you’d have come up with The Donald, or a similar,
self-styled, arrogant high-roller that you didn’t necessarily
look up to. In fact, it was only this year that a university
(Drexel) founded a school dedicated to entrepreneurship.
True entrepreneurship makes the world a better place. It’s
an act of creation, and it has become a body of knowledge
worth teaching to young people. So when the opportunity
presented itself this past year, Father Bob jumped at the
chance to do just that in the context of our favorite Catholic
Charity. In years past, AFCAAM’s Digital U. program
introduced high schoolers to the world of media production.

Lessons in Faith, Cont.
As part of this year’s program, students worked
with St. John XXIII Parishioner and AFCAAM
Vice-Chairman, John Gamba, to learn the
principles of entrepreneurship and to explore ideas
for starting a new business. As part of the training,
students posted their creative business ideas on a
website called MakeYourJob.org.
mounted display. It was developed by Google as
a mass-market computer that displays information
in a smartphone-like hands-free format. Sales
were lagging so much that Google has actually
taken it off the market, but Nardos - in her in¿nite
wisdom - sort of identi¿ed the problem, and her
idea could have been the solution.
“We wanted to expand the impact of the AFCAAM
Summer Program from learning about technology,
to applying technology, to start a new business,” says
John Gamba. “All of these kids have entrepreneurial
mindsets. They simply need direction, support and
creative outlets to express themselves.”
“First, there wasn’t a lot of real life function to
them. There weren’t any apps that would make the
glasses useful in real life,” she recalls thinking. “And
secondly, they were weird looking. So I thought, why
not make them look like normal, fashionable glasses.
So that was the gist of the idea. My company would
re-design the look of the glasses, and then provide
a marketplace for better apps. I would take all the
functions of my phone, and put them into the glasses.
We thought about developing new apps that could
multitask for you, too. Like, if you were really busy,
the app could answer emails and read books for you.”
MakeYourJob (MakeYourJob.org) is a projectbased, social learning experience that teaches the
principles of entrepreneurship and challenges
student entrepreneurs to dream up new businesses.
Middle and High School Students are presented
with 16 mini-challenges from identifying a
founder, to crafting a sales and promotions strategy
to determining the start-up costs to launch their
business. Students create digital assets that are
posted on a Virtual Business Canvas for judging by
volunteer entrepreneurs af¿liated with the Network
for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).
“We had a guest speaker come in and ask us if we
wanted to win $2500. We were like, YES!” shares
Nardos Bekele, this year’s 2nd place winner. “I
told him my idea, and he got excited. He thought it
was great. I took it really seriously and submitted
my idea the same day. I ended up winning $1000 not bad for second place!”
Nardos came to the United States from Ethiopia in
the 6th grade. A native Amharic speaker, she was
frightened by the newness of the people and social
idiosyncrasies of our culture. “I used to have to
stay after school to get extra help writing essays.
But math was always my favorite subject, and was
placed in advanced classes.” Remarkably decisive
about her future, the 15 year old already knows
her double major in college - criminal justice
and medicine. These majors will launch her into
the 3 concurrent careers she’s chosen - FBI agent
working in a Behavioral Analysis Unit, Physician,
and forensic anthropologist. Needless to say, this is
someone that’s engaged in life.
MakeYourJob was sponsored by a local education
company, MassiveU.com and NFTE which is
headquartered in New York City. The program was
supported by a grant from Citigroup Foundation.
More than 6,000 students from 15 countries
registered and competed at MakeYourJob.org over
the past 6 months. The competition was ¿erce,
and some of the ideas that came through were
legitimately viable for marketing.
Nardos’ idea came from another guest speaker’s
presentation on Google Glass. Google Glass is a
type of wearable technology with an optical head| PAGE 3 |
Blown away by the creativity of the students that
participated, Gamba wonders “how many other
Nardos Bekeles are out there - students who want to
create, invent and apply what they learn to real-life
opportunities to build a business and make money?”
That’s a good question - one that can only be answered
if organizations like St. John XXIII Catholic Church
and Catholic Charities continue to support education
entrepreneurs like NFTE and AFCAAM.
As much as some want to connect Big Business with
greed and sundry other sins, entrepreneurship at its core
is a very Biblical concept. Its foundation is faith and
vision - and a genuine desire to make other people’s
lives better. He or she needs to take actions that involve
risk, with the faith that, if done honestly, her “talents
can be multiplied”. Sound familiar? Now faith is the
assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things
not seen. -Hebrews 11:1. And though none of us has
made a sacri¿ce like Christ made for us, humans are
capable of sacri¿ce, and entrepreneurship is one such
example of self-denial, undertaken for the bene¿t of
others. True entrepreneurship is not a get-rich-quick
scheme. A successful entrepreneur serves others, often
at great risk, dif¿culty, and cost. Pro¿ts are a sign that
the entrepreneur has successfully served others, but
pro¿t only comes at the end - sometimes never. Along
the way he or she risks ¿nancial safety for himself or
herself and family, retirement, savings, and possibly
the same of friends and family.
When AFCAAM teaches entrepreneurship, it’s
teaches kids how to have faith in themselves something a lot of kids these days need. “I can’t
say enough about St. John XXIII Catholic Church’s
generosity,” John shares. “They stepped up in a huge
way and made a world of difference for students
who face challenging circumstances. For 3 weeks,
these students got a taste of Silicon Valley thinking,
and really push their limits about their possibilities
for the future. The sky’s the limit for them.”

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a program for children ages 4 to
10 that takes place each Sunday during the 9:15 & 11:15 Masses.
After the opening prayer, the children along with their Catechist move
to the chapel to hear and discuss the Sunday readings at a level they
will understand. At the offertory the children return to the assembly
for the remainder of the Mass. There is no registration required for
Children’s Liturgy of the Word. While we want this to be a fun and
engaging time for the children, they are expected to behave in an
appropriate manner respectful to adults and to God’s House. Please
talk to your child about this before having them attend Children’s
Liturgy of the Word. Because this is a guided lesson, we ask that
children younger than age 4 do not attend. If you would like more
information, or to be a part of this program, please contact Chris Biel
at 561-7499.

Gospel ReÁections | Jack Conroy
John 12:20-33. Rationale for the CruciÀxion
The time is Passover, and Jesus has just entered the city to
the acclaim of many who shout “Hosannah! Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel,” quoting
Psalm 118:25, but adding the tag about kingship. This is the
prelude to the great Johannine Passion Narrative (Chapters
13-19). Here Jesus offers a discussion of life and death;
as with wheat, the grain falls to the earth, turns brown, and
is apparently “dead.” However, when it is buried and the
rains come, it sprouts again. Life springs forth from death.
Jesus tells us and his disciples that this is the real reason he
came to earth: to die. The Gospel of John does not have a
“TransÀguration” where God afÀrms Jesus’ Sonship; but in this
story, we have a voice from heaven afÀrming that Jesus will
glorify God’s name. And he repeats the same phrase he used
last week in comparing his death to the sign of the bronze
serpents in the desert: it is by being lifted up (on a cross) that
life will be offered all people. We also see Jesus’ humanity
peek through in the phrase, “my soul is troubled.” He asks if
he should be saved from this “hour,” but at once refuses to
consider this option. This is echoed in the Second Reading. It
is a human who died, albeit in St. John’s Gospel, this human is
also God.

Journey to Hope
“When did we see you a stranger and not welcome you Lord?”
Who do you think of as a stranger? Usually it’s someone
who: doesn’t Àt our expectations, doesn’t meet our criteria
for acceptability, or acts in ways that confuse us-deÀned as
“other”. Having a brain disorder can result in behaviors that are
interpreted by others as frightening or aggravating. What if a
family member becomes the stranger in our life, showing new
or strange behavior that call for us to adapt to a new way of
relating? Families and friends of those suffering from substance
abuse or mental illness must overcome stigma, frustration, worry
and grief in order relate to their family member in a loving way.

to conÀrm your registration. Thanks!
All new parishioners, and those interested in registering in our Parish, are invited to attend the New Parishioner Orientation; the next
Session is May 17th at 12:30. This is your opportunity to become
informed and active members of the Parish and participate in our
various ministries. Registering at St. John XXIII is a declaration of
your desire to be part of a Catholic community.
Please let the parish office know your email address OR you can
even update it on the Parish Website! www.johnxxiii.net Frequently,
those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptisms or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating that they

the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to stewardship
of time, talent and treasure. One means of verifying participation is
through the use of parish offertory envelopes.
If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish or are

Pope: Abandoning Elderly is a Sin
By Cindy Wooden of Catholic News Service
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Seeing the elderly only as a burden “is ugly.
It’s a sin,” Pope Francis said at his weekly general audience.
“We must reawaken our collective sense of gratitude, appreciation
and hospitality, helping the elderly know they are a living part
of their communities” and sources of wisdom for the younger
generations, the 78-year-old pope said March 4 at his weekly
general audience.
Continuing a series of audience talks about the family, Pope
Francis said he would dedicate two talks to the elderly, looking
at how they are treated in modern societies and at their vocation
within the family.
“An elderly person is not an alien,” he said. “The elderly person is
us. Soon, or many years from now -- inevitably anyway -- we will be
old, even if we don’t think about it.”
“If we do not learn to treat the elderly well,” the pope said, “we
won’t be treated well either” when the time comes.
In a talk punctuated with references to his own family life, his
grandmother and his experience visiting homes for the elderly
in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis said even Christians are being
inÁuenced by cultures so focused on production and proÀt, that
the biblical exhortations to respect the aged and draw upon their
wisdom are being ignored.
“We elderly are all a bit fragile,” the pope said, changing his
prepared text to include himself among the aged.
The elderly he visited in Buenos Aires, he said, would often tell him
that they had many children and that their children visited them.
“And when was the last time they came?” the pope said he asked
one woman. “She said, ‘Well, at Christmas.’ It was August. Eight
months without a visit from her children. Eight months of being
abandoned. This is called a mortal sin. Understand?”
“It is so easy to put our consciences to sleep when there is no
love,” he said.
“While we are young we are tempted to ignore old age as if it were
an illness to hold at bay,” he said. “But when we become old,
especially if we are poor, sick and alone, we experience the failures
of a society programmed for efÀciency, which consequently ignores
the elderly.”
“We want to remove our growing fear of weakness and
vulnerability, but doing so we increase the anguish of the elderly,”
Pope Francis said.
The aged are the “reserve of the wisdom of our people,” they
have experienced and survived the struggles to raise a family and
provide them with a digniÀed life, he said. Tossing them aside
means tossing aside their experience and the way that experience
can contribute to making life better today.
A society that cannot show gratitude and affection to the elderly “is
a perverse society,” the pope said. “The church, faithful to the word
of God, cannot tolerate such degeneration.”
“Where the elderly are not honored,” he said, “there is no future for
the young.”
Before the audience, Pope Francis met brieÁy with 60 bishops
from 35 countries who were participating in a conference
sponsored by the Focolare movement. Addressing the bishops
from “the bloodstained lands of Syria, Iraq and Ukraine,”
the pope assured them he is “united with them” each day
in the celebration of the Eucharist. “In the suffering you are
experiencing along with your people, you experience the
strength that comes from Jesus in the Eucharist, the strength to
go forward united in faith and in hope.”

Safe Environment Training. As Christian adults, we have a
moral and legal responsbility, and are entrusted by God with
the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors
and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within
or sponsored by our diocese, it is our commitment to provide
an environment which is safe and nurturing. In accordance
with the Diocese of Venice policy to offer continued Safe
Environment Awareness to all employees and volunteers,
the following parishes will hold Regional Safe Environment
Training, or SET. All volunteers must be trained! One should
NOT attend if Àngerprints have not been cleared. The
next training session is at Sacred Heart on March 26th at
6:00pm and on March 28th at 9:30am
The Light is On For You” This Lent, the Diocese of Venice is once
again undertaking the “The Light is On For You” campaign. The
primary purpose of this campaign is to encourage Catholics to
participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each week, priests
in every parish of the Diocese will be available to hear Confessions
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Fridays and 8:30a.m. to 10:30a.m.
