IASA ANNUAL CONFERENCE OCTOBER 8-10, 2014 Crowne Plaza Hotel 3000 South Dirksen Parkway Springfield, IL 62703 With all you do, let us take care of you. With over 50 years in providing employee benefits to the education community, American Fidelity Assurance Company is here to assist. Let us help you save time, simplify plan administration, and identify possible cost-savings opportunities today. Whitney Dyson 333 Salem Place, Suite 130 Fairview Heights, IL 62208 855-822-9168 americanfidelity.com SB-26220-0813 Welcome from the IASA President The IASA mission statement reads "To support school leaders in the pursuit of educational excellence through continued school improvement.” As president of IASA, it is my privilege to welcome you to the IASA Annual Conference, where the pursuit of educational excellence is the reason we gather. I encourage you not only to take advantage of the top-notch lineup of speakers and breakout sessions at the conference, but also to avail yourself of the tremendous networking opportunity with superintendents from all over the state. Illinois is a large and diverse state, but we share many of the same challenges we face in public education. So we use this opportunity to learn more about how we can better support each other and better solve some of these common problems. I hope you enjoy the conference and are able to return to your communities armed not only with knowledge from our presenters, but also with insights from each other. Yours for better schools, Scott D. Kuffel IASA President 2014 IASA Annual Conference 1 Welcome from the IASA Executive Director It is my pleasure as Executive Director of IASA to welcome you to this year’s conference, where we are celebrating our Golden Anniversary -- our 50th year as a stand-alone association representing school superintendents and administrators. To commemorate this special occasion, conference attendees will receive a special coin as a keepsake. We hope the coin reminds you of the IASA vision “Maximum Educational Success for All Students” and of the knowledge, information and perhaps even new perspectives that come out of this conference. We have what I believe is our most outstanding group of nationally known speakers yet, covering topics that include education in the digital age, leadership, connecting with your community, and high achievement in a poor community. Each year, the challenges in public education seem to get more complex and difficult. This conference was designed to help you address those challenges. I hope that these three days prove to be a valuable learning experience, and that you are able to enjoy being around your peers and colleagues in a setting that promotes discussion and the exchange of ideas. K12 Insight’s solution is predicated on the fact that public schools face a deficit far worse than one of fiscal resources — and that is the deficit of trust. With social media and school choice disrupting the world of K-12 education, educational leaders and school boards nationwide are struggling to find their footing. Farooqui presents regularly at conferences and seminars nationwide, including those sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and National School Boards Association (NSBA). His essays on key public education issues have been published in journals such as AASA’s School Administrator, TASA’s INSIGHT and NYSCOSS’ CouncilGram. He’s been called “a modern day Thoreau” by Newsday, “a genius and a saint” by The New York Times, and “the most interesting and influential classroom teacher in the country” by The Washington Post. For the past two decades, he has taught fifth graders at a public school in a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and violence. His students are mostly immigrants or children of immigrants, living in poverty and learning English as a second language. Yet, under his tutelage, they voluntarily come to class at 6:30 a.m. and often stay until 5 p.m. They learn math, reading, and science. But they also play Vivaldi, perform Shakespeare, often score in the top 1 percent on standardized tests, and go on to attend the best universities. Esquith is the only teacher to be awarded the President’s National Medal of the Arts. He’s also written four books, including the critically acclaimed “Real Talk for Real Teachers,” and “Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire.” Esquith has also been featured, along with his students, in the PBS documentary The Hobart Shakespeareans. 2014 IASA Annual Conference 21 Illinois Education JOB BANK Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA) Uses Website to Connect Employers with Job Seekers. Thursday, October 9, 2014 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Plaza A Make Assessment Matter – What Do Students, Teachers and District Administrators Want from Tests? The first comprehensive study of assessment perceptions, For Every Child Multiple Measures, conducted by NWEA and Grunwald & Associates in 2012 opened the door to a better understanding of how parents, teachers and district administrators perceive assessment—something not previously explored. It then seemed essential to add the student voice to this research and Make Assessment Matter was released in 2014. For the first time, students speak directly on what assessment means to them. (continued on the next page) 2014 IASA Annual Conference 25 PERA Strand (Cont.) During this session we will present the findings which show how perceptions are shifting; solid support for assessments that are used in the teaching and learning process; and how the findings are highly relevant to the ongoing public dialogue about the role of assessment in education. This data will help superintendents cut through the “noise” from media and a fragmented public, navigate the divergent understanding of assessment in your schools; and increase understanding of assessment for your teachers, students and parents in your district. Thursday, October 9, 2014 3 - 4 p.m. Plaza C Student Growth for Teacher Evaluation This session will provide helpful information to school administrators concerning the use of Student Growth for teacher evaluation purposes. New digital ‘techbooks’ arrive on tablets (iPads and others) with cloud-based media DNA: differentiated, embedded and rich as the web. When administrators work to move a site or district to digital, it helps to see what ‘digital’ really means. The inevitable smarter ‘books’ have profound implications because when the textbook goes digital, the whole game changes. Learning resources not only touch the cloud, they also become their own backpack with cameras, sensors, encyclopedias, and much more. BYOD and new assessment models suddenly make more sense. Evaluating teaching and learning gets new legs. During this session we will present the findings which show how perceptions are shifting; solid support for assessments that are used in the teaching and learning process; and how the findings are highly relevant to the ongoing public dialogue about the role of assessment in education. This data will help superintendents cut through the “noise” from media and a fragmented public, navigate the divergent understanding of assessment in your schools; and increase understanding of assessment for your teachers, students and parents in your district. Public school systems face two serious deficits — fiscal and trust. While everyone understands a lack of money, it’s difficult to communicate a lack of trust. As social media empowers vocal naysayers, district administrators lose ground, ultimately risking the very future of education. To build public trust — and gain support for difficult decision-making — superintendents must promote authentic dialogue with all stakeholders. K12 Insight’s solutions engage parents, teachers, staff, students and taxpayers in seamless conversations that yield positive, compelling results — including deep reserves of community trust. However, some children, those raised in poverty for example, are especially vulnerable to environmental influences such as stress and lack of language exposure in the home which alter brain maturation and readiness for literacy and numeracy instruction. But the good news is that neuroscience research is providing answers: effective teaching methods can overcome these brain-based barriers to learning and guide instruction. This review of the new neuroscience research in education will conclude with best practices for maximizing the achievement of struggling students.
