A recent popular item of discussion here on Long Island has been the issue of red light and school zone speed cameras. Parcularly the debate over their genuine purpose. Are they meant to promote greater traffic safety and therefore beer protect us? Or are they primarily a source of revenue? A recent story in the newspaper detailed the experience of one person who received ckets for a failure to come to a complete stop before making a right on red at an intersecon she frequented daily. It took several weeks for her to get the cket and therefore was unaware of an acon that needed to be corrected and so she connued to make the same mistake daily unl the first cket arrived. The queson, therefore, is if the law which allowed the red light camera to be placed was meant to improve safety, should she not have been made aware of the error sooner? If the goal is revenue, then delaying noficaon makes sense. In today’s gospel, Jesus is asked about the greatest of all the laws. The answer he gives is one that also acknowledges the purpose of God’s law, which is, of and for, the purpose of love. Think about the Ten Commandments: they can be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws about loving God: have no strange gods; don’t take the Lord’s name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our neighbor: honor your parents; don’t kill; don’t commit adultery; don’t steal; be honest; and don’t covet your neighbor’s spouse or property. When we follow the law , we do so not simply to avoid punishment but to perpetuate and sustain the love that Jesus preaches. Ulmately, all the dos and don’ts of the law are just specific guidelines describing what love looks like. This is very helpful for those mes when love doesn’t come so easily to us. But as Jesus instructs us today, the goal is to grow in the kind of love that naturally leads us to want to do what’s best. When we understand the purpose of the value of law, secular, natural or divine, it is easier for us to fulfill it and even desire it October 26, 2014 3 BISHOP PAUL WALSH - Last Saturday aernoon, we received word that one of our rered auxiliary bishops had passed away. Bishop Walsh served the western part of our diocese for eleven years. Prior to that, he served for 20 years in parishes in our diocese as an associate and pastor. During those years he served on faculty at Providence College, as director of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington D.C. and pastor of St. Vincent Ferrer in Manhaan. This is especially significant because Deacon Joe has baptized so many of the children in our parish! October 26, 2014 5 Holy Family School…“making a difference, one child at a time” School News REFLECTING ON THE WORD (from Sadlier Publications) Gospel Matthew 22: 34-40 When you heard the Pharisee's question to Jesus, did you know what the answer would be? If not, now would be a good time to learn the answer by heart. Which is the greatest commandment? Jesus quotes the law of love in two parts. First we must love God with our entire selves. Out of that love of God grows the love of others. We must love our neighbors with as much care and concern as we have for ourselves. Does it seem very easy to love? As we try to do it, we will find it can be very difficult. Why do you think most people say that this is the most important teaching of Jesus? Why is it called the "law of love"? How does this sum up the Ten Commandments and other teachings of Jesus? Who are our neighbors? What does "as yourself" mean? On Friday, October 17, Holy Family School Teachers, Administration, Staff, and students donated money to “dress down”; meaning teachers were dressed comfortable and casual and students were out of uniform. The money raised was donated to Making Strides for Breast Cancer research. That Sunday, October 19, many gathered at Jones Beach to walk in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk and raise more money and raise local awareness for this worthy cause. In keeping with our tagline, as seen in both pictures, students, faculty and staff also purchased tee shirts that read: “Holy Family School, making a difference, one step at a time”.
