FATHER MARIO’S NOTE
Our Gospel reminds us of the fact that, despite the power of Christ over the grave, there are those
who doubt. Thomas doubted until he personally was able to ‘see the mark of the nails in His hands and put
my (his) finger into the nail marks and put my (his) hand into His side.” How many are there who feel the
same way? St Paul reminds us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
unseen.” Our Faith is the guide of our spiritual lives and…as Jesus so firmly states to Thomas in today’s
Gospel: “have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and
have believed.” Let us strive to do our best to keep our eyes on the Cross, and by faith, look forward to the
salvation we KNOW is ours, yet we are unable to totally grasp until eternity.
Today, the Second Sunday of Easter, Holy Mother Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday. Our late
Holy Father, St Pope John Paul II, stated: “Jesus Christ taught that man not only receives and experiences the
mercy of God, but that he is also called ‘to practice mercy’ towards others. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for
they shall obtain mercy.’ The Church sees in these words a call to action, and she tries to practice
mercy…Man attains to the merciful love of God, His mercy, to the extent that he himself is interiorly
transformed in the spirit of that love towards his neighbor” (Rich in Mercy). Various Divine Mercy
celebrations are being held throughout the Diocese of Covington and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati today.
Please refer to the Messenger and to the Archdiocesan website for locations and times.
May the Lord continue to bless you and yours during this Sacred Season!
In Christ’s love,
Fr Mario Joseph Tizziani
Pastor

CATECHISM
The Church – Body of Christ – “Christ and his
Church together make up the ‘whole Christ’ (Christus
totus). The Church is one with Christ. The saints are
acutely aware of this unity: ‘Let us rejoice then and
give thanks that we have become not only Christians,
but Christ himself. Do you understand and grasp,
brethren, God’s grace toward us? Marvel and rejoice:
we have become Christ. For if he is the head, we are
the members; he and we together are the whole
man…The fullness of Christ then is the head and the
members. But what fullness of Christ then is the head
and the members. But what does ‘head and members’
mean? Christ and the Church.’ (St Augustine). ‘Our
redeemer has shown himself to be one person with the
holy Church whom he has taken to himself.’ (Pope St
Gregory the Great). ‘Head and members form as it
were one and the same mystical person.’ (St Thomas
Aquinas). A reply of St Joan of Arc to her judges sums
up the faith of the holy doctors and the good sense of
the believer: ‘About Jesus Christ and the Church, I
simply know they’re just one thing, and we shouldn’t
complicate the matter’” (CCC 795).

THE WORD OF THE LORD
Proclaiming to the World the “Logos” of Hope –
“What the Church proclaims to the world is the Logos
of Hope; in order to be able to live fully each moment,
men and women need ‘the great hope’ which is ‘the
God who possesses a human face and who “has loved
us to the end”.’ This is a why the Church is missionary
by her very nature. We cannot keep to ourselves the
words of eternal life given to us in our encounter with
Jesus Christ: They are meant for everyone, for every
man and woman. Everyone today, whether he or she
knows it or not, needs this message. May the Lord
himself, as in the time of the prophet Amos, raise up in
our midst a new hunger and thirst for the Word of
God. It is our responsibility to pass on what, by
God’s grace, we ourselves have received”

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
“Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, whose
sins you retain are retained.”
This statement by Jesus that we read in the Gospel
today is understood as giving the Apostles and
their successors the power to forgive sins in the
sacrament of Reconciliation. And it’s fitting that
we just celebrated the death of Jesus that
reconciled us to the Father, he redeemed us. And
we understand that Jesus asks us to forgive each
other as the Father forgives us. But it’s hard to
forgive each other and we frequently hold
grudges, we retain the sins others commit against
us.
The question we ask ourselves today is, if we
retain the sins of each other, how can we ask the
Father to forgive us?
Aren’t we glad the Father doesn’t hold grudges?
For more on the Sunday readings visit our website,

DARKNESS AND LIGHT
The ancient story is told of a rabbi who gathered all his
students together very early in the morning while it
was still dark. He told them to pay attention because
he had a very important question to ask them. The
question was this: ‘How could they tell when night
had ended and the day was on its way back?’ One
student answered: ‘Could it be when you see an animal
and can tell whether it is a sheep or a dog?’ ‘No,’
answered the rabbi. Another student said: ‘Could it be
when you look at a tree in the distance and can tell
whether it is a fig tree or a peach tree?’ ‘No,’ answered
the rabbi. After a few more guesses, the students
demanded: ‘Well, then, what is it?’ ‘It is when you
look on the face of any woman or man and see that she
is your sister and he is your brother. Because if you
cannot do this then then no matter what time it is, it is
still night.’ In celebrating Easter, we rejoice in the
light that darkness cannot overpower; we celebrate that
God raised Jesus from the dead and that He extends
that homecoming to all of us; we thank God for the
faith that challenges us always to see more in others
because we love Him. In that Easter faith, we can
answer the question of the old rabbi. We can tell that
the night is gone and the day is on its way back when
we can look on the face of our brother and sister and
see something extraordinary, a glimpse of the face of
Jesus.
