Principal: J. MacJanet Vice –Principal: G. Klassen NUTRITION March is Nutrition Month! Saving cents makes sense! Simmer up a pot of scrumptious soup. There’s nothing like the arome of homemade soup simmering on the stove on a cold day. Fill the pot with your favourite vegetables, whole grains and legumes for a healthy fibre-filled meal in a bowl. The combinations are endless! Make your own stock using vegetables; chicken, turkey or beef; water; garlic and spices. A big pot of soup can cost little and go a long way. Cook a pot of soup on the weekend to enjoy for lunches or simple weeknight suppers. Source: www.dietitians.ca Simple Carrot Soup (source: Karen Le Billon author of French Kids Eat Everything, www.karenlebillon.com) 60 ml (4 tbsp) olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 kg (2 lbs) carrots 1 litre (4 cups) of water salt to taste 5 ml (1 tsp) dried parsley and/or dill (optional) Saute chopped onion at low temperature for at least 5 minutes, or until golden. (This is the secret of the soup! So don’t rush.) Add carrots (peeled or unpeeled, you decide) and raise the temperature to medium-high heat, and saute for 2 minutes. Add water. Cook at a gentle rolling boil until carrots are soft (about 8 to 10 minutes). Remove from heat, add herbs, and puree until smooth. If you like a thinner soup, add more water until it’s just right. Mr. Teakle Immunization begins in early infancy and continues throughout life. Your child will receive the majority of his or her immunizations between the ages of two months and six years of age. Please take a moment to check your child’s Immunization Record (yellow card) to be sure his or her immunizations are up-to-date. Immunizations work best when given on time. For more information on childhood immunization, including the immunization schedule, speak with your doctor or visit www.health.gov.on.ca. If you have further questions, please call the Vaccine Preventable Disease Program at Niagara Region Public Health at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7425 to speak to a public health nurse. Students from grades 3-8 meet twice a week to play chess in the gym during nutrition breaks. On Thursday, March 12th, Richmond Street will be hosting a chess tournament for ten schools. Approximately 150 students will be playing chess in the gym that day! Good luck to the Richmond team as they prepare to do their best against some tough competition. Mr. Goar and Mrs. White are proud of everyone's effort and sportsmanship. MS READ-A-THON The M.S. Read-a-thon was another success this year. Over 60 students participated in the event and raised money for a worthwhile cause. Mrs. White is very proud of your reading and willingness to help others. Way to go Raptors! DANCE-A-THON Get ready for the school fundraiser Dance-a-Thon on Wednesday, March 11th. All students will be involved and we are hoping that each student brings in a minimum donation of $5.00 to help raise money for the school. We expect to have a great day full of fun with DJ BIG MAC. Every student will receive a prize for participating in addition to random draws throughout the day. For every $5.00 in donations you receive one ticket for the draw….so the more sponsors you get, the better your chances of winning a prize! ANNIE REHEARSAL Rehearsals are well underway for our production of Annie Jr. in May. We have over 50 cast members and many more who are interested in working behind the scenes. As we are preparing for the show, we are already beginning to gather props. If you are able to help out by lending us a prop, please send it in with your name on it, or contact Mr. Teakle. All props are listed online at http://padlet.com/raptors/anniejr and will continue to be updated as props come in. The playoffs for our league have not yet been completed. They played in a tournament at E.L. Crossley on January 30th. All of the girls played with heart and dedication, and they finished 3rd. In the DSBN tournament at Brock University, the girls were undefeated. They went on to play an intense game against Lockview on Supernight, which saw the score stay close all game. In the final seconds, some great foulshooting, smart passing, and an awesome shot saw the Lady Raptors win 25 24. DSBN Champions! Mr. Dupont, Mrs. Brydges, and the Richmond staff are very proud of the girls and how much they have improved, as well as how fantastically they represent our school whenever they take the court. Great work, ladies! INTERMEDIATE BOYS BASKETBALL The Intermediate Boys basketball team have had a very successful season so far! The team has been working hard since before Christmas break and has really come together and shown a lot of improvement this season. On February 17th, the boys played in the DSBN Tournament, which was held at Brock University. The boys won 4 out of their 5 games, which qualified them to play in the DSBN Super Night (Championship Night) against A.K. Wigg. The boys played extremely well and fought hard, however were defeated in the end by A.K. Wigg, making Richmond the Intermediate Boys Silver medalists for the DSBN. We have also now completed our regular season and have finished 3rd in our region, which qualifies us for playoffs. Coaches Miss Brady, Connor, and Matt are super proud of how far the boys have come this season and are looking forward to watching the boys continue to work hard and show off their skills. Best of luck in semi-finals on February 26th! MARCH BREAK ACTIVITIES Wondering what to do on March Break, check out the eFlyers on the DSBN Website for things to do.
