I wish I could; I was baptized as an infant, just a few days old. I envy the adults I have seen baptized at the Easter Vigil. Hopefully, they experience what St. Paul says in the epistle we hear at the Vigil. For Paul, Baptism is a sign of dying and rising to new life. Sounds like Easter to me. So when Jesus died, he rose from the dead. Is Paul telling us that we will rise from the dead, too? Yes, but that is not his main point. If all we think about is our physical death, and hope we go to heaven afterwards, we’re missing the point. The new life starts with our baptism, not just our physical death. That’s why Paul says things like, “our old self was crucified” or “sinful body done away with….” (Rom 6:6) Baptism gives us a new life NOW. The water is both cleansing and a sign of dying (symbolic drowning) that help us see we are free from sin. We are dead to sin when we begin to live in Christ. The fictional Klingons have a saying “today is a good day to die” to express courage in battle. But real Christians might say that Easter is a good day to die: we have died to sin and begun a new life in Christ. How do we experience this dying to sin? First, we identify the sinful areas of our life. Do I watch movies, video games, or TV shows that encourage promiscuity, lying, revenge, hatred or selfishness? What sins do I confess repeatedly and what can I do to avoid them? Next we look for ways to act differently: Can I spend more time with friends/relatives who are examples of love? Can I spend less time entertaining myself and more time in prayer? Instead of complaining about what is wrong with the world, can I find ways to make it better? (If not the world, then my community or family.) These are a few of the ways we begin our new in Christ. Our Catholic Faith is the greatest of gifts to pass onto your children that will affect their whole lives long after they have left home. DID YOU KNOW Family Formation is a truly innovative faith formation program enabling parents to be the primary educators in the Faith. Family Formation revolves around the family. This shared learning experience spills over into the family’s everyday life. If you are interested in joining our parish, please go to: www.kcascension.org and from the Home Page/Click the About Tab/ and then the Join Tab. Here is how it works, parents and kids come once a month to the parish to learn, and parents work at home on the next three weeks’ worth of lessons. It is a program that is truly renewing the family one lesson at a time. Go to kcascension.org under the School of Religion section to find out more. 14 Church of the Ascension Easter Sunday April 5, 2015 MINISTRY NEWS (Continued) - SCHOOL Drama Times Two! Last month the school was treated to not one, but two plays performed by the talented 7th graders. On Thursday, the cast of “Sherlock Holmes” foiled the devious plan of Professor Moriarty and uncovered the mystery of the letters of Alice Faulkner. On Friday, the cast of “Dorothy in Wonderland” showed us how Dorothy and friends landed in Wonderland, met a cast of colorful characters, and how both Dorothy and Alice realized there is no place like home. Both casts had standing room only shows on Friday and Saturday evening. Thank you to all who came to the show and participated in our first raffle. We are already looking forward to the auditions for the musical in the fall. Lourdes Pilgrims Service Project - Kids Helping Kids! Ascension’s 5th graders have been doing a service project for the Live Greater Foundation helping them fill backpacks with items for a trip for children/young adults with special needs to Lourdes, France to the Shrine of our Lady of Fatima. The families have donated: games, pens, crayons, puzzle books, fidgits, ponchos, food, etc. to fill the bags to make the journey more comfortable. Mrs. Montgomery’s son, Br. Angelus Montgomery, has accompanied the pilgrims in previous years and is going again this year. In the picture below he is “face timing” with the 5th graders from NYC talking about the trip, about the pilgrims, and about the service project. Our 5th graders have written personal letters to the pilgrims telling them about themselves and then asking them to pray for a specific person or intention while they are in Lourdes. Many thanks to all of the 5th graders and their families for their donations to help fill the bags! 15 Church of the Ascension Easter Sunday COMMUNITY NEWS April 5, 2015 LITURGY SCHEDULE FAMILY DAY AT PRAIRIE STAR RANCH April 19 Prairie Star Ranch Saturday – April 11 - 4:30PM Greeters: O’Herron Family Sacristan: M P & S Fruin Servers: M Payne, M Rode, S Suchma Ushers: D Moorman, S Chubb, J Cutter, R LoBosco, S Malecki, S Troester, G Wuller Lec/Com: TBD E.M: M P & S Fruin, G Grimaldi, C Rager,W S Happer, C Kisinger, K Koettker, P Lauer, J A Loughran, D Lyle, C & M McGuyer, D Porch, T Redmond, B Reed, M & T Sell Bring your family and come out to Family Day at Prairie Star Ranch.
