GroundWorks DanceTheater to Present World-Premiere Works at Inaugural Series
with University of Akron at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron
GroundWorks DanceTheater will debut two new
works as part of the company’s inaugural series
at EJ Thomas Hall’s Contemporary Performance
Series on March 5th & 6th, 2015. This series is
the centerpiece of GroundWorks’ month-long
University of Akron creative residency, which
aims to grow the dance community throughout
Akron. These performances will comprise three
works including House of Sparrows, Untitled and
Current Frame.
The world-premiere of House of Sparrows,
choreographed by Executive Artistic Director
David Shimotakahara. This work is the
culmination of an exciting collaboration between
GroundWorks DanceTheater, New York-based
Aeolus Quartet, Austin-based composer Steven
Snowden & New York-based Nic Petry of Dancing
Camera. New music by Snowden & choreography
by GroundWorks’ artistic director David
Shimotakahara will explore themes of the Civil
War to commemorate its sesquicentennial in 2014
& 2015. The piece will be set in scenes inspired by
letters & photographs illustrating the upheaval
of domestic life during the Civil War. The
artistic concept will avoid traditional narratives
depicting battle & glory, choosing instead to
explore individual experiences & stories. The
display of these individual portraits will leave
the interpretation to the audience & encourage
audiences to re-examine the far-reaching impact
of the Civil War on our present day society.
The world-premiere of Untitled, choreographed
by Artist-in-Residence Robert Moses. Since
founding Robert Moses’ Kin in 1995 in San
Francisco, choreographer Robert Moses has
created numerous works of varying styles &
genres for his highly praised dance company. His
work explores topics ranging from oral traditions
in African American culture (Word of Mouth,
2002), the life, times, & work of author James
Baldwin (Biography of Baldwin, 2003), & the
dark side of contemporary urban culture (Cause,
2004), to the nuanced complexities of parentage
& identity (The Cinderella Principle, 2010), &
the simple joys of the expressive power of pure
movement (Toward September, 2009).
2
A reprise of Current Frame, choreographed by
Artistic Director Amy Miller (in collaboration
with Kathryn Wells Taylor, Gary Lenington, Felise
Bagley & Damien Highfield)
This work – a duet performed with live solo
violin – explores the dramatic interplay between
the formal structures of Baroque composer
Biber’s Passacaglia violin solo & the emotional
undercurrent found in response to the music’s
themes & cadences. Current Frame premiered
in August 2012 at the Heinz Poll Summer Dance
Festival in Akron, Ohio.
Amy Miller has a long-standing relationship with
the City of Akron. She received her training at the
Dance Institute of the University of Akron & at
the Joffrey Ballet School. Miller performed with
the dance project New Steps from 1991-1997 &
was a member of Ohio Ballet from 1991-2001. A
founding member of GroundWorks DanceTheater,
she has created eleven works for the company
including eleveneleven (2006) composed by New
York composer/musician Ryan Lott (aka Son Lux),
& Allow (2008) composed by Oberlin College
graduate Alex Christie. Valence (2009) was created
in collaboration with Oberlin College professor
Peter Swendsen from the renowned TIMARA
School (Technology in Music & the Related Arts.)
Since 2008, she has been commissioned to create
works for Cleveland’s Dance/Theater Collective,
as well as the dance programs of Bowling Green
State University & the University of Akron. She
holds a BFA in Dance from the University of
Akron & was voted 2009 Outstanding Artist in
Dance by the Akron Area Arts Alliance. Miller’s
choreography earned a 2010 Ohio Arts Council
Individual Excellence Award.
Since relocating to New York City in 2010, she has
performed with David Parker & The Bang Group,
jill sigman/thinkdance, Gibney Dance & in the
work of Lynne Taylor-Corbett, & appeared in the
Metropolitan Opera’s upcoming production of
Don Giovanni. Amy now holds the position of
Associate Artistic Director at Gibney Dance.

Toledo Ballet Founder to Win Governor’s Award
Toledo Ballet Founder and Artistic Director Emerita Marie Bollinger Vogt
will be the recipient of the prestigious Ohio Arts Council’s Governor’s Award
for the Arts in Ohio at the annual ceremony in Columbus May 13, 2015. Winners are selected in six categories: Arts Administration, Arts Education, Arts
Patron, Business Support of the Arts, Community Development and Participation, and Individual Artist. Mrs. Vogt will receive the award for Arts Administration. “The Governor’s Awards are coveted by arts organizations, corporations, schools, and individuals alike,” explained Toledo Ballet executive
director Mari Davies. “It makes perfect sense that this extraordinary woman
wins; she utilized an impressive balance of business savvy and passion for
dance to pioneer an organization that is now seventy five years old. I am
thrilled this jewel from northwest Ohio is being recognized this year.”
The award ceremony, held at the Columbus Athenaeum, is followed by an
Arts Day Luncheon hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation.
When asked her reaction to the news of her winning this award, Mrs. Vogt responded, “I am extremely
honored to be included among distinguished area honorees from the past.”
Mrs. Vogt founded Toledo Ballet in 1939 and in 1941 produced her first Nutcracker. It is now the longest consecutively running annual Nutcracker in the entire country. She continues to sit on the organization’s board of directors.
Toledo Ballet School offers the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, an
8-level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child
development. In addition to ballet, TB offers an extensive contemporary division as well as health and
fitness classes, pilates and yoga. Toledo Ballet, a non-profit organization, has as its mission “to promote interest in dance through premiere education, outreach and performances.” For more information, go to toledoballet.org or call 419.471.0049.
Special Volunteer Opportunity!
Columbus,OH
Ohio Citizens for the Arts is seeking volunteers to
participate as chaperones in our Student Advocates
program during the 2015 Arts Day activities. This is a
chance to hone your advocacy skills and help mentor
high school students as they visit with state legislators
and share their personal testimonies about the value
of arts education.
The role of the chaperone is to help the student
advocates locate the offices of the legislators they
will be assigned to visit, make sure they distribute the
materials given to them for the legislative meetings,
keep them on schedule, and escort them to the
Columbus Athenaeum on time for the Governor’s
Awards for the Arts in Ohio and Arts Day luncheon.
All of the visits and the luncheon are within walking
distance of the Ohio Statehouse.
Each volunteer will be assigned two-four students to
chaperone. They will meet the students during the
Arts Day Advocacy Briefing at 9:30 a.m. on May 13th at
the Capitol Theatre in the Riffe Center for Government
and the Arts in downtown Columbus. During this
time, the chaperone will be able to get to know the
students, review the schedule for legislative visits,
receive materials for distribution and participate in
the advocacy briefing. Following the briefing, the
chaperone will check-in with the students to make sure
they are prepared to provide their brief testimonies.
This is also a good time for the chaperone to help
manage expectations by making sure the students
understand that the legislators are very busy so they
may be speaking to an aide, or even just leaving the
materials for the legislator to review at a later time.
All legislative visits will take place between 10:30 and
11:30 a.m.
Since it’s the job of the chaperone to guide the
students through the Riffe Center and/or the
Statehouse, maps will be provided along with specific
instructions about the legislative visits. Most of
the student advocates are not from Columbus, so
it’s important for the chaperone to make them feel
welcome and ensure that they have a good time!
If you would like to serve as a student advocate
chaperone, please contact Shoshanna Gross at

Do I Need a Multivitamin?
Shannon Sterne, MS MA RDN, Assistant Professor, Department of Dance
College of Arts and Sciences, Case Western Reserve University
Multivitamin and mineral (MVM) pills are the most commonly used dietary supplements. They are sometimes
recommended as “insurance” to improve peace of mind that all micronutrient needs are being met. But are they
really necessary? And are they safe?
Supplementation with MVM pills is of particular importance when the variety or quantity of food intake is limited.
Dancers may limit food intake to achieve and maintain low body weights for aesthetic purposes. Sometimes,
even dancers who are unconcerned about weight experience reduced appetite. Others may have difficulty making time to eat well-balanced meals with their busy schedules. And prior to performances, some dancers avoid
eating certain foods or food groups to avoid feeling bloated or heavy while performing. Additionally, picky eaters,
individuals on weight-loss diets, and those who eliminate entire food groups (such as vegetarians and vegans)
may be at risk of certain nutrient deficiencies. Each of these scenarios can result in inadequate food intake to
meet vitamin and mineral needs, and supplementation with a MVM may be a good way to make up for potential
shortfalls.
Which MVM is right for me?
Most people do not need to take a MVM every day. Taking a daily MVM every other day is sufficient for most
healthy individuals. Petite-sized MVM pills are also available providing 100% of the Daily alue of most nutrients
in a 2 pill serving size. These smaller sized pills are easier to swallow, and are also a good option for people who
experience nausea after taking a MVM.
One of the most important things to look for in a MVM is the balance of nutrients. You want your MVM to contain:
100% of the Daily Value of vitamins D, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B12, and folic acid
at least 20 micrograms of vitamin K
no more than 3000 IU of vitamin A
100% of the Daily Value of copper, zinc, iodine, selenium, and chromium
100% of the Daily Value for iron (if you are premenopausal; postmenopausal women and men typically do not
need iron supplementation)
Be aware that MVM pills will not contain 100% of the Daily Value for calcium. Getting enough calcium in the diet
can be challenging for many dancers, and taking a separate calcium supplement may be warranted in addition to
a MVM.
Do I need a special MVM formula?
Many special MVM formulas are available including prenatal formulations and pills for men, women, athletes,
and seniors. Some of these pills contain a proprietary blend of added herbs and food extracts. While these may
seem exotic, and the companies may tout the benefits of these added ingredients, most of them are not present
in sufficient amounts to yield any benefits. Save your money and choose a simple, balanced formula.
Are MVM supplements safe?
The short answer is “yes,” however, there are some circumstances that can raise concern over the use of MVM
supplements. Vitamins and minerals are frequently added to food and beverage products. The combined intake
of a MVM and food or beverages with high doses of added vitamins and minerals can increase the risk of toxicity
from certain nutrients. High doses of singular nutrients can also create problems in the body’s absorption and utilization of other nutrients. For example, iron and calcium compete for absorption and should be taken at separate
times of the day.
Consultation with a registered dietitian is the best way to determine if an individualized supplementation plan is
needed, but taking a MVM on a regular basis can cover many nutrient needs with little risk. It is important, however, to remember that MVM supplements cannot substitute for a healthy, balanced diet, and taking a MVM does
not mean you can pay less attention to your diet. Foods – particularly fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, and
whole grains – provide a variety of important nutrients not available in pill form.

Dance Health
Working out the Kinks
Mariah Nierman, PT, DPT, AT, OCS
So now that the year is well underway and the weather is getting colder, you are probably starting to
feel the nearly constant achy tightness that comes along with that. The amount to which you use and
abuse your body as a performing athlete, plus your typical amounts of walking around and periods of
static sitting, builds up restrictions in the myofascial network in your body. To address this you need to
do BOTH myofascial release (rolling out) and stretching.
Myofascial release is different from stretching. Stretching acts to actually lengthen the muscle itself so
that it can contract and relax through a larger arc of motion. Myofascial release “un-sticks” the different
layers of fascia that wrap your muscles and form a fibrous network throughout your body; it does not
actually “stretch” the muscle. When you perform myofascial release, the fascia that wraps the muscles
is loosened and released so the muscles can slide and glide past each other and work efficiently to
move your body so you can dance the combinations and choreography necessary and get more benefit
from your stretching.
You can use foam rollers, body release balls and even tennis balls to roll out your muscles. Focus the
pressure on the soft tissues and not on bony prominences. During the session of myofascial release
be sure to get all parts of the muscle but concentrate the pressure where you feel the most tight and
tender. You should roll out at minimum 3 times a week. If you’d like to learn more join us Sunday April
26th at the OhioDance Festival for a Myofascial Release class.
IT Band – Lie on your side with the foam roller along the outer thigh. Use
your arm and opposite leg to support your body weight. Roll gently up and
down your outer thigh over the IT band for 2-3 minutes. Make sure you
reach the entire length of the thigh.
Gastroc & Soleus – Place tennis ball under calf muscle. Use your arms
and opposite leg to support your body weight and roll up and down
over the tennis ball. Make sure you reach all parts of the muscle, top/
bottom, in/out, but avoid the Achilles tendon. Perform for 2-3 minutes
each leg.
Glutes & Rotators – Place body release ball or tennis ball under one
side of your buttock, support your weight on your hands or elbows.
Again, be sure to reach all parts of the muscle(s), top/bottom, side to
side, rotate the leg on the side you are rolling out to find & feel the
deep rotators moving under the ball’s pressure. Perform for 2-3 minutes each side.

When Dancers Should Collide
Sara Hutchins Jodka, Senior Counsel - Data Privacy and Labor and Employment
MCDONALD HOPKINS LLC, Columbus
Dancers and lawsuits have been paired together in the news a lot recently. Most recently, Fernando
Sosa, who 3-D prints and sells politically-themed sculptures, chose to go apolitical and starting printing
and selling sculptures of the “Left Shark” – the shark last seen dancing awkwardly and out of step
behind Katy Perry at the Super Bowl. Perry’s lawyers were quick to send a cease and desist letter to
Sosa demanding he stop selling the products and turn over any products. Her lawyers claimed the Left
Shark image belonged to Perry and could not be reproduced without her permission.
Earlier, Abby Lee Miller, the star of Lifetime’s Dance Moms, was sued for assault by a former student
who claimed she feared she would be physically injured because she had observed Miller physically
batter other people on the show.
It certainly makes sense to retain a lawyer when sued; however, there are other instances to retain a
lawyer proactively. For dancers, choreographers, or studio owners, here is a sampling of some of those
instances:
Business/Tax – A dancer looking to open his or her own studio/business should consult a business
lawyer to determine the best way to structure i.e., incorporate the business for tax and businesses
purposes. The lawyer can help find and negotiate the real estate for the studio and can prepare and
file all necessary business filings with the appropriate Secretary of States office. The attorney can also
assist with tax preparation and filing if qualified. This lawyer can also serve as the statutory agent for
the newly-formed company in order to receive legal service of process on behalf of the company.
Employment – A business owner would be wise to work closely with an employment law attorney to
ensure that they are properly paying their employees; that they have the proper workplace notices
posted; that they are in line with all the requirements for unemployment and workers’ compensation;
that proper releases are obtained for images, workplace safety, and other items; and that they have the
proper contracts, policies, and procedures in place to ensure compliance with all applicable federal,
state, and local laws, of which there are many.
Personal Injury – Dancers are engaged in strenuous physical activity and sometimes get injured. When
this happens, it may be important to contact a personal injury attorney in order to properly recover for
any damages to the extent they are not covered by workers’ compensation.
Copyright/Intellectual Property – Some pieces of choreographed material may be copyrighted in order
to protect them from commercial reproduction. This is a very specialized area of copyright/intellectual
property law, but there are lawyers that can assist dancers in copyrighting their original choreographed
dances.
Privacy - In some instances a dancer may find his or her image has been misappropriated and used in
commercial materials i.e., advertisements without their consent and/or without proper compensation. If
this happens, a dancer should consult an attorney who works with privacy rights
Data Privacy – Any business owner that accepts credit cards and/or that collects personality identifiable
information on customers or employees should consult with a data privacy attorney to ensure that they
are properly security personality identifiable information and that they have an incident response plan
in place in the event of a data breach.
Agent – Some lawyers forego the typical practice of law to be talent agents. This can include
representing dancers and choreographers. Dancers or choreographers who need help negotiating work
contracts, endorsement deals, etc., may consider hiring a talent agent who has experience representing
dancers to ensure proper representation at the bargaining table.
There are many other instances when a dancer, choreographer, or studio owner may need to consult
with an attorney. Find one you trust and that you are comfortable working with. An attorney can be a
tremendous asset to your business and career.
