The Parishioners of Our Lady of
the Lake would like to recognize
and honor all the devoted
teachers of our school.
The Traveling Crib Returns
to Our Lady of the Lake!
Our teachers at OLL have the
enormous responsibility of imparting knowledge to our children.
However, their responsibilities do
not end there. Not only do they expand their students intellectual capability but also, teach them how
to become better citizens and guide
them into a deeper and richer faith.
Teachers of OLL, we can’t ever
thank you enough!
A Prayer for Teachers
Heavenly Father, who promised that
all those who instruct others in the
ways of holiness will shine as stars for
all eternity, fill our hearts and minds
with true knowledge and the art of
teaching. Give us patience and understanding, justice and prudence, humility and fear of the Lord. Grant us
wisdom and charity so that with a pure
and holy love of God we ourselves may
enjoy all these gifts and impart them
to our pupils. Teach our children to
be obedient to your laws and docile to
your inspirations. Let them be instruments of your peace in their homes, in
our land, and in the family of nations
as becomes children of the sons of God
in the Mystical Body of Christ. May
the blessings of your sevenfold Gifts be
in all who teach and in all who learn
through the Holy Spirit who is the Love
of the Father and the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
St. John Bosco ~ Patron Saint of Teachers
Fifth Sunday of Easter
The Traveling Crib will be here during the month of May to collect baby
items and maternity supplies for Pregnancy Support Services at Catholic
Charities. This is a practical way we can assist women facing difficult situations, who have said “YES” to new life. Last year, Pregnancy Support
Services supported over 275 women and their babies with diapers, clothes,
counseling, parenting and relationship education classes, rent, and utility
assistance.
Items that are most needed at
this time include larger sized
diapers, diaper wipes, maternity
clothes, strollers, high chairs,
and pack-n-plays. There will be
a complete list of needed items
next to the crib, along with preaddressed envelopes if you prefer to make a monetary gift.
For more information call Catholic Charities at 503-238-5196.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity and partnership
in this life-affirming ministry!

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says they have faith
but does not have works?” - (James 2:14)
Take this opportunity to live your faith and join your fellow parishioners
in our Annual Day of Service on Saturday May 30. Last year over 250
parishioners went out to
volunteer at local ministries
and agencies. This year we
hope for even more. We will
be going to many of the
same ministries, plus some
new ones, so there are many
choices of what you can do.
There are opportunities for
both young and old. To find
out more and to sign up, go

Awakening Faith — Reconnecting with Your Catholic Faith Program
Draws Upon Conversation and Sharing Among Catholics
The Returning Catholics Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake Church invites inactive or semi-active Catholics to come together to discuss their faith. The Awakening Faith program employs a model of structured conversations to build bonding
between people. The resulting bonds help them see their connection to their Catholic faith. Dynamics of sharing in an open and confidential way, with a strong
welcome and hospitality, reinforce the sense of connection…and re-connection.
“Awakening Faith” sessions run for six consecutive Wednesday evenings. Four additional weeks are optional and may
be added later. Meetings are held Wednesday evenings in the
Parish Library of the Parish Center, 650 A. Avenue, 7:00 PM
to 8:30 PM. There is no fee.

OLL SCHOOL NEWS ~ Joan Codd
Third Grade
Urban Tour
The annual trek to downtown
Portland was made by our third
graders recently. As usual, they returned enthusiastic and full of fun
facts and amazing experiences.
Many of them reported marveling
at the view from the “high” building (Federal Building), seeing
and learning about the numerous
statues representing important figures in our nation’s or Portland’s
history, and learning about the architectural designs used in many
of the downtown buildings. The
“Benson Bubbler” also captured
their attention as did the weather
box and the echo chamber. Several students were curious about
the contents of the cornerstone of
the church. They were also interested to learn that early residents
flipped a coin to decide the name
of the city. It was a field trip all
enjoyed!
OLL Welcomes

the world will be celebrating Mass
on this day to honor our mothers and
women of Notre Dame, including
our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of the

Rediscover Your Marriage
Retrouvaille simply means ‘rediscovery.’ This program offers the chance
to rediscover yourself, your spouse,
and a loving relationship in your
marriage. So many couples that were
headed for divorce have successfully
saved their marriages by attending a
weekend workshop. Retrouvaille is
not a sensitivity group, not a seminar,
not a social gathering.

Anointing of the Sick
May 23, 10:30 AM
In his epistle, St. James says, “Is any
among you sick? Let him call for the
elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith
will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if
he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” (Jas. 5:14–15).
Please join us for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick on Saturday, May 23 at 10:30 AM Mass. Anyone
who is seriously ill, experiencing disabilities because of
age, facing surgery, or who suffers from addictions or mental illness is encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick.
Does a person have to be dying to receive this sacrament?
No. The Catechism says, “The anointing of the sick is not
a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death.
Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in
danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time
for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived” (CCC 1514).
If you would like to be anointed on May 23 at the 10:30
AM Mass please call the OLL office at 503-636-7687.
Read this bulletin for further details in the coming weeks.

Steps For Life:
One person can make a difference! Participate in
the Steps for Life Walk on Saturday, May 16. Steps
for Life is a 2-mile family fun walkathon at Pioneer
Courthouse Square. Enjoy the petting zoo, clowns,
face painting, music and animal balloons before the
walk. This event provides funds for the ministry of
Pregnancy Resource Centers, which serves over
10,000 individuals in our community annually.
“We have sat with thousands of women, young girls, fathers and families throughout our city and have been able
to provide life-giving support to those facing unplanned
pregnancy through education, counseling and compassionate care based on the ministry of Jesus Christ. With
your help,- we are able to continue this vital work and
bring Jesus-centered transformation and hope to those
who are being impacted by sexual brokenness and abortion in Portland.”
For more info go to www.portlandprc.org/events or
call 503-256-0808 x58.
Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat:
On June 12-14 there will be a retreat in Portland
where healing, forgiveness, hope, and transformation
from abortion are offered in a safe, caring, and strictly
confidential environment. For more information, contact Patricia Hutchinson, Catholic Charities’ Project
Rachel Coordinator, at 800-249-8074 or [email protected]. To learn about the
national program, visit www.rachelsvineyard.org.
“Now I seek to help other women not make the same mistake I made, to know what abortion really is, to what it
really does to women. I want the public to know that unlike
what they hear from the culture, that abortion does not and
cannot help women, it can only hurt them.” Edith, MA
“Years later, I am ready to take action and help others who
have suffered like I did following an abortion. Post abortion
women need love and forgiveness, not shame and isolation.”
Melody, OK
“After the healing, the weight of the world came off my
shoulders then and I was able to see what had happened and
why my life was like it was because of that abortion.”
