It was a huge success and I would like to thank Mr Ringrose, Mr Trouchet and Mrs Koster for taking us. I would also like to thank all the parent helpers and the students. In the boys team there was Jack Mason, Ben Hallett, Lachlan Trezise, Lochie Elliott, Isaiah Reid, Darcy O‟Halloran, Clancy Norrish, Matthew Norrish, Joe Draper, Hohepa Watene, Montel Miratana, Codey Baxter, Jamie Marinoni, Mark Gutjahr, Jordan Ladyman-Palmer and Taj Ramsden. In the girls team there was Megan House, Irma Stewart, Abby O‟Halloran, Olivia Draper, Lily Hope, Keisha Stewart, Andi Trezise, Emily Perkins, Piper Daly, Lara Norrish, Hannah Ramsden, Paetyn Benn and Marnie Walsh. During the day there were 69 events, the following people won their races: Andi Trezise – Butterfly, Piper Daly – Butterfly, Mark Gutjahr – Butterfly We were also lucky enough to get some places in the presentations: 10 Year Boys Runner Up - Lochie Elliott 12 Year Boys Runner Up – Matthew Norrish 12 Year Girl Runner Up – Andi Trezise 15 Year+ Boy Champion – Mark Gutjahr 15 Year+ Girl Runner Up – Marnie Walsh Congratulations to all these people and everyone who competed. The five schools we competed against were Boddington DHS, Boyup Brook DHS, Ravensthorpe DHS, Wagin DHS and Lake Grace DHS. The handicap award and the overall went to Boyup Brook with Kojonup coming fourth overall and fifth in the handicap. It was an honour to represent our school and I will remember that day for a long time. Well done to everyone who competed and showed great sportsmanship. Remember – “If you believe it, the mind will achieve it.” Ronnie Lott By Andi Trezise Year 7 FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Welcome to the last Newsletter of our first term! As we enjoy the last warm days of the season I can see sheep work, fencing and burning becoming the dominant programs as I drive each day! Hopefully there will be good rains shortly. I also hope that the term break provides you all with good opportunities to spend time with your children. I know this is easier to say than to do but I remember thinking my children would always be little and there would always be time „later‟. One day I realised they had all grown up and it was a bit late! We have had a very busy term and there really has been too much for me to list all the extra activities we have been engaged in here, but I will comment on student behaviour. At every one of the many in-school, out of school and away from school events we have organised this term, the constant theme has been how well behaved our students have been. Now I am not surprised by this, nor am I very surprised when I hear our teachers telling me this but it becomes quite special when I hear these remarks from community members and adults we have worked with both here and in other places. Have a safe, happy and holy Easter and enjoy the holiday time with your kids. FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor As the term draws to an end I would like to thank all of the staff, parents and students for their continued support and cooperation over the last nine weeks. We have had many wonderful achievements throughout the term and I am sure there are many more to come over the remainder of the year. Grip Leadership Camp th th On Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 March our Primary and Secondary leaders as well as the House Captains attended the GRIP Leadership Conference and camp in Albany. The students participated in an array of activities to build their leadership skills as well as learning how to have the confidence to stand up for what you believe in and voice your opinion. Thank you to Miss Caldas for coordinating the camp, Mr Ringrose and Mr Marsh for running the team building games and driving the bus. ANZAC Day Service th The combined school ANZAC Day service will be held at KDHS on Friday 24 April, commencing at 10:00am sharp. The Year 9/10 International Food Class will be preparing morning tea to be served after the service in the school Library. Please feel free to come and join us for this service. Have a safe and happy Easter Holiday break! FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet High School students will be bringing home an Interim Report today. This is to give you a quick indication of your child‟s rd progress so far this year. Attached to the report is a booking sheet for a Parent Interview on Thursday 23 April which is in the first week of next term. This will give you the opportunity to discuss your child‟s progress and achievement in more detail with the relevant teachers before the formal written report at the end of Term 2. Year 7 and 9 students (and Year 3 and 5 students in primary) will be sitting NAPLAN tests in the areas of Reading, th Writing, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy (both with and without a calculator) during Week 4 of Term 2 (May 11 th – 15 ). Unless specifically exempted or withdrawn from the tests all students in public and private schools across Australia will sitt these tests. Parents will be given a report later in the year detailing student achievement. Year 9 students can gain an exemption from the OLNA testing program in Years 10, 11 and 12 by showing their competency in Literacy and Numeracy through the NAPLAN tests. Mr Trevor Carruthers, Deputy Principal Katanning SHS, spoke with our Year 10 students about recent changes to the Year 11 and 12 curriculum and certification. His talk applied to all students regardless of whether they will be attending a public or private school, attending TAFE or seeking employment or a traineeship. He will return in Term 3 or 4 to assist students with course and subject selection. 51 secondary students have been given the opportunity to attend the Albany ANZAC 100 Years Commemoration Service. All students have been learning the lyrics to „The Green Hills of Albany” by Glyn Lehmann during English with Miss Caldas which will be sung during the service. Students have been selected based on their Good Standing throughout Term 1. To be eligible your child had to have an attendance of 75% or greater and not accumulated any serious behaviour breaches. After the service students will then be participating in Laser Tag as an extra reward for their positive behaviour. A reminder that secondary students should not be at school before 8:30am but I realise that sometimes this may be unavoidable. Students who are at school before that time are requested to sit outside the Library until 8:30am. Students recently had the opportunity to participate in a circus skills workshop. Secondary students worked with visiting acrobats on the trapeze and with Colin Clinch on Walking Stick Carving. I was particularly impressed with the efforts and involvement of the Year 10 boys. A quick reminder to parents and students that mobile phones are not permitted at school. If they are seen they will be confiscated and returned to a parent after school. Primary - Clancy Norrish, Darcy O’Halloran, Lucy Johnston and Isabelle Plowman Our first game was against Williams, we had lots of competition but we managed to beat them all six love. Next game was against Beverly which we were all very nervous about but we managed to pull it together. We congratulated Beverley on their win against us. Next was Great Southern Grammar, where there was a lot of umpiring coming from the side lines. At the end of our matches we were very lucky to win against them. Our last game was against Donnybrook; we had to win this one so we could come second. We were lucky enough to win which was very exciting for our team. Overall we came second to Beverly in the state final championships. All the teachers and parents were very proud of us and so were we and we hope that we will get that opportunity again. I was proud of my team because not only did they give it their best shot but they also had incredibly great sportsmanship on and off the court. Next game was against York District High School, the game was a very tight match but in the end York DHS conquered us. York District High School was next, were the scores were a lot closer 19 – 18. Our final game was against Wyalkatchem District High School. There were quite a few items that were placed on Back Order with this issue. An ETA wasn‟t given-but as soon as the orders arrive I will get them to you. Our Scholastic Book Fair will be on again in May. Keep an eye out for information coming home with your children. Book Fair is fun and rewards from sales go directly back into resources for our school. More to follow on that! Sonya Koster 65% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 35% 30% 20% 10% 0% UnexplainedNote Provided Mr Lindsay Campbell, Engagement & Transitions Manager Department of Education South West Education Region – Albany along with Mr Damien Yarran, Regional Attendance Coordinator – Albany Local Office visited Kojonup DHS last week to discuss “All things Attendance”. Mr Yarran‟s role this year will be to provide special focus on Aboriginal attendance, especially in relation to working with AIEO‟s and school staff to connect with the wider community and to assist in the case management of students at risk through attendance concerns. Mr Yarran will be adopting a “case management” process for all schools. Mr Campbell outlined the importance of getting parents to inform the school on a child‟s absence from school. The Education Department requires that all absences must be authorised. “Every day counts” is a catch phrase used to reinforce to parents how important it is to attend school on a regular basis. The 80% - 89% category is termed the “Indicated” category, just below the “Regular” category at 90% and above. For a student to move from the “Indicated” category an improvement of just ½ day per week average is all that is required. The advantages of this to your child‟s educational achievement would be significant. LIBRARY NEWS The pick for the week for Lower to Mid Primary THIS IS CAPTAIN COOK By Tania McCartney & Christina Booth The book is a clever take on the story of Captain Cook told through the staging of a school play. The history is there, but so is the story of the children, the teacher and the audience-and a runaway chook! At the end of the book is „Cook‟s Gallery‟, which shows real-life paintings of Cook, his ship and his travels. The pick for Upper Primary & High School BRIDGET A NEW AUSTRALIAN By J. Maloney 11 year old Bridget isn‟t afraid of where she‟s going to, she cries for what she‟s leaving behind. When famine takes hold of her beloved Ireland she and her sister Maeve are sent to Australia on a government work scheme in the Colonies. It is supposed to be a chance for the girls to have a new life… Or was the new life just as cruel as the old one??? Any questions please come and see me or call 9831 2300. Sonya Koster GRIP LEADERSHIP CAMP Primary Report: th On Tuesday 24 March all the school leaders from both Primary and Secondary arrived at the undercover area to get on the bus which was leaving for Albany. Everyone arrived and helped load bursting suitcases and sleeping bags. Then Mr Marsh put the bus in gear and we were off!! The teachers on this camp were Mr Marsh (bus driver), Miss Caldas and Mr Ringrose. Many people played cards and played ipods on the drive to Albany. After a long drive the bus arrived and dropped off the Primary Leaders at the Albany Hall. We walked up the many flights of stairs to the theatre. A series of hosts including Jenny, Kristie, Ron and Crazy Karl taught us how to stand up for what is right, take opportunities to be a leader and how to make a leadership plan. We also played several games including one called “loud noises” which was clearly a hit with the students. After that we were picked up and taken to the camp where we played two team work games. We had a much needed shower and ate our yummy dinner and discussed plans for next term and types of fundraisers. Then we played “spotlight” which quickly turned into “sardines”. Mark was a very good hider. Then we jumped into a soft bed to sleep. When we woke up we had a delicious breakfast then we dropped the secondary students off to the Leadership Conference. The primary guys drove to Emu Point and hired bikes. The boys had a swim in the freezing cold water and we then had our lunch. Darcy‟s whole roll was stolen by a seagull! After lunch we picked up the secondary students and then headed back to Kojonup. We all agreed that we would take our awesome advice back to school and start being a leader immediately. Thank you so much to Mr Ringrose, Miss Caldas and Mr Marsh for taking us and supervising. Thank you to everyone who made the trip possible, we hope we can go on something that fun next year. It will be hard to beat. Darcy O’Halloran, Year 6 Secondary Report: th On Tuesday 14 March our leaders from the school, both Primary and Secondary went to Albany for a Leadership Camp. On the Tuesday the primary students went to the Leadership Conference while the secondary students got to do some fun activities around Albany. Firstly we walked up to Mt Clarence where we could see Emu Point and the islands off the coast. We then walked some of the bush tracks and found trenches, cannons and missiles. We then went to Emu Point where there was a big jetty that was fun to jump off. After our time in the water Mr Ringrose took half of the group on a bike ride while Mr Marsh looked after the other half. On the bike ride we rode from Emu Point to Middleton Beach and back. Despite the big hills and the distance we travelled it was one of the highlights of my trip. We had lunch and then went to collect the primary students. When we got to camp and sorted out who was sleeping where, we played some group activities. The first activity was to get everybody through a web made of string. It was a great team activity because everyone had to help everybody by either lifting them through the web or catching them on the other side. The second activity was the magic hat challenge. This challenge was mentally and physically exhausting. You could only wear the hat once and we had to get everybody across to the flag pole. Some of the boys took three little kids and the rest either took one or two people. It was a very confusing activity. We then all had showers and dinner. After dinner we played spotlight and charades, which was really fun. The next morning we all had breakfast and the secondary students went to the leadership conference and the primary students got to do the fun stuff. The leadership conference was so interesting and not boring at all, I mean what conferences do you go to and expect to dance around and then has a competition on who can scream the loudest? We all learnt a lot on how to improve our school and I‟m sure we will put them to use this year. We learnt about team DNA, in your team DNA you much have; goals to work towards, respect for everyone in your team, have every person in your team contribute, have accountability, be able to count on your team members to get something done and true belief, everyone has to believe that you can do it and if it doesn‟t work the first time to try again. I found this very important for our school leadership team. Overall everyone had a lot of fun and it was a great camp that got us to know everyone a bit better so we will be able to work as a group better this year. Thank you to Miss Caldas, Mr Ringrose and Mr Marsh for looking after us while at camp. By Marnie Walsh Year 9 ADIDAS SCHOOL FUN-RUN We will be holding an Adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on th Tuesday 19 May in conjunction with the Cross Country Carnival. The Adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved. All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will be used to purchase sporting equipment for KDHS. Last year we managed to raise $1,600.00, which was used to upgrade the Athletics equipment. There has not been a decision made for the allocation of the funds this year, therefore I am open to any suggestions from parents and students. Please send these through via my email [email protected]. We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10.00 or more will receive a reward for effort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday to Disneyland! Finally, we would like to welcome all parents and family members to attend the carnival to help cheer on the students. Derek Ringrose GENERAL LUNCHBOX TIPS Sandwiches, wraps and rolls 1. Choose your bread. Experiment with different types such as bread rolls, Turkish breads, English muffins, wraps, pitas and tortillas 2. Choose your vegetables. Some ideas include lettuce, spinach, capsicum, cucumber, tomato, sprouts, mushroom, avocado, corn kernels or grated carrot 3. Choose your other ingredients like chicken, ham, tuna, cheese or egg 4. Choose your spread. Ideas include cream cheese, mustard, low fat mayonnaise, hummus, relish and guacamole. Some foods can make the bread go soggy. Try putting lettuce or spinach in between the food and the bread. Alternatively, send them in separate containers and let your child assemble their own sandwich. To encourage kids to eat their sandwiches, you can cut off the crusts, cut into fingers, or cut into fun shapes using a cookie cutter.
