Historical Note
Indiana Football dates back to the 1890s when
Indiana State Normal School competed against
regional athletic clubs and other schools. Many
of the rivalries of today started nearly 100 years
ago. Fans came by horse-drawn carriage and
trolley to line the field and watch the tied 0-0
game between ISNS and its arch rival Kiski
School on November 20, 1911. In 1914, head
coach William Smith, a former ISNS football
player, led the team to a 34-3-1 record from
1914 to 1917.
One of the greatest moments in Indiana football history was on November 24, 1917, when the
team captured the National Normal School football championship by winning against
Kalamazoo Normal School, 40-0. In 1917, ISNS outscored their opponents 623 to 7, and the
team’s only loss was 0-7 to the University of Pittsburgh Freshman. That year ISNS was led by
Quarterback Edmond Melican from Worcester, Massachusetts. The 1917 ISNS football team
was one of the most remarkable teams in the 100-year history of IUP football.
The guiding force behind
championship football performances
was Coach George Miller, who was
described by students as, “a gentleman
with a whistle.” Coach Miller was
head football coach from 1927 to 1947
and has the distinction of coaching two
undefeated teams. His 1934 squad
finished 6-0 and the 1940 team 7-0-1.
One of the most outstanding
achievements of Coach Miller’s career
was the creation of the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference in 1951.
Indiana has won 17 PSAC West
Division titles. In 1955, football fans
came from across the state to watch
Marshall “Mish” Woodring return
punts. That year, the editor of The Penn named Woodring, “Indiana’s greatest all-time athlete.”

Coach Charles “Chuck” Klausing was the Indiana Head Coach from 1964 to 1969. His 1968
team went to the NCAA Atlantic Coast Region Football Championship, the Boardwalk Bowl,
against the University of Delaware, played in the Atlantic City Convention Hall on Saturday,
December 14, 1968. This 24-31 game was the first NCAA Football title game played indoors.
From 1983 to 1995, IUP repeatedly qualified for the post-season games, and by 1995, they
ranked 19th in the country, making it the 12th straight year that Indiana was ranked in the top 20.
No other school in the country at that time could make that statement. IUP, then called the
Bears, regularly appeared in the NCAA post-season competition, including two appearances in
the NCAA Division II National Football Championships in 1990 and 1993 under Coach Frank
Cignetti, Sr. In 1993, IUP Football won 13 consecutive games. In 2011, IUP Football won its

Scope and Content Note
This collection contains programs, brochures, guides, videos, and memorabilia related to the IUP
Football Team from the 1890s to the present. Most notable are the football team programs from
games played between 1934 to the present. Series I includes Football Game Programs (Digitization
in Progress, contact the IUP Special Collections & University Archives for access), Series II has
department files and other publications about the Football Team, Series III includes audio / video
recordings, and Series IV contains Football Memorabilia back to 1912.
Provenance
This collection was donated by the Athletics Department, alumni, athletes from the IUP Football
Team, and materials were also donated by the Office of University Development. The Football
Game Programs in Series I were digitized by Joseph Dell in 2014-2015.
