Course Closure on Tuesday Mornings Several members have raised their concerns to us regarding the Management and Golf Committee’s decision to close the main course on Tuesday mornings for additional maintenance after each Monday Night League for the period of 1 September to 8 December 2014. This gesture was in actuality a recommendation of the Golf Committee as we felt that in order to facilitate the Monday Night League, regular maintenance on Mondays had to be cut short in preparation for the shot gun start. Another factor that came into play was the fact that due to the regular Tuesday night golfing schedule, there will be insufficient time for the course to rest. After much deliberation and upon heeding the advice of our President Bobby Wee, we have decided that in the interest of our members’ needs, we will not be closing all 18 holes. We have decided instead to do a rotation of 9 by 9 on alternate Tuesdays. Please be informed that this arrangement is not permanent and will only be in effect until the end of this 2nd season. The committee will therefore deliberate on the pros and cons of continuing with the Monday Night Men’s League. I do hope that members understand and continue supporting our policy of maintaining a balance between the needs of our members and our operational requirements. Club Lifestyle Scene F&B (Food and Beverage) is a vital component of our golfing package. We are pleased to inform that Lifestyle Chairman V.Chandranathan reported that food and beverage prices including beer and stout have been reduced recently. There is also an ongoing daily happy hour promotion which is just one of the many attractive deals being offered in a bid to improve the quality of food and services available at our Club. I certainly hope that members will continue to patronize our F&B outlet Golfers’ Terrace after a game of golf. Member Achievements Jurong Open 2014 The Jurong Open 2014 was held over a 3-day period from the 22nd of August to the 24th of August over 4 categories namely Ladies which took place on the 22nd, C division and Corporate on the 23rd and A and B Divisions on the 24th. Edwin Pereira who is a JCC member along with being a member of the Golf Committee was crowned overall Jurong Open Champion 2014. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to Edwin! As this was an open event, we received many entries from both local and Malaysian clubs which provided us with the opportunity to showcase our newly renovated course. I am extremely pleased to report that we received numerous accolades over the course of this 3-day event complimenting the excellent condition of our course specifically on the putting green. I would like to extend my thanks to all members who contributed to the astounding success of this event either by participating or sponsorship. Most importantly, I would like to thank all members for their kind understanding and support with regards to the course being closed for normal social play over this 3-day period. All in all we managed to raise some funds required to assist us in the building of our new short game practice area that will be located alongside the executive course. Congratulations are in order for our member Dicky Tan who did our club proud as part of the winning Singapore team at the recently concluded 31st ASEAN Senior Amateur Golf Championships held at Singapore Island Country Club (SICC). Keep our club’s flag flying high Dicky! Gentle Reminder on Course Etiquette We have received numerous requests from members to ban smoking on the course completely. The Committee felt that measures had to be implemented in order to effectively tackle the issue of cigarette butt litter. In order to be fair to all, it has been decided that smoking will only be allowed at Tee Boxes or inside the Buggy (for Buggy users only) where an ash tray is present. In the case of trolley pullers, smoking shall only be allowed at the Tee Boxes. We would also like to remind all golfers to always fill divots with sand, rake bunkers and repair ball marks on the Green. We thank you for your cooperation in eliminating litter on the course. We would also appreciate your assistance in educating fellow members on course etiquette. Thank you for your efforts in keeping our beautiful course pristine for the golfing pleasure of all. Ross Tan Captain 3 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 3 9/3/14 3:53 PM news Course Closed For Maintenance Roll Call Please be informed that with effect from 9 September 2014, alternate 9-holes will be closed on Tuesday Mornings for maintenance. This festive event provided the opportunity for new members to get acquainted with our General Committee and Sub-Committee members. More importantly, the event was held as a welcome gesture from the club to its new members. MCM night commenced at 6.30pm as guests started arriving, smiling and smartly dressed. Merriment was in the air as new members mingled with committee members. Our General Manager took to the stage at 7pm to welcome members to MCM night as well as inform everyone that dinner was served. Members were treated to a banquet of both Asian and Western culinary delights that included Chicken Chop with a traditional twist, fried rice, Batter-fried fish and soft shell crab amongst other scrumptious treats. Members also indulged in desserts galore that included fashionably French sweet treats such as cream puffs and chocolate éclairs. Around 7.30pm, our General Manager introduced the Vice President K.C Foong who delivered a speech in place of the president. The Vice President’s speech provided members with a speedy yet substantial summary of the club’s profitability as well as developments that were currently underway. To kick things off, he introduced the General Committee (newly elected as of 28 March). The Vice-President reassured members that the club’s lease had recently been extended to the year 2035 by the Singapore Land Authority and that the lease extension had been fully paid for. The focus then turned to the upcoming golf highlights for July and August 2014 along with other golfing events such as “Juniors on the Course” organized by Heartland Golf and the incredibly successful Monday Night Men’s League. GM updated members present on upgrading works that had taken place such as the building of safety nets and car-park maintenance. The proposed handicap lift for aging members, an upcoming project was also touched on briefly. Chris Holloway of Heartland Golf Schools concluded the evening’s events issuing an invitation to parents to enroll their little ones in the Junior Golfing program. We hope you will support our efforts to keep our greens immaculate so you can enjoy a perfect game of golf always. If you have ideas or stories to inspire or educate other golfers. Please share them with the Course Superintendent at [email protected]. Rolling Of Greens Recently the Club has invested in the purchases of 4 units of TruTurf EL-Tac R52 Electric Rollers to serve the purpose of carrying out rolling on the greens. What is the purpose of rolling the greens? Lightweight rolling is regarded as a means through which healthy turfgrass can be created. This of course results in golfer satisfaction as it increases green speeds and creates a firmer and smoother surface. Lightweight rolling on sand based greens does not cause a decrease in water infiltration or an increase in soil compaction. It is only under extremely intensive rolling that a reduction in water infiltration has been observed. In such instances, spiking may prove helpful in reducing the surface compaction. Besides increasing ball roll, some of the additional reported benefits of rolling include less dollar spot occurrence and cutworm damage. Rolling after light sand topdressing can also help in moving the sand down into the turf canopy. The benefits of rolling greens are therefore not only limited to golfers but yield agronomic benefits as well. Ball roll distances are similar between greens mowed at 3.1mm daily versus greens mowed at 4.0mm daily and rolled 3 times a week. Mowing at a higher height of cut can also help minimize stress to the turf. Additionally, ball roll can be maintained or increased by mowing less frequently and rolling during hot periods. While the increase in green speed is noticeable immediately after rolling, the effect diminishes over the days following the rolling. From our experience, we have also observed a drop of approximately 6 inches in the ball-roll distance within 2 hours after rolling. 6 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 6 9/3/14 3:53 PM club scene UPGRADING OF FACILITIES Our Club has recently been undergoing a face-lift with the following facilities being upgraded: Electronic Parking System Flushing of Driving Range Sub-Soil Drainage A shelter was installed to protect visitors using complimentary tickets from the rain during wet weather. Flushing of Driving Range sub-soil drainage was performed to alleviate water ponding during heavy downpours. The semi EPS will go fully automatic in mid-September as soon as the charging unit arrives from Japan. Water Proofing Works in Locker Rooms Water proofing works were carried out in the Clubhouse locker room in order to resolve the emergence of ground water. Reinstatement to Pro Shops at Clubhouse & Driving Range Reinstatement works were carried out at the Pro Shops located at the Club House and the Driving Range, sprucing up for take-over by the new operator. Painting of Rubber hump at Buggy Path The rubber hump located at the Buggy path area underwent routine painting works. 7 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 7 9/3/14 3:53 PM 8 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 8 9/3/14 3:53 PM 9 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 9 9/3/14 3:54 PM club scene Jurong Open Jurong Open 2014 was a smashing success with 398 participants vying for golfing glory in various divisions. The three day event consisted of Ladies Division on Friday 22 August, C & Corporate Division on Saturday 23 August and A & B Division on Sunday 24 August. We are pleased to announce that the overall Champion in the men’s category is our very own Edwin Pereira who is also a member of our Golfing Committee. L-R: Men Division overall Champion, Edwin Pereira with Captain Every good game should conclude with a celebration. Golfers indulged in fine dining and fun frolics at our post game parties over three days and were treated to a memorable entertainment agenda. L-R: Lady Captain with Ladies Division overall Champion, Natasha Wong T.G.I.F translated to thank god it’s for ladies only on Friday night at the after party following the Jurong Ladies Open on the 22nd of August. With wine in hand and dressed to the nines, the ladies made their way into the Ficus ballroom where an unforgettable girls night in awaited them. The icing on the cake that evening was of course Captain Ross Tan’s skillful saxophone renditions of 2 contemporary ballads. 23rd August was a night laced with decadence and delight for Gentleman Golfers who had participated in the Jurong C & Corporate Division earlier that day. This glitzy event was held at Fu Lin Men where gentlemen were serenaded by Singer Suzy Wong whose burlesque ballads served as a prelude to the pole dancing act which was the sizzling highlight of the evening. The gentlemen also enjoyed a round of fun and games in the form of an impromptu fashion show where they sashayed down a makeshift catwalk showing off silverware flaunting their self-concocted cutlery couture. An auction was also held in which the Jaermann & Stübi Trans-Atlantic timepiece worth $12,960 as well as Golf lessons with Mark Bates of Heartland Golf were up for grabs. After some boisterous bidding, the exquisite Swiss Golfing Time Piece was sold at $13,888 and the golf lessons raked in $2,000. The A & B Division game held on the 24th of August was plagued with relatively unfriendly weather but gloomy skies outside failed to dampen the spirits of these accomplished golfers as they made their way to Fu Lin Men restaurant to wind down after a satisfying game. Entertainment for the evening included Samba girls who gyrated to up-tempo tropical sounds and posed for photographs. Golfers also exhibited their vocal prowess during the karaoke session and were rewarded with red packets from their fellow golfers. The highlight 10 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 10 9/3/14 3:54 PM club scene of the evening’s entertainment agenda was a mind bending magic show by illusionist Jeremy Tan whose bag of tricks were impressive and puzzling all at the same time. All in all the post-game parties served as the perfect ending to three days of exceptional golfing out on our championship course. Numerous compliments from members and guests alike relaying how much they enjoyed playing the course specifically due to its exceptional conditions made Jurong Open 2014 an astounding success. The Club would therefore like to remind golfers to exercise more caution when playing on the course. Players should not commence playing until the players in front are out of range. It is the responsibility of all golfers to ensure that the flights in front are well out of range before executing their shot even if they have left the green. Please warn other golfers by shouting if you think your ball may be in danger of hitting them in front or at another hole. All flight mates should shout out “fore” at a volume that is loud enough in order to ensure that other golfers will hear you. If your shot lands close to other golfers in front or at any hole, please move forward immediately and apologize to the golfer. Please do not wait till after the game has ended to apologize. If your shot landed close to any golfers in front or at any hole, move forward immediately to apologize to the golfers. Do not wait until after the game to apologize. We are confident that adhering to these simple rules will provide all golfers with a safe and pleasant golfing experience at our course. 12 Sep oct 2014 layout.indd 12 9/3/14 3:54 PM golf Club / Intermediate And Crocodile Championship Best 16 qualifiers from each division would play the subsequent 3 rounds of the championship. Your arduous journey on the road to optimal fitness however does not have to be travelled alone. Please welcome our new addition to the JCC fitness team, our Assistant Gym Instructo Kenric Wan who will be coaching you alongside our Gym Instructor Yusoff. We are confident that Kenric’s diverse range of expertise will go a long way in helping you achieve your fitness goals. Wan Xueming Kenric Kenric comes highly qualified with a 3-year diploma in Sports and Exercise Science and is currently pursuing a degree in Exercise and Sports at Edith Cowan University. The focal point of his expertise is centred on designing training programmes to facilitate a diverse range of the population and prescribing nutrition plans tailor made to your unique fitness requirements. Kenric’s prior experiences include serving as a personal trainer at Personal Training Singapore where he formulated fitness programmes consisting of training, weight supervision and nutrition plans. His diverse repertoire also extended to being a Physical Education Teacher at Huamin Primary School where he conducted Physical Education (P.E) lessons for little ones and assisted the school’s Head of Department of Physical Education in planning the agenda of school sporting events. Unleash Your Super Self With Strength Training By Your Gym Instructor Yusoff Lifting weights that feel heavier than what we are used to subjects our muscles to a considerable degree of stress weakening them temporarily in the process. The body’s natural response to this weakened state is to rebuild muscles in order to ensure that they are equipped to cope with a similar force exerted on them in future. Depending on your current level of strength, and individual goals, the level of intensity must be high enough to ensure that the body recognizes the need to make strength improvements. The intensity must also be repeatedly increased or the body will get accustomed to it and no additional improvements will be visible. One of the more prominent results of weight lifting is the increased muscle mass which brings forth en entire host of changes in the body. The first is an increase in metabolism, which basically speeds up all chemical reactions in the body. A simple analogy would be in a situation where you gradually press the accelerator of your car down and the car moves faster utilizing more petrol as the revs increase. This is effectively what your body does when your metabolism increases as it is able to move faster, be stronger and as a result consumes more calories even at rest. A comprehensive strength training program ensures that your body will become generally tougher leaving you less susceptible to injury as you are less likely to suffer breakages if your bones are strong and are protected by formidable surrounding tissues. Strength Training also aids in recovery from existing injuries as stronger muscles around an injured area can accelerate the healing process. An excellent training program should consist of exercises to work out all parts of the body to ensure whole body strength as omitting major muscle groups will result in imbalances to the detriment of the individual’s health. Training your visually enticing muscles only such as biceps, chest, and abdominals might seem appealing but will inevitably result in poor posture and uneven overall strength. Safety is paramount in Strength Training as our common goal is to lead a healthier lifestyle. The integrity of a training program is of utmost importance in order to ensure that individuals receive the correct balance of strength while taking into account postural imbalances and the individual’s goals. Warm up and Cooling Down exercises are essential to minimizing injuries and maximizing performance and as such extremely very heavy weights should only be lifted in the presence of an assistant. All exercises should promote good posture, typically an open chest, neutral spine and firm stomach. Strength training is highly beneficial to those seeking a healthy lifestyle if the programs are performed safely and with correct technique. The boost in metabolism aids weight loss and management, improves posture, reduces chances of injury and counteracts many of the infirmities that develop with age. Most importantly lowered cholesterol levels reduce chances of contracting Coronary Heart Disease. Golfers will be able to make bookings online for your convenience. We welcome the following new members to the JCC family and bid farewell to those who transferred their memberships.
