CASE OF THE MONTH
UC Davis dermatologists
successfully treat Vizsla’s
ear infection
B
eing a Vizsla, 4-year-old Rosie is a very
active dog that enjoys the outdoors. More
than a year ago, she got a foxtail — a barley-type wild grass — caught in her ear. Covered
with microscopic projections, foxtails can pose
severe health risks to dogs, as they migrate into
tissue causing allergic-like reactions and infections. The foxtail in Rosie’s ear had to be removed
under anesthesia, and what followed required her
to be brought to the UC Davis Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital.
After the foxtail removal, Rosie’s ear continued
to have a recurrence of a dark waxy build-up, with
mild inflammation and historical Malassezia, a
fungus naturally found on the skin of many animals. Rosie’s owner brought her to the VMTH’s
Dermatology Service for further evaluation. A CT
scan showed a clear middle ear so VMTH dermatologists removed the accumulated debris with
flushing and suction using a video-otoscope.
Video-otoscope technology allows clinicians to
see into an ear canal using a state-of-the-art oto-
scope with a fiber optic camera system that projects images onto a large screen, such as a computer monitor. The scope helped the dermatologists more precisely remove the debris in Rosie’s
ear. Samples of the debris removed with the videootoscope were examined under the microscope
and revealed evidence of a fungal infection.
Fungal and bacterial cultures of the debris from
Rosie’s ear confirmed that the ear was infected by
a fungus known as Aspergillus niger, which can
lead to serious health issues if not treated properly. Rosie was placed on antifungal medication, and
the clinicians discussed long-term antifungal
treatment options with her owner, as those would
take several months to clear Rosie’s condition.
“We tried oral and topical medications which
resulted in minor improvements over two
months,” said Dr. Catherine Outerbridge, DVM,
THESE CATS
DACVIM, DACVD, Associate Professor of Clinical
Dermatology at UC Davis. “We then decided to
have Rosie come in frequently to be able to use
the video-otoscope to more effectively flush her
ear and instill specially compounded antifungal
medications into that ear.”
Over the course of about six months, in addition
to an oral and topical medication regimen done at
home, VMTH dermatologists performed multiple
flushes of Rosie’s ear using the video-otoscope,
which required Rosie to be sedated.
Each procedure showed a marked improvement
with lessening of the fungal build-up. Finally,
almost a year after her initial encounter with the
foxtail, Rosie’s ear was clear of the fungus.

A SECOND
CHANCE
Donna Costley’s Wilton-based
rescue group is about more
than saving birds
D
By David Allen Brown
onna Costley saves parrots. And in a very real way, the 35 parrots she cares for on her five-acre
sanctuary in Wilton save her. Costley operates Second Chance Bird Rescue out of her home and of
the 35 birds she has inside and outside of her sprawling ranch home, 12 of them cannot be adopted.
But each one of the Amazons, cockatoos, conures and macaws she cares for also care for her as she
continues to process her grief.
In 2012, her son Christopher Schmidt, wife Diana, and their three young children were killed in a fiery
vehicle crash in Nebraska while moving back to California from Washington, D.C. The grief for the mother
of six was unbearable. She retired early from a Veterans’ Administration job in Fairfield in 2014 and then
moved to Wilton with her husband, Gary, on a parcel large enough to accommodate the birds, and a
remembrance garden for her family members she lost in the crash.
“(The birds) are therapy for me,” Costley said on a blazing June afternoon as she showed a couple of
visitors her menagerie that also includes dogs, cats, chickens, goats, a turtle and peacocks. “My doctor
told me it was either work or my health. I chose to retire.”

continued…
Her full-time job now is caring for the animals and fielding prospective adoptive owners for the
parrots. Because many of the parrots she has were abused, Costley is careful in selecting whom to
allow to adopt. She performs a home inspection to make sure the birds will be healthy and safe in
their new environment and coaches the new parrot parents on what can be toxic to parrots, such as
the use of Teflon-coated cookware, incense and candles.
At her Wilton sanctuary, the more delicate birds are kept in large and well-appointed cages in a
three-car garage. The larger parrots are kept in one of 12 10-foot-by-10-foot outdoor aviaries that
were originally meant to be dog kennels. The aviaries have roofs and floors made of stepping stones
to protect the birds from diseases found in the soil, as well as making daily cleaning a lot easier,
Costley said.
Each morning, Costley rises and begins the hours-long process of cutting fruits and vegetables
and combining the meals with specially formulated feed pellets and nuts for each of the parrots.
Before feeding time she cleans and maintains each cage, then makes sure the parrots have fresh
water and finally delivers the munchies.
“I go through $600 a month in feed bills,” said Costley, whose Second Chance Bird Rescue
operates as a non-profit. “I spent $200 just this week in walnuts.”
But the birds seem to appreciate the effort and expense. They all perk up as Costley makes
her way through the lines of cages. She talks to each one and calls to them by name. Some have
featherless bodies from neurotically tearing out their plumage. Others flinch or hiss at visitors,
still traumatized from past owners who, for example, taped them up with duct tape and used
them as footballs. That’s just one of the terrible stories Costley relates to visitors. But the most
common reason for surrenders is owners
passing away and the family members
either not able to or willing to care for
birds that can live into their 60s.
The oldest bird Costley has is a 42-yearold Moluccan cockatoo named Hoagie.
There’s also a pair of blue-front conures
named Amigo and Joey who Costley estimates are at least 30.
She affectionately calls them her “grumpy old men.”
Before Costley rescued parrots she started fostering some birds with
the intent to just keep a few. But she fell in love with her first foster bird,
Princess, a peach-colored Moluccan cockatoo, and decided to keep her.
It was a “foster failure,” Costley joked. Princess will enjoy the rest of her
life in a huge cage with plenty of food, toys and love.

Integrative veterinary medicine emphasizes
the partnership between our doctors, you
and your pet making use of all appropriate
diagnostics and therapies, both conventional
and alternative. Our philosophy neither rejects
conventional medicine nor accepts alternative
therapies uncritically. We use natural,
effective, less-invasive interventions whenever
possible. Dr. Elizabeth Settles is a boardcertified internal medicine specialist and the
owner of Bowman Veterinary Hospital.
Dr. Kelly Chandler practices both Western and
Eastern medicine and is certified in Veterinary
Acupuncture. Dr. Lauren LaRue practices

continued…
Costley’s first rescue came in 2008 when she found a want
ad on Craigslist from a couple in Lodi who had a Moluccan
macaw kept in a dog crate. They weren’t necessarily abusing
the bird, Costley said, but were just uneducated about the
needs of the highly social and often noisy birds.
Last year was Costley’s busiest in terms of rescues, with 20
birds taking up residence in Wilton. She’s on pace to eclipse
that mark, with 13 rescues six months into 2015.
“I don’t need more rescues, I need more donations,”
Costley said. Costley is getting the word out, not only
about her parrot rescue services, but the need to support
the non-profit, much like people support the SPCA. On
the third Sunday of every month Costley and a select few
parrots will set up in front of the Pet Smart in Elk Grove.
Costley will hand out literature and business cards, give free
consultations and advise guests to not buy from breeders.
“They’re just like puppy mills because these beautiful
parrots can be as much as $12,000,” Costley said. “I know,
because I bought a blue Hyacinth macaw for that much.
That’s why I named him Chase – after the bank.”
From time to time Costley and her parrots are invited
to set up in front of the Tractor Supply store in Galt. That’s
where Christine Mitchell and her family saw Costley with
a couple of birds. The Galt resident said she once had an
eclectus parrot in her early 20s, but went off to the military
and was forced to sell her.
“I had one with a bright red head and a blue chest and
just adored her and she loved me back,” Mitchell said. “I
really wanted another one but didn’t have $2,000 or so to
spend. So when we saw Donna in front of Tractor Supply, I
asked if she had an eclectus, and she did.”
Ruby had been surrendered a year earlier after her male
owner died and her female owner was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s. The adoption went through without a hitch after a home visit from Costley and a visit by the
Mitchells to Costley’s home in Wilton. Mitchell
said Ruby is adjusting nicely to her new home
and family members.
“She’s doing great and starting to talk again,”
said Mitchell, who has cared for Ruby for a
month now. “She says ‘hello,’ ‘peek-a-boo’ and
makes cat calls. More words are starting to come
out as she feels more safe and she’s getting used
to riding around on the shoulders of my girls
(ages 6 and 12). She especially likes it when my
parents come over to visit because I think she
identifies with them because they’re older, like
her former owners.”
Mitchell said she spent $200 for Ruby’s
adoption and spent another $50 for the
cage Ruby had been in for much of her life.
That helped the move and transition go a lot
smoother, she said, as all of her toys and
perches also made the move.
Ruby’s adoption warms Costley’s heart. It also made room for another rescue bird, one that she’ll love on
and one that will also rescue her as she continues to cope with the tragic loss of loved ones.
Staying busy is a good way to deal with grief and Costley definitely stays busy tending her flock.
She knows her efforts pay off. Her good deeds honor those she lost.

and the environment. These engaging presentations
include topics from the Ebola virus epidemic to antibiotic
resistance, and autism to water management during
drought. Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, author of
the New York Times best selling book Zoobiquity: the
Astonishing Connection between Human and Animal
Health will present the keynote
address, “Species-Spanning
Medicine: the Promise of
Collaboration.”
The 3rd Annual Donkey Welfare Symposium
(November 6-8, 2015) will provide lectures and hands-on
laboratories to donkey owners in areas as diverse as
behavior, dentistry, & parasitology. Discussions about their
welfare in free-roaming populations and husbandry in

13 Easy Ways to
by Steve Milano
As a pet parent, you add many
bags, boxes, cartons and other
items to your waste cans as
your care for your furry friend.
Sure, you can recycle many of
these containers, but you also
have many other opportunities
to reduce the carbon footprint
associated with owning a pet.
With a little extra effort and
some creativity, you can keep
your pet – and the planet –
healthy and “green.”
GO GREEN
With Your Pet
Buy in Bulk
Packaging not only requires paper, plastic or other material,
it also uses energy to make the box, jug or carton. Buying in
bulk reduces the amount of packaging associated with pet
foods, litter and other items, and it also saves you money.
Decide what items you can buy in large quantities, determine
where you’ll store them and look into reusing boxes or
other containers to create an organized storage system
in the garage, basement or pantry.
Make
Natural Toys
Plastic squeaky toys
are fun for pets, but
your pooch or kitty
will probably be just as
happy with rag dolls,
string contraptions or
toys made from other
items you recycle. Take
some time to look
through your basement or garage to locate nontoxic items
you can use to make your own pet toys. A Google search for
“make natural pet toys” or “DIY pet toys” yields many fun
ideas.
Share “People Food” Leftovers
Many human foods aren’t healthy for animals, but some are.
Meet with your vet to find out what foods you can feed your
pets. Even if you collect just enough to eliminate two storebought meals per week, that’s more than 100 commercial
meals you don’t need to buy each year.
Regulate Feeding
Automatic food dispensers are helpful
for keeping pets fed when you can’t be at
home in time to put out food; however,
they also lead to health problems as pets
overeat. In addition they create more
demand for commercial pet food and the
packaging and energy that go with them.
14
JULY 2015 | CALIFORNIA PETS
Talk to your vet about a feeding schedule for your pet and the
amounts of food you should provide to determine if you can
get away without buying an auto feeder.
Add a Pet Door
Opening and closing large doors each time your pet needs
to leave the house lets cool air out and makes your air
conditioner work harder. Installing a pet door lets your pet
come and go as she pleases, reducing your energy bill. If
you’re concerned about security or other animals using the
door, purchase a pet door that’s activated by a chip or tag
worn by your dog or cat.
Improve Your Landscaping
Reducing the amount
of chemicals you apply
to your yard not only
helps the environment,
it makes the outdoors
safer for your pet. Flowers
attract helpful insects
that eliminate bugs that
attack gardens, lawns and
shrubs. This can decrease
the need for sprays and
other yard treatments.
Since pets tend to chew on plants, choose ones that might
provide some health benefits. PetMD.com recommends milk
thistle, peppermint, astragalus, garlic, rosemary, wheat berry
and barley grass.
Don’t Ditch the Electric Water Fountain
If you’re worried about the electricity needed
to run a water bowl with a fountain, remember
that these gadgets do more health good than
environmental harm. Cats, for example, are
feral animals and are attracted to the sound of
running water. When pets drink enough water,
it helps prevent dehydration, which can lead
to a variety of health issues, including skin
problems.
Please see next page
Walk to the Park
Many pet owners drive to the dog park. Even substituting
one drive per week for a longer walk can help. If your poochowning friends don’t want to make the walk, offer to give
them a lift, creating a “canine carpool.” You might have a
family member drop you off at the park on his or her way
to work or errands, letting you walk home.
problem in your pets. Use biodegradable poop bags
rather than picking up waste in plastic bags. Choose cat
litter made from organic materials. In addition to buying

Work With Local Retailers
Visit the pet stores in your area to see if they have any green
programs in their stores. It might be easier to work with an
independent retailer (as opposed to a national chain store
that has to answer to corporate) to suggest a green products
area or printed list of green products the store keeps at the
counter.

Shelters
Fewer pets require
less energy to feed
and care for them.
A litter of puppies of
kittens is always a treat
for families, but even if
you can find homes for
them, you put an additional strain on the environment when
thousands of abandoned pets are waiting in cages for a
good home.
Chip and Tag Your Pet
Donating items to
your local pet shelter
reduces the amount
of new products
shelters need to purchase. Shelters use blankets, towels,
washcloths, leashes, toys, food dispensers, fans, beds and
even newspapers to line cages. Ask local pet stores to a
product recycling bin that lets pet parents drop off used items
they would otherwise throw away. Don’t forget that shelters
are businesses with offices and might be able to use your
old desks, chairs, filing
cabinets, lamps, trash
bags and chair mats.
When a lost pet can’t be returned to its owner, it puts a
feeding, medicine and energy burden on shelters. Make sure
your pet is easily identifiable so it can be returned to you
Use Green Products
Green grooming and cleaning
products not only help the
environment, they’re also
less likely to cause an allergic
reaction or other health
quickly when someone finds it. Animal shelters scan every
lost pet they receive for a microchip, making this a secure
option (unlike a tag which can fall off).

TOXICITY OF THE MONTH
Blue-green Algae
Who is commonly affected: Dogs most commonly but all species can become intoxicated.
Where/When: Algae that blooms in water under certain environmental conditions (typically warm to hot periods) can produce toxins
that destroy the liver and nervous systems. All algal blooms are potentially toxic; however, there is no way to know by visual inspection.
Some common sites for algal blooms are backyard pools and water features, stagnant ponds, buckets of standing water, and even some
lakes and streams.
Toxic Principle: Microcystin is one toxic substance produced by blue-green algae that causes acute liver necrosis along with diarrhea,
vomiting, weakness, pale mucous membranes, and shock. Anatoxin-a primarily affects the nervous system giving the pet muscle tremors, salivation, paralysis, and rapid death. Luckily this is less commonly produced toxin. However, both intoxications have very poor
prognoses.
What to do: If your pet has any of these signs and symptoms, seek veterinary attention immediately. If the pet recently drank water
from one of these sources, you can bring a large sample of the brackish water with the suspected algae for analysis.
Prevention: Keep all water sources fresh and clean daily - especially outside water features. Prevent standing water in buckets, ponds,
and any catchments.
The above information is provided by Karl E. Jandrey, Associate Professor of Clinical Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care
Director, Center for Continuing Professional Education at the University of California, Davis. It is current as of publication time and
is NOT meant to be a replacement for timely and effective veterinary care. The Emergency Service at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital on the University of California, Davis campus is open 24/7 for questions and consultations. Call (530) 752-1393 or go to

what a
li fe save r!
pet insurance saves the day after a soggy seaside accident
With a name like Scamp, it’s no surprise that adventure is number one on this 6-year-old Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel’s wish list. In fact, his pet parents Tara and Felix have taken to calling him their adventure dog. But
they never imagined his thirst for thrills might take the California Cavvie out to sea — literally.
an ocean of trouble
Scamp became enamored by the sea shortly after his family
relocated to the Golden State. One morning, what started off
as a routine walk along the beach ended with Scamp being
pinned up against a berm by a powerful wave. Luckily, his dad
Felix managed to drag him out of the water before the current
took him out to sea. But Scamp’s ordeal was far from over.

Tara suspected aspiration pneumonia and rushed Scamp to the emergency
veterinarian, who confirmed it. After X-rays, a blood test, oxygen, IV fluids,
antibiotics and an overnight stay, the bill could have left Tara and Felix in the
red. But by the next morning, Scamp had stabilized and would make a full
recovery — and Petplan had picked up the tab for his treatment.
life’s a beach
Tara and Felix may have been caught off-guard by their misadventure, but
because Scamp was protected with pet insurance, they were able to say yes
to the treatment the veterinarian recommended without worrying about
what it might cost. After meeting their $100 deductible, Petplan reimbursed
Tara and Felix 90% of Scamp’s vet bill. “It could’ve been $2,000 or $10,000,
and we would’ve said yes,” says Tara. “It was such a relief to be able to focus
on him and not worry about the financial aspect.”
why pet insurance?
Pet health is unpredictable.
One in three pets needs
unexpected veterinary care
for an illness or injury
each year.1
Vet care can be expensive.
In fact, every six seconds a
pet parent is faced with a
bill over $3,000.2
It can save you thousands.
For a fixed monthly cost,
you can be covered for up to
$
22,000 annually. Now that’s
a lot of bones.
