NEVER THE
SAME
By: Danielle Koleniak
Last week, the Parish welcomed 16 new members who were initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.
David Nelson (pictured below) was one of them. David, his wife Monica, and their family have been members of
our parish for ¿ve years. You may also know David Nelson as the Dean of Students and baseball coach at Bishop
Verot High School. The proud father of two children, Brayden and Grace, is now beaming with joy after getting
baptized and con¿rmed last weekend. I caught up with him four days before the Easter Vigil to talk with him
about the RCIA process and his faith journey.
Danielle Koleniak: Tell us a little bit about your story and
what let you to decide to go through the RCIA process?
David Nelson: I grew up in a family who had no religion.
My grandma had a picture of Jesus on the wall. I knew she
believed, but we never had any conversations. My mom and
Dad never went to church. I don’t even know what they really
believe in right now. Growing up, I went to church a couple
of times for Bible School with my uncle. I remember coloring
pictures there. I was little. Other than that, I had no religious
background. I knew of God, I knew of Jesus. I believed. There
was always something that drew me to religion even though I
didn’t have any background in it. When I went off to college,
I had a college roommate who was Lutheran. His girlfriend
was Catholic. He wanted to become Catholic, and they were

Never the Same, Cont.
planning on getting married, so he started the RCIA
process. He asked me if I wanted to join. I didn’t
really know much. I told him I wasn’t ready, but
he started getting me into Christian Rock. I started
listening to the music and it really drew me towards
God and Jesus. My roommate and I started having
faith conversations and I went to Sunday Mass
with him. Fast forward a few years and I end up
in Fort Myers and I met my future wife, Monica,
who is Catholic. We got engaged and I married
into a Catholic family. I eventually started coaching
baseball at Bishop Verot and we had our ¿rst child,
Brayden. He was baptized here at St.John XXIII.
We’ve been members of the parish for 5 years. My
wife and I started having conversations again about
me getting baptized. I work with a coach, Rich, who
really encouraged me. I started the RCIA process, in
September when my daughter, Grace was born. It
was always a goal of mine to become baptized.
DK: How do you think this experience will change
the dynamic of your family?
DN: We want to raise our children in the Church.
We want them to know Jesus and for Him to be the
center of their lives. I don’t think it’s going to change
our family, but it’s going to bring our family together.
I also get to set the example for my kids by going to
Mass and fully participate in Mass. This will impact
their kids, and their kids’ kids. For me, I changed
the cycle. I have two sisters and a brother. None of
them are baptized… I don’t even know if my parents
are baptized. I changed the cycle for my family
moving forward. I pray that my kids continue that.
I want them, to know too, that learning about Jesus
never stops— it is going to continue for their entire
life. Sometimes people have a hard time with that
because people want to be in control.
That was my journey. Everything happens for a
reason. The plan that God had for me was to surround
me with Catholicism and because of that, this is the
path I’m on.
DK: Talk about what the RCIA process was like
for you.
DN: The very ¿rst class, I sat down and our leader,
Barbara Catineau, was right there. She had such
a kind heart and her leadership has been very
inspirational to me. The ¿rst thing I took from this
whole experience was that there were so many
different people who go through this process.
Everyone with their backgrounds is so different. I’m
so happy to be a part of this dynamic community
who are all heading toward Jesus.
DK: How has your relationship with God
changed from September to now?
DN: There has de¿nitely been growth. I feel like I
have always had deep spirituality but nothing like
now. I go home and have conversations with my
wife, Monica, about what I learned. It allowed us
to have a special connection. That’s exactly what I
wanted to happen. I wanted this to bring my family
closer together and closer to God. I can’t tell you that
temptations haven’t gone away, but now I have the
strength to be able to push away from them. I always
looked forward to the day I would be baptized and
receive the Eucharist. Going through the classes felt
like home.
DK: What are your expectations of being baptized
and con¿rmed at Easter Vigil?
DN: I expect it to be emotional. In reality, I went
through 18 years of my life not truly knowing Jesus.
I think by taking the Eucharist for the ¿rst time it is
really going to connect me with God and knowing
that I’m home. This is where I’m supposed to be.
That feeling is going to be tremendous. I know now
that I’m a child of God and whatever the devil throws
at me, I can overcome. I have the tools.
| PAGE 3 |
DK: Is there anything else that you would like to
share about your experience?
DN: I just want to thank Barbara Catineau, Father
Bob, the Catechists and everyone who has helped
along the way.
I also want to share this story: We recently had a
retreat for RCIA. It took place during the same time
as the Easter Egg Hunt. We were able to take some
time to spend with our families at the Egg Hunt. What
made an impact on me was that Brayden came back
to me with a basket full of eggs and he said to me, ‘I
got to go show Father Bob!’ For me, it just showed
me how the Church and community are so great. You
can see that the Church and Father Bob have already
made an impact on my ¿ve year-old son.
When Father Bob says, he doesn’t care where you
come from, what you’ve been through, that you’re
welcome here, I know that it’s absolutely true. I can
attest for that. I’m so blessed to be surrounded by the
people at this church.

A Letter From the Bishop
April 6, 2015
Dear Monsignor/Father,
Having journeyed through the sacred time when the Church commemorates
the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Savior in the solemn liturgies of Holy
Week, it is hoped that you and your parishioners will be led to new heights of
fervor and devotion to our Lord.
Meditation on the sufferings of Jesus should also lead to a consideration of
the sorrow of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Among the many afÁictions
human beings can experience, addiction to drugs or alcohol is often ranked
as the worst. As priests, you know the hurt caused to individuals and
families by addiction. You also know that a priest can only do so much to
help. Intense counseling is also required.
With this letter, I wish to share with you a unique program for the treatment
of addiction, which has a location in St. Augustine, Florida. The Comunita
Cenacolo America is part of a worldwide organization founded in Italy in
1983. The community has been ofÀcially recognized as an International
Association of the Faithful of PontiÀcal Right.
The Cenacolo Community does not engage in standard rehabilitation
practices, rather, participants make a long term commitment to a “school
of life” where they can reorient themselves to seeking God’s will and
serving others. More information can be found on their website, www.
comunitacenacolo.org. The website also lists two regional contact persons
for Southern Florida. Mary Azzarelli may be reached by phone (813) 3181181, or by email at [email protected] and Renee Eaton can be
contacted via email at [email protected].
Please share this information with your parishioners, many of whom have
relatives or friends who have been affected by addiction. Thank you for your
care and pastoral service to the faithful of the Diocese of Venice.
This opportunity is taken to extend to you, the assurances of my continued
consideration, as well as my prayers for you and your ministry. Have a
blessed Holy Week!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
+Frank J. Dewane

Venice in Florida
Building the City of God

Be in the world but not of the world. One of the organizations
that helps me to do that is Parents Television Council. TV has
been in our homes for 60 years now and is a powerful inÁuence.
Once upon a time, a parent could safely leave a child in front of
a TV and not have to worry about the content being delivered for
entertainment. Not so today. Parents have the task of restricting
channels or shows which requires a lot of oversight!
Cable and satellite present a problem of conscience since our
monthly fees support networks that don’t deliver anything of
worth or that we never use. So we don’t have freedom of choice
in sustaining harmful programming, we are all supporting TV
programming when we pay our TV provider.
So how does a Christian Catholic today be “in the world of TV
programming but not of it”? Parents Television Council is one
avenue for changing our culture. For 20 years this organization
has been critiquing TV violence and sexual content because “our
children are watching”. This group researches the amount of
violence, profanity and sexual content in TV programming and
then organizes members to protest to the TV shows’ advertisers.
Did you know: 81% of shows about the family contain sexual
violence and 94% of family shows contain profanity? Other
campaigns besides advertiser accountability and cable choice
are: ratings reform, FCC enforcement of braodcasting indecency,
female sexualization, media violence and ratings reform. You
can check out their research at: www.parentstv.org
John 20:19-31 The Original Ending of the Gospel
I suspect that all four Gospels were written to help believers
answer the question, “Who was Jesus Christ.” In this reading,
which you will see provides an “ending” to the Gospel, we
have four critical points that the Evangelist made: One, the
Resurrection was real, not merely the Àgment of someone’s
imagination, or not merely the appearance of a “ghost.” Two,
a commissioning of the disciples to go forth. (We see another
commissioning in Chapter 21, probably written later by an
editor.) Three, the ultimate answer to the “Who?” question
in verse 28, when the most skeptical of the disciples afÀrms
Jesus’ divinity in an unequivocal manner: “My Lord and my
God!” St. John’s Gospel has the “highest” Christology, afÀrming
that Jesus was God. Not an emissary, not a prophet, but God!
Finally, (four) the reason for writing: that through that book those
who have never “seen” Jesus in the Áesh might believe, and
that through such belief, we might have Life in His Name. That
is the core of St. John’s Gospel, all wrapped up in 13 verses!

ReÁection from a Winter Resident
Maybe people are concerned that there are loyalty issues with
being registered at two parishes - there’s not! This letter came to
me from a Parishioner who perfectly articulates what it means to
have a heart of stewardship - no matter what part of the country
he’s in! Just wanted to share. - Father Bob
Driving to weekend Mass, we winter parishioners can only be
struck with how the Lord has blessed us to be able to live and
worship in such a beautiful place, green, sunny and warm. We
must feel (or at least we should feel) that we have shared greatly
in God’s abundance. We think of how it is at our northern
parishes, cold, dreary, icy, snowy and the slush as we walk
through the parking lot. The church has been built large enough
to handle all the winter parishioners and the ministry staffed to
provide our religious needs. Yet, I wonder if we truly pay back
in gratitude and stewardship (as is necessary) what has been
provided. I think not!!! I feel strongly that we need to support
our southern parish while we are here, at the same level as we
support our northern parish when we are there. I feel that it is
not only fair but the very least we can do to thank the Lord by our
gratitude and generous stewardship for permitting us to enjoy
such a wonderful place. We have been blessed.
- A Winter Parishioner of St. John XXIII
Those of you who are new to our Parish this year, and to those
who’ve been coming for years without being registered, we
need your help in staying organized and planning for our future
needs. Having an accurate database of our Parishioners will
help us know where and how we need to grow. Thank you to
everyone who registered with our Parish both online and via
registration card. If you’ve not received a welcome letter, please
call the Parish OfÀce to conÀrm your registration. Thanks!
All new parishioners, and those interested in registering in our
Parish, are invited to attend the New Parishioner Orientation; the
next Session is May 17th at 12:30. This is your opportunity to
become informed and active members of the Parish and participate in our various ministries. Registering at St. John XXIII is a
declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community.
Please let the parish ofÀce know your email address OR you
can even update it on the Parish Website! www.johnxxiii.net
Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptisms or
serve as sponsors for ConÀrmation or Baptism request a letter
stating that they are parishioners. To receive such a letter, one
must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and
be committed to stewardship of time, talent and treasure. One
means of verifying participation is through the use of parish
offertory envelopes.
If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish or
are unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your
prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly
offertory basket.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and children. We

Pope: Francis: Easter Vigil Homily
St. Peter’s Bassilica- Tonight is a night of vigil. The Lord is
not sleeping; the Watchman is watching over his people (cf.
Ps 121:4), to bring them out of slavery and to open before
them the way to freedom.
The Lord is keeping watch and, by the power of his love,
he is bringing his people through the Red Sea. He is
also bringing Jesus through the abyss of death and the
netherworld.
This was a night of vigil for the disciples of Jesus, a night of
sadness and fear. The men remained locked in the Upper
Room. Yet, the women went to the tomb at dawn on Sunday
to anoint Jesus’ body. Their hearts were overwhelmed and
they were asking themselves: “How will we enter? Who will
roll back the stone of the tomb?...” But here was the Àrst
sign of the great event: the large stone was already rolled
back and the tomb was open!
“Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the
right side, dressed in a white robe...” (Mk 16:5). The women
were the Àrst to see this great sign, the empty tomb; and
they were the Àrst to enter...
“Entering the tomb”. It is good for us, on this Vigil night, to
reÁect on the experience of the women, which also speaks
to us. For that is why we are here: to enter, to enter into the
Mystery which God has accomplished with his vigil of love.
We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. It is
not something intellectual, something we only know or read
about... It is more, much more!
“To enter into the mystery” means the ability to wonder, to
contemplate; the ability to listen to the silence and to hear
the tiny whisper amid great silence by which God speaks to
us (cf 1 Kings 19:12).
To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid
of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not
Áee from what we fail to understand, that we not close our
eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our
questions....
To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own
comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which
hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and
love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an
easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our
Àdelity and our very existence.
To enter into the mystery, we need humility, the lowliness
to abase ourselves, to come down from the pedestal of our
“I” which is so proud, of our presumption; the humility not
to take ourselves so seriously, recognizing who we really
are: creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners in
need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery we need the
lowliness that is powerlessness, the renunciation of our
idols... in a word, we need to adore. Without adoration, we
cannot enter into the mystery.
The women who were Jesus’ disciples teach us all of this.
They kept watch that night, together with Mary. And she, the
Virgin Mother, helped them not to lose faith and hope. As a
result, they did not remain prisoners of fear and sadness,
but at the Àrst light of dawn they went out carrying their
ointments, their hearts anointed with love. They went forth
and found the tomb open. And they went in. They had kept
watch, they went forth and they entered into the Mystery.
May we learn from them to keep watch with God and with
Mary our Mother, so that we too may enter into the Mystery
which leads from death to life.
