OLLV School: 702-802-2323 “Thus it is written that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. In His name, penance for the remission of sins is to be preached to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of this. See, I send down upon you the promise of my Father. Remain here in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24, 46-49). The disciples were in Jerusalem keeping vigil in prayer. “And suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise like a strong, driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated. Tongues as of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them” (Acts 2, 2-4). This Sunday, 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus, the Church celebrates the feast of Pentecost. Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power and enlightenment from on high that would remind them of all that He taught them and thus enable them to begin the mission He gave them. And what is this mission? “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything that I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always until the end of the world” (Mt 28, 19-20). Pentecost celebrates the birthday of the apostolic mission of the Church. The disciples followed Jesus during His mission as He shared with them the Gospel. The disciples were being prepared to take the Gospel and share it with the world. After His death and ultimately His resurrection, Jesus, over a period of 40 days, showed himself to His disciples to reassure and convince them that He was alive. Jesus wanted to provide them with clear and convincing evidence that He is the Messiah of the world, promised by God, and that He, himself, is the divine Son of God. It was imperative that the disciples were certain of this truth, or else the mission on which they were about to embark would fail. This mission Jesus gave to His disciples would prove to be very difficult, challenging and even dangerous. Although the disciples had faith and believed that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God, they still needed to be strengthened to carry that truth to a world that would that would not be all that receptive. The Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to begin the mission. The Holy Spirit enabled them to take what they already knew and believed, and share it with the world. Through the incredible and convincing witness of the disciples, we have joined their ranks and have become believers too. We are also the disciples of Jesus, even though it has been over 2000 years since the mission began. And it is the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us to make our proclamation of faith as well. At our Baptism we were all given the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then, at our Confirmation, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit, and we were given the grace to be witnesses of Christ and empowered to share that witness with the world around us. After His resurrection, Jesus said to His disciple Thomas, “You became a believer because you have seen Me. Blessed are they who have not seen and believe” (Jn 20, 29). We are among the people whom Jesus has called blessed. Although we have not seen, we believe. And it is thanks to the Holy Spirit that we profess our faith and continue to carry it and share it in and through the Church. Pentecost brings the liturgical season of Easter to its culmination. Hopefully, through all that we have experienced during the Lenten and Easter seasons, we have deepened our faith and are even more convinced that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. All praise, honor and glory to Him forever and ever. AMEN! Fr. The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. 12 — OUR LADY OF LAS VEGAS CATHOLIC CHURCH MAY 24, 2015
