Grand Opening of “River to Bay,” CMM’s New Aquarium Exhibit
Experience the Underwater World of Life in the Bay
It’s Simply Extraordinary! We can’t wait for you to see our new exhibit on
October 11 at the grand opening of River to Bay: Reflections and Connections at
the Calvert Marine Museum. The new aquarium exhibit will be an immersive
experience - introducing guests to the amazing diversity of animal life found in
the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The exhibit highlights three unique bay
habitats: the deep open waters, the brackish coastal shallows, and freshwater
tidal tributaries. In each habitat, guests can explore the interconnections between animals, their habitats, and humans. Dave Moyer, Curator of Estuarine
Biology and part of the project team puts it this way, “River to Bay offers exciting
and engaging ways for our guests to appreciate the unknown world that lurks
beneath the surface of the Chesapeake Bay.” In order to convey this message,
Photo courtesy Rachel Reese: Sneak a peek at
guests will find themselves standing below the waterline, making them part of
our Seahorse Tank “Hippocampus Haven”
the underwater environment. The underlying message is that all living things
exist in one dynamic, interconnected system – a system under pressure and in need of help.
The Calvert Marine Museum received a FY2013 Museums for America grant for $142,500 from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal granting agency, to renovate the Estuarine Biology Gallery. This
award is being matched with a $25,000 grant from the Maryland Heritage Area Authority, $35,000 in proceeds from
the 2014 Bugeye Ball, a $50,000 donation from a longtime supporter, and over $250,000 in labor. “It is significant”,
notes Jim Langley, Curator of Exhibits, “that we are doing almost everything in-house, both on the exhibit side that
guests see, and behind-the-scenes in the back-up areas. Most museums can’t do that.”
The new exhibit introduces many interactive elements, inviting guests not only to engage their senses, but also
their minds with hands-on experiences. Several new touch screen computers invite visitors to hear fish sounds, learn
about Bernie Fowler and his legendary wade-ins, and play learning animal adaptation games. Complementing the
gallery’s new look are six new aquariums housing new species such as chain dogfish (a small shark), octopus, smallmouth bass, crappie, painted turtle, tessellated darter, and many more. In the Eco-Invaders gallery, we are adding a
new tank to house the beautiful, but highly invasive lionfish.
“Celebrating Chesapeake Bay diversity is integrated into every facet of the new exhibit,” states Sherrod Sturrock,
deputy director and part of the project team. “The more people know about the bay, the more they value it, and we
believe that will result in a desire to do more to preserve it.” The exhibit includes a new website called Team Chesapeake that anyone can join to learn more about the exhibit, give feedback, and discover ways to get involved.
Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD), October 11-12
Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD) is celebrating 37 years on October 11 and 12 at the Calvert Marine
Museum. PRAD is one of the longest running festivals in Southern Maryland and all members of the family can enjoy
free fun from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is free and complimentary parking is available.
The arts and craft show with over thirty artists will be located in the museum’s parking lot along with and local
food vendors on both days of the festival. The two music stages will host live performances including Calvert Dance
Band, Jay Armsworthy, Folk Salad Trio, Pond Scum, and many more. Children can build their own toy boats while
the whole family enjoys free cruises aboard the Wm. B. Tennison, Nathan of Dorchester, and Dee of St. Mary’s.
Paddle in canoes in the boat basin throughout the weekend. Dozens of non-profit groups that celebrate the river in
a wide variety of ways will offer exhibits, demonstrations, displays, and educational activities about green products,
recycling, oyster farming, native plants, wildlife, restoration efforts, live animals, and more. Back by popular demand
is “Bounty of the Patuxent” in the Corbin Pavilion. On Saturday, local wineries from Port of Leonardtown, Solomons
Island, Perigeaux and Running Hare Vineyard will offer wine tasting. A wonderful array of fall produce, potted mums,
honey and homemade jellies/jams and lavender products will also be for sale.
The annual PRAD Parade with a one mile route along Solomons Island Road will begin Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Non-profit organizations are welcome to join the parade with cash prizes offered for best float entries. To enter your
float or organization, contact Randy Geck at [email protected].

CSM President Earns Pacesetter Award
Dr. Brad Gottfried Recognized for Building Community, Business Partnerships
College of Southern Maryland President Dr. Brad Gottfried has been selected for the 2014 District 1 Pacesetter
Award by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) for his strong focus on the college’s
marketing, communications, advocacy and fundraising campaigns. “NCMPR presents an annual Pacesetter Award in
each of its seven districts to a community college chief executive who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment
to marketing and communications at his or her college, and who has demonstrated strong personal leadership in the
institution’s outreach endeavors. Congratulations [to Gottfried] on this well-deserved honor,” said NCMPR District
1 Director Mary De Luca. “Much of CSM’s success can be attributed to Dr. Gottfried’s passion for lifelong learning and
his embrace of the college’s role within the community,” CSM Board of Trustees Vice Chair Dorothea Holt Smith wrote
in her nomination letter. “As CEO for nearly eight years, Dr. Gottfried has transformed the college, its students and
the community through his ability to communicate and demonstrate a vision of a stronger Southern Maryland. He
consistently communicates the values of CSM and the focus on student access, success and achievement. His devotion
to student access and success is demonstrated through the creation of his personal endowed and annual scholarship
funds at CSM,” added CSM Foundation Chair Christine Rush, a 1987 graduate of the college.
Gottfried assumed a leadership role in conducting market research, and communicating and collaborating with
local industries significant to regional workforce opportunities, such as naval bases, defense contractors, CEOs, educators and funders to create an innovative Institute for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (ISTEM) Strategic
Plan and interactive website. These partnerships have resulted in growth of a STEM pipeline through new programs,
partnerships and activities. "I am honored to be selected as the 2014 recipient of the District 1 Pacesetter Award by
the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. I share this honor with the entire CSM team who work so
hard to advance our institution and our region. They set a high standard that serves us well," said Gottfried.
Gottfried will be presented with the Pacesetter award at a luncheon on Oct. 13 at the Gaylord National Resort
and Conference Center at the National Harbor. He is one of seven finalists for the national Pacesetter Award to be
presented at NCMPR’s conference in Portland, Oregon next March.

admissions for treatment of prescription opioid misuse increase by 400% from 2008-2012. The rate of treatment
admissions for heroin use more than doubles (230%) in that time frame .
Pharmaceutical opioid and heroin abuse is also an increasing workplace concern. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about three fourths of those 18 and older who use illegal drugs also work.
Professional workplaces are not immune. In a large study of illicit drug use in a highly educated workforce, 42 percent
of respondents reported using mood-altering prescription drugs. Consequences of on-the-job drug use can lead to
increased accidents and injuries and decreased levels of productivity and morale, not only among those employees
with substance use problems but also among those who work alongside them.
Rising incidents of opiate addiction in the community at large also affect the workplace, as employees with an
addicted child, partner or parent struggle to cope. In a national study of employees, more than one third said that
at least one of their coworkers had been distracted, less productive or absent from work because of drug or alcohol
problems in the family.
The good news is that greater awareness of the issue can help employers better safeguard their workforce and
their business. Employers do not need to be counselors or police officers to make a positive impact on this health
issue. Join Sheriff Timothy Cameron and Dr. Kathleen O’Brien of Walden on November 19th to learn more. Among
the resources made available will be local statistical information, tips, resources, and stories of individuals in recovery
who previously engaged in workplace drug use.

CSM Staff Spruce up Leonardtown Library Grounds
College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus staff participated in the United Way of St. Mary’s County Day of Caring by
sprucing up the grounds of the Leonardtown Library on Friday, Sept.
5. The project is a community effort coordinated by the United Way
of St. Mary's County whereby teams volunteer to assist community
agencies with projects that may otherwise go undone. “This program
was a wonderful opportunity to work with colleagues and get to know
students on a different level. It is definitely a program the Leonardtown Campus will support again,” said Bowman-Goldring.
