Over those years, I have seen the Arts Club become increasingly more influential within Canadian theatre and play a big part in making Vancouver artistically vibrant. Check with your financial planner to learn more about how planned giving can work to your advantage. If you would like further information about making a planned gift, or have already included the Arts Club in your estate, please contact Kathy Mackenzie, Interim Director of Development at 604.687.5315 ext 252. We would appreciate the opportunity to thank you and recognize your support. SPONSORED BY 6 ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Outside The Box Carmen Aguirre’s Blue Box is an insightful exploration of issues and places most of us are either not aware of or have chosen to ignore. Carmen takes us on a journey that is both cathartic and disturbing. Theatre, unlike any other medium, can pull us directly into a single individual’s world and shake us up. Carmen does that by asking us to leave our own daily concerns behind and go on the journey with her. It is a commitment to let our prejudices evaporate and open our minds to someone who is as free thinking and inventive as Carmen is. Blue Box is an appropriate choice to open our Revue Stage season, where we have a record number of subscribers. The Revue Stage season includes three other productions. A Twisted Christmas Carol, by Rock Paper Scissors, directed by John Murphy, takes the basic tale of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and allows you, the audience members, to give the five actors (Diana Frances, Jeff Gladstone, Gary Jones, Bill Pozzobon, and Kirk Smith) suggestions of how you think Mr. Dickens’s story should proceed. Who knows? Scrooge could easily go on an entirely different trajectory than the one in the famous novella. In January of 2015 we will collaborate with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival to present Rob Drummond’s Bullet Catch, which is described as a “high-grade magic show with a profound theatrical meditation on free will”—in other words, a death defying performance! The final production is the premiere of Sister Judy by Shawn Macdonald, directed by Patrick McDonald. Shawn also conducts our LEAP program for young playwrights, as well as being an actor and playwright. We commissioned Shawn as one of the original Silver Commissions and I look forward to the production of his thought provoking play. Welcome to Blue Box and our Revue Stage season! As a non-profit arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic Director’s Circle today. INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Would You Live a Double Life? This tagline for Carmen Aguirre’s work, Blue Box, resonates with me. In July, I became Interim Executive Director while remaining Director of Finance and Systems. The last three months have been busy, fun, hard, and interesting. I’ve learned more than I thought I’d learn, and I’ve been privileged to interact with the Arts Club Theatre Company’s artists, staff, volunteers, donors, and patrons more closely than ever before. And I’m lucky that when I go home to my “triple” life, my family is proud and supportive. The greatest benefit of working this summer has been learning how the Arts Club’s patrons are also proud and supportive. Many of you have added donor to your role with us and we are inspired to do more with your support. For the 2014/2015 season, we increased the number of performances by 8% to 607. We’ve increased our investment in new play development, providing the opportunity for works by local playwrights to be developed for presentation at our Revue Stage. Also, in partnership with Bard on the Beach, we are hard at work building the West 1st Theatre Centre that will be a new resource for the community. Another initiative that I’m pleased to support personally is planned giving. October is Arts Club’s Planned Giving Month, sponsored by Bell Alliance Lawyers and Notaries Public. During October, we will be raising the awareness of making a legacy gift. Please pick up a brochure in the lobby to find information about joining our Arts Club Legacy Circle. Soon I will be giving up the “double life”, but I know that you will welcome the new Executive Director as warmly as you’ve welcomed me over the past few months. Valerie L. Prodanuk Executive Director (Interim) [email protected] Arts Club Theatre Company Website designed and hosted by E-Commerce Solutions 604.831.5097 www.worldexposure.com in the Granville Island Hotel www.docksidevancouver.com | t. 604-685-7070 9 A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT Blue Box is a no-holds-barred examination of two core stories that live within me. One belongs to the South, the other to the North. The only thing they have in common is that they happened to the same person. They both explore the theme of unconditional love in completely different realms: the romantic and the revolutionary, and the tension between the two, ultimately asking where self-love fits in. I invite you to jump off the cliff with me and go on this wild ride of abandon and absolute surrender to that mighty force called love. ~Carmen Aguirre GENTLE REMINDERS It is very important to turn off alarms, phones, and beepers for the duration of the show. If you are concerned about missing an emergency call, please leave your name or device and seat location with an usher and we will alert you if a call comes through. Please wait to discuss the show at intermission or after the show ends. (Even whispers carry!) Please refrain from eating or unwrapping candy and gum in the theatre, as it is a distraction for others. If you have a complaint about another guest, please tell the Audience Services Manager rather than approaching the person yourself. We will be happy to address concerns on your behalf. We welcome children old enough to enjoy our productions and tickets must be purchased for any child attending a performance. Children must be seated where they can be supervised. Babes in arms are not permitted in the theatre. Please be judicious with your use of fragrances, as some patrons have sensitivities. A blue box is located in the lobby for discarded programmes and other recyclables. Please contact the Audience Services Manager at 604.687.5315, ext. 403 if you have suggestions for how we can serve you better. Enjoy the show! 10 ABOUT NIGHTSWIMMING AND THE PLAY Carmen Aguirre’s Blue Box was commissioned and developed by Nightswimming, one of Canada’s leading creators of new works of theatre, dance, and music. When the re-development of Vancouver’s False Creek area began in the late 1970s, the company was given the opportunity to build a theatre on Granville Island. By the time the Arts Club held the gala opening of the Granville Island Stage in October 1979, the Arts Club was a fully professional company presenting its 16th season of plays. The company is now in its 51st season.
