Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12, 2014 “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” ~ Philippians 4:13 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis e-mail: [email protected] A week or so ago The San Diego Union Tribune had an article about a new math system being implemented in several of the school districts in San Diego County. Apparently, this goes somewhat against the “core curriculum” that has been proposed nationally and some educators and parents are questioning whether the “new math” is appropriate. Admittedly, I had to laugh out loud at questioning the “new math” because “new math” was introduced when I was in elementary school. For the first three years we learned regular arithmetic. In Fourth Grade our math system was done with an abacus (!?), Fifth grade began “new math” and by Sixth Grade I was as confused as a Jesuit on the altar during Holy Week! I never got over it either. Thankfully, English and History made up for Math and Science to keep up my GPA. As we go through life there are times we are sailing along like everything is right in the world. There are other times when we stumble and fall like a toddler learning to walk and we wonder if things will ever go right for us again. We can easily become discouraged and give in to feelings of pessimism and doubt which then cloud our whole perspective on life. We should never forget that many of the great saints of the Church had such feelings, which are the result of the evil one doing everything possible to discourage the faithful disciple of Jesus. After all, the “core curriculum” of our faith is allegiance to Christ and His Church. When new ideas or methods come along that promise bigger results and grander success we can be fairly certain that nothing of the sort will happen. When we leave our faith core curriculum and then find ourselves in hot water, Satan will do nothing more than laugh at our predicament and leave us there to stew in the mess we’ve made. It then becomes the role of Christ to come along, pull us out, clean us up, gently teach us the error of our ways and then send us off again. However, Jesus doesn’t just send us off on our own for a tiptoe through the tulips in field strewn with land mines. He directs and guides us, shows the safe way along the path to salvation and trusts us enough to have learned what He taught. When we walk that path we should remember what St. Paul wrote to the Philippians that we read in today’s Second Reading: “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” That is the faith filled response of Christians who know that despite everything the evil one or life in general can throw at us we will be more than conquerors because Christ is on our side to guide us and strengthen us. Never fail to look to the cross of Christ to be reassured of God’s love for us. God loves us so much He became one of us, lived among us, in human form suffered for our sake by taking our sins on Himself and allowed the pain of death to be overcome by resurrection and new life. “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me” is an important part of our core curriculum that can never be improved upon or replaced by new ideas or philosophies. OUR PARISH PILGRIMAGE to Assisi and Rome departs on Monday. Please pray for a safe journey for all involved during these next 10 days. At so many of the sites sacred to our Faith in Assisi and Rome you will all have a prayerful remembrance. ALL SOULS DAY is Sunday, November 2. Our Masses on All Souls Day will be offered for all those whose names are submitted. Envelopes for the All Souls Remembrance can be found in the vestibule of the Church. A special Diocesan All Souls Day Mass will be celebrated Monday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum, located at 4470 Hilltop Drive, San Diego, 92102. Msgr. Dennis, Director of Diocesan Cemeteries, will be the celebrant of the Mass. Our parish Resurrection Choir will be singing for the Mass. CONGRATULATIONS AND GOD'S BLESSINGS to our neighbors at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation who last week celebrated their Golden Jubilee of ministry here in Rancho Bernardo and Poway! Although many of the issues that divided Catholics and Lutherans in the past have been swept away, there are still some elements that prevent us from sharing the Eucharist together and truly being in holy communion with one another. However, we are intimately bound together by our common baptism and we look forward to many more years of sharing and working together with our Lutheran brothers and sisters to bring "God among us" in our neighborhood! CONGRATULATIONS to Sebastion Nicastro, one of our parishioners! He is being honored with two other WW11 Veterans from the Remington Club for their service. Maybe you’ve seen them on TV news? The three flew to Washington DC on October 3rd courtesy of The Honors Flight to see their monument and tour our capitol. You can always see Sebastian in a back pew at daily Mass. Everyone from Dostoevsky and Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where something dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish were astonished recently to see their children skipping with delight as they left the place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God’s love. .~ Rev. We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers in the bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list upto-date. Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will list names for prayer requests for one month. After the last Sunday of the month the names on the list will be taken off and a new prayer request list will be published the first Sunday of the month. If someone wishes to have a name remembered again, the name must be re-submitted to the office. This will assure that we keep an up-to-date and more readable list.
