North Central College Commencement One Hundred Fiftieth Commencement June 13, 2015 Ten O’Clock in the morning Residence Hall/Recreation Center President Troy D. Hammond D r. Troy D. Hammond became the 10th president of North Central College on January 1, 2013. Since then, North Central has continued to grow its enrollment and earn national recognition as a top-ranked college. To build on these successes, Hammond initiated the building of a new residence hall and launched the Brilliant Future Campaign with the construction of a new science center as its cornerstone. Hammond earned a Ph.D. in experimental atomic physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1996. He holds a variety of patents in materials science and technology and has published extensively about physics, nanotechnology, polymer electronics, solar power and other energy technologies. A native of Kokomo, Ind., Hammond graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in mathematics from Milligan College in 1989 and continues to value his undergraduate liberal arts experience. Hammond then earned a second undergraduate degree, a B.S. in physics from Georgia Tech. A prestigious National Science Foundation fellowship paved his way to the doctoral program at MIT. There Hammond met his wife Sharlene, who holds a chemistry degree from MIT and a master of science degree in nursing from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. After graduate school, Hammond served as associate principal at McKinsey & Company, a leading management consulting firm. He later joined Plextronics, Inc., and helped to build the small technology company into a global leader in printed electronics. He also taught in the M.B.A. program at Milligan College as an adjunct professor. Hammond served as president of the energy services business at BlueStar Energy in Chicago prior to joining North Central College. In 2013, Hammond was named one of 60 outstanding alumni of the National Science Foundation’s highly competitive Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Hammond and a handful of other GRFP alumni, including former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer, were chosen from among more than 46,500 Fellows to be honored for their professional accomplishments. #NCGrad2015 Residents of Naperville since 2010, Troy and Sharlene Hammond are parents of four children—Adonay, Dillon, Karina and Gabrielle—all students in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. Devadoss Pandian, Ph.D. President Emeritus Dr. Harold “Hal” R. Wilde, President Emeritus and Life Trustee of North Central College, became the ninth president of North Central College in 1991. During his tenure, the College saw a tenfold increase in its endowment, continuous balanced budgets, 100 percent growth in fulltime undergraduate enrollments, and the largest individual, corporate and foundation gifts and bequests in the College’s history. These gifts made possible 13 endowed faculty chairs and six Ruge Fellows, a 500 percent rise in scholarship support, 15 major construction projects and significant campus expansion. Under his leadership the College implemented its first comprehensive new curriculum in 30 years and broadened its commitment to international programming, servicelearning, interdisciplinary studies and sustainability. Wilde’s legacy will always be the building of a healthy endowment, nurturing great teaching and student achievement, transforming the campus with modern facilities and a strong vision for enrollment and student life. Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Dr. R. Devadoss Pandian, who today becomes professor of mathematics and dean of faculty emeritus, has served North Central College as a mathematics professor and as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty for 30 years. Among his many accomplishments are the hiring of more than 75 percent of the current faculty and supporting top teaching, scholarship, recognition and self-governance; encouraging research for students in all disciplines and graduate school preparation; advocating for a foreign language requirement, new academic programs and program review; and establishing a “Verandah” culture that promotes interaction between faculty and students outside the classroom. As a result of these initiatives, in 2015 North Central College earned recognition as a top producer of Fulbright scholars and consistently receives honors for students by the national Goldwater Scholarship program. Pandian began his career in a one-room school in India and went on to receive degrees from Madras University and Madurai University in mathematics. He earned a doctorate from George Washington University in 1983. He joined the College in 1985 as associate professor of mathematics, became professor in 1989 and served as Science Division chair. During his career, he earned the College’s Dissinger Award for development of teaching (1985) and for outstanding teaching by a senior faculty member (1995). He also received a Burlington-Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award in 1990. Wilde continues to be involved in leadership roles with higher education-related organizations, including Educational & Institutional Insurance Administrators (EIIA) and Bottomline-Chicago, which helps low-income and first-generation-to-college students get to and through college. Wilde received his undergraduate degree with high honors from Amherst College and a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University. A native of Wisconsin, he served several years in Wisconsin state government, including four as insurance commissioner. He was special assistant to the president of the University of Wisconsin System and vice president for external relations at Beloit College, where he served before being named North Central College’s president. He and his wife Priscilla are the parents of two adult children, Satyan ’93 and Divya ’95, both mathematics professors, and grandparents of six grandchildren. He is married to Benna Brecher Wilde and they are the parents of three adult children (Anna, Henry and Elizabeth) and grandparents of six grandchildren. Walters chaired the department and served as its graduate program coordinator; she also chaired the College Scholars Committee. A strong advocate for internationalizing the campus, she held a position on the International Programs Committee and led two student study abroad terms in Costa Rica. Walters coauthored (with North Central College professor Godfrey Muganda) a textbook and lab manual used worldwide. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in French from the University of Iowa and master of science degree in computer science at Illinois Institute of Technology. Aw a r d s The Gael D. Swing Award for Meritorious Service The Mark A. Reid Leadership Award The North Central College Gael D. Swing Award for Meritorious Service was established in tribute to the eighth president of North Central College, who died in 1990 just one month before completing his 15th year as president. Under President Swing’s leadership, the College substantially improved its physical facilities and financial condition while nearly tripling its enrollment; gained regional and national recognition for the quality of its academic programs, its faculty and its students; and instituted the Leadership, Ethics and Values Program. The Swing Award is presented at Commencement to recognize alumni, trustees and friends of North Central College whose service to the institution exemplifies the quality and integrity that were hallmarks of Gael D. Swing’s distinguished tenure as president of North Central College. The Mark A. Reid Leadership Award is named in honor of a young man who died in an automobile accident in 1984 during his term as president of the North Central College Student Association. The recipient of this annual award is determined by a vote of the senior class. It is presented to a student at Commencement who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability, served prominently as a positive influence in student affairs, encouraged active involvement of others in the life of the College community, and exemplified the qualities of citizenship associated with Mark A. Reid. The Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College Award The Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College Award was created to recognize, at Commencement a member of the North Central College “family”—faculty, staff or student—who exemplifies the best of the College. Established in 1992, the award honors a “unique spirit and legacy” at North Central College, that of longtime editors and publishers of The Naperville Sun, the late Harold and Eva White, both graduates of the Class of 1935. #NCGrad2015 Harold and Eva White displayed a special spirit and citizenship in the community and on campus. Through their caring editorship of The Naperville Sun over more than a half century, their philanthropy and their generosity of spirit, they shaped what is great about North Central College and Naperville. Eva White was a member of North Central College’s Board of Trustees for 16 years and served as board secretary from 1986 until her death in 1990. She received an honorary doctor of letters degree in 1987. Harold White, who was named a North Central College Outstanding Alumnus in 1975, was awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree by the College in 1977 and was named an honorary trustee of the College in 1991. He passed away in 1993. The 2015 Dissinger Memorial Awards The Clarence F. Dissinger and Ruth C. Dissinger Memorial Awards are funded by endowments established by Dr. Carl ’21 and Ruth Dissinger ’22 Althaus in memory of her brother, a member of the Class of 1921, and later by Dr. Althaus in memory of his wife. Awards are made to faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves in teaching, scholarship and service “over and above the call of duty.” North Central College wishes to further recognize these outstanding educators and administrators. Most robes were black to symbolize the democracy of scholarship, since they covered any dress indicating rank or social standing. Sashes embroidered with international flags are being worn by students who either come from that country or have studied there while enrolled at North Central College. In addition, the flags next to the stage represent the home countries of international students who are graduating today or who studied this academic year at North Central. Brazil Bulgaria Canada Chile China Costa Rica Ecuador El Salvador Ethiopia Three levels of academic achievement are represented by different types of gowns today. Successful completion of the bachelor’s degree is symbolized by the bachelor’s gown, made of black material with long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is black and is identified by its oblong sleeve, square at the end and sealed. Although some universities prescribe a solid color such as red or green for doctoral gowns, most in the United States are black. Doctoral gowns have vertical stripes of velvet trim on each front facing, and crossbars of velvet on the sleeves. This trim may be black, or it may match the edging of the hood, which indicates the profession or field of major interest. These gowns have bell-shaped sleeves. The length and shape of the academic hood, and the width of its velvet edging, identify the level of the degree the wearer has earned, while the color of the velvet edging indicates the field or discipline in which the degree was granted. “College Scholar” is a recognition awarded to those North Central students who have completed the College Scholars Honors Program, a rigorous curriculum that culminates in the completion of a senior honors thesis. A solid gold honor cord symbolizes the “excellence through community” that is this program’s motto. In addition, select North Central College students have been inducted into national honor societies. The following lists the cord colors. For formal processions, members of North Central’s Board of Trustees traditionally wear doctoral gowns and hoods with a red and white lining to represent the College. The gown and hood worn by President Troy D. Hammond reflect his doctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Cardinal red and silver gray, the official school colors of MIT, also appear in his headwear. The dark blue velvet trim on the hood signifies the color of his Ph.D. Caps, generally mortarboards with tassels, have their own significance. Some international degree holders wear special hats distinctive to their degree and institution. Master’s and bachelor’s tassels are black, while the doctorate tassel may be black or gold. The doctoral cap may be made of velvet. Those North Central College students wearing gold tassels on their caps today are graduating with honors— cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude. #NCGrad2015 The North Central College seal was designed in 1925 for Pfeiffer Hall to symbolize North Central’s early academic tradition: religion, signified by the lamp, and learning, represented by the book. The words “lux” and “veritas” mean “light” and “truth” in Latin. Poland Portugal Russia Rwanda Sweden United Kingdom United States Uzbekistan Vietnam Honor Cords Because members of the North Central College faculty completed their graduate work at many different educational institutions in this country and abroad, there will be a variety of raiment in today’s procession. Some degree holders wear no hood because their academic robe itself symbolizes the degree awarded.
