We maintain our unrelenting focus on Literacy and Numeracy
this year at Bremer State High School. This week has seen
our Year 7 and Year 9 students complete the NAPLAN testing
as every student across Australia has. We are hopeful that
our students felt a little more comfortable and more able to
meet the challenges of this testing regime than they might
have without our recent support of them, but ultimately the
NAPLAN results will simply show us what the performance of
our students in Year 7 and Year 9 was on a particular set
of days in a particular set of tests. Our challenge is for the
long term and our goal is that every Bremer State High School
student graduates from our school as literate and numerate.

Our new staffing appointments continue. We are reshaping our
school so we are best positioned to meet the challenging goals
we have set ourselves at Bremer State High School.
We recently welcomed a new Head of Department in Learning
Support to our school. Mr Gregor Cameron brings with him
a wealth of experience and expertise in the area of learning
support. We also welcomed Ms Deb Cameron who is
supporting Literacy and Numeracy through direct work with
students.

Economics Excursion
Our Mistake
I am a strong believer in being straight forward when you
make an error. Parents who have joined the Bremer State High
School Resource Scheme and paid to do so, recently received
a letter in error in relation to the Scheme. Our apologies for this.
Our intent was that this would indicate how the Bremer State
High School Resource Scheme process would operate in the
future for all parents but this was not made clear.
Towards the end of last term, the Year 12 Economics class
travelled into Brisbane for an early morning Seminar about
the current state of the Australian economy. Hosted by Karen
Hooper – Senior Representative (Queensland), Reserve Bank
of Australia; the morning gave us an interesting insight into
recent trends, global influences and the reasoning behind past
monetary policy decisions. Despite the 7am start, the Seminar
was a great opportunity for the class to mix with other senior
economics classes and learn about the Australian economy
from one of our nation’s leading economists.
General “Climate” of the School
If you have watched the Australian movie classic “The Castle”,
you might remember Darryl’s solicitor (Denis Denuto) loved the
phrase “the vibe”. He used it to describe anything of importance
that worked well such as the Australian Constitution.
Well, Denis would possibly enjoy “the vibe” at Bremer State
High School this term. 100% of students in uniform, students
positively engaged in learning and teachers in charge of
classrooms. It looks good, feels good and is good.
Congratulations to all of our students for their continuing effort
and our fantastic staff who constantly go the “extra mile” for our
kids.

The Principal Supports the Arts
When Mr Morrison arrived at Bremer SHS he requested student
art work for his office. Below are art works that have been on
display to date. Students involved have been doubly thrilled to
have their work displayed there and to meet with the principal
to discuss their art concepts and media approaches. Thank you
Mr. Morrison for your continued encouragement and support of
students’ involvement in the VISUAL ARTS at Bremer!
VISUAL ARTS Photography Club lifts off in Term
1 with great success
Photography Club is now up and running with a group of keen
student photographers from years 9-11. A small but dedicated
photography gallery has been established in the Administration
4
building, outside of the Principal’s and Deputy Principal’s
offices. This exhibition space will canvass photography
student’s work as they explore new and specific artistic
concepts each fortnight. Students in Photography Club include
Javan McGuckin, Louise Lofgren, Ainsley Robertson, Courtney
Campbell, Eloise Warwick and Flower Dang.
Students have held four group exhibitions to date marked by
the exploration of the following photographic focuses:
Exhibition 1: Initial experiences with compositional frameworks;
Exhibition 2: The colour orange and Exhibition 3: Using
directional lines to effect and Exhibition 4: Action.
Given these students initial responses to this medium, we look
forward to future photographic work on display.

DONE JAHANNA KATT!!
Students of Year 11 and 12 AUTHORITY VISUAL ARTS are
required to submit a critical appraisal document in each term. I
have included Jahanna’s term 1 appraisal essay from the Term
1 Unit on ‘Poetic Journey’ as an outstanding example of such
written work. Jahanna’s essay reflects outstanding effort and
academic rigour and this example is a credit to her at this early
stage of her Authority Visual Art Course.

This year Blue Dog training has come on board to help us
deliver the following VET certificates.

• Certificate I in Construction (CPC1011) within BCD.
• Certificate II in Engineering Pathways (MEM20413)
within EGS.

In both cases, students will begin the certificates in Year 11
and gain QCE points upon completion of the certificate. These
certificate courses are designed for students wishing to follow a
vocation in either the Construction or Engineering trades.
A large focus in this unit is on machine safety as well as finishing
techniques.

This year, we were proud to be able to offer some very
deserving Defence family students the opportunity to attend an
Anzac themed, Resilience Adventure Day Camp at Emu Gully.
The students who attended have experienced 80 deployments,
94 recent parental absences of longer than 3months and 279
changes of school/cities between them.
Major Sponsorship from the Australian
Public Service Benevolent Fund and
Defence Health, along with kind donations
from Ipswich Sub Branch RSL, Ipswich
Railways Sub Branch RSL and the Combat Support Group
ensured the camp was affordable for many families. Emu Gully
also kindly donated the morning tea and an awesome barbeque
lunch for the day.
Seventy students, along with support staff and some parents of
our SEU students, were initially challenged with No Man’s Land,
before navigating the Bridge over the River Kwai and crawling
through the Tunnels of Vietnam. We finished the day by trekking
through the mud of the Kokoda Track, as a cohesive, dirty
but accomplished team! The history of these campaigns was
conveyed along with debriefs about what we had learned about
ourselves and each other through completing these tasks.
Many students overcame personal fears and anxieties to
discover hidden strengths. We learnt to go from this level to a
higher level (you had to be there to get it!).

ANZAC ASSEMBLY 24 April
This year with commemoration of the Centenary of Gallipoli, the
Spirit of Anzac was widely publicised. That spirit was certainly in
full swing at Bremer State High School for our Anzac Assembly.
We were thrilled to receive a letter of thanks from veterans
and members of the Eastern Suburbs Anzac Day Committee
who attended, commenting on the kindness shown to them
by everyone and praising our Captains who ‘conversed with
them (sic) in the Office in a very relaxed yet respectful manner.’
Additionally, they commented on the ‘behaviour of the students
during the assembly – quietness, genuine interest and respect’.
A special thanks must go to invited guests: Councillor Andrew
Antoniolli, Mr & Mrs Owen, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jackson. Thanks
must also go to the captains, cadets, choir and wreath bearers
who stepped up to make the assembly a very special and fitting
tribute. It was a privilege to have Mr Ashley Owen read the Ode
and we thought we would leave you with the Anzac Reflection
kindly presented by a father of several of our students, Sergeant
Dale Godfrey.
Anzac Reflection 2015
Anzac Day is a day for remembrance. A day to think of the
many ordinary men and women, who have served our country.
All of those who have worn the Australian uniform were once
just like you. They were raised in families of all different shapes
and sizes; attended schools, learnt, socialized and played,
maturing on their life's journey.
Their reasons for joining were varied; a grand adventure, a
mateship pact, an opportunity to travel the world, something
exciting. All had a belief in what they were going to do. .. They
fought not because of hatred for the people in front of them,
they fought because of their love for those who were left behind
them.
Anzac Day is a day to reflect. It's a day to think of what we
have. We often hear that we live in the 'lucky country' - but
what exactly is that. It is a country where not only being free,
but feeling free is accepted. We can do, say, be, anything we
want; if we apply ourselves. We can follow whichever path we
choose. That is a freedom worth defending.
Anzac Day is a day to honour. A day to think of those ordinary
men and women, who in service to our country showed us how
to endure hardship. They showed us how to be courageous.
They showed us how to be resilient, at all times believing in
themselves, ourselves, coming together. It is not about grand
ideals or empires or nations, but about the ordinary person,
who when pushed did the extraordinary.
The legacy of the Anzacs is a lesson we can all learn. We can
choose to stand up with and for our mates. We can choose to
look at the positive of a situation and not let it overwhelm us. We
can choose the battles we need to fight and those we should
walk away from. We take strength in the freedom of our choice.
We can choose to be loyal, to be courageous and to endure.
And so on Anzac Day, I would ask that you take a moment to
reflect on the Anzacs; the many brave men and women who
have followed in their footsteps; along with the families and
loved ones they have left behind.
You cannot be forced or commanded to, but I hope that you
choose to take a moment to remember, reflect and honour their
memory their spirit and their legacy.
Lest We Forget....
Student Resource Scheme
Bremer State High School operates a Student Resource
Scheme, which most families would be aware of. By
participating in this scheme, students are supplied with
textbooks and many other resources for use at school to assist
with their educational outcomes. This Scheme is offered to
assist parents with a cost effective alternative rather parents/
9
carers being required to purchase textbooks and other
resources themselves.
While participation in this Resource Scheme is not compulsory
, the following options apply to families of Bremer State High
School who have not signed up to or paid the Student
Resource Scheme for 2015:
Option A
Parents/carers complete the Participation Agreement Form and
have it returned to the school office, student counter or finance
window.
Or
Option B
Parents/carers return the Participation Agreement Form and
indicate that they do not wish to join the Student Resource
Scheme.

Bremer State High School P & C News
Reminder to all Bremer State High School families – there will
be a day time P & C Meeting on June 16 at 9am in the
Conference Room. Meeting will take no longer than 1 hour with
morning tea being provided. All interested parents, care givers
and community members are invited. This day time meeting is
a great opportunity to meet the P & C Executive Team and

School Based Traineeships and Work
Experience
It doesn’t matter what type of bike you own, if you don’t have
it engraved to prove ownership how will the police be able to
contact who it belongs to.
Bremer State High School offers students in Years 10 to 12
the chance to undertake work experience or school based
traineeships. These provide valuable experiences and, in some
cases, career pathways for those looking to pursue work
straight out of school. To assist in this, we work with
Apprenticeships QLD (AQ) to identify and establish placements.
Dianna Hockins – School Liaison Coordinator from
Apprenticeships Qld says competition is strong for positions in
both school based and full time apprenticeships.
In a tough economic climate, positions are limited and students
need to put their best foot forward and do all they can to
maximise their chances.
Shrewd employers are snapping up those students who fit their
criteria. Many businesses prefer students who have finished
school, have their licences and own transport however some
have realised school based apprenticeships and traineeships
give them an early chance at picking up the best applicants.
Students fortunate enough to land a school based contract get
a clear head start in their chosen field over those starting after
completion of school.
AQ recommends students participate in the work experience
programme for up to 30 days to optimize their chances of
obtaining a position and to ensure they have chosen the
industry that best suits them. This way, employers also get a
great opportunity to see applicants on the job and snap up
candidates if they like what they see.

Thousands of bicycles are recovered by police each year and
most are never reunited with their owner simply because the
person can’t be found.
The NHWQ Bicycle Identification Card is a simple way for you
to record important information about your bike to prove that
you are the owner.
If your bike is ever stolen or lost, you can present the Bike ID
Card to the local police to see if they have in their possession.
Simply fill out the Bike ID Card Bicycle Identification Card
attached and keep it in a safe place.
Remember: report bicycle theft to police, regardless of the
value of the bike.
