Spring 2015
FR. JIM CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF VOWED LIFE
August 15, 1965 was a typically
warm and humid day in Godfrey, IL.
The Feast of the Assumption was the
day that I and 18 of my classmates
were longing for. It marked the end
of a yearlong novitiate experience
when we were totally cut off from the
world to concentrate on our spiritual
growth and prepare ourselves for our
first profession as Missionary Oblates.
While August 15 was the end of one reality it was also the
official beginning of my vowed life as a Missionary Oblate.
During our yearlong desert experience we were totally
cut off from visits with our family. On August 15 we were
allowed to have our families be present for this important
moment in our lives. A great joy for me was that my dear
mother and father and my youngest brother traveled from
Minnesota to Godfrey to be with me.
Our novitiate chapel was not large enough to accommodate the large group of novices and our families. The
Franciscan Sisters at St. Anthony’s Hospital in nearby Alton,
IL allowed us to use their beautiful chapel. It was air
conditioned!
On that August 15th I professed vows of Poverty,
Chastity, Obedience and Perseverance. As a 21 year old I did
not fully realize the full implications of what those vows
would eventually ask of me. I suspect it is much like
marriage, in that you ever so gradually live your way into the
new reality. While we had formal classes on the vows, our
founder, St. Eugene, summed them up by saying that we are
called “to give everything for Jesus.”
We were blessed to have a gentle novice master in
Fr. John Maronic, OMI. He helped make our novitiate
experience a joyful and relaxed experience. Before our
profession he shared with us what would be the “easiest
way” to live our vowed life. He simply said “live your vows
as faithfully as you can. When you give everything, God will
give you everything you ever longed for.” This wise and holy
Oblate was quite correct.
Over the last 50 years I have had the privilege of serving
in a wide variety of ministries. During this time I have
experienced the wisdom in the words of St. Paul. “In all
circumstances be grateful, for this is the will of God for you.”
(1 Thes. 5-18) I am grateful for you and the countless
number of good people who have modeled faithful living to
me over the years!
Come celebrate with Fr. Jim
Sunday, May 17, 2015 • 2:00 p.m. Prayer Service in Chapel
RECEPTION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING PRAYER SERVICE IN THE GARDEN COURT.
AUGUST 2015 THEME: “SOWING SEEDS OF MERCY”
“The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, rich in
kindness.” (Ps 103) In the words of Pope Francis, “God is
pure mercy.” Mercy is what God continually extends to us;
and it is mercy that God wants us to extend to one another.
Jesus was a master at extending mercy and compassion
to people who lived on the margins of society as well as the
religious establishment. Through our baptism, we are called
like Jesus to sow seeds of God’s mercy through deeds of
radical kindness. In mercy, God comes very close to us; in
mercy we come close to one another.
Jesus, our Divine Sower, teaches us that we reap what
we sow. We are called to never tire of sowing seeds of mercy
and compassion without expecting immediate results. Join
us at King’s House as we learn how to plant our seeds of
mercy in gentle and loving ways.

of God. The rest of the time is spent in solitude and silence, relaxing,

“DON’T FORGIVE TOO SOON”
Fr. Matt Linn, SJ
Fri., July 24 – Sun., July 26, 2015
Just as we have a natural process to stop the bleeding and heal
our physical wounds so too we have a natural grieving process
to heal emotional hurts. This retreat will slowly walk through the

depression (shame and guilt) and acceptance (discovering our
gifts). As the hurts heal, we discover new gifts for relating to God,
community and others.

SAYING YES: THE ART OF
CHRISTIAN DISCERNMENT
Fr. Albert Haase, O.F.M.
Fri., Aug. 7 – Sun., Aug. 9, 2015
This retreat will focus on the thorny, challenging, and often,
misunderstood topic of discerning God’s will in our lives.
Consequently, God’s will is not a static, once-in-a-lifetime decision
which needs to be figured out and accepted; rather, it is a dynamic,
evolving invitation from God that we are asked to respond to.
Hence the title, “Saying Yes.”
Retreat Begins:
Friday, August 7 at 8:00pm
Concludes:
Sunday, August 9 at 12:45pm
Retreat Fee:
$175.00 per person, single room

Serenity (12 Step) Retreat
SPIRITUALITY RETREAT
Fr. Walter Butor, O.M.I.
Fri., Oct. 2 – Sun., Oct. 4, 2015
This retreat will deal with the three legacies of AA and three
corresponding virtues of Christ living. The first legacy of AA is
Recovery, this is closely connected to the virtue of docility, i.e.
Teachability. Unity is the second legacy, and our AA Unity comes
from our virtue of Humility. Lastly, Service is the third legacy, and
this is related to the virtue of Charity or Love. Fr. Butor will speak
on these subjects and conclude with the necessity of prayer to
practice these principles in our daily life.
Retreat Begins:
Friday, October 2 at 8:00pm
Concludes:
Sunday, October 4 at 12:45pm
Suggested Offering:
$175.00 per person
(A non-refundable deposit of $30.00 per person is required.)
Fri., Nov. 6 – Sun., Nov. 8, 2015
There are several incidents in the gospels when Jesus encounters
people along the way whose faith is so astounding that they become
models of discipleship. Some are names, like the blind beggar
Bartimaeus or the Roman Centurion Jairus, but most are known only
by their faithful witness – the Syro-Phoenician mother who only
wanted healing for her daughter, the widow whose might became a
mighty example, and the unnamed woman who anoints Jesus as a
gesture of hospitality. This retreat will explore these minor characters
with major impact along with some modern day mentors who motivate
and inspire us.
Retreat Begins:
Friday, November 6 at 8:00pm
Concludes:
Sunday, November 8 at 12:45pm
Suggested Offering:
$175.00 per person
(A non-refundable deposit of $30.00 per person is required.)
