Church
Please join us at the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday. The
Archbishop will be the celebrant at Mass.
A SPECIAL WELCOME TO ALL, WE ARE SO GLAD YOU ARE HERE!
CHRIST IS RISEN! Today we celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, not only from the tomb but also in our own lives
through Baptism. Welcome to all as we celebrate the Lord’s gift of new life.
Whatever brings you to this Eucharist today, we hope will also bring you back to join with us each week as we celebrate the
abundant love of Christ for each of us. Please know that our parish is here for you. You are always welcome to share in the life
of our parish. If you have a need for prayer or other spiritual support, please contact one of our priests, Father Tom, Father
Nathan or Father Alessandro at our parish office at 913-681-3348. We will be happy to be of assistance to you.
Again, thank you for joining us today. May the resurrection of the Lord deeply touch our hearts and form us more fully in the
new life and hope that we have through Christ our Risen Lord.
Blessed Easter!

Phones. Laptops. Tablets. We are careful
about charging our devices so they are there when we need
them. In the busyness of our lives we forget to give our
marriages the attention they need to thrive. Save the dateSunday June 7, 2015, 1:00pm-4:00pm.
Are you living with infertility? Or, are you living with the
loss of a baby due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or
early infant death? It may be hard to believe but you are
not alone and there are others that are going through
similar situations or have in the past. That is why we will
be facilitating a four-week support group for both women
and men. Following the faith-based bereavement "In
Loving Remembrance" we will learn about each others'
journeys and in turn, how to move forward. If you are
interested in attending or have any questions, please call
Jean Hinman in the office 681-3348, Lisa Kopp 438-2904
or Jamie Mullane 952-8217.
Brad and Libby DuPont of the Archdiocesan Office of
Marriage and Family Life, will offer practical insights and
skills to help you recharge the joy in your most significant
relationship!
No cost for the event and child care will be available in our
nursery. RSVP to Ray Martin [email protected].

WEEKLY PRAYER
Easter Sunday
A Good Day to Die
Banns of Matrimony
Do you remember your own baptism? I wish I could; I was
baptized as an infant, just a few days old. I envy the adults
I have seen baptized at the Easter Vigil. Hopefully, they
experience what St. Paul says in the epistle we hear at the
Vigil. For Paul, Baptism is a sign of dying and rising to
new life. Sounds like Easter to me. So when Jesus died, he
rose from the dead. Is Paul telling us that we will rise from
the dead, too?
Yes, but that is not his main point. If all we think about is
our physical death, and hope we go to heaven afterwards,
we’re missing the point. The new life starts with our
baptism, not just our physical death. That’s why Paul says
things like, “our old self was crucified” or “sinful body
done away with….” (Rom 6:6) Baptism gives us a new life
NOW. The water is both cleansing and a sign of dying
(symbolic drowning) that help us see we are free from sin.
We are dead to sin when we begin to live in Christ. The
fictional Klingons have a saying “today is a good day to
die” to express courage in battle. But real Christians might
say that Easter is a good day to die: we have died to sin and
begun a new life in Christ.
How do we experience this dying to sin? First, we identify
the sinful areas of our life. Do I watch movies, video
games, or TV shows that encourage promiscuity, lying,
revenge, hatred or selfishness? What sins do I confess
repeatedly and what can I do to avoid them?
Next we look for ways to act differently: Can I spend more
time with friends/relatives who are examples of love? Can
I spend less time entertaining myself and more time in
prayer? Instead of complaining about what is wrong with
the world, can I find ways to make it better? (If not the
world, then my community or family.) These are a few of
the ways we begin our new in Christ.

We provide to all persons incarcerated in Johnson County
jails and juvenile facilities. This includes: Mass or
Communion Service, Catechesis or Scripture Study, and
facilitate regular access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
We participate in a letter writing mentoring program and

participate (and adults) by making cards with pictures
drawn, Bible verses, messages of hope, etc. using card
stock, construction paper, magic markers or colored pencils
(no crayons please), and first names only. Visit our website
at www.sdpo.org. This is an Ascension Ministry in
conjunction with other parishes. All are welcome and
needed! Contact Jean in the office for more details.

Did you know Ascension Parish has a program for anyone in
Kindergarten - 6th Grade? This program is for children who
attend public schools, home school and Catholic
schools. Our Catholic Faith is the greatest of gifts to pass
onto your children that will affect their whole lives long
after they have left home.
DID YOU KNOW
Family Formation is a truly innovative faith formation
program enabling parents to be the primary educators in the
Faith. Family Formation revolves around the family. This
shared learning experience spills over into the family’s
everyday life.
If you are interested in joining our parish,
please go to: www.kcascension.org and from
the Home Page/Click the About Tab/ and then
the Join Tab.
Here is how it works, parents and kids come once a month to
the parish to learn, and parents work at home on the next
three weeks’ worth of lessons. It is a program that is truly
renewing the family one lesson at a time.
Go to kcascension.org under the School of Religion section
to find out more.

Drama Times Two!
Last month the school was treated to not one, but two plays performed by the talented 7th graders. On Thursday, the cast of
“Sherlock Holmes” foiled the devious plan of Professor Moriarty and uncovered the mystery of the letters of Alice Faulkner. On
Friday, the cast of “Dorothy in Wonderland” showed us how Dorothy and friends landed in Wonderland, met a cast of colorful
characters, and how both Dorothy and Alice realized there is no place like home. Both casts had standing room only shows on
Friday and Saturday evening. Thank you to all who came to the show and participated in our first raffle. We are already looking
forward to the auditions for the musical in the fall.
Lourdes Pilgrims Service Project - Kids Helping Kids!
Ascension’s 5th graders have been doing a service project for the Live Greater Foundation helping them fill backpacks with
items for a trip for children/young adults with special needs to Lourdes, France to the Shrine of our Lady of Fatima. The families
have donated: games, pens, crayons, puzzle books, fidgits, ponchos, food, etc. to fill the bags to make the journey more
comfortable. Mrs. Montgomery’s son, Br. Angelus Montgomery, has accompanied the pilgrims in previous years and is going
again this year. In the picture below he is “face timing” with the 5th graders from NYC talking about the trip, about the
pilgrims, and about the service project. Our 5th graders have written personal letters to the pilgrims telling them about
themselves and then asking them to pray for a specific person or intention while they are in Lourdes. Many thanks to all of the
5th graders and their families for their donations to help fill the bags!
