What a great result for all of the hard work put in by you, the members, and what a great honour it was to be able to represent all of you on the podium at the Bowls SA Awards Night. It is certainly great recognition for our Club. Additionally the personal awards won by Max Anesbury and Deanna Amos were very well deserved by both of them. Please read my separate article in this month’s Toucher on the awards and the presentation night. The award plaques and certificates will be displayed in the club rooms over the coming weeks. However, as with every club, life goes on and the reality is that we now have to maintain that standard. I am confident that our pride in this club, and the hard work of our volunteers, will sustain our momentum. The work on our new boundary fence has been progressing well over the last month. The young unemployed people that work with Madec, under the supervision of our own member, Graeme Sokolski, have been working hard and learning new skills along the way. The new fence is already bringing a fresh feel to the club grounds. Additionally, work has commenced on the Kitchen Upgrade Project with consultation now completed and the requirements of the chefs, food storage and processing as well as the cleaning equipment has all been identified and documented. The last part of the Interior Décor Project has commenced with the upgrade of the bar façade and already that is looking great. Our Honour Boards have been updated and several more items of memorabilia, inclusive of three historical photographs and drawings of our club premises, will soon be displayed in the club rooms. Final arrangements are in hand for the replacement of our carpets, the refurbishment of our dance floor and the installation of the new automatic sliding front doors – work on these will begin in late August. Our off-season social bowls calendar has ramped up and we now have games each Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday that are attracting a lot of our members as well as many visitors from surrounding clubs. On the social side of things we have enjoyed strong attendances at our Friday night dinners as well as the Big Afternoon Tea (in excess of $3,000 raised to fight cancer) and the third Folkathon to be held at our club – both of these events attracted a large number of visitors to the club. 4 All in all it is a very exciting and busy atmosphere around our club at the moment. On behalf of the Board of Management and all of our Members I wish to say a sincere thank you to every volunteer and member that has helped or participated in all of these activities. An important upcoming event is our inaugural Art Beside the Greens art exhibition to he held on the 25th and 26th July at the club rooms. A preview of the exhibition will be held for PNBC Members and invited guests on the evening of the 24th when our Mayor, Lorraine Rosenberg, will officially open the event – see full details in my separate article in this month’s Toucher. IMPORTANTLY – this is an event that will be open to the public so I ask that all members tell their friends and families about the exhibition and ensure that as many come through the doors over the two days as possible. Everyone that visits the club is from our community and has the potential to become a member of our club. Let’s go all out to make this exhibition, which is unique amongst bowling clubs, a huge success and another example as to why PNBC is THE bowling club in SA! Our Vice President – Membership, Pauline Costa returned home from her cruise and immediately went into action with preparations for our coming 2015 / 2016 Pennant Season commencing. Together with Bowls Director, Rick Hilder and Chairperson of Selectors, Barbara Nesbitt, the members who volunteered to form the Pennant Selection Panel were interviewed and the panel appointed. This year we had more volunteers than positions so it was a tough job making the final appointments but that augers well for the competitiveness of our club. Thank you to everyone who made themselves available for consideration for appointment to this really challenging and important role for our club. Our Head Development Coach, Deanna Amos, is not resting on her laurels either. Deanna has commenced developing the policy and role of a Coaching Panel that she will chair over this coming pennant season. This Panel will aim to continue the development of our newly accredited coaches and deliver a high quality, comprehensive coaching program for all of our members – keep an eye out in the next Toucher for an update on this initiative. Membership Director, Sandra Fameli, is continuing her work on collating our photographic history of the club and assisting me with the planning and developing of our memorial garden. This is important work for the history of our club and the enjoyment of our future members. Our hard working Treasurer, Rita Longshaw, is taking a well-earned break over the coming weeks whilst she goes on holiday – her loyal friend and club member Carmel has kindly volunteered to stand in for her during her absence. Please understand that being Treasurer of our club is a complex and demanding job and even more so when filling in for a short time – patience and respect are strong qualities of our membership and I ask that everyone assist Carmel where they can. 5 Geraldine Hudspeth, our Administration Secretary, has been fighting her own battles with a stint in hospital recently for some surgery on her foot to mend an old injury – despite the pain and difficulty this has caused, Geraldine has continued to rise to the challenges of her position and I thank her sincerely for her dedicated work for this club. The biggest disappointment for her was that her recovery prevented her from being at the Bowls SA Awards night to experience our success first hand – we kept her informed by text messages during the night and I am told that she and her mother Pam spent the whole evening glued to their phones and getting very noisy at home with the excitement! In the meantime I have met with Nigel from D & D who assures me that it will be business as usual for the upkeep of A & B Green with his current staff taking over the duties whilst a replacement for Jake is found. From my discussions with Nigel I am confident that the same high standards as delivered by Jake will continue. In closing I wish to acknowledge the participation of our friends at the South Coast Folk Club – our relationship with them continues to grow and many of their members are joining our club as social members. I was asked to provide a break down as to what Social Membership of our club means and what benefits are enjoyed. After preparing the information sheet I have decided to include it in this month’s Toucher for the reading of all members – I am sure you will all agree that it delivers great value for money. Yet another reason to encourage family and friends to join our club over the coming year. On a sad note, I was sorry to have to say goodbye and good luck to our member and green keeper Jake Herrmann. Jake, who worked for D & D Curators, recently won the apprentice of the year award for South Australia. That award must have stood him in good stead be- Yours in Bowling, cause he has been offered the job as green keeper at the Narrandera Bowl- Bryan Morden, ing Club in NSW. Jake finished up with a President few drinks with the members on Wednesday 3 June before travelling to his new home to commence his job their on 9 June – a quick turnaround! Jake has been a loyal servant to D & D Curators and a great member of our club and his happy and smiling face will be missed. He has promised to call in for a game when back in town. 6 OPEN INVITATION TO THE MEMBERS OF PNBC On behalf of the Board of Management I wish to extend an open invitation to all PNBC members to attend the Opening of our inaugural Art Beside the Greens art exhibition at the Club on Friday 24 July 2015 from 6-30 pm to 8-30 pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by the Mayor of City of Onkaparinga, Lorraine Rosenberg, in the presence of the members and invited guests. Our sponsors for the exhibition, Alpha Box and Dice Winery of McLaren Vale and Woolworths at Seaford Meadows will provide complimentary wine and finger food prior to the members and guests being able to preview the exhibition before its opening to the public. This will be a special occasion for the club and I would encourage all members to get a bit dressed up and come along to the opening and join in the fun. It will be an opportunity to meet the artists, Patricia Houston, Kevin Waters and Eric Payne, to talk with them about their art and, if you like one, purchase a painting prior to them becoming available to the public. We have received very generous support from our other sponsors for the exhibition, The City of Onkaparinga Art Centre and Sheila Bryce Publicity, so we are expecting a great opening and a well-attended art exhibition over the weekend. Some information on the artists: Patricia Houston Patricia was born in 1954 in Adelaide, SA. The eldest of eight children, Patricia spent her childhood on the family’s farming property in Kuitpo Forest on the Fleurieu Peninsula. As a small child Patricia loved drawing and she remembers regularly being in trouble for taking her father’s marking pencils and chalks. She drew on everything and anything she could find, even the nice smooth surface of the freshly cut pine log ends in the forest. Patricia started painting in 1979 and has taught art for over 35 years. She has lectured in art at the Noarlunga TAFE College and currently manages her own Houston Fine Art Gallery and Studios and picture framing business at Old Noarlunga. One of Patricia’s favourite places to paint “en plein air” is the Flinders Ranges. She is a self-taught artist and has painted Australia wide, on a two year painting trip around Australia, but has found some of the most rewarding places to paint are right here in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. One of her regular and favourite places for subjects, especially after a rain, the colours are unlike anywhere else in Australia. She has painted for many hours onsite in the gorges and Wilpena pound, with her favourite place being Parachilna Gorge. This professional artist will be sure to leave a very well documented mark in paint for all to see. Patricia is a woman with real character and she will continue to capture, on canvas, our beautiful landscapes, flora and fauna. 7 Kevin Waters Working and living at Leigh Creek in the upper Flinders for 34 years, instilled in Kevin an appreciation of the outstanding landscape features, both natural and man-made, that were all around the area, and a need to “capture” those images for future reference and enjoyment. Photography, and later sketching and painting, allowed Kevin to share his ideas of the beautiful outback country with others. The Flinders Ranges offer some truly remarkable scenery, and the ever changing seasons, colours, light and shadows provide more than enough material for any artist. The ruins of old homesteads and town buildings were of particular interest to Kevin, not only for their visual character, but for the “history” of their very being, and the stories of the pioneers who built and frequented such structures, and survived in those places and times. Kevin attempts to capture the detail of the subject matter in his works, in both oils and acrylics, and he prefers the western aspect of the Flinders Ranges where the harshness of the climate is more pronounced, and the earth colours are at their best, and of course the sunsets can be spectacular. The late afternoon light on the ranges offers a wealth of sharpness in the detail and colours, or a soft muted blend of the blues and ochres, depending on the weather at the time. Kevin retired as Town Manager of Leigh Creek in 1997, and now resides at Aldinga Beach, and has pursued his painting and photography interests, with paintings exhibited and sold at Hawker, Victor Harbor, Flagstaff Hill, Laura, Brighton, Ardrossan, Yankalilla and Orroroo, and most recently at Wilpena Pound, and has gained recognition and awards at exhibitions including First Prize at the 2008 Royal Adelaide Show. With family still living at Edeowie Station in the Flinders Ranges, Kevin has a “first class” excuse to visit the area and scenery as much as possible, and many of his works are based on the Edeowie experiences provided. Kevin has been a member of the “Gallery 88” at Yankalilla for seven years, and a recently retired (2014) member of the “Painters Of The Flinders Ranges” group. What you see in Kevin’s works is his interpretation of what he sees in the landscape! Eric Payne Perhaps because he was born in a log cabin in the wilds of the Canadian Rockies, Eric is inspired by Nature, by its beauty that is there to be appreciated by all who allow themselves to notice. For him, therefore, it has something to do with how we honour and have a sense of place; the earth and her variations are worth looking at and perhaps preserving. Eric loves the fact that art is genuine magic, an illusion. You create a window into a 3 dimensional world but the window is essentially a flat plane, upon which you put lines or colour. You hold it up, look into it and are transported into a place that doesn’t exist. If that isn’t pure magic, he doesn’t know what is. From the first moment he tried pastels, he was hooked. The immediacy, the tactile process, the magic of creating something as directly as is possible. No wonder kids love finger-painting. If we could only keep that. Pastels come as close as possible to doing that. Imagine that: being a kid again when ‘art’ was pure joy, and done for that reason. 8 It is this sense of child-like joy that he takes with him to what Canadian artist, Robert Genn, refers to as “going to your room”, a world that is created by the process of producing his art. This is the space where Eric is aware of nothing other than the world he is creating to share with others. Eric extends to you this invitation – “You are welcome to join me in my room. Enjoy your visit.” Bryan Morden, Level 3 Sponsor 9 DARRYL PRATT Sales Phone: +61 8 8352 3094 Fax: +61 8 8234 0781 Mobile: +61 417 843 547 Email: [email protected] Find us on Face book Follow us on Twitter Have a squiz at our Current Specials 94/96 Beach Road, Christies Beach 5165 Ph. 83824560 Call in for exceptional service to Club Members on presentation of membership card Level 1 Sponsor 10 Bowls SA & ANZ Partnership A rewarding partnership for PNBC members. A man was in his front garden when an attractive blond female neighbour came out and went straight to the mail box. She opened it and slammed it shut and stormed back into the house. A little later she came out again and went to the mail box and again opened it and slammed it shut again and angrily went back into the house. As the man was about to edge the lawn , out she came again and opened the mail box and slammed it shut even harder this time. Puzzled by her actions the man asked her, “is something wrong?” To which she replied, “There certainly is” My stupid computer keeps saying, “ YOU’VE GOT MAIL!” 14 How to start a fight Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is t errible." My loving wife of 5 years replied, "And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?" And that's how the fight started... PHENOMENAL TWO LETTER WORD This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other twoletter word, and that word is UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election (if there is a tie, it is a toss UP) and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is blocked UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with (UP to) a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . My time is UP! Oh . . . One more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P! Did that one crack you UP? 15 Member Profile - Raymond Hodson As told to Jenny Smith My name is Raymond Hodson, I was born on the 21st February 1935 I came to Australia via New Zealand where I lived for 18 years, I emigrated there in 1963 and then came to Australia in 1981. Level 2 Sponsor 17 A VIEW ON AGEING Do you realise that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we are kids If your less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about ageing that you think in fractions. “how old are you?” “I’m Four and a half”. Your never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half going on five! That’s the key. You get into the teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number or even a few ahead. “how old are you?’ I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13 but hey, you’re gonna be 16! Then the greatest day of your life … you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony… YOU BECOME 21 YESSSS!!! But then you turn 30, Ooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, and you’re just a sour-dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait !! You MAKE it to 60. you didn’t think you would. So you BECOME 21. TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. you’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing: you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch, you TURN 4.30; REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s you start going backwards: ‘I was JUST 92!” Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!” May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half Beach Road Open Market The Reserve, Beach Road Christies Beach 1st & 3rd Sunday in the month For more details contact: Liz Stanley on 8382 4784 Level 1 Sponsor 18 For those of us who remember…….. A POEM THAT SOME CAN RELATE I remember the cheese of my childhood, And bread that we cut with a knife When the children helped with the housework And the men went to work not the wife. I remember the ‘loo’ was a lav And the bogey man came in the night It wasn’t the least bit funny Going “out back” with no light. The interesting items we perused From the newspapers cut into squares And hung on a peg in the loo It too little to keep us amused. The cheese never needed a fridge, And the bread was so crusty and hot The children were seldom unhappy And the wife was content with her lot. The clothes were boiled in the copper With plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending As Mum pressed everyone’s duds. I remember the milk from the bottle, With yummy cream on the top, Our dinner came hot from the oven, And not from the fridge in the shop. The kids were a lot more contented They didn’t need money for kicks Just a game with there mates in the road And sometimes the Saturday flicks. I remember a slap on my backside And the taste of soap if I Swore Anorexia and diets weren’t heard of And we hadn’t much choice what we wore. I remember the shop on the corner Where a pen’orth of sweets was sold Do you think I’m a bit too nostalgic Or is it...I’m just getting old? Do you think that bruised our ego Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the table And I think life was better enjoyed. I would like to thank everyone who supported us over the years, for all the jokes, stories, help on a Monday morning etc. Special thanks go to Bryan and to all those people who got their articles in early each month and to Rita for her patience on printing days. Thanks also for the stamps which I hope you will keep saving, after trimming they will be forwarded to "Canteen" for fundraising, also thank you for the flannelette sheets and towels which have been made into blankets for the RSPCA and Animal Welfare, over 100 have already been donated this Autumn and Winter. Thank you all once again. Beryl From The Editor Hi Everyone Firstly I have to pay tribute to Beryl King and acknowledge the tremendous work she put in producing the Toucher over the last nine or ten years and she certainly is not going to be an easy act to follow. In this my first edition while still learning the ropes so to speak, you may notice a couple of small differences, but I have tried to make this issue seamless from previous editions. This is your magazine and I look forward to any suggestions and articles you would like published and I will endeavour to continue to produce a Toucher we can all enjoy. It was as a very proud President that I was able to accept, on behalf of all the members, the Bowls SA Best Overall Bowling Club in SA Award for 2014 / 2015 at the awards night on Friday 29 May. This very prestigious award was the culmination of all the hard work of our Board of Management, the club volunteers and the members over a long time. Together we have earned the recognition and accolades of the controlling body for our sport in SA as well as the acknowledgement of many highly placed dignitaries and business people around the State. I have been pleased to receive congratulations from our MP’s, our Mayor, our sponsors and business people as well as from many of the Presidents of the Bowling Clubs we come into regular contact with. In addition there will be an article, with photographs, about our achievements in the Southern Times Messenger and the Clubs SA Magazine. The awards night was a very glamourous affair that recognised the achievements of individuals as well as clubs and administrators within our sport in South Australia. It was a terrific night of celebration and I would encourage all our members to go to the Bowls SA web site and view the photographs of the evening. In addition to our club recognition, our Volunteer of the Year nomination, Max Anesbury and our Coach of the Year nomination, Deanna Amos also won their individual awards which, together with our Best Metropolitan Bowling Club 22 2014 / 2015 award, brought our total to 4 awards for the evening – quite overwhelming and something that has not been achieved by a single club before and is going to take some beating in the future. The process of nomination, qualification and assessment is a long and detailed process. The judges require detailed and substantiated information that fits the category of awards nominated for. For the information of the members I have included a short synopsis of some of the information provided to the judges for their consideration: 1. Volunteer of the Year 2014 / 2015 Max is 84 years young and has been involved in lawn bowls since 1982. He recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with wife Jean (also Life Member of PNBC) at the club. A country boy born in Orroroo, Max worked in the building trade and uses his skill and knowledge for his previous club (Nightcliff, NT - helped installed 2 greens there) our club and many of our members. Max is a tireless worker who is at the club nearly every day undertaking one task or another. During recent renovations he opened the club for contractors at 7-00 am and was still at the club late into the afternoon. Max has a very generous, giving nature with a keen sense of humour. He is honest, reliable and an absolute treasure for our club – through his volunteer work he has literally saved the club tens of thousands of dollars over the years. The high quality of facilities enjoyed by our club is largely due to his commitment to volunteering for our club 2. Coach of the Year 2014 / 2015 Deanna joined PNBC in 2014 and was appointed as Head Development Coach for season 2014 / 15. After years of coaching elite players at Prem 1 level Deanna was keen to embrace a new challenge and saw the chance to coach the members of PNBC as the opportunity she was looking for. PNBC is relatively new to the metropolitan pennant competition and is, by its own description, an ‘emerging club’ in Major League and Metro 1 pennant competition. Deanna saw this as an opportunity to assist their members to improve their individual and team performance. Deanna’s professionalism, experience and enthusiasm were quickly embraced by the members. Coaching was delivered through scheduled practice times on a Tuesday (am) and Friday (pm) of each week (a total of 5 hrs). This quickly expanded to a further session early on Tuesday afternoon as well as individual coaching before and after the scheduled coaching times. She also introduced discussion groups on the skills, strategy, laws and etiquette of the game to the scheduled coaching sessions. Deanna delivers coaching for no less than 8 hours per week. Deanna uses a combination of drills; individual coaching (including the use of video recording) and innovative skill focused training methods. Her high level of communication skills allows her to reach every member of the club from the novice to the experienced bowler. She enhances these sessions with a sense of fun and underlying enjoyment in the participation by 23 herself and the members – 2 jack competitions and 1 bowl elimination tournaments are examples of this approach. 3. Club of the Year 2014 / 2015 Metropolitan & Club of the Year 2014 / 2015 – Overall The members of PNBC take great pride in their club. They work hard and are active in all facets of the sport and operation of our club. Our volunteer group is large, well-managed and publicly appreciated. The membership takes our Mission Statement seriously and is committed to providing a welcome and friendly atmosphere at our club for all members of our community without limits. We actively seek opportunities to share our good fortune with those in our community – our creed is that PNBC is bigger than just a Bowling Club. In this way we feel we are great ambassadors for the great sport of Lawn Bowls. As I said, a short synopsis but I think every member can get a feel for the high level of sustained professionalism and performance required to by the judges when assessing our nominations. Well done to every member of PNBC – let’s keep up the good work! Bryan Morden, President The article from the Southern Times Messenger Club bowls over award night fields for the win Erin Jones THE trophy cabinet at Port Noarlunga Bowling Club shines as bright as its members' smiles. The River Rd club received four new honours at last month's Bowls SA awards night, including SA club of the year and best metropolitan club. President Bryan Morden says the awards show the dedication of the club's 200 members "We've worked really hard over the last several years towards this and it's a goal we're so very proud of," Mr Morden says. "This isn't a one-person effort, this is a club of members who have great pride and who worked hard to achieve these outcomes." The club was judged on its governance community initiatives and how it valued its members and volunteers. The club's success continued with head development coach Deanna Amos named coach of the year. Life member Max Anesbury, 84, was named volunteer of the year for his 23 years of service. In between his games, the Huntfield Heights resident is greens director and often in charge of general maintenance. "I love it down there - it's my second home," Mr Anesbury says. "It's a very friendly club and all the people are nice to get on with and I get a lot of satisfaction from volunteering." 24 For Competitive Tyre requirements go to Bob Jane T Mart Seaford Phone: 8386 1493 Level 1 Sponsor 25 Thursday Jackpot The men’s Thursday Jackpot is again underway and has been running for a few weeks since the break for the pennant season and is being run by Trevor Pitman with a few helpers.
