What’s it like to be you?
Do not forget to show hospitality to
strangers, for by so doing some people have
shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
~Hebrews 13:2
During my sabbatical I worked on my Doctor
of Ministry dissertation which looks at the theology
of hospitality. Last year I worked with the men of the
church and the ONA Action committee to study some
important questions – What does it mean to welcome
people in? How do we make space for people in our
lives, in our homes, in our church, and in our hearts?
Are there other ways that the church can be “church”
outside of Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.?
In order to learn more about each other (an
important step in hospitality), we can ask the
question, “What is it like to be you?” In many ways
our congregation is made up of people who are very
different from one another. We all come from
different backgrounds that were filled with a variety
of childhood experiences. We are made up of a
variety of opinions that have been shaped by life
experiences, employment opportunities, and personal
encounters. Some of us have been touched by tragedy
and grief. Some of us have encountered loss –
spiritual, emotional, or physical. Some of us are
unhappy in our marriage or in our work, others are
struggling with addiction. Some people are constantly
worried about every little thing while others seem to
be gliding through life without a care. And what
about free time? What do you like to do when you
have a few moments for yourself? What is fun for
you? Do you yearn to get outside and get active or
does reading or doing crafts suit you better? And
where is God in all of this?
We are all such unique individuals! It can be
hard to welcome someone in and be hospitable to that
person when we have no understanding of who that
person is, why they act the way that they do, what
makes them “tick”. On the second Sunday of each
month we will explore that question as we hear
members of our congregation reflect on the question –
what is it like to be you?
•
•
•
•
What influences you?
What is important to you?!
What worries you?!
What makes your heart sing?!
!
If we take the time to listen to each other’s
stories, it will help us to understand one another. We
can have more compassion for each other when we
get a glimpse into what the life of “the other” is like.
Part of hospitality is really listening to each other –
it’s trying to understand that person who may seem so
different to us. When we take the time to ask “what is
it like to be that person” it helps us bridge the gap
between us so that we can learn from one another.
And that will help us be a stronger, more
compassionate congregation.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Susan J. Foster

An Alphabet Invitation
A Congregation that reads (and prays…and reflects…and learns) together…
Can work together to do God’s will!
This is an Invitation to everyone in our congregation to read Illuminated Life by Joan Chittister.
The sermons during the month of October will be based on this book.
The book offers a short daily reflection for 26 days. Each reading is based on a letter in the
alphabet. The goal is to have as many households in our congregation read this book so that together
we can discuss it, learn from it, and grow in living out our faith. Each week you are invited to read the
letters assigned to that week – you can read one a day or “binge read” them, whatever works in your
schedule.
“From Abandonment to Zeal, this alphabet of monastic values will help you to experience peace and love
in the midst of life’s pressures and problems.”

News from the Pews
Feel free to share your news with us. Just email Heidi at [email protected] or call the church
office at 928-7449.
Debbie Sherman was selected as this year’s honoree in the Woodstock Fair’s Past Presidents Contest. The recipe
she chose for the contestants follows:
Jewish Apple Cake
5 or 6 medium apples, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Place above ingredients in bowl and let sit while making batter.
3 cups unsifted flour
4 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla
2 ¼ cups sugar
1 cup oil
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup orange juice
Mix batter ingredients. Place in prepared tube pan – one layer of batter and one layer of apples. Repeat until all used,
finishing with a layer of apples arrange on top.
Preheat oven to 350°. Bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Thank you!!!
Our church is blessed by the work of many volunteers. Every bit of effort and caring helps the church live out its
calling to be the Body of Christ. This month we especially would like to thank . . .

Nursery Care Volunteers Needed!
Nursery care is an important way to show God’s love to the littlest ones of our
congregation (infant to pre-K). By signing up for nursery care, you are giving
the parents with young children the opportunity to enrich their spiritual growth
during the worship service.
A nursery care schedule is posted on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall as
you enter the Hospitality Room (library). Please take a moment to sign up for a week. Let us all thank God
for His precious children.
Thoughts about announcements in church
This reflection was written by a pastor of a church in Manhattan. Somehow it heartens me to know that churches
struggle with the same issues, whether in a downtown metropolis or in a country village. Here is some food for
thought about what we do (and do not) share during worship…
Announcements
Donna Schaper
“…whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
~ Matthew 16:19
The most controversial subject in my congregation is the announcements, seconded only by joys and concerns. There
someone else speaks besides those hired to speak. Half of our congregation thinks the other half talks too much.
Some people dominate the announcements or joys and concerns in such a way as to remove the holiness from them.
If you speak every week, and others only speak every quarter, what does that mean? Self-congratulation or liking to
hear the sound of your own voice both come to my mind. Neither is a compliment.
An announcement is an invitation to others to love something like you do. If you don't invite them, they won't know
of your love, or you. If you over-invite them, or compete with them for airtime, they will not come. They won't really
feel invited, but instead bound. Also a joy is a joy is a joy. People know it when they see it and if you have one every
week, good for you.
A concern is very different. The pancreas of your second cousin twice removed is rarely important enough to take up
2 minutes of 60 or 75 minutes of collective time. Quietly suffering is better than talking if the injury is distant. If the
injury is close, though, surely speak up.
What you say on earth matters on earth and in heaven. What you choose not to say also matters. Or more clearly put,
what you do and don't do, or loose and bind, matters.
Prayer
Help us, O God, to loose and bind, speak or hold our tongues, with a sense of community that manages our own egos.

What did I do during my sabbatical?
I listened to many sermons on-line. I tried to listen to a diverse sampling of preachers from across the
country. I always want to learn more about preaching and the best way to do that is to listen to gifted
preachers.

2nd Annual Holiday Art Show and Sale
Mark your calendar… Saturday, December 6th, 10 am- 3 pm
I have advertised for artists for this show and have 12 registered to date. Last
year we had 22 vendors set up and I am looking forward to hearing from others
in the next few weeks. Please pass this information on to any one you know
who may be interested.
I am also looking for help! Last year we had a very successful refreshment table set up and a penny social
table. Each of the vendors contributed an item to the penny social and names were drawn. Please see me if
you are able to help at either of these tables. I hope to find someone who can run each of the tables and find
volunteers to help. And then there is always set up and clean up!!
Please mark the date on your calendar and pass this info on to your friends. Please call me if you have any
questions or could help organize refreshments or the penny social. Thanks in advance. Last year the church
made $1,260.00 on this one day Show. Let's do it again and make it even more!!

Interested in reading Scripture in worship?
One sign of a healthy Congregational church is to have many members of the congregation
participating in worship and other activities of the church. One way that you can help is to read Scripture
during worship on Sunday morning.
If you are interested in being one of our Scripture readers, please contact Pastor Sue at
[email protected] or call the church office at 860-928-7449.

Wander under the stars through a corn maze in the dark of night. Bring a flash and friends. After solving
the mystery of the maze, we will have s’mores and storytelling. Come prepared with your favorite campfire
story. There will be a fee for this event. Check our Facebook Page “Youth Group 14-15” for the details.

CHILDREN'S PROGRAM NEWS
Field Trip – Sunday, October 5
Communion Unit – 4th Grade
On Sunday, October 5, immediately following church, we
will carpool to the Heifer International Global Harvest
Festival in Rutland, MA.
As part of the Sunday School program, 4th grade students
are invited to take part in a Communion Celebration
where they learn about the sacrament of Communion.
Your child will prepare for a Communion Celebration on
Sunday, November 2nd, to commemorate an important
step in their spiritual lives. There are some important
dates that we would like you to be aware of:
As you know, this year, the Sunday School offering will
be given to Heifer International. Over the past few weeks,
the children have been learning about the animals that are
part of this program.
The Global Harvest Festival is a great way for the children
to join in internationally themed harvest celebrations, meet
the farm animals, experience how to milk a goal, make
cheese and beeswax candles, roast coffee, and much more.
The cost is $10 per vehicle. Additional details will be
shared via email.
Halloween Party
Bring Your Friends!
th
Children in grades pre-K through 4 are invited to the
Halloween Party on Sunday, October 26, from 2pm to
4pm in Fellowship Hall. There will be games and crafts
and refreshments will be served.
Everyone should wear a costume – even the parents.
I hope the children will bring their friends for a hauntingly
good time.
Halloween Hay Ride and Camp Fire
Children in grades 5 – 8 are invited to join us on a
Halloween Hay Ride on Sunday, October 26, from 5:30pm
to 8:00pm. We will meet at my house and ride through
fields and then finish with a camp fire, ghost stories and
smores.
Raindate: Saturday, November 1

Hands On Bible Curriculum
Teachers and Shepherds Needed
If you are interested in being a teacher or a shepherd for
the Sunday School Hands On Bible Curriculum program,
please see me during Coffee Hour or e-mail me. You
don’t have to have children in the program to volunteer to
be a teacher or a shepherd. Volunteering will allow you
to get to know the children better and have the
opportunity to interact and share some of your
experiences with them. You will help them learn about
their faith, community and the church which often allows
you to grow spiritually as well. I can promise you that
spending time with the children will be a rewarding and
inspiring experience.
Module 2 – October 12 – November 2
Module 3 – November 9 – December 7
Note: Module 3 is five weeks as the children will be
together on November 23 to make Thanksgiving baskets.

Dear God,
Enlighten what’s dark in me
Strengthen what’s weak in me
Mend what’s broken in me
Bind what’s bruised in me
Heal what’s sick in me
and lastly…
Revive whatever peace and love has died in me.
Amen.
Grace of God
The grace of God means something like:
Here is your life.
You might never have been, but you are,
because the party wouldn't have been complete without you.
Here is the world.
Beautiful and terrible things will happen
Don’t be afraid.
I am with you.
Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, a heart that forgives
the worst, a mind that forgets the bad, and a soul that never loses faith in God.
