Zias Drop Season Series to NMHU
For the first time since 2008, ENMU has lost the
season series to intrastate rival New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls defeat the Zias in four sets at
the BritKare Lady Buff Classic and in Greyhound
Arena. The teams will meet once more on Nov.
4 in Las Vegas, N.M. Eastern has never lost three
matches in a season. The longest losing streak for
the Zias over the Cowgirls was four from 2005-06.
Incredible Comeback
At Texas A&M-Commerce, Eastern New Mexico
pulled off an incredible comeback for a five-set
victory. Down two sets to none, the Zias won the
final three sets for the win. The fifth set was won
by Eastern 16-14 after they trailed 14-9. It was the
first win in five sets for ENMU when they lost the
first two sets since September 13, 2008 against
East Central at home.
Winning Month
Eastern New Mexico went 7-6 in September. It is
their first winning month since November 2004.
That month the Zias went 4-2 as they reached the
regional semifinals.
Sweep of TexAnns
For the second straight season, Eastern New
Mexico swept Tarleton State in Greyhound Arena.
The Zias have not accomplished the feat since doing so since 2003-05 (No home match in 2004). It
is also the first time since a five-match streak from
2002-05 that ENMU won consecutive matches
over TSU in three sets.
Come Back in Five
The Zias came back down two sets to one to
defeat Midwestern State at home. It was the first
time since Nov. 5, 2013 at Lubbock Christian
that ENMU accomplished the feat. The last time
Eastern did so in a Lone Star Conference match
was on Sept. 25, 2012 in Greyhound Arena against
Cameron.
All-Tournament Selection for Frye
Lauren Frye was the lone selection for ENMU
to the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Volleyball
Invitational All-Tournament team. Lauren Bevan of
WT was named the MVP while teammate Kameryn
Hayes joined her on the all-tournament squad.
Other selections were Ashley Bukowski (Texas
A&M-Kingsville), Kaitlyn DeStefano (Adelphi),
Stephani Sonka (Fort Lewis) and Bailey Swan
(American International).
Back-to-Back 20-Kill Matches
Frye recorded back-to-back 20 kill matches on the
final day of the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Volleyball Invitational. She recorded a career-high 22
kills against Fort Lewis and 20 kills versus Adelphi.
She is the first Zias to record back-to-back 20 kill
matches since teammate Lindsey Barron had 20
kills against Abilene Christian and at New Mexico
Highlands on September 15 and 18, 2012.
Frye Dominates in Kingsville
Frye was dominate in all four matches for Eastern
New Mexico at the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina
Volleyball Invitational. She had at least 10 kills
in each contest with a career-high 22 coming
against Fort Lewis while posting a career-best .545
attack percentage versus the host Javelinas. In the
tournament, Frye had 66 kills, averaged 4.40 kills
per set, had an attacking percentage of .410 and
12 blocks.
Season Openers
Eastern New Mexico is 20-19 all-time in season
openers following their five-set win over Colorado-Colorado Springs. It was the Zias first season
opening win 2012 when they beat Texas-Permian
Basin 3-1 also at the Lady Buff Classic.
Year 2 of Poyer Era Begins
The second season of the Sia Poyer era begins
with four matches at the Lady Buff Classic hosted
by West Texas A&M. Eastern New Mexico will play
four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents in Adams State, Colorado-Colorado Springs,
Colorado Mesa and in-state rival New Mexico
Highlands. Both the Grizzlies and Mavericks
finished tied in a five-way tie for third last season
in conference play with a 13-6 mark while the
Mountain Lions and Cowgirls won seven and six
RMAC matches, respecitvely.
Zia Returners
ENMU returns eight players that saw the court in
2013. Key returners include the LSC Freshman of
the Year Lauren Frye, all-LSC honorable mention selection Courtney Lawson, middle blockers
Agatha Gibbons and Bree Anna Lucero and setters
Kennedi Catano and Karra Day. Also back for her
final season is Lindsey Barron after setting out
last year because of an injury. In 2012, she led the
squad with 324 kills and 3.56 k/s while also posting 171 digs and 22 blocks.
Zias Picked Ninth in LSC
ENMU was selected to finish eighth in the Lone
Star Conference for the 2014 season by coaches,

Sia Poyer
Head Volleyball Coach
ENMU Head Volleyball Coach 2013-Present
• Eighth head coach in program history.
• First LSC Tournament appearance in nine years in first season.
Valdosta State Head Volleyball Coach 2005-12
• 129-137 Record
• Three winnings seasons in previous four campaigns.
• Eight players received all-conference honors in final two seasons.
Sia Poyer begins his second year as the
head coach of the Eastern New Mexico
University volleyball program.
In his year at the helm, he posted an 8-20
record while leading the team to their first
Lone Star Conference Tournament appearance since 2004. Three Zias where named
all-conference and Lauren Frye was named
Freshman of the Year, a first for ENMU since
1991. During 2013, the Zias ended losing
streaks to Midwestern State and Tarleton
State while sweeping Cameron.
Prior to being named the eighth head
coach in ENMU history and succeeding his
former mentor Mike Maguire, Poyer spent
eight years in the same position at Valdosta
State.
During his time at the helm of the Blazers,
Poyer posted a 129-137 record including
winning records in three of his last four
years. Following the 2012 season, VSU’s four
All-Gulf South Conference selections tied
for the most of any team in the conference.
Poyer guided eight players to all-conference honors over the last two campaigns.
His best season came in 2010 when the
team posted a 21-11 overall mark and 7-3 in
the GSC.
As a first year head coach in 2005, Poyer
guided the Blazers to 10 wins after the program posted four-win campaigns in both
2003 and 2004. The program’s 10 wins were
the most since a 15-victory season in 2002.
the following season, the team exploded
for a 21-15 record and earned a berth in the
GSC Tournament. When the season closed,
VSU had set records in a number of categories including kills, digs and blocks.
Over Poyer’s 14 seasons at ENMU as an
assistant coach, the squads posted a 187-81
record. The highlight of his tenure came
during the 2004 season when the Zias
reached teh NCAA Division II Southwest Regional Tournament and took a thrilling fiveset decision from Mesa State in the opening
round. Eastern also won two regular-season
LSC titles and a conference tournament
crown over that span.
