************************************************************************************************************ THE WESTERN NEW YORK PEACE CENTER'S WEEKLY UPDATES October 8 to 14, 2014 A Compilation of News and Upcoming Events of Interest to the Local Progressive Community ************************************************************************************************************ Peacemakers, Please send all notices you want publicized to: [email protected] Send them in by Tuesday, October 14th to ensure their inclusion in the October 15th to 21st Weekly Updates. Also, please mention whether or not you want some rolling notices such as articles or videos taken down (for reasons of timeliness or other) and new ones put in their place, in order to save on space and keep the Updates fresh. In case the entire Updates are not readable through your email account, a basic PDF text file of this week's news and announcements is attached for download. Your comments and suggestions to make the Updates more useful are VERY much appreciated. Thank you! ADDED NOTE: In the near-future, we may be splitting up the Weekly Updates into two separate email newsletters: one for WNY Peace Center /Task Force News & Events, and another for Allied Organizations News & Events/Other Items Of Note. There has been concern about the recent increase of length in the Weekly Updates (this is for various reasons). We strive not only to be an effective activist resource, but also a welcoming community calendar, and one that is reader-friendly within the boundaries of a text-only newsletter. We are still working on the NationBuilder website as well. Please let us know if this arrangement would work out for you. Thank you all! :-) - Jeff O'Connell =========================================================== SAVE THE DATE!!!!! Fracking for oil and natural gas has led to drinking water contamination, public health problems and dangerous explosions in states across the country. The toxic waste it produces is often radioactive, and it contains an array of cancer-causing chemicals. Yet due to oversight, it's mishandled at municipal treatment plants and has even been spread on local roadways as an ice-melting agent. There is no safe way to treat this toxic waste — which is why we need to keep it from being disposed of here in Amherst. Now is the time to tell the Amherst Town Board to protect us from fracking! Please sign the petition below. We'll deliver your signature and additional message directly to your elected officials. http://tinyurl.com/kghqsxv/ ************************************ "Global Frackdown 2014" Saturday, October 18 11:00 a.m. Bidwell Park 78 Bidwell Parkway Buffalo, NY 14222 The Global Frackdown will unite concerned citizens everywhere for a day of action in October 2014 to send a message to elected officials in our communities and across the globe that we want a future powered by clean, renewable energy, not dirty, polluting fossil fuels. The journey to a renewable energy future will not be fueled by shale gas. Climate scientists warn that continued extraction and burning of fossil fuels will lead to catastrophic climate change. As the oil and gas industry escalates its public relations offensive, it is critical that our elected officials hear the truth from their constituents. Fracking is an inherently dangerous technology and shale gas is not a bridge fuel to a low-carbon economy. It’s time to expose the oil and gas industry’s desire to profit at the expense of our communities and our environment. It’s time to hold our elected officials accountable. It’s time for another Global Frackdown. Participants in the Global Frackdown will organize events in their communities to challenge decision makers to oppose fracking, united around a common mission statement calling for a ban on fracking and investment in a clean energy future. This includes $449 million in 2013. • St. Louis County, where Ferguson is located, received two military vehicles, a trailer, a generator, 12 5.56-millimeter rifles and six . 45 caliber pistols from the Pentagon. • Military style police raids have increased in recent years, with one count putting the number at 80,000 such raids last year. • In SWAT style raids, people of color are most affected - 37% were Black, 12% Latino, and 19% White. Race was not known for the remainder. Police militarization grew out of our failed drug war. Does a town of 2,200 need a massive military tank? Why does the police department in Dundee Michigan need a MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected vehicle)? They don’t. Military grade gear does not improve the safety and security in small towns. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel must end the flow of military grade gear from the Pentagon to our local communities. It’s time for the militarizing of police to end. Last month, protests in Ferguson, MO turned violent after police showed up in full SWAT gear after fellow officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown. But Ferguson isn’t the only community receiving military grade weaponry from the Pentagon. We need to roll back programs 1033, 1122, and the National Defense Authorization Act. Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri will chair a subcommittee hearing tomorrow on Capitol Hill looking into police militarization. Our intention is to avoid any traces of bias or blame and to bear witness to empathy, compassion and love. We believe that in spite of all the arguments, diplomacy and military efforts, there cannot ever be a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine until we can all sit at the same table together, look into each other's eyes and see ourselves in whoever the "other" might be for us. With that spirit in mind, and with the sad presumption that it will likely still be a long time until a just and lasting peace is realized, we plan to continue these vigils for some time. We will fly four flags: an apolitical peace flag, a Palestinian Flag, an Israeli flag and a Multi-Faith COEXIST flag. Signs are welcome, but only those that speak clearly for solidarity and peace between Israel and Palestine without a trace of bias or blame. Samples of signs that will be welcomed: Peace for the People of Israel and Palestine Peace for the People of Palestine and Israel Peace for the Lands of Palestine and Israel Peace for the Lands of Israel and Palestine Peace For All War for None We Shall Never Be Enemies For more information, contact: Jim Whitlock: [email protected] Faizan Haq: [email protected] Cynthia Lehman: [email protected] Rabbi Drorah Setel: [email protected] Facebook Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1459090427692759/ Photos and Documents from previous vigils: http://tinyurl.com/lbc4swu/ ============================================================= PEACEFUL CONFLICT RESOLUTION (PCR) ************************************ “5th Annual National Week Of Action Against School Pushout” Please join with other Buffalo students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members next week in events occurring both locally and nationally, as part of the 5th Annual National Week of Action Against School Pushout (suspensions and other discouragements that push struggling students out of school), happening from October 6 to 11. All are invited to join. ************************************ ARTICLE: “Two Recent Deaths At Holding Center Trigger Protest” (Buffalo News: September 25, 2014) http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/police-courts/two-recent-deaths-at-holding-center-trigger-protest-20140924 Chuck Culhane, of the WNY Peace Center's Prisoners' Rights Task Force, is interviewed in the article. ************************************ “Interview: ECHC Suicide” Interview by Martin Guigino and Chuck Culhane (of the WNY Peace Center) of a woman who was just released after spending 50 days in the Erie County Sheriff’s Holding Facility. The interview was done during a Weekly Vigil session on September 24, 2014. The judge remanded her from court back to the facility for four more hours to complete her sentence. She talks about the recent suicide on the women's floor. The holding facility is for short term holds primarily, except that juvenile women can be housed there long term, she says (in a part of the interview that was lost). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic_TJu3fMtg&feature=youtu.be ************************************ “To Prison For Poverty” New two-part video on the New Debtors Prison, from Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films (http://www.bravenewfilms.org/). So now what's happening now? The railroads are shipping highly explosive Bakken crude oil in DOT-111 from North Dakota through Chicago, Buffalo, upstate NY and ending in Albany. The Bakken crude is carried in 80 to 100 unit car trains: trains that carry only one item: Bakken crude oil in 80 to 100 DOT-111 tanker cars. It's a disaster waiting to happen. The Department of Transportation is taking public comment until Sept. 30 on its proposed new rules for the DOT-111 tank cars and oil train transportation. Please comment that DOT-111 should be banned immediately from carrying Bakken crude oil, or other flammable substances. His music concerns topical subjects such as the 2003 Iraq war, anti-globalization and social justice issues. Rovics has been an outspoken critic of former President George W. Bush, the Republican Party, John Kerry, and the Democratic Party. "Rovics is critical of the United States government's policies and claims that the U.S. government's foreign policy represents U.S. corporate interests and that 'the U.S. government does not like democracy either at home or abroad.' "Although some of Rovics' work is not self-published, and much of it is commercially distributed, Rovics has made all of his recorded music freely available as downloadable mp3 files. He encourages the free distribution of his work by all non-profit means to promote his work and spread political messages, and speaks out against websites or programs like iTunes that charge money for downloading his songs. Rovics has also advocated the performing of his songs at protests and demonstrations and has made his sheet music and lyrics available for download..." From David Rovics' Official Website (http://davidrovics.com/): "David Rovics grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 90's he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-90's he was traveling the world as a professional flatpicking rabble-rouser. "These days David lives in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes, pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies. He has shared the stage with a veritable who's who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. "His essays are published regularly on CounterPunch and elsewhere, and the 200+ songs he makes available for free on the web have been downloaded more than a million times. Most importantly, he's really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible." Official Website: http://becauseilovepeace.org/ Please "LIKE" Because, I Love Peace on Facebook, and ask what you can do to support Sarah's project! https://www.facebook.com/Becauseilovepeace/ Statement by Sarah on the Facebook Page: "ABOUT: "An idea that developed in peaceful hearts and got through thoughtful minds. In an attempt to give a bit from ourselves back to the world, and help people from the place that we came from to understand what we understand and of what we believe of peace. "DESCRIPTION: "This project simply requires two things: to think of a message of love and peace that you wish to deliver to a struggling community in Iraq, and then put it on paper. Simple idea: exchanging physical letters. "OUR GOAL: "An idea that developed in peaceful hearts and got through thoughtful minds. We hope that this will serve as a reminder for those beginning to lose faith in humanity to be aware of the kindness and support that exists in the world. It's our attempt to give a bit of ourselves back to the world and the place where we come from. We believe that the answer to all problems is peace within that liberates us and makes us whole. "ABOUT THE LETTERS: "By exchanging beautiful thoughts, that originate from the heart and the soul of one human to another across the world. Simple Idea: exchanging physical letters, that can be as simple as one word, and as complicated as a Shakespearean poem. We don't mind pictures, drawings, questions, printings, leaves, and even dirt. These letters are not age specific. Anyone is welcomed to write a letter. "HOW THE LETTERS WILL REACH: "We will make it happen. By going back and forth from the United States and Iraq, we will do our best to see that every letter will go to the right hand. Anyone who wishes to receive a letter back can contact us. We will provide a sign-up sheet along with the rest of the material. "HELP: "Your help is what will make this happen. Let's try to make peace our priority, and by spreading the word and having people write more letters, we will take Because, I Love... Peace to a new level. Our cause is noble and we believe that nothing is impossible. We just need to join efforts and work together for greater good." "The organization endeavors to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis, and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life. "Soldiers who serve in the Territories witness and participate in military actions which change them immensely. Cases of abuse towards Palestinians, looting, and destruction of property have been the norm for years, but are still explained as extreme and unique cases. "Our testimonies portray a different, and much grimmer picture in which deterioration of moral standards finds expression in the character of orders and the rules of engagement, and are justified in the name of security. While this reality is known to Israeli soldiers and commanders, Israeli society continues to turn a blind eye, and to deny that which happens in its name. Discharged soldiers who return to civilian life discover the gap between the reality which they encountered in the Territories, and the silence which they encounter at home. "In order to become civilians again, soldiers are forced to ignore what they have seen and done. "Breaking the Silence voices the experiences of these soldiers, forcing Israeli society to address the reality which it has helped to create." He is a former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, and is one of the longest held political prisoners in the world. Jalil was born October 18, 1951, in Oakland, CA. His early years were spent in San Francisco, where he actively participated in NAACP youth organizing during the civil rights movement. After the assassination of Dr. King, Jalil began to believe a more militant response to racism and injustice was necessary. He began to look towards the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense for leadership and was recruited into the BPP by school friends who had since become Panthers. Two months shy of his 20th birthday, Jalil was captured along with Albert “Nuh” Washington in a midnight shoot-out with San Francisco police. When Jalil was arrested, he was a high school graduate and employed as a social worker. Later, it was uncovered that Jalil was a victim of the FBI’s illegal COINTELPRO program designed specifically to neutralize and disrupt social movements working for racial and economic justice. Jalil was named specifically as a person to be targeted, and was subsequently charged with the murder of two NYC police officers. His conviction rested upon false evidence and perjured testimony. Jalil is currently incarcerated at Attica Correctional Facility outside Buffalo, NY. He is 60 years old, and has been behind bars for 40 years. Despite an exemplary prison record and a continued commitment to the struggle for racial justice, Jalil is consistently a victim of harassment and targeting at Attica. He is up for parole for the 5th time this June. ************************************ WHY PAROLE JALIL? While in San Quentin prison in California in 1976, Jalil launched the National Prisoners Campaign to Petition the United Nations to recognize the existence of political prisoners in the United States. Progressives nationwide joined this effort, and the petition was submitted in Geneva, Switzerland. As a result, the International Commission of Jurists then reported that political prisoners do in fact exist in the United States. Jalil was one of the founders of the Jericho Movement in 1997. Over 6,000 supporters gathered at the Jericho 1998 march in Washington DC and thousands more at a rally in the Bay Area to demand amnesty for US political prisoners on the basis of international law. The Jericho Amnesty Movement aims to gain recognition by the U.S. government and the United Nations that political prisoners exist in this country, and that on the basis of international law, they should be granted amnesty because of the political nature of their cases. Jalil has filed numerous lawsuits on behalf of prisoners. After many years of being denied the opportunity to attend college, Jalil graduated with a BS in Psychology and a BA in Sociology in 1994. During his imprisonment, Jalil has become a father and a grandfather. Jalil has worked as an educator of other inmates and practices organizing and advocacy whenever possible to ensure the most adequate, humane treatment for all people. He has been repeatedly punished for these activities, through physical abuse, formal discipline, and numerous prison transfers. Jalil is up for parole for the 5th time this June. After 40 years of incarceration, it is time for him to be free! Jalil is one of us. This is not a history lesson. The same struggles continue today. Buffalo’s progressive community continues the fight for food, housing, protection from police violence, racial and economic justice, and a self-determined community. ************************************ HELP RELEASE JALIL SO THAT HE CAN CONTINUE TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE US FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY. WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1. Send a personal letter in support of Jalil’s release to: Andrea W. Evans Chairwoman of Parole New York State Division of Parole 97 Central Ave Albany, NY 12206 Commissioner Brian Fischer New York State Division of Parole 97 Central Ave Albany, NY 12206 Please include Jalil’s DIN number 77A-4283, and refer to him by his given name, Anthony Bottom. If possible, a copy of this letter should also be sent to [email protected] to be kept on file. Letters of support can be as in-depth as you like, and should clearly express support for his release on parole to Buffalo. 2. Spread the word! Tell others about Jalil’s case, and educate them about the importance of releasing him this June. 3. Write Jalil to express your support, and ask him directly how you can help. Anthony J. PAROLE ACT THE PURPOSE OF PAROLE BOARD HEARINGS SHOULD BE EVALUATION NOT PUNISHMENT The S.A.F.E. Parole Act calls for : FACE-TO-FACE VIDEOTAPED PAROLE HEARINGS • In-person interviews , which ncreases the person applying for parole’s trust in the process and in the goal of reintegration, and creates an environment in which the parole board can more fully and fairly evaluate applicants * Videotaping interviews ensures that the final record is accurate and detailed, which allows for a more effective review of the hearing, and holds everyone accountable for their conduct * The cost of videotaping hearings are offset by saving the cost of stenographers and the cost of transcripts NO SECRETS; PAROLE APPLICANT SEES EVERYTHING IN THE FOLDER THAT THE PAROLE BOARD SEES * Results in greater transparency, fairness and trust in the parole process * The applicant can address errors or other information * Ensures a more accurate portrayal of the applicant on which the parole board can base its decision RELEASE DECISIONS BASED ON REHABILITATION AND PREPAREDNESS FOR RE-ENTRY AND REINTEGRATION INTO SOCIETY * The parole board is given specific, workable criteria by which to determine the probability that the applicant, if released, will live and remain at liberty without violating the law. * The NYS Transitional Accountability Plan (TAP) provides a meaningful process by which the Parole Board can make decisions regarding rehabilitation and release to parole supervision. CLEAR AND COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS SPELLING OUT WHAT THE PERSON MUST DO TO BE RELEASED * Alleviates the frustration and confusion experienced by parole applicants when they are not told what they can do in order to be released to parole supervision * This change holds everyone accountable — the applicant, the Department of Correctional Services & Community Supervision and the Parole Board. Gandhi Institute For Nonviolence 929 South Plymouth Avenue Rochester, NY This gathering is both for people who want to explore war tax witness/resistance and for those who want to be able to counsel others. Friday evening will be a gathering to share our stories. There will be people who have decided to redirect their taxes away from the military. And there will be those who are exploring these issues for the first time. Saturday will be a step by step process of learning how to counsel people exploring war tax resistance. At the same time, it will help people newer to this peace witness learn about it. People are strongly encouraged to attend the full gathering. There is no charge to attend (lunch will be provided Saturday); please come and explore this approach to noncooperation with war making. This gathering is sponsored by the Conscience And War Committee, a western/central New York Regional Quaker committee. Facilitators will be Ruth Benn and Ed Hedemann from the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee (NWTRCC). Ruth Benn has been the part time coordinator of NWTRCC for the past eight years. She spends much of her time in communication with war tax resisters across the country and the world and at regional meetings of people exploring these crucial issues. Ed Hedemann is a long-time tax resister who knows all or most of the “ins and outs” of this witness against war. Please register in advance so that we know how many meals to prepare, the needs for childcare and overnight hospitality, and the number of resource materials to produce.
