BUY NARI Tabletop Sponsors for September:
Century Marketing, Kitchens & Baths by
Briggs, ProSource, and Sherwin-Williams
It’s time to take a break from small business
and industry related issues and hear from
Nabil Haddad, owner of Haddad Restaurant
Group, which owns the local Winstead’s
restaurants, Plaza III Steakhouse, Fred P Otts
and Timbercreek Bar & Grill in Louisburg.
Haddad, a Palestinian Arab, became a wealthy
teenager by selling hamburgers from a kiosk
in Baghdad. According to Haddad, his real
restaurant career actually started in Kansas
City in 1962 where he began managing
McDonald’s restaurants. While the restaurant
industry created many ups and downs for
Haddad, his commitment to the community
kept him plugging away at various restaurant
concepts. There are now nine Winstead’s in
the Kansas City area and Plaza III has been in
business since 1964.
Thanks to Locks & Pulls for being a BUY NARI
tabletop sponsor. Left to right is Ken Gosnell, John
Hensley and Tom Orrick.
Come hear Haddad’s story and you’ll have a
chance to win some restaurant gift certificates.

The President’s Message
As I write this, it is officially hot as the temperature has been
upper 90’s for a few weeks now, and I’m ready for fall, or what
fall is like in the Midwest at least. It’s hot, and people are
starting to get flaky. I can’t even imagine why a 20+ year old
would think it is ok for his mom to call in sick for him, or
why someone would think that calling at 1:30pm to tell us
he is having car problems and probably won’t make it to work
that day is acceptable. And then act surprised when they get
disciplined for it… “But I called you and told you I wasn’t
coming…” Frickin’ Idiots! Ok, calm down Jerry.
I don’t know about your business, but at Top Master, we are
getting slammed. It seems that every school seemingly forgot
that they had remodels to do during the summer months,
and all are now in a rush to get things done before school
starts. A little planning sure does go a long way, right? Well,
I hope you plan on keeping up with your NARI schedule as
the year starts to close. The Golf Tournament is September
18th at Meadowbrook. Get your team signed up now! Our
community service project this year is with Cornerstones
of Care with a fun day planned on Saturday, October 4th at
Gillis. This is going to be a great chance for these deserving
kids to have some positive time with adults, have a BBQ, and
play some games. The Membership Drive is Oct. 9th at KC
Building Supply – have you invited someone you know to
join NARI? The Monster Bash Oct. 18th will again be at The
Gallery at ISC Surfaces--don’t miss it! We still need auction
items, please.
Keith Mader, Earthway Enterprises, and Cheyenne, brought 7-month
old Sierra to the NARI family picnic and she was definitely the youngest
in the good turnout of 120 people.
I look forward to seeing you all at these and other NARI
events!
See you soon,
Jerry Hillard, President

Board Minutes
August Board Meeting: NARI National is raising our dues portion by $20
effective July 1, 2015. Jan Burchett and Greg Heiman, CR, will meet with the
landlord to discuss the HVAC noise issue in the seminar room. Mike Guthrie
recapped the community service project where we will purchase bunk beds for
Cornerstones of Care.
September Board Meeting: The Board voted unanimously to not raise the
chapter dues in 2015 even though NARI National is raising our portion by $20
per member. Four applications were approved. Greg Heiman, CR, and Jan
Burchett met with the landlord and he agreed to cover the cost of dampening the
noise issue in the seminar room. NARI member City Wide Heating & Cooling
will perform the work for the landlord. Mike Guthrie reported that we are close
to purchasing 20 bunk beds for Cornerstones of Care. Jan Burchett discussed the
possible closing of Meadowbrook Country Club. A task force has been formed to
look at new locations for 2015.

REMY Entries Will Now Be
Online…No More Binders!
As you may know, NARI National launched the CotY Awards
program online last year. The process was well received by
the entrants across the country and a survey of those who
participated said the new online process saved them time and
money and was easy to navigate and understand.
NARI National and OMNI Solutions Group are now offering
chapters access to the online awards process. The chapter
awards program, known as the REMY for Kansas City
NARI entries, will be customized for our chapter’s typical
awards program. There are a few changes including no longer
requiring the homeowner to fill out a survey worth 15 points.
The entries will still be judged by members of another NARI
chapter, but that will be done online as well…no more shipping
binders across the country!
pricing of $165 per entry, the project must be completed,
paid, and submitted by the end of the day on October 17.
• The standard price per entry is $175 and that deadline
is November 3, 2014. To take advantage of the standard
pricing of $175 per entry, the project must be completed,
paid, and submitted by the end of the day on November 3.
• This year the REMY awards will also have a late entry
option (without penalty) for an additional $20 ($195 per
entry) if the project is completed, paid, and submitted
by the end of the day on November 10, 2014. If you are
running out of time, this may be a good option for you.

• Thomas O’Malley, age 66, passed away August 8 from
cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned
a BS from Harris State Teachers College. He served in the
Air Force and was deployed to Vietnam. In the mid 1980’s
he opened his own hardware business, Locks & Pulls. Tom
always had a joke and was blessed with the Irish gift of a
quick wit. He was a member of Saint Thomas More Parish
and active in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Tom was
an avid reader, enjoyed golf, and watching the Steelers.
Love of life and family sustained him through his illness.
Tom’s family invites you to honor Tom at an Irish Wake

• Ryan Patrick Scovell, 33 of Mission Hills, KS passed away
peacefully in his sleep on August 28. He is the son of Jim
and Mindy Scovell, Scovell Wolfe and Associates. Ryan
was a beloved son, loyal brother, and charming friend.
It’s said of many, but especially true of Ryan, that his joy
and generosity were infectious. He had a profound love
for his family and friends, and he was so easy to love. He
was known for spending all his money on others leaving
nothing for himself. More than once he gave the shirt off
his back, money in his wallet and the food off his plate (and
maybe yours). A special needs man, Ryan was cared for all
his life by people entirely devoted to his happiness. It was
Ryan’s desire to be an organ donor so we find comfort in
knowing how many people he may have helped. We are
deeply indebted to all those friends and family who loved
on Ryan his 33 years. Donations may be made to benefit
