 Fifth Sunday of Lent 
March 22, 2015
“I will place my law within them and write it upon their
hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
~ Jeremiah 31:33
 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis 

A few short weeks ago more than 1,000
catechumens and candidates of the RCIA
met downtown San Diego for the Rite of
Election. These men and women have
been preparing for a year now either to be
baptized or to make a profession of faith
in the Catholic Church. We are proud of
those in our parish who are taking this
step to join our family of faith and be one with us at the
table of the Lord. In doing so they are pledging their lives
to the service of Christ and His Church and they look to
the rest of us for inspiration and guidance. We pray that
our lives will be a good witness to them in their
continuing journey of faith. Lent, of course, is the perfect
time for each of us to look to our lives and strive to grow
spiritually. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving help us to
grow stronger in the spirit of Christ. When we pray we
come to know the Lord more intimately which leads us to
“give up” something so that we can get to know Him
better. Fasting in turn leads to almsgiving which helps us
to see that we are all in this together. When we Catholics
give alms we show to the world that we are not just a
single congregation but we are united as the Universal
Church reaching out in care for those less fortunate than
ourselves. A good way to give alms is by contributing to
the Annual Catholic Appeal of the Diocese that helps to
support the many ministries of the diocese (we have it so
why not share it?) and by contributing to our parish
Lenten Project which is helping to build the surgical
center at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital in the
Archdiocese of Mbarara, Uganda. Already tens of
thousands of children have been served by the hospital we
have helped build and many more will benefit from the
surgical center. Think about it: as blessed as we are, how
can we not share with others less fortunate? This is the
Church Servant of which Jesus asks us to be a part. This
coincides well with the last three “sins” identified by the
Holy Father in his Address to the Roman Curia.
13. The sickness of accumulating comes about
when the Christian seeks to fill a void in his life with
more and more “things” rather than with Christ in order to
feel secure. Pope Francis reminds us how foolish that is
because “the shroud does not have pockets” and all of our
earthly treasures could be more of a hindrance than a help
to our salvation. Matthew 25 is a good meditation for
every Christian. We are not merely a congregation; we
are part of the Universal Church responsible for the
welfare of the less fortunate.
14. The sickness of closed circles prevents us
from seeing the good in one another as we stick to just our
little group of like-minded people. No one likes to feel
excluded, especially at church. We must to open
ourselves to welcome others, especially visitors and
newcomers, not only to our community, but to our parish
organizations as well.
15. The sickness of worldly profit, of
exhibitionism when everything a person does has only one
goal: personal advancement or profit. This sickness does
so much evil because it can lead to calumny, conceit, even
lying in order to “look good” and be thought of as
influential.
These 15 sicknesses identified by Pope Francis
can be overcome only by conversion which comes from
prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent – even just the
remainder of Lent – offers us the perfect opportunity for
conversion which we celebrate with new life at Easter!
Let’s not waste this precious time!
PALM SUNDAY is next
Sunday.
Palms will be
distributed as you enter the
church and will be blessed at
the beginning of Mass. When
Jesus entered Jerusalem the
people crowded around Him
and paved His way with palms and olive branches. Palms
are an ancient sign of victory. Jesus, the Messiah, was
seen as a conquering hero! In the early Church this
symbol of victory came to signify the victory a Christian
won by martyrdom for the faith. Hence, the palm is also a
symbol of the victory of Christ over death. In today’s
society when so much of what is sacred is accosted on
every side the blessed palm in our homes will remind us
of the cost of discipleship and the ultimate victory we will
share with Christ in heaven.
PURPLE
ENVELOPES
for
supporting our Parish Lenten Project
of the surgical center at Holy
Innocents Children’s Hospital can be
found in the vestibule of the church on the table in front of
the holy water font. With the center simple surgeries like
tonsillectomies, not to mention more complicated
surgeries, can be performed on the children of Mbarara.
Need a good Lenten project for almsgiving? This is one!
Another is support for the Diocesan ACA which assists
the diocese in its many ministries. Anything over our
assessment of $102,000 will be used as: 1/3 back to the
parish; 1/3 to Catholic Education; 1/3 to help our poorer,
sister parishes in Imperial Valley meet their needs.

up-to-date. Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off
the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will
list names for prayer requests for one month. After the last Sunday of
the month the names on the list will be taken off and a new prayer
request list will be published the first Sunday of the month. If someone
wishes to have a name remembered again, the name must be resubmitted to the office. This will assure that we keep an up-to-date and
more readable list.

YOU ARE INVITED: San Rafael
Traditional Choir will perform a
contemporary cantata, Wondrous Love,

This very memorable work by composer
Lloyd Larson is based on the meaningful
and very touching sacred hymn, "What Wondrous Love"
(Original Melody by William Walker from The Southern
Harmony, 1835). This musical offering provides an
excellent way to enter into the events of Holy Week,

SAN RAFAEL “MASS TAXI:” Would you
be willing to help someone get to Mass? Do
you need a ride to be able to attend Mass?
There are members of our parish community
who are unable to attend Mass because they
lack transportation. Others have actually paid for a taxi to
take them to Mass. Many come to Mass with ample space
in their cars. The San Rafael “Mass Taxi” Ministry is
collecting names of those who need rides and will attempt
to match them to those in their neighborhoods who can
supply a ride at a Mass time suitable for both. This is not
necessarily a weekly commitment. We will try to be
flexible to meet everyone’s schedule. There is a special
need for transportation to and from the 9:00 a.m. and
10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, and also for drivers in the
Seven Oaks and Oaks North areas. Understand that the
commitment is to and from Mass only. If you have a need
for a ride or if you can help provide a ride to someone else
in the parish, call Maryann Lorenz at (858)485-6696 or
email maryann@rmlorenz@com. Thank you!
STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Blessed
Virgin Mary will visit San Rafael Parish
at 10:00 a.m. on Holy Thursday

passion and death. Please come for this beautiful prayer
service. Invite all your friends. All who attend have
found it extremely moving and spiritual. Childcare is

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL: By this time all
registered parishioners should have received their ACA
materials in the mail. For those who are not registered
and wish to participate, pledge cards can be found in the
vestibule of the church. It is critical that every single
Catholic participate in the ACA to help the diocese meet
its needs in ministering to the Catholics of San Diego and
Imperial Counties. Without you who will do the job?
Our parish assessment is $102,000. Please help us meet
that goal. As you know, as in years past any amount
pledged and received over the assessment will be divided
into three: 1/3 to the parish, 1/3 to Imperial Valley Parish
Development; 1/3 to the Diocesan Catholic Education
Fund.
LENTEN PARISH CHARITY this year is
being designated for the construction of the
Surgical Center at Holy Innocents
Children’s Hospital in the Archdiocese of Mbarara,
Uganda. Envelopes for the project can be found in the
vestibule of the church for those who would like to
contribute. A good way to contribute to this is to save all
your pocket change during Lent and give it to the project
at Easter time. Another way to do this is to figure out the
cost of a regular Friday meal which was reduced by
fasting and give that money to the project. Do you go out
to eat a lot? Well, cut down on going out to eat and the
money you’d spend on the meal give to the project.
Remember, ALMSGIVING as well as prayer and fasting
is an important part of our Lenten renewal.
CHARITABLE GIFTS: A gift of your securities,
including stocks or bonds, is an easy way to make a gift.
By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you can
avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be
due if you sold these assets. For more information on
giving a gift through securities, please visit our diocesan
website at www.diocese-sdiego.org and click on “Giving
– Stock Donations” at the top of the website. Or, you
may contact the Office for Stewardship and Development,
Damian Esparza, at (858)490-8294.
