Southern Slammers Volleyball Club A member of the Southern Regional Volleyball Association www.southernslammersvb.com [email protected] Our Mission and Goals •Southern Slammers goal is to create an environment that will allow each athlete to grow individually and as a member of a team, athletically and emotionally. This goal will only be accomplished when we work together; coaches, parents and athletes. •While winning is important and fun, winning is defined more by attitude than points. Learning to work as a member of a team, putting team before self, and the importance of each athlete’s contributions to the team’s success is a fundamental principal that the club will work by. The belief that on a successful team there are no hero’s or zero is one that will be reinforced at each practice and match. •Developing the individual player is key to a successful club; improving their knowledge of the game (skills), their ability to accept compliments and criticism (self-confidence), and their approach to practice and matches (attitude) are the primary fundamentals the club will build on. •Working together with coaches and parents to build an organization where everyone is part of the team. To be successful and grow, Southern Slammers has to be managed by similarly minded parents that are focused on the growth of the athlete and not the profit of the organization, yet ever mindful that it is a business with cost and expenses. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 3 Our Club Southern Slammers is a family focused club established in 2012 by parents of Effingham County volleyball athletes with the goal of expanding the opportunity for athletes to participate in the sport of volleyball. The sole purpose of our club is to offer young girls (and boys) between the ages of 10 and 18 years old, the opportunity to increase their knowledge, understanding and skill level, playing the sport of Volleyball. Our goal is to produce a team that will be respected by other clubs, not only for its playing ability, but also for its performance off the court as well. We will encourage competitive play as well as good sportsmanship. General Club Information Southern Slammers is a pay-to-play sports organization. The club operates under the guidance of the Southern Region Volleyball Association of USA Volleyball. The club is managed by the Club Director who shall oversee the operation of the club and matters related to finance, facilities, equipment, scheduling, coaching, players, team make-up and complaints. The coaching staff makes up the coaching committee; they participate in decisions related to club operations and to assist with matters pertaining to players, team selection, practice and game management, as they are called upon. We also have a parent council that assist in the operations and management of the club. Participation in the Parent is on a voluntary basis, and no reduction in fees or dues is given to any member of the council. The parent council will assist the director in the operation of the club, and serve as a point of contact for all players and parents to assist with issue and grievance resolution as defined in the parent and player code of conduct. We have tried to design the club to allow input from all of the talented associates on our staff. The coaches are selected based on referral, performance, credentials and attitude. Our coaches receive uniform shirts, insurance coverage, training and a stipend for their travel and inconvenience otherwise; their commitment is primarily voluntary and driven basically by their love of the game. The players are selected based on try-out performance, athletic potential, work ethic, drive, attitude and commitment. Typically each team will maintain a team roster of (8) to (10) players for 15 and up and (9) to (12) for 14 and under. The club philosophy is to play each player as equally as possible however, many factors are considered and the final decision left to the discretion of the team coach. Tryout Procedure While parents are permitted to attend tryouts we ask that you refrain from all interactions with your athlete during the process. Coaches may place athletes in situations that they may not be familiar with or comfortable with. Please allow the coaching staff to execute the tryout process with no interaction from the parents. We will encourage the athletes to set gather in an area away from the parents and even during water breaks they should remain with the group. Tryouts are a controlled process, and the athlete will be evaluated from beginning to end. The purpose for this is to create a productive environment free from as many distractions as possible. During the tryouts our club insurance only covers the athlete and does not cover any other members of their family. Our team players will be selected on a try-out performance, coach ability, Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 4 athletic potential, work ethic, willingness to be at team member, attitude and commitment. They will be evaluated on skill execution, their ability to pass, set, serve, and hit. They are also watched during a game situation for their intrinsic traits. After the initial tryout, the coaching staff will meet to determine which girls will be asked to play for our program. Athletes will be notified by email and will be required to sign the SSCVB Parent and Player Agreement along with a Player Code of Conduct ( parents will be required to sign the Parent Code of Conduct). You must return the signed contract with your first installment of the fees within seven days of our offer, or it may be withdrawn. Once a contract has been signed the player is not allowed to play for any other USAV club without written permission from both Club Directors, and a completed request to transfer has been submitted. Fees are non-refundable! Playing Other Sports School sports and activities are an integral part of the scholastic experience and we wtill make every effort to schedule practices around some of these other activities. However, it is recommended that if an athlete is going to miss more than 20% of practices and/or tournaments, those families reconsider participation in our program. Missing such a significant amount of time does not make it cost effective for the families and makes it very difficult to build team chemistry and team cohesion at a competitive level. If an athlete participates in another sport, we expect her to make SSCVB a priority when there is a conflict between the two sports. This means we expect the athlete to attend all SSCVB practices, unless there is a scheduled competition for the other sport at the same time as a club practice. If the player has second thoughts about the level of commitment that she is willing to make, we suggest that she not tryout. All Southern Slammer’s teams require dedication on the part of the athlete for the team to be a success. Volleyball is a team sport and other team members depend on each player on the team to contribute to the effectiveness of the team. Commitment is taken very seriously by the player’s teammates and the coaches. An athletes' best performance will occur when they are on the top of their game physically and mentally. Stresses can be attributed to any one or a combination of the following; poor nutrition, illness, fatigue (i.e. lack of sleep), insufficient rest between workout sessions, emotional stress from school work, friends or family situations, or other extracurricular activities. It is imperative that you take these factors into account when scheduling your time and activities. The body can only handle a certain amount of stress within a given time period before illness and injuries occur. Tournaments Tournament planning and preparation is very tedious and time consuming. Cancellations rarely occur. All regular teams will have a defined tournament schedule including the Regional Championships. In the event that at team wishes to attend a tournament not listed on the club schedule the entire team must agree to attend, and attendance is based on the coach’s availability. The entire cost will be split between the team, and payable to the club prior to tournament registration. In the event of a scheduled tournament being canceled by the host club the club director, working with Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 5 the coaches and families, will do their best to find another tournament for the team to participate in. In addition if weather conditions cause a tournament director to cancel a tournament we will make every attempt to reschedule a tournament for that team. Circumstances as listed above are not in the control of SSCVB Director and/or Staff and refunds will not be issued. Typical Tournament Day Information Tournaments typically start at 8:30 AM and end at 5:00 PM however, depending upon the number of pools and teams and the tournament organization itself, can last several hours longer. Except for starting times, most tournaments do not follow a set time schedule. Matches will begin 10 minutes after the end of the previous match. If the tournament is run well, it should be over around 6:00 p.m. But to be on the safe side, expect to be there all day. Teams will begin pool play, where they will play each team in their pool, with the winning teams advancing to a Gold bracket and other teams advancing to a Silver or Bronze bracket. Most matches are best 2 out of 3 games. Rally scoring is used, which means that a point is scored on every serve. Seating is sparse in most of the gyms so we recommend that you bring your own chairs. Some players bring pillows and sleeping bags so they can rest between rounds. Games, homework, books, Etc. is all recommended for some of the longer tournaments. Arrive early so you can help set up your team area and get ready to warm-up. Typically, your team ( or multiple teams if playing the same schedule in the same venue) will setup a food table that the athletes, coaches and families will eat from. Due to the limited time between matches teams will not have time to leave the facility to get lunch/dinner. Each family is asked to contribute to the team table, and keep in mind that athletes need to eat healthy during the tournament. Please limit sweets and sodas ( and no fried foods). Some tournament don’t allow coolers inside tournament facility. Please leave the site neater than when you arrived – you are representing Southern Slammers, your team and your family. Rules and Regulations SSCVB abides by all of the USA Volleyball and Georgia High School Sports Association rules. Per GHSA rules high school coaches are prohibited from coaching athletes that are currently in grade 8th – 11th, regardless of the school system the athlete attends or the coach is coaching in (this applies to employees of a school system or community volunteers). This rules limits which coaches can be involved with teams during the club season. The rule does not apply to the coaches involvement outside of the school year. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 6 Practice Rules Scheduled practice time is start time and not arrival time. Athletes should plan on arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of each practice. There is a consequence for arriving late to practice and competitions. You should come dressed and ready to practice. The only exception is volleyball shoes and they may be carried into practice and tournaments and only worn for practice and tournaments. This will ensure that the shoes last longer and our facility surfaces remain clean and safe. While we want your involvement with SSCVB to be fun and enjoyable horseplay by athletes or coaches at practice or tournaments is strictly prohibited. We strongly encourage athletes who make a SSVCB team to take this participation seriously. This means we expect SSVCB practices and tournaments are of the highest priority. All athletes are expected to make every effort to attend every practice. Only an illness serious enough to keep the athlete home from school or a genuine family emergency are legitimate excuses for missing practice. Regardless of the reason, if an athlete miss’s practice, her playing time may be affected. If an athlete cannot be at practice, the athlete is expected to call the coach. It is the athlete's responsibility (not the parent's) to reach the coach before the practice starts. Your coach will inform you the preferred contact for any questions or attendance issues. Athletes are encouraged to bring water, in an unbreakable container, to practices and tournaments. Absolutely no glass containers are allowed in the gym. In the case of inclement weather, if the facility that you are scheduled for practice is closed ( due to weather or reason beyond the control of SSCVB ) your practice is cancelled. Always review the website for updated information. Athletes should refrain from using or checking all electronic devices during practices. Uniforms and Equipment Competition apparel consisting of a jersey(s) and practice t-shirt(s) will be given to each player as part of their fees. Players are responsible for providing their own shorts (spandex), shoes, socks, club backpack*, jacket, pants and kneepads. The cost of the uniform is included in the club fee, and the uniform must be worn whenever representing the Southern Slammer at a sanctioned tournament, or club event. *Backpacks and jackets are included in Travel Team fees and are an optional purchase for the Local Division. Only Southern Slammer apparel is to be worn during competition (even when officiating at tournaments). The Director must approve all practice and game uniforms. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 7 The Director must also approve the use of the Southern Slammers Logo or the club name. Parents should not have team T-shirts or other outerwear made for any team without permission from the Director. Southern Slammer supplies facilities, volleyballs, ball bags, net systems, equipment, first aid kits, etc. Care should be taken when using and supervising this equipment. ELIGIBILITY, REGISTRATION, AND INSURANCE All school-age athletes, elementary through high school, are eligible to participate in Southern Slammers Club Volleyball programs. All players must be registered as a member of the USAV and the region that we operate under, SRVA. This registration is necessary for any player to participate in practices and sanctioned tournaments, and for the individual to receive secondary limited insurance coverage. This registration should be completed on the region website at www.srva.org. Medical and liability insurance from USAV covers practices, sanctioned events, and competitions. The coverage is excess (secondary) and provides benefits after full payment on family insurance is used or if there is no other health insurance coverage in force. The benefits are limited to a $5,000.00 maximum. Southern Slammers has an additional liability (tertiary) policy that provides additional $25,000 maximum. The Southern Slammers structures its programs to be in full compliance with State, NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA rules and policies. However we strongly urge all members and parents to educate themselves on all state and institutional rules to avoid infractions (e.g., non-payment of club fees). GRIEVANCES If a player or parent has a grievance with a coach or the club, the following steps shall be followed: 1. The player should immediately discuss the problem or concern with the coach before or after practice and try to arrive at a solution. 2. If the player is not satisfied, the player and their parent should request an appointment for a meeting with the coach. 3. If the player and parent are still not satisfied, they shall request a meeting with the coach and the Club Director to try to resolve the problem. 4. If after steps 1-3 the issue is not resolved, the player and parent shall request a meeting with the Club Director and Parent Council. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 8 Southern Slammers is committed to the concept that “positive communication” is the key to successful relationships. The coach, player, director relationships are the core of Southern Slammers and we encourage positive and open communication in the correct environment. Please Note: During tournament play concerns about playing time or coaching issues will only be addressed using the 24 Hour Rule. Southern Slammers requires that parents/guardians and players address issues after 24 hours has elapsed from the team’s most recent tournament, and should not be discussed or addressed during mutliday tournaments. PAYMENT DEFAULT POLICY Southern Slammers is a parent operated club. Unpaid dues represent funds not available to meet the club expenses. Any player delinquent in club fees will have their parent/guardian notified by the club, and the player may be suspended from participating in any club/team or Southern Slammers activity and any club transfer request will be denied. A $25.00 late fee will be added for any payment over 30 days late, and Southern Slammers reserves the right to inform USAV that a player is not in good financial standing with Southern Slammers. Should a player remain in default, Southern Slammers reserves the right to place the player account in “bad standing” which may also affect their status with other affiliated associations. Club Transfers / Player Release: Accepting a position on a club team obligates each player to agree to pay in full the registration and club fees which are non-refundable, regardless of whether the player decides to leave Southern Slammers prior to the end of the seasonal year. If a player wishes to transfer between USAV affiliated clubs the player must notify the current Club Director in writing. The request must list the club that the player is wishing to transfer to and a reason / explanation for the transfer request. Prior to consideration of transfer the athletes account must be current, and they must be in good standing with the current club. Transferring clubs does not automatically reduce or wave any unpaid amounts. If transferring from the Southern Slammers we will make every effort to reduce amounts due based on the date of the transfer request but won’t consider amounts submitted for tournament registration that have been paid prior to the transfer request. Per SRVA rules and regulations any transfer request later than 15 January of the current season will not be considered unless the Club Directors of both clubs (Southern Slammers and transfer to or transfer from club) are in agreement. Agreements must in writing, and must be submitted to and approved by the SRVA Commissioner Ken Cain. This is in accordance with the SRVA policy. SRVA policy can be found at www.srva.org>>forms>>registration – 2014 SRVA juniors tryouts and transfer policy. POLICIES AND RULES REGARDING PARENTS AND PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT Parent Participation Southern Slammers is a family focused club and encourages the entire family to be part the club and contribute to your athlete’s success and enjoyment. Parents or family members wishing to participate as chaperones (overnight travels), line judges, scorekeepers, libero trackers, “Shag Daddies”, etc are required to join the USAV association and submit to and pass a background screening. Membership in USAV is 30.00 (non-coaching). This cost includes background check. Parents are not allowed on the bench at tournaments at any time. You must register via the Southern Region Volleyball Association website, www.srva.org. BASIC RESPONSIBILITY Parent participation and support is essential for the success of our teams and our players. Active and responsible parents also contribute to the positive image the Club enjoys within the community, within USAV and SRVA, and with our sponsors. The areas of direct responsibility for parents are: Meeting the financial obligations to the Club Providing players with transportation to and from practices and tournaments Knowing and adhering to tournament etiquette rules. TOURNAMENT ETIQUETTE The Club hopes that each parent will attend as many tournaments over the course of the season and that they will be active cheerleaders for the team and the Club. There are a few rules of proper etiquette and behavior that parents need to follow Supportive Parents make a Stronger Team! The Club Director, the Parent Council, and all the Coaches want parents, Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 10 friends, relatives and fans to enjoy tournaments and to be a cheerleader for the team and the club. Code of Conduct for Parents Provide your daughter with the support she needs to uphold her contract with SOUTHERN SLAMMERS Volleyball Club Ensure the financial obligations to Southern Slammers Volleyball are fully met in a prompt manner. Understand that all communications to the coach concerning their daughter’s practices, playing time, playing position, relationship with the coach and players, and overall performance is to be done by the daughter first and not by parents, or guardians. Refer to the Parent Code of Conduct for further details PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES Because of the long tournament day, it is recommended that each player/team bring food and drink. Parents and team chaperones should provide nutritious energy efficient food and water for players before and after matches during a tournament day. Often there is neither time nor transportation to run out to eat between matches. At our of town tournaments each team ( or when possible multiple teams) will setup a team table that will provide food, snacks and drinks for the players, coaches and families. We will ask a parent from each team to be the assigned coordinator for team tables. The use of team food tables helps reduce the cost of tournaments and provides for a quick and nutritious meal for the athletes. Help Reinforce Team Commitment Make Southern Slammers Volleyball a priority. Try to avoid scheduling conflicts during club activities and stress the importance of following through on the commitment each player has made to their team. Try to bring your daughter to all tournaments and practices on time. Be supportive of the coaches. If your daughter is unhappy with their coach, encourage them to speak with the coach directly. Be supportive of the team and all of its players. Especially on Southern Slammers Volleyball teams, all players are expected to contribute so the strength of any given team is only as strong as all of its parts. Never speak negatively about any Southern Slammers player with your daughter or other parents; this ultimately only hurts the whole team. Guidelines for Parents Be supportive. Let your children know that win or lose, you love them unconditionally and that you are proud of their efforts. Always give positive reinforcement. Show them you are pleased that they chose to play sports and accept all the challenges that come with trying to better themselves in practices and games. Let them know that you understand how hard it is to constantly put themselves on the line in front of peers and spectators. Be completely honest about your child’s athletic ability, attitude, and sportsmanship. Remember that you don’t always know what happens in practice; you can’t second guess the coach’s decisions, because you probably don’t have all of the information. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 11 Let your children live their own lives. Try not to relive your athletic life through your children. Don’t pressure them to shine for your own ego. It’s okay if they make mistakes. Coach attitude, but don’t coach skill. Leave that to the coaches. Refrain from the inclination to try to make your child just a little better by giving them tips on the way home from matches, or at dinner, or when they are just trying to go to sleep. Don’t compete with the coach. You each have different roles to fill; leave them theirs and work on your own. You are a role model for your child athlete. As such, you should model composure and poise on the sidelines. Stay calm, composed, and in control during games so your child can mimic those positive behaviors. Refrain from game time coaching and just give positive encouragement. Never compare the skill, athletic ability, or attitudes of your child with other members of the team. Even if they are not a starter, celebrate their skills and the contributions they make to the team. A team’s success is a reflection of every player on that team. Ask your child athlete the right questions. Asking the right questions after competition and games will tell your child what you think is important in sports. If you ask, “Did you win?” your child will think winning is important. If you ask, “Did you have fun?” she will assume having fun is important. Always remember that children tend to exaggerate both when praised and when criticized. Allow them time to cool off. Chances are, tomorrow they will have more appropriately evaluated a situation. If you feel the situation warrants your attention, investigate quietly before overreacting. Remember that young athletes decide to compete in sports for many reasons. They enjoy the competition, like the social aspect, like being part of a team, and enjoy the challenge that comes with sports. Always be supportive and encouraging whatever their reasons. Parents who follow the above guidelines will consider it high praise when, later in life, their children say, “My parents were always there for me, and were my best support. I couldn’t have done it without them!” Sports should be fun! The primary goal should be to have fun and enjoy healthy competition. (The above information was taken from the book “Coaching Volleyball: Building a Winning Team” by Carl McGown, Hilde Franske, and Launa Moser and an article, “Sports Psychology Guidelines for Sports Parents” by Dr. Patrick J. Cohn) SPECTATOR/PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT (pulled from the FIVB / USAV rules for 2013-2015) I WILL: 1. I WILL abide by the official rules of USA Volleyball. 2. I WILL immediately notify the Event Director and/or Program Administrator in the event that I witness any illegal activity. 6. I WILL acknowledge that the spectator seating around the courts is for the primary use of those watching the match in progress. 7. I WILL acknowledge that spectators may rightfully choose to remain in a seat for an entire match without switching sides of the court when the teams switch. I WILL NOT Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 12 1. I WILL NOT harass or intimidate the officials, including line judges and scorers. 2. I WILL NOT participate in any game or game-like activities unless I have a current membership with USA Volleyball. 5. I WILL NOT bring and/or carry any firearms at any USA Volleyball event. 6. I WILL NOT bring, purchase, or consume alcohol at any Youth/Junior volleyball event. POLICIES AND RULES REGARDING ATHLETES AND ATHLETES CODE OF CONDUCT FOR TOURNAMENTS AND PRACTICES Participation Participation is open to all without regard to race, creed, orientation, or national origin. Registration Athletes are required to register with USAV prior to participation in any tryouts, club sanctioned practices or tournaments. It is the athlete’s responsibility to complete the registration process, print out, sign (athletes and parents / guardian) and bring to tryouts: 1. USA Volleyball / SRVA Individual Memberships Form (from www.srva.org) 2. Individual Medical Release (from www.srva.org) 3. SSCVB Indoor Tryout Registration Form (www.southernslammersvb.com) Instructions on the process for accessing and completing the USA Volleyball registration process are included in appendix A. Officiating Training To help reduce and control expenses related to tournaments the majority of clubs that host tournaments required each participating club to provided trained / approved officials (line judges, scorekeepers, libero tracking, R2/Down ref and R1/Up Ref). In an effort to familiarize our athletes with the rules, and to meet our obligations all Southern Slammers athletes must complete on-line training for line judges, scorekeepers and libero trackers. Further your coach will designate some athletes to complete the R1 and R2 online training. All athletes are encouraged to become trained in all officiating roles. Players are required to complete the training session, print out and submit to their coach the results of the training they complete. Training must be completed prior to the first tournament. Failure to complete the training may result in sanctions or disqualification of their teams from tournaments. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 13 Player Conduct Athletes are expected to act in a sportsman like manner and set a proper example during all Club activities, including practices, travel, tournaments, and any activity on or off the court in which the Club chooses to participate. An athlete NEVER talks negatively and displays disrespect to herself, her teammates, coaches, opponents, referees or tournament officials. A team’s success depends upon each athlete’s attitude as well as her skills. Team unity should take precedence over individual needs and can only be created with commitment by each athlete. An attitude that is not conducive to team unity will not be tolerated. Continuous insubordination on the part of an athlete can lead to discipline, suspension or ultimately, expulsion from the Club. Refer to the Player Code of Conduct for additional details Practice Athletes are expected to attend all practices. Athletes must arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the posted start time for every practice. Tardiness shows disrespect to your coach and team. Tardiness will result in disciplinary action. In the event a athlete cannot attend practice, courtesy and Club policy require the athlete to notify their coach directly. Do not have a teammate notify the coach, it is not her responsibility. Excess absences may result in discipline, suspension, or expulsion from the Club upon approval by the Club Director and Parent Council. Due to insurance and SRVA rules only Club members may participate in practice sessions unless approved by the Coach or Club Director. While at practice a athlete will * Show their coaches and teammates respect. * Give 100% of her attention and effort to all drills and scrimmages. * Accept responsibility for her actions. * Notify coaches immediately of any injuries or illnesses. * Be encouraging and not distract others from their focus. * Not wear jewelry, leave jewelry at home. * Refrain from using any electronic devices (this includes texting, emails, etc) * Wear Southern Slammers Volleyball Club attire. Bullying / Harassment Southern Slammers has a strict policy that prohibits any participant (coach, athlete, parents, etc) from initiating, participating in or encouraging bullying or harassment in any form. Athletes that violate this policy are subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension, or expulsion. If an athlete feels that they have been subjected to bullying or harassment of any type they are required to notify their coach immediately. If the incident involves the coach they are to notify the Club Director or Parent Council representative assign to investigate bullying or harassment incidents. Southern Slammers Club Volleyball, LLC P.O. Box 272 Rincon, GA 31326 www.southernslammesvb.com 14 School Southern Slammers Volleyball Club understands the importance of school and supports the pass to play policy. It’s the parent’s responsibility to manage their athlete’s education. If an athlete is in danger of failing a class, the parents may contact the Coach & Club Director to discuss options. Class tests are very important. The Club understands the need for additional study and will try to accommodate the athlete’s schedule. They are students before they are athletes. Practice and tournament schedules are published at the beginning of the season. Athletes must learn to manage their time responsibly. Waiting until the night before or day of a practice or tournament to notify the coach of required homework or school is not acceptable. Homework is not an excuse for missing practice. It is the athlete’s responsibility to communicate with their coach. Playing Time We do not guarantee equal playing time on any team or at any event Club Fees Cover Instruction, Not Play Time. Playing time is a concern that arises nearly every season. It is important that an athlete trust her coach. Coaches are very cognizant of playing time and want each athlete to have the opportunity to play successfully. If an athlete works hard and demonstrates in practice the ability to perform the skills necessary to play the game, she will be given the opportunity to play. When given the opportunity to play, each athlete must bring to the court the skills that she demonstrated in practice that earned the playing time. If play in the game does not match her success during practice, then she must rededicate herself on the practice court. The cycle can only lead to success for the team as well as the athlete. In club volleyball, there is no guaranteed court time for any athlete during a tournament, though it is hoped that there will be an opportunity for all athletes to gain some “on court” experience during the course of the season. Playing time for athletes is determined by attendance, attitude, effort, performance, position, the athlete's potential, the team's needs at the moment, and the team’s needs in the future, and is left solely to the discretion of the their coach. The "coaching decision" is not up for debate or question. Athletes are encouraged to talk with their coach before or after practice if there are questions. The conversation should not ( and will not) be about playing play, but should address questions concerning what that athlete can do to improve their skills, and what change they can make to become a more valuable team member. Tournaments Athletes are required to arrive at the tournament facility 60 minutes prior to their first assign match.
