He guides me along the right paths for the sake of His name…Psalm 23: 1-3 This is an excerpt from an article “The Catechesis of the Good Shephard — A Way of Experiencing God” by Barbara Matera. The Call When God called Abraham, asking him to go to “a land that I will show you,” the man of faith left everything he knew and followed. Like Abraham, the founders of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi - left the comfort and familiarity of lives they had led in response to a call. Their call came not from heaven or a burning bush - it came from a group of children. - Barbara Matera is the coordinator of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. John Neumann Parish, Pittsburgh, PA. CDs are $15 plus $3 for shipping. Someone once told me that people come to church on Palm Sunday because they get something. But I like to think that palm says something they recognize as true. “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness,” writes Paul, quoting the words of an early Christian hymn. “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross,” follow soon after (Philippians 2:7, 8). Emptying and humbling are the two key words embracing the trajectory of the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God: from incarnation to passion and death. “He poured himself out for us and for our salvation, certainly suffering physically—from the beating, the scourging, the crowning with thorns, being struck with a reed, spat upon, prodded, pushed, and stumbling up the hill to Golgotha. Then he was stretched out on a crossbeam, nailed to it, and lifted up, his body suspended between heaven and earth. Finally, he suffocated, unable to raise himself to take in more air. There was also the inner suffering of abandonment, of seeing his disciples run off, of realizing that all those who had cried “Hosanna” a few days earlier had either been silent or had cried out, “Crucify him.” Only the women had remained with him. Today, when we take home a piece of palm, it invites us to prepare to renew our baptismal promises on Easter. Then we can add our voices to that solitary voice almost two millennia ago, saying, “Truly, this is the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39). —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Good Friday Collection. Every year, on Good Friday, each parish in the United States takes up a collection for the Holy Land, as designated by the Holy Father. This collection helps support the work of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. The collection provides pastoral care for parishes in the Holy Land, housing and health care for the poor and elderly, care of the shrines and chapels, welcome for pilgrims and schools, often at no charge to the students. The second collection next weekend is for Holy Redeemer by the Sea Sound System Upgrade. Please contact the parish office, (252) 261-4700, if you would like to receive your 2014 contribution statement. Please allow 3 days lead time. Thank you. Living God’s Word Loving God, lift up our hearts to give you thanks and praise for all you have done for us through the saving death of your Son. We sing out in our day, “Blessed is he who continues to come in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Studies now show that a helping spirit brings with it both physical and emotional benefits. This research, regarding the health benefits of “helping,” provides even more compelling health reasons to get yourself involved and reach out to those in need. According to researchers at UCLA, giving day-to-day help is good for you and can protect the helper’s health. “Helper’s High” is the term coined by Arizona State University psychologist Robert Cialdini to describe the euphoria reported by frequent givers in his research. These good feelings can lower the output of stress hormones, which improves cardiovascular health and strengthens the immune system. After our In-Pew weekend, we were able to send a total of $10 thousand dollars in pledges to Raleigh, and they will soon be reflected in our overall total. Raleigh is already in receipt of more than $32 thousand dollars toward our goal of $75 thousand dollars. With our in pew pledges, we will be a little more than halfway to our goal. However, only 20% of our parish households have participated. Please, respond to the Bishop’s request as soon as possible, so that we can all share this work of mercy in the name of Jesus. Thank you. PROPHETIC ANOINTING — The solemnity of today’s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are acknowledged in her prophetic anointing. Copyright © J. S. Easter Vigil The Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 4, will begin at the Lumen Christi Brazier on the front lawn of the Church at 8:00 pm, with lighting of the Easter Fire. This observance culminates the Triduum, the holiest days of our Catholic Tradition. At this Mass, we recall the history of our Salvation, beginning with the Easter Proclamation and several readings from the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. The singing of the Gloria and Alleluia, absent for all Sundays of Lent, ends our time of penitence, and summons forth our joy as an Easter People. The night is rich with symbolism and ritual. Truly, "this is the night when Christians everywhere, washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement, are restored to grace and grow together in holiness." Please join our celebration. (NB, Given the depth of the experience, this Mass tends to last longer than a traditional Sunday Mass, perhaps about 2 hours. Families with small children may find this challenging. Mass will also be celebrated on Easter Sunday at 7, 9 and 11:30 AM, at both Holy Redeemer by the Sea Church, and Holy Trinity by the Sea Catholic Chapel, to offer everyone a convenient time to worship.) At the Easter Vigil our parish will welcome 5 new Catholics to our church. Congratulations to: Melissa Felthousen Dan and Ann Broadhead Tim Grauer Greg Pinckard Holy Redeemer by the Sea 7 What Is...…Salesian Spirituality? It is a way of living the Gospel as learned, lived and shared by St. Francis de Sales (1567 – 1622) and St. Jane de Chantal (1572 – 1641). Its first disciples were the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary, a community of contemplative women established by these two saints in 1610. Their vision continues today, lived by people of all walks, states and stages of life. One cannot hope to adequately plumb the depths of this spirituality in a brief pamphlet. What follows are some of the more salient features of Salesian spirituality. God is love, and all creation is an outpouring of that love. All creation has been made for Christ, with Christ and through Christ. All creation should be treated with respect and care. Jesus is the model for all fully human living. You possess divine dignity and are thus worthy of profound respect. God has testified that you are good, worthy of divine love and mercy. Despite your weakness and sinfulness, God loves you so much that God sent his only son to become human. You are called to be holy, that is, to grow in union with God. Pursuing a holy life is called “devotion,” that is, doing what is both commanded and counseled by God promptly, actively and diligently. The pursuit of holiness must be practical. It must transform your attitudes, attributes and actions. Acknowledge your sins and failing, learn from them, but do not dwell on them. God gives you talents and abilities, gifts that should be discovered, developed and used for the good of others. Relationships are essential to living a fully human, that is, a holy life. Each moment of each day comes from the hand of a loving God and is graced for your salvation. The only time you have is each present moment. Don’t live in the past; don’t dwell on the future. Living each moment to the fullest with an eye to loving God must lead you to show compassion for others. The challenge of each moment is discerning God’s will, that is, the particular, unique way that God may be calling you to love God, yourself, and others. God’s will is frequently communicated through the events, circumstances and relationships in which you find yourself. God seldom requires you to perform great or extraordinary feats, but God always challenges you to perform everyday actions with extraordinary attention and enthusiasm. The “little virtues” of patience, humility, gentleness, simplicity, honesty and hospitality are powerful means for growing holy. All prayer and meditation must lead to action. The motivation with which you perform some action may be far more important and powerful than the action itself. Freedom is one of the most precious and powerful gifts that God gives you. You are to use that freedom to grow in conformity to God’s will. Intellectual learning, prayerful reflection, social interaction, work, play and all things creative should be valued as graced by God and viewed as means for growing into a fully human person. Each new day is a new beginning, a new opportunity for growing in holiness. Let your passion be disciplined. Let your discipline be passionate.Keep things in perspective. Develop a sense of humor. Welcome to Salesian spirituality! May it help you to become a holy, whole, human person. May it enable you to “Live Jesus,” to allow Jesus to live in you and to love through you. Volume 1 Number 0 Salesian Perspectives, www.oblates.org/spirituality The Triduum - Our High Holy Days Lent officially ends not on Easter, but on Wednesday April 1. On April 2 we begin the celebration of The Triduum (Latin for 3 days) which are the holiest days of our Catholic tradition. Please consider joining your faith community at these special Liturgies as we approach the great feast of Easter. On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. We also wash each other’s feet as a sign of our willingness to serve as Jesus served. The Mass begins at 7:00 pm. From the end of Mass until midnight, the Blessed Sacrament remains in repose, giving us the rare opportunity of silent Eucharistic Adoration. On Holy Friday as you arrive for Liturgy at 7:00 pm, you will find the Church stripped of all decor; even the large crucifix behind the altar will be gone, as will all holy water. Our observance will include the reading of the Passion, the veneration of the Cross, and the reception of the Eucharist consecrated on Holy Thursday (known as the Pre Sanctified). Our prayers of the faithful are also special that day, remembering not only our own needs and the needs of the Church but also asking God's blessings on the Jewish people and unbelievers as well. We depart in a solemn silence which represents the silence in the tomb of the Crucified Christ. On Holy Saturday, at noon, you are invited to bring a sample of the food for Easter Dinner for a special blessing; we begin the Easter Vigil at 8:00 pm on the front lawn of the Church. There, we will light a new fire in the Lumen Christi Brazier, the light of which will be carried into our darkened Church. Illuminated only by candlelight, we proclaim the Exsultet, an ancient hymn remembering the agony of the death of God's son, and the expectant hope we have of his ultimate triumph. Then, still in darkness, we read from the Hebrew Scriptures the story of their journey as God's chosen ones, which is our journey too. Finally, brightness fills the Church along with our voices resounding once again with "Glory to God in the Highest". Our readings move on to Saint Paul and to Saint Matthew's account of the Resurrection of Jesus. He has conquered sin and death for each one of us! Due to the many facets of the Easter Vigil Liturgy (it will also include the Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation of new Catholics), it will last about two hours. This may be challenging for families with young children. So that all may celebrate Easter at a comfortable time, Mass is also scheduled for 7:00, 9:00 and 11:30 am on Easter Sunday morning, at both Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, and at Holy Trinity by the Sea Catholic Chapel in Nags Head. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Is today “Palm Sunday” or “Passion Sunday”? Though now known officially as Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, confusion is understandable, since before the 1969 reform of the calendar two separate Sundays bore these titles. Passion Sunday was a week before Palm Sunday. To add to the confusion, the Gospel accounts of the Passion of the Lord were not read on Passion Sunday, but on Palm Sunday! On Passion Sunday, the cross and statues were veiled in full purple drapes. The organ had fallen silent at the beginning of Lent, and now the sanctuary bells were replaced by wooden clappers. The introit (opening chant) for the old Mass of Passion Sunday hints at a reason for reform: “Do me justice, O God, and fight my fight against a faithless people” (Psalm 42). This liturgy was laden with references to the “infidelity” of the Jews, a theme that gave rise to inflammatory preaching and, in some places, attacks against the persons and property of the Jewish people. This does not stand as a “treasure” of any sort in our tradition. Our authentic tradition, rather, is the ability to reflect and repent and to seek reconciliation with the Jews, our brothers and sisters in the love and service of God. —Rev.
