Activity One - The Great Fire of London
Baking bread
The Great Fire of London started on 3 September 1666 at the shop of the
King’s baker, Thomas Farynor, in Pudding Lane. Make some bread and imagine
what it might have been like to work in the bakery.
Ingredients
For one loaf of soda bread you will need:
• 500 grams self-raising flour
• 1 level teaspoon salt
• 25 grams margarine or butter
• 250 millilitres milk
How to make it
• mix together the self-raising flour and salt
• rub in the margarine or butter
• make a hole in the centre of the mixture and pour in most of the milk, gradually
working in the flour, adding more milk if necessary to form a soft dough
• turn the dough on to a floured surface and knead lightly for a minute
• shape into a ball and place on a floured baking sheet (using a sharp knife to make
a cross cut in the centre)
• bake on the middle shelf of a hot oven at 220°C or Gas Mark 7 for about 40 minutes
• if you want to make brown soda bread, use half plain white flour and half brown
