Today’s observance of Palm Sunday recalls Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem to the sounds of a triumphant crowd: “Hosanna to the Son of David”. But a few days later he is crucified for a trumped-up charge of treason. The Prince of Peace was a threat to his enemies and so he had to die. But something beyond our human understanding took place in Jerusalem 2000 years ago. God sent his Son to redeem his people, that is all His children. The Passion of the Lord is celebrated by the Christian world this week but already we know that the week doesn’t end on a negative note. Easter awaits those who endure the suffering and sorrow of this life. Still, it is important that the Church revisit the last week that Christ spent on earth so that it can be renewed in its faith. The events of Holy Week are liturgical, not a repeat of history. The history of Jesus, Son of God and Savior, that is retold in the unfolding of Holy Week, indeed is proclaimed this week, is much more than history-recalled. The liturgy of the Church draws the faithful into the mystery of God who alone can perform the work of salvation. Please come together and pray with us this Holy Week!... Please take a look at Symbolon, The Catholic Faith Explained which is available on-line. The QAS code is 87b3dc. Fifty-seven folks from QAS are learning more about the faith through Symbolon. Join them today! See the ad in today’s bulletin. LOUIS OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP March 29, 2015 TO THE FAITHFUL OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUIS Dear Priests, Deacons and Faithful of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, On Good Friday, April 3, 2015, the annual collection for the Holy Land will be taken up in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis. I am requesting all parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Louis take up this collection on Good Friday in support of the Holy Land. The annual Easter collection for Regina Cleri will be taken up in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015. Financial support for Regina Cleri primarily comes from this annual Easter collection and the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Gospel message of compassion confirms the need for the Good Friday collection in support of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. We must recognize how much the generous concern of Catholics around the world has already accomplished in this tumultuous area of the world. Our financial assistance supports the Holy Sites, but also those pastoral, charitable, educational and social works, which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities. Under the guidance of Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Regina Cleri opened as a home for retired archdiocesan priests in 1959. Cardinal Ritter was considered ahead of his time for opening Regina Cleri. Regina Cleri offers our priests the opportunity to retire form service and continue to live in an active faith community. More specifically, these resources come to the aid of families, often enhancing or saving the lives of the old, the sick, and the disabled. In addition, aid is provided to the unemployed and to youth that seek a brighter future. Although retired, many of the priests at Regina Cleri continue to assist in parishes, our archdiocesan schools, Catholic organizations, nursing homes, and hospitals celebrating Mass, assisting with Reconciliation, visiting the sick, and serving as spiritual leaders/counselors. I want to ask you for your generous support of the collection for the Holy Land on Good Friday, April 3, 2015. Please consider supporting the retired priests of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. These priests have served our archdiocese well and deserve both our prayers and financial support. We are very fortunate that the Archdiocese of St. Louis is able to provide excellent and proper care for our priests at Regina Cleri. For most of us, prayer becomes a source of frustration as we struggle to calm our minds and to find even a few minutes to pray. In our busy lives, prayer is seen as a luxury, when in reality it is at the foundation of a healthy spiritual life. The good news is that you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and it is easier than you might think. Over the course of eight weeks, the Oremus study program teaches you the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. Session Dates April 22 May 6 May 13 May 27 June 3 June 10 June 17 June 24 July 1 All sessions in the Church Hall at 7:00 pm. (The June 17 and June 24 sessions may be in the Library) Cost is determined by number of participants and will range between $15-$20 per participant for purchase of the study guide. Contact the Adult Resource Center to register and get more information: 846-8207, ext. 206 or 208 Chrism Mass Holy Thursday April 2, 2015 10:00 a.m. Cathedral Basilica You are invited to take part in one of the most special liturgies in the life of a diocese, the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. At this liturgy, the bishop gathers the faithful of the diocese–priests and deacons, religious and laity–around him for the blessing and consecration of the Oils that will be used in all our parishes in the coming year. The two Oils to be blessed are the Oil of the Sick, used to strengthen and console and heal those who are infirm, and the Oil of Catechumens, used to strengthen and free those who are preparing for Baptism. The third Oil, the Sacred Chrism, will be consecrated. This Oil is used to ordain bishops and priests, to confirm, and to dedicate churches and altars. We will also witness the Rite of Recommitment to Ministry by our priests. May our presence at the Chrism Mass be a sign of our support and gratitude for their ministry – and a reminder that Baptism calls all of us to lives of service. The Little White Book Six-minute reflections on the Resurrection Narrative according to John The Little W hite Book is meant to help you enjoy six minutes of prayer each day during the 50 days of the Easter season. The left-hand page is like a buffet table with a variety of items: Catholic traditions and customs, the saint of the day, historical facts, and information pieces. But the key is the right-hand page. On that page each day (except Sundays) you will walk through the final two chapters of John’s Gospel. These reading begin early Easter Sunday morning when Jesus’ tomb is discovered to be empty, and then continue with accounts of the appearances of the risen Jesus, through to the end of the Gospel. The stories you will read are familiar ones. But you’ll read them in a way that might be unfamiliar to some – line by line, right through to the end. When you normally hear the Gospels proclaimed at the Eucharist on Sundays of the Easter season, you hear short selections from one Gospel, then another, and so on. That has its value, but to read a whole Gospel, or a whole section of a Gospel line by line, consecutively, can be a very different experience. Reading it this way, you may notice some things you hadn’t noticed before. Six minutes a day is all it takes! Take one – they are free! (Books are available on the tables at the back of church and in the vestibule.) Brought to you by the Adult Faith Ministry Have you checked out the Symbolon program on our website yet? If you said no, WHY NOT? It’s FREE and a great way to learn more about our Catholic faith at your leisure, in your home and at your own pace. Go to www.qasstl.org, click Education, Adult Faith Formation, Symbolon and watch it online. (Code: 87b3dc) Let us know what you think! E-mail the ARC Room at [email protected]. Brought to you by the Adult Faith Ministry March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday Dynamic Catholic, Alive! - Conversion As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostle Paul had a dramatic conversion to Christ. For many of us, however, conversion is gradual: “Vibrant Christians are made, not born. They are formed, not produced. Spiritual formation is a life-long process.” And the conversion of the world begins with us: “The first culture that we need to transform is not the wider culture, but the culture of our own heart” (Archbishop Carlson). archstl.org/dynamic ACA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED As the focus of this year, let us call to mind the Prayer of St. Francis where we ask God to use us “as an instrument of his peace”. The ACA, through the generous donations of parishioners provides “Love, Faith, Hope, Light and Joy” to so many who otherwise would be forgotten. Looking to build a committee of volunteers to assist in the successful implementation of the Annual Catholic Appeal that will be running the weeks of April 19, April 26 and May 3. Making plans with others to go get some breakfast? Just heading home? Did you know that for the small time investment of 30 - 45 minutes you could save up to three people’s lives today? It’s tr ue. One pint of blood can save up to 3 lives, that’s AWESOME when you consider it. If you’ve never given blood before, it’s easy. You answer some questions about your health history, you get your blood pressure, temperature and a drop of blood from your finger tested, then for only about the pain of a small injection at the doctor’s office (usually much less painful) you give the gift of life. Blood can’t be manufactured; it can only be given freely through the compassionate generosity of donors. If you are at least 18 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health, please come over to the cafeteria after mass. It may be the most important thing you ever do in someone else’s life. Monday, March 30 11:00 am and 7:30 pm Church Hall Everyone welcome! HUNGERING FOR SEEDS OF HOME We follow Jesus this week on our Lenten journey as he enters into Jerusalem, a community he knew well. CRS Rice Bowl ask us, too, to prayerfully enter into our own communities, to find those who are hungry and thirsty, who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we encounter in our daily lives? LET’S PLAY CARDS SALAD DONATIONS St. Patrick's Center - more than ever - needs prepackaged salads for the Shamrock Club to serve alongside donated casseroles during lunch. QAS has a small devoted number of regular donors but the need is great. Please deposit bags of salad and un-opened dressing bottles on the front porch of 132 Staehle Ct. (Grimsley Station to Bluff Farm to Staehle Ct) on the 1st Wednesday of every month. A volunteer takes them downtown at 9:30am. Any questions, call Sheila Treptow 846-4015. Let us be the hands of Christ! Come one, come all! There will be cards, dominos or any game you want to play, in the Church Hall on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, 12:00 noon until 2:30 p.m. It’s free and cake, coffee and soda will be served. Make it a Special Day. Bring your spouse, a friend or a shut-in. The only time cards will be cancelled on the 2nd Wednesday of each month is if there is a Funeral Luncheon in the Church Hall. THE MASS: DO’S AND DONT’S INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL SIGNUPS FOR 1ST AND 2ND GRADE Sacramental theology teaches us the concept of the dispositive grace. Put plainly this means we receive abundance of graces in direct proportion to the openness of our heart and the disposition of our soul. If graces are few, the fault is never in the Sacrament - it is truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Rather, the limitation of grace is in the anemic or mediocre reception of the Sacrament. Indeed on Holy Communion properly received can bring us immeasurable graces that will be the most powerful of motivations to help us to get to heaven. Signups begin March 1 and run through the first weekend of May. Visit www.qasaa.org. There will be an outdoor soccer program for boys and girls of the parish. The program is for boys and girls ages 5 to 11 and will begin in early April. For more information, contact Marty, 314-393-1164 (cell).
