Welcome
Our very own company, the Norwich Players, brings
you five very different plays this spring to provoke,
excite and challenge. March sees Arnold Ridley’s
classic thriller ‘The Ghost Train’ brought to the stage;
a stylish piece that is guaranteed to have audiences
on the edge of their seats. In April we transport you
to the palaces and battlefields of ancient Egypt and
Rome, in one of Shakespeare’s most powerful plays
‘Antony and Cleopatra’; a tale of lust, longing and
tragedy. Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Neighbourhood Watch’
is May’s production, a painfully funny and truthful
play about a “broken society” and the rise of the
volunteer vigilante. In June we perform Joe Orton’s
classic farce ‘What the Butler Saw’; a play full of
social commentary told through the playwright’s
trademark subversive wit. Finally, in July we perform
Ronald Harwood’s much cherished play ‘Quartet’, a
hilarious and poignant play about redefining old age
and growing old with hope.
Alongside our main house productions we are
presenting more and more work in our Emmerson
Studio Theatre and Redwell Maddermarket Bar.
Throughout the brochure you will find lunchtime
theatre productions, daytime shows for young
people, and concerts from visiting performers in
these newly refurbished spaces.
The Theatre has a long history of hosting
performances by some of the biggest names in the
business. Highlights this season include visits by
renowned actors Robert Powell, Patricia Routledge
and Timothy West; concerts from jazz greats such as
Claire Martin and Ray Gelato, Jacqui Dankworth, and
the Perico Sambeat Quartet. There’s spellbinding
dance and guitar from international favourites Jaleo
Flamenco, and comedy from the London circuit with
Jongleurs.

Spring has finally arrived and so it’s time to tell
you about our March to July programme. There is
something for every taste over the coming months,
with productions of period and modern plays,
live music of all genres, literature events, dance,
performances for younger audiences, and some
familiar faces.
Stash Kirkbride and Peter Beck
Over the winter months Maddermarket stalwart,
artist John Stokes, has been creating our very own
GoGoDragon. Affectionately known as GoGoMadder,
John has depicted all of Shakespeare’s plays on the
dragon. It is a remarkable piece of work and has been
captivating visitors who have been into the venue to
see its development. The completed dragon will be
on display in the Theatre’s lower courtyard from the
21st June to the 5th September and forms part of the
GoGoDragons2015 trail, brought you by Wild in Art
and Break charity, raising vital funds for vulnerable
children and young people across East Anglia. We are
proud to be involved in this exciting project. Look out
for the auction of the dragons on 1st October!
Finally, we look forward to welcoming you to
the theatre for one or several more of the fifty
performances and events on offer in the brochure.
Best wishes

On a winter’s night, March 19th
1947, a group of passengers
becomes stranded at a remote
railway station. This is the story
of what took place that night.
As good humour fades and tempers
rise towards the station master’s
warnings to leave at once, a distant
locomotive is heard thundering
towards our helpless heroes.
Join us for this dramatic comedythriller by Arnold Ridley, and return
to an age of style, wit, and romance.
The Ghost Train is about to
return, only this time it’s even
bigger, louder and altogether
more terrifying to behold.

One of Shakespeare’s most powerful plays, the story centres on one of Rome’s three leaders, Mark Antony,
and the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. These two lovers are first featured at Cleopatra’s palace, but as the play
continues Antony’s political and social duties take the action to Rome, Syria, Actium, Parthia (modern day
Iraq), Athens, and to various military camps in Egypt. In short, the lovers are put in locations and situations
where they question each other’s loyalty and love. The play’s ending is an example of how passion mingled
with power, treachery, and misunderstanding, can lead to tragedy.

Alan Ayckbourn describes Neighbourhood Watch as a “dark farce”. It is certainly no light-hearted comedy,
although there are some deliciously funny moments and much of the dialogue is hilarious. How could an
Ayckbourn be otherwise?
Middle-aged brother and sister, Martin and Hilda, two good Christian people, the like of which anyone
would like to have as neighbours, have recently moved into a “nice” area. However, a misunderstanding
prompts them to start a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, in which they are enthusiastically joined by some
less well-intentioned and decidedly odd neighbours. The scheme escalates out of control until they are
surrounded by razor wire and have erected stocks for the punishment of erring citizens.

A delightfully insightful comedy of ageing and art. In a residential home for musicians three retired opera
singers live on their memories, and develop routines and strategies to cope with the limitations of their
declining years. The unexpected arrival of a new resident, Jean, a full blown diva and Reggie’s ex-wife, both
shocks and stimulates the trio. Her presence brings the tantalising possibility that they might become a
quartet and reprise their celebrated performance from ‘Rigoletto’, one last time. But will Jean sing? And why
did the marriage end?
