This year marks the 16 th year of tradi on and excellence here at SGIA. Our beau ful campus has added some new faces to our faculty and staff, and we are excited to work with all of you and help our students achieve success that is typical of SGIA. We are proud that SGIA provides students with a wide variety of ac vi es and opportuni es. We hope that our students will take advantage of all that is available to them. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me during the election. It is a great honor to be in this position and I will do my best to make the most of this school year. This year will be a busy time for the council as we look forward to teambuilding, social reach out and fundraising events. There are still more programs being planned but if anyone has a good idea, feel free to write a memo or talk to any of the council members and we’ll try to consider it. Parents, administrators, students and visitors graced this edifying event. The day was filled with fervour, zest and enthusiasm in the school. Extravaganzas of activities were conducted from ECC to Grade XII. All activities were designed to contribute towards all-round development of young Globalites. The celebrations commenced with the parade of four houses: Red Eagle, Yellow Komodo, Blue Tiger and Green Rhino which later on showcased their different yells and dances to excite the crowd. Ibu Dewi, current Head of School, welcomed everyone . She emphasized that the school promotes moral and academic excellence in a caring and secure environment, and seeks to provide opportunities for the fullest realization of our children’s potential so that they are better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Games for parents and students were also organised by the PE department. The different houses competed in fun and exciting indoor activities which promoted sportsmanship, camaraderie and oneness among all the teams. Overall, the event was a tremendous success. The SGIA community gathers together as one family. “The school seeks to provide opportunities for the fullest realization of our children’s potential so that they are better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow.” SEKOLAH GLOBAL INDO ASIA Page 3 www.sgiaedu.org SECONDARY DEPARTMENT NEWS LETTER OCTOBER, 2014 SGIA STUDENTS RECOG NIZED IN YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION Proving that SGIA students are holistic learners who excel in different academic areas and in arts , three students emerged victorious in the recently held “Young Artists Competition” on September 16, 2014 in Sekolah Yos Sudarso, Batam. Vivian from Grade 12, Eugene and Sallyna from Grade 11 proudly represented the school and were selected as winners. They were trained by their talented Arts teacher, Pak Inyo. SGIA COMMUNITY COMMEMORATES RI’S INDEPEN DENCE By Pak Gun-Gun and Pak Widyantara To commemorate the 69th independence of the Republic of Indonesia, Sekolah Global Indo-Asia conducted the flag ceremony in the Sports’ Hall on August 18, 2014. Students, teachers, staff and school heads were in full force to support the said activity. Formal procedure for this 17th August ceremony was held in a manner different from the usual Monday flag ceremony. It was conducted using the “formation 12” (12 students for raising flag team), accompanied by music instruments performance by students and music teachers of SGIA. The said program is one way of instilling nationalism and patriotism to one’s country. CAMBRIDGE CONDUCTS TRAINING FOR BIOLOGY TEACHERS By Mr. Zacarias Valenzuela To address the need of Biology teachers, Cambridge International Examination conducted a twoday seminar training for Intermediate AS/ A Level Biology (9700) held on September 4-5, 2014 in Taylor’s College, Subang Jaya, Malaysia. Mr. Zack was given the privilege to attend the twoday seminar training. The event highlighted relevant topics such as marking and changes in the curriculum. Notable speakers and delegates discussed on how to mark students’ papers highlighting the particular points that the examiner expects from the students’ answers. Delegates were also given the chance to do a practical activity in their laboratory which enabled them to learn how to apply the approaches in real classroom/ laboratory setting. Sansano “With hard work comes success” has been the mantra of the SMP Global basketball players as they patiently waited for a long time to be in a basketball final match– and they soared high this time being the champion in the recently concluded Mondial Cup on October 1, 2014 held at the Sekolah Mondial Basket ball court. Pak Ronald, the team’s coach and the school’s PE teacher, prepared the players by having through rigorous training every BENNY NG NAMED MOST VALUABLE PLAYER Passion, determination and commitment to excel made Benny Ng, a Grade 7 SGIA student, the Most Valuable Player in the Mondial Cup. With his agility and innate skills in playing basketball, there is no doubt that this student will go a long way in pursuing his ambition to be a basketball player . Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Everything paid off, as they scored 61 points over Mondial’s 33 points. SEKOLAH GLOBAL INDO ASIA Page 5 www.sgiaedu.org SECONDARY DEPARTMENT NEWS LETTER OCTOBER, 2014 GRADE 7 STUDENTS EXP ERIENCE FIRST-HAND LEARNING Providing quality instruction can be best achieved when learners experience it first hand. This has been realized when the Grade 7 students of Sekolah Global Indo-Asia went to Singapore last October 3, for their educational trip. Different places were visited by the group to enrich the theories and concepts they have gauged in the classroom. For Science, they went to Gardens by the Bay to visit the myriad kinds of flora and fauna; for Social Studies, they learned about Industrialization particularly the mode of transport in Land Transport Authority. Additionally, they also went to Arts– GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE S TUDENTS VISIT SUNGEI WETLAND RESERVE By Ms. Carrie To enrich the Grade 9 and 10 students’ knowledge on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Loss, they went for an educational trip to Sungei Buloh Mangrove Wetland Reserve in Singapore on September 12, 2014. The students were supervised by Ms. Jovelyn, Ms. Carrie and Pak Ronald. Overall, the trip was filled with learning, fun and enjoyment. The students were supervised by Ms. Charo, Mr. Roger, Mr. Eko and Mr. Lee.
