A Woman’s Wisdom: How the Book of Proverbs Speaks to Everything
by Lydia Brownback
Unpacking the book of Proverbs, Lydia Brownback shows
how the Bible speaks to real life issues such as money, purity,
marriage, and the day-to-day grind. Writing with a familiar
yet knowledgeable tone, Brownback draws in the busiest of
readers and asks realistic questions for personal reflection or
group study.
“It is so refreshing to read a book that handles the kinds of things that every
woman will face from one single perspective; the stunning wisdom of God.
Read and experience how God’s wisdom is eloquent and transcendent while
being concrete and practical at the same time.”
Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries

From Jolene’s Desk . . .
How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear?
I cry out to You, "Violence!" Yet You do not save. Habakuk 1:2
I do not like to wait. To be perfectly clear, I am not to blame for this
character flaw. Part of the blame I attribute to my mother, who is equally impatient. Some of it rests with the managers who schedules too few checkers at
the stores where I wait in line. A teeny-tiny bit of blame belongs whoever programs red lights to be way too long at intersections. And a little of it belongs
to modern technology, which has trained me to expect instant gratification
with every computer click.
But most of the blame, the way I see it, belongs to God. After all, the
moment I recently became aware of a difficult matter dear to my heart, I did
what Christians are supposed to do. I started to pray a really good prayer. It
was full of sentiments about accepting God’s will, whatever that might be.
Packed with praise for God’s sovereignty and the goodness of His ways. Filled
with snippets of Bible verses acknowledging all of the above. Stating my intent
to wait upon the Lord until, in His perfect timing, He answered my prayer as
He saw fit. Ending with big, fat, juicy, emotional “amen.”
About five seconds later, things started to fall apart. Not because I was
impatient or anything. But because God did not immediately respond to my
perfectly constructed, perfectly Christian prayer as expected. Instead, His
answer was to wait. Which as has been mentioned before, is not something I
do well. And I’m in good company. The Bible is full of impatient people who,
while they couldn’t blame store managers or traffic light programmers or computers for their character flaws, they did occasionally blame God. And maybe
their mothers. Though there’s not so much biblical evidence on that front, so
let’s not go there.
However, the Bible is full of stories of people who blamed God for
making them wait. Who did the people blame while they wandered for 40
years in the wilderness? God. Who did Jonah blame for his 3 day stay in the
belly of a whale? God. Who did Elijah blame for the need to hide in a cave for
days on end? God. Who did Habakuk want to blame when the kingdom of
Judah was about to fall? God.
But Jesus, who laid aside His heavenly powers and come to earth, didn’t blame God when He waited and walked among us for 33 years. He didn’t
blame God for hours of agony on the cross or for lying dead in a tomb for 3
days. Instead of blaming God for making Him wait, Jesus trusted His Father as
He waited. The waiting was hell, but Jesus trusted God’s promise of the glory
waiting for Him–and for us–on the other side.
When waiting is hell for you and me, we can do better than blaming
God or store managers or technology, for our impatience. Instead, we can
lean into Jesus. We can ask Him to show us how to wait and how to trust our
Page
faithful Father. With Jesus holding us up, we can look beyond the
wait to what’s waiting on the other side–glory, wholeness, restoration, and
rejoicing in the presence of God. An eternity worth waiting for, don’t you
think?
Blameless in Christ,

How to Pray for Your Pastor (www.sbcvoices.com)
by Todd Benkert, pastor of Harvest Baptist Fellowship in Merrillville, Indiana. Todd
also blogs at www.behiswitnesses.com.
As a pastor, one of the greatest encouragements is to hear the words “I’m
praying for you.” Truly, one of the great blessings of being a pastor is knowing that
prayers are being lifted up on your behalf. Often, people ask how they can be praying
for me. While there are particular needs that I have from time to time, here are some
prayers for pastors that are always in season:
Pray that we stay vitally connected to the Lord in our personal devotion. Like everyone else, the tendency is for people is to drift.
Pray that we would maintain a constant fellowship with the Lord, day by day,
hour by hour, moment by moment.
Pray for our growth. Pray that we will continue to grow spiritually,
to grow in wisdom and maturity, to grow in knowledge of the things of God,
and most of all to grow in Christ-likeness. Pray that we will never be satisfied
with our current state, but will continue to “press on toward the goal.”
Pray that we live and minister in total dependence on the
Lord. It would be very easy to attempt to do the work to which God has
called us in our own strength. Pray that we would rely on God to work
through us as we are obedient to his call. Pray that we would minister in the
strength God provides and not attempt to do things on our own.
Pray for godly wisdom as we lead. Pastors need the Lord’s wisdom as they lead in setting the direction of the church, prepare messages and
teachings from God’s word, deal with conflict, minister to people in need, lead
the church in evangelistic outreach, and serve as administrators of the church.
Pastors need the wisdom that only God can provide. Pray that God would give
us that wisdom.
Pray that we would be shielded from spiritual attack. Pastors
are on the front lines of spiritual warfare. The devil has his eye on pastors to
Page 6
lead them into sin and disobedience to God, keep them discouraged and
defeated, and keep them occupied with distractions. Pastors are often under
spiritual attack. Pray that the Lord would protect us from the evil one.
Pray for their marriage and families. Ministry can be stressful not
only to pastors, but also to their wives and families. Pray that your pastor will
make his wife and children a priority as his first ministry. Pray that God will
strengthen your pastor’s marriage relationship and protect his family.
Moms 4 Moms
is an encouragement group for mothers of young
children in Boone with daycare provided!
We are meeting the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays from 9-10:30 a.m. and will be
studying the book No More Perfect Kids by Jill Savage & Kathy Koch.
Love Your Kids for Who They Are. Your kids are
created in God's image, not your own. The authors Jill and
Kathy will guide you in truly appreciating your kids. They
will teach you how to study and become an expert on
your children, because you cannot fully embrace them until
you truly know them. Written in a passionate, candid, and
personal tone, the authors will instill within you hope and
contentment. You'll be inspired to apply the practical,
realistic, and relevant ideas and tactics Jill and Kathy share.
Special needs kids will also be addressed in the book.
Childcare volunteers are crucial in helping to make this
group possible, so please consider helping with this ministry for moms!
Check out the Moms 4 Moms Boone IA Facebook page for more
